I've had great times here -- and until recently -- really didn't know of a better place to get wings. Well, went in for wings last night (Monday), and have to say -- I'm never going back. The reasons are: 1) Service was shit - wings were cold, drinks never came to our table, and the server was very incapable. 2) This place smells very disgusting, and the smell alone will keep me from setting foot in that place. 3) The owners are incredibly rude and don't know how to run their business. I came here the other day to pick up a quick lunch. I called my order ahead and was there in time to pick it up - only to have to wait another 30 minutes. The restaurant was super packed and crowded, and waiting wasn't very pleasant - no one offered me water, the stools were uncomfortable, and I didn't get updates about my order. 10 wings and some fries should not take 45 minutes, people! Especially when you tell me 10-15 on the phone. Once I got my food, it was ok - generally oversalted, greasy, and bland. And their happy hour seemed good. The seating is a little cramped. Our server was a little out of it. He was nice when he came to our table but didn't pay attention. We had to ask another server for water because ours was behind the bar talking to someone. Food is good. I loved the southern breading on my chicken. It was light and crispy and not greasy at all. Pretty darn good wings. I have only ordered take-out, but unlike other reviewers have never had a problem with my carry out. The wings themselves are meaty and juicy, not at all fatty or gristly. I've had the original wings, smoked wings, and golden wings. Flavors: buffalo ranch, spicy garlic, and raspberry chipotle BBQ. The buffalo ranch is by far my favorite and while my boyfriend prefers the smoked wings (which do have a unique quality) I tend to lean towards the original. Just so perfectly done. I haven't dined-in yet... As I like to eat wings in the privacy of my own home... But the space is on the smaller side with booths and tables and a bar. This is the place to go for sporting events, I'm sure. Great food - service was great, my only issue was that my food took a little while to come out (this was during lunch and it wasn't too crowded). But I will definitely be back! I was torn between getting chicken tenders or boneless wings (yes, I'm weird), and I actually ended up going with one of their lunch combos; 5 wings and a mini-burger (!), with 1 side. Pretty great deal and it was just the right amount of food. I opted with spicy garlic for the sauce, it was more garlicky than spicy, which was fine, but I do like spicy wings...so I might just go with an even hotter flavor next time. The mini burger was actually pretty fantastic! It had a really soft bun, butter toasted (!) and the mini patty was super juicy. I would definitely get it again, and now I want to try a full-fledged burger to see if it's just as amazing. I bet it is. I, of course, had to try the fried pickles too - they have both spears and slices available, so I went with slices. Very crispy, very good, and not overly expensive like some other places can be. The service was great, I can't recall the name of the gentleman that helped me and my friend, but he was spot on. Immediately greeted us, made us feel welcome, and gladly took time to explain the menu/options and suggestions as it was our first time visiting. Like I mentioned, my only qualm was that the food did take a while to come out, so if you need a speedy in and out visit, you may not get it. But I'd like to think that means they're cooking everything fresh to order. And the aftermath/recovery period was good too, as I didn't feel sluggish or groggy or full of grease like I have from other places. Come here for the food and friendly service! I came here for wings and beer. They have live oak on tap~ an awesome heffeweizen made locally. I asked our server what the last thing he ate was (my favorite question to ask when seeking foodvice) He recommended the lemon pepper flavor, and fried mac and cheese. My friend ordered mozzarella sticks and got jamaican jerk ... which had a little fire to it! I was surprised, I like spicy I just have not found that flavor to be particularly spicy when comparing it at other restaurants. My only complaint is that it was a little dirty inside, the floor, the tables. Overdue Re-review: Because of my stupid brother, and his oak-like qualities, I eventually came back to Wingzup after about a year, and have sort of become a regular. On top of having tasty food, the Zup gang has since become like family, I must admit. I hesitate to misspell his name, because I hear he'll call me out on it (tssk, tssk). But Merril, the manager, is AWESOME. He's the one who immediately tried to correct the wrong that was done so many years ago. I also acknowledge his friendly greeting of me when I happened back in eventually. He's always professional, and will take the time to come say hi to his patrons. On what I said about being extremely understaffed during