Pulling off I-5 at 8pm into a small town while being super hungry and a vegetarian is rarely a promising reality. The lady at the hotel let me know that nothing but fast food was delivering but the Chinese/Japanese place across the street "is surprisingly good". I gave it a shot and am now happy and full and have left overs- for $8.50. The nice woman who took my order was completely familiar with vegetarian and vegan, got clarity on use of eggs (even in the noodles), and told me which dishes had fish sauce or oyster sauce in them. She also let me know they make everything so can make most things without fish sauce or oyster sauce. I was somewhat cornered to come here on a recent track day trip because everyone else was already here and my pleas for Subway (yes, the next best thing, I swear!) went unheard. I can't imagine ... couldn't imagine, still sort of in disbelief, that there's a Chinese restaurant in this one horse town (almost) and that it would be of any quality to even remotely call decent. On a foodie road trip and using a combination of yelp, triple d, various magazine reviews and personal suggestions to eat our way up to Seattle and then back down through Portland to the Bay Area. Well, vacation is winding down and we're heading home. After having skipped breakfast this morning to get on the road, the hunger pangs started. So we popped off the freeway in search of decent, easy to digest food. We found Wong's next to Motel 6. It didn't look like much and there weren't any cars parked in front but it was only 11:05 a.m. While we were debating, someone rolled in and picked up a to-go order. Why not? We decided to go for it. In our experience, Chinese restaurants located in small towns tend to really "Americanize" their food to suit non-Chinese taste buds. Sauces are thicker and sweeter, more items are battered and deep fried, and meats dominate vegetables. Wong's menu is fairly standard. They have most of the usual dishes that are found throughout the United States. They also have some American dishes such as Fish & Chips and four different Teriyaki dishes (Japanese). We ordered: Pot Stickers - Unlike many restaurants, theirs are house-made and not purchased frozen. The skins were chewy but not too thick and the filling was meaty and flavorful. Mu Shu Shrimp - Some people call these Chinese Burritos. Typically, the dish is lots of shredded veg, egg and whatever protein you asked for,served with thin white wheat wrappers (or thin flour tortillas, ick!) and hoisin sauce. Tomato Beef Chow Mein Hong Kong Style - This was probably the weakest dish that we ordered. I like to use it as a way to measure how adept the kitchen is at making this "kids favorite" dish. (Yes, I'm a big kid!). The server told us when we placed the order that they used a thicker noodle rather than the thinner noodles more frequently found in Hong Kong Style. This difference in thickness can really change the mouth feel of the noodles. Another thing I look for is some slight charring and blistering in the tomatoes, bell peppers and onions. Very few restaurants are able to do this anymore because of the high heat that's required. Nope, not here either. If we're ever in the area again and have a craving for Chinese food, this will be our go-to place. read more

Not Mexican! Woo! Given the other choices in town, I was thrilled to find this place tucked away behind the motel. After a long day at the track, all I wanted was a quiet place to sit down and refuel. This was just what the doctor prescribed. Really decent Americanized Chinese food, particularly for the location. My family and I just got take out from Wongs. We have been there before but this time it was horrible!!! All of the food tasted like rancid rotten old grease. It left a horrible aftertaste in our mouth. My advice dont eat here unless you want to get sick!!! read more

Bleh. Cheaply made, at a high price. All of the chicken was breaded and fried, including in the chicken fried rice(!). Even though we ordered and they "cooked it fresh", it was obvious that they used old cooked rice and old breaded chicken in the preparation, that had been sitting out for who knows how long. We came in about 40 minutes before they closed, but at those prices, no excuse to serve old food. We paid $28 for 2 people (one main dish, chicken fried rice, and an appetizer, to go. You can eat the regular other bullshit, mickey ds, b king, kfc, even round table, but the best shit round here is Wongs. I eat here everytime I get to the telly at willows. I got off the freeway and I missed it at first...it's hidden next door to the Motel 6, just on the east side of I-5 and north at the first light. The decor took me back to my Ohio childhood, a stand-alone restaurant with Chinese photos hanging on the wall. We walked in and there was one other couple finishing their meal. The menu has traditional Chinese food. We ordered standbys chicken with snow peas and beef with peppers with steam rice. Food came out and there were decent portions. Food itself tasted good (considering where we were). Service was good. Seemed that they do a quite of bit of takeout. So....for small town USA Chinese food this isn't bad. For starters they actually speak Chinese. So good. I ordered the Chow mein listed as Hong Kong style in the menu. It came out crispy and fried like I like it. Granted the noodles themselves left much to be desired. But the overall preparation was done well. Half of the table would have rated 2, the other half 4. 2 of our friends had ordered plates that should have had meat and veggies, they ended up with almost all veggies and barely any meat to speak of. The other 2 of us at the table had decent meals with good flavor and a decent amount of meat to veggie ratio. Service was friendly, although not so efficient as there was an empty water glass or two before she came by for a refill. The place was slow so the 'not so prompt' service was inexcusable. Prices were reasonable for Chinese food, they do have some daily specials on a board you have to look at on your way in, the server wasn't familiar with them on our visit, even when ordering one.