crucial business hours, that is no longer an issue, and has NOT been an issue for some time now. Horrible experience. Came in at 3pm and ordered wings to go, but changed my mind and decided to open my package and eat there at the bar. I was in between two other gentlemen who seemed to be friendly regulars. The General Manager Merrill Frank started in and gave me this big drawn out speech about how he doesn't let to go order people eat in the restaurant because they are rude and complain about food being cold when they, the customer, took an hour to get there. And that they sit down and eat their to go, take up a table that he wants to turn, don't tip their wait staff, and are all around terrible to deal with. He lumped me in with all of THEM. I told him sorry, I don't know much about the restaurant business and came here just to eat some wings. He said he just wanted me to understand his rules, but I could eat there this time. There was all of 4 people in the restaurant and no wait staff around. It was totally unbelievable to me to be treated this way for wanting to eat my lunch there in the restaurant. When he stepped away the two nice regulars apologized to me for him, and said he's not usually like this. I doubt that after reading other reviews. I was the only woman in the restaurant and thats how he chose to treat a paying customer who tipoed 18%. Then I asked for me blue cheese and he said he'd have to charge me for it, after HIS nasty speech! The wings are delicious, but he left a bad bad taste in my mouth. This place is horrible. I have given them several tries. They consistently serve cold food. The wings...cold. The sides...cold. You can't even get a hot french fry. I sent back cold stale fries and they brought me a new batch of cold stale fries. Who wants cold frito pie. gross. The wing sauces are not good either... We have tried several. Even the simplest of the sauces, the regular buffalo sauce, just doesn't taste right... off flavor and too much vinegar. Worse of all is the service. The servers are the worse I've ever experienced. They are exceptionally rude, no matter how friendly and forgiving you try to be. Forget trying to get take out too. I gave up on the service and reluctantly tried takeout, thinking I would just reheat my wings and fried mushrooms. They workers ate some of my food before packing it. My fried mushrooms were half gone..half of the portion I received when eating in-house, and you could see where the missing ones sat in the styrofoam container. I give up on this place. Rude servers. Cold food. Bad flavors. The portions are not consistent due to the workers heping themselves to your food before delivering it. Avoid this place. This place is awesome and I'm surprised to see it's average below 4 stars. It's a little hidden gem that just opened close to Hyde Park. Their wings are HUGE! I can eat a lot and I had a hard time finishing 10. They have great specials, solid margaritas, and a good beer selection. TVs everywhere and a non-corporate feel make this place a go to for a low key lunch or dinner. Each time I've gone the waitstaff has been great and I even saw the bartender come out from behind the bar to bus tables and take drink orders. Why don't more people know about this joint? First off, I'm pretty much a wing addict. Wing fest VIP and all. This joint is so much better than the pluckers and Buffalo Wild Wings I've been to. I'll be back to watch some football games. The boneless wings are so much more meaty than other places. Light breading and more meat. Isn't that what you are paying for anyways? The sauces here aren't as spicy, for example, the spicy garlic at Buffalo Wild Wings is much more spicy than here. But that's good news for you folks that like your wings on the lighter spiced side. Our table had the scary, extra hot, spicy garlic, jalapeño honey mustard, garlic ranch, jalapeño ranch. The extra hot is not too bad. I love hot, and really didn't think it was bad. The scary is a good spice for me. Hot, yet enjoyable and not face melting. The garlic Parmesan fries are BOMB. Seriously, really really good. The service wasn't the fastest, they seemed under staffed. But our waiter was attentive and nice. The best thing about here is that you can get the wings cooked multiple ways. So awesome! Austin may be the birthplace of Pluckers but their reign as Austin's top wings has ended with Wingzup superior product and overall consistency. Sure, the service can be admittedly spotty but you're at a wing bar so temper your expectations. The traditional wings with spicy garlic sauce is wing perfection: normal sized (not unnaturally massive due to injections from who knows what like some other wing places) wings generously slathered with the delicious sauce (they come wet, no extra charge) cooked to a crispy perfection. I would also recommend spicy teriyaki, buffalo hot (not for the faint of heart), jalapeño ranch and Cajun. Pair it with some waffles fries and a nice cold mug of your favorite local beer.
