Love this place! Fresh food and great people who run it and cook your food made to order! This place has been in chico for 35 years and I've only been a few times but it is becoming a staple for us. It's hard to pass up a good vibe and fresh food! Love the windows into the kitchen so you get to see them make your food and even wave! They were kind enough to set up a table for 8 ahead of time and were kind when our entire party didn't show. Mu shu is out of this world food and fresh the pancakes are amazing and I want to buy some for home! So fresh and flavorful and she will roll them for you!! The po po platter was perfect gave us a little of everything and is more than enough to share for 3!! Sizzling rice soup - great broth and wonderful vegetables nice and crunchy! Can't remember the name of the chicken dish but wow - it's something you must eat there or get the sauce on the side if you get it to go! It's so crunch and yummy! We dined in, service was amazing. The staff were helpful in answering questions about the new menu. The egg drop soup was vibrant with fresh veggies, which was a very tasteful upgrade to your typical egg drop soup. The egg roll was crispy and flaky with a yummy pepper added to the cabbage mix inside. The sesame chicken was crispy and delicious. If you're expecting the same food you've been enjoying from the previous owners you will be dissatisfied. But if you come in open to experiencing the new recipes I feel you will be pleasantly surprised just as I was. Having been a regular at Chan Pheng's for years we were excited to see how it was with the new ownership. Sadly we were VERY disappointed. We ordered the family dinner for two. The food was flavorless and the meat was very dry and over cooked. The eggroll was ok, but all of the filling pulled out on the first bite and the fried wonton had a weird an unappealing flavor. Perhaps they are still working out kinks, but we are sad not to have our local go to anymore. read more

AMAZING CHINESE FOOD! This Chinese food is delicious--better than the Chinese food we've had in San Francisco's Chinatown. The Sizzling Rice soup is phenomenal. Fresh veggies, delicious broth and fresh shrimp. The braised bean curd with fresh veggies was perfectly cooked, and the chow mien was made with thick tasty noodles, fresh veggies and chicken. I love the food here and there is a young waiter in the evenings who is great, but the older woman on the day shift or early evening is not a good support for the business. She ignores customers (including us) when we come in to get served and stays busy doing her set up work. She sweeps the floor while we were eating, even though they just opened 45 min. earlier. She packs or take home order of egg rolls in salad-type plastic containers instead of the boxes. Her lack of care is turning me off the place, though she's there at a time when it works for my family and I to eat out. Maybe the place just wants to close. The orange carrots pop. Those are FRESH veggies! Watching the staff work the wok and food gave me nostalgia for my time in Guanzhou, watching street vendors expertly cook noodle dishes in front of me. We ordered take out, got some General Tao chicken and steamed rice and I had some leftover mushu chicken so I ordered more pancakes and plum sauce. The staff are all always very nice and friendly. Even when it gets very busy, they try their best to be attentive and cordial. I'm amazed at how calm they can be in the face of rude and demanding customers. Perhaps more importantly, the food is excellent! I have probably eaten at all of the Asian/Chinese restaurants in Chico and Chan Pheng's is the most consistently delicious of all. Another nice feature is the window to the kitchen so you can watch the chef prepare your meal. My wife and I enjoy Chan Pheng's food at least once most weeks! It comel with the chicken separated in small plate and rice in small bowl Pretty good idea, because if you have left over and want take it away the dishes won't messy with rice. Unique soup we got a bit of noodle with chicken. Also the egg rolls come with wonton skin fried. The rest is small but clean. We really satisfied. Sure be back again next time we come to Chico. Traveled over here for my lunch waited for them to open at 12:30, I walked in . The lady came asked what I wanted. I said can I get a lunch special with Mandarin chicken ? she said no . I go I can't ? She said no. I go " can I pay extra " she said no . OK well, I'll have them mandarin chicken à la cart. Can I add on and make it complete she said sure. I think the add-on is an extra four dollars. I said do you guys have brown rice she said no . I go, Am I able to substitute the steamed rice for chow mein? She said no. A welcoming, "Howdy!" was the start of another 5-star Wednesday dining experience. Thank you to Maxine and May for an entertaining evening. We were laughing and smiling from the moment we sat down. And the rest of the regulars who were clearly having a good time. The coming and going of DoorDash and Grubhub pick-ups a clear indication of the popularity of Chan Pheng's. The staff was on a first-name basis with many of the takeaway customers. And as soon as we introduced ourselves, they were talking to us in the same way. We loved the window into the kitchen watching the fast-paced cooking of this two-person team Cindy and Chan. Exhausting!!! Huge menu made the decisions difficult. An order of pan-fried pot stickers were rushed to the kitchen because they take time to prepare. Then an order of Mu Shu Pork and Chicken Chow Mein. We couldn't resist, already knowing it was going to be too much food. Yes, we had plenty for another meal. And then before any of it arrived, Maxine brought us both a complimentary bowl of Egg Flower Soup. It was fantastic! Even on this incredibly hot day we slurped it right down. Everything was so fresh. And thrilled to know they support the Chico Farmers Market. We strongly support all things local and happy to put Chan Pheng's Mandarin on our star-studded list of deliciousness. Went here for a Mothers Day dinner and REALLY wanted to give it a try after hearing on NextDoor how great the food was. We walked in to an empty restaurant except for one large table in the middle which had aprox 10 people wrapping up their meal. While waiting I saw a dirty fish tank at the front next to the register in the dining room (eww) and also noticed that the fish tank stunk like, well, a fish tank. They have a very noticeable odor when they're not clean. I found the idea kinda grody but shrugged it off because we really wanted to give the place a try. We were seated in less than five minutes, my mom sat down and I excused myself to the bathroom to wash my hands. Why am I telling you this? Because I'm a clean person and I like the places I eat to be clean too. More on that in a minute... I made my way down a long hallway where I noticed a cart sitting next to the outside of the bar (but still on the dining floor, in the eyesight of customers) with two bins filled to the brim with yucky, nasty dirty dishes. FILLED. TO. THE. BRIM. I thought, "Ok, that's gross" but continued down the hall to the bathroom. I washed my hands and on the way out I could see the entrance to the kitchen and how dirty the doors, as well as the hallway floors were. Dirty as in having not had a good mop or scrub down in YEARS. (Barf in my mouth a little bit). I didn't want to be a negative Nelly and complain to my mom about what I had seen, I just wanted to try to enjoy the dinner. So! I sat down and looked around and noticed the horrendously filthy floor. My mom caught me looking and she took a look at the floor as well then picked up her fork and made a not-so-happy face. Her fork was dirty. Just as dirty as the floor which looked as if it hadn't been swept or mopped for an eternity. I don't know if it was the golden hour shining in their window exposing all their DIRRRRRRTY, filthy secrets or if this was typical for this restaurant but, at that very moment we knew we had to leave. We gathered our belongings and as the waitress came back asking what we would like to drink, we politely said, "We've decided on something else and won't be staying". She seemed a bit taken back for a second then said. "No problem" and we walked out. Dirtiest restaurant I've EVER witnessed or been in, and I truly wonder what their kitchen looks like. I REALLY tried to give it a chance but my God, CLEAN THE PLACE ONCE IN A WHILE. The dirty, stinky fish tank was the first sign that we should have turned around and walked out. Sorry I'm not sorry but first impressions are EVERYTHING and the first impression I got here was straight-up filth. Advice if you've never been here? Go in the nighttime and wear sunglasses inside. I was informed no longer have the walnut shrimp on the menu, and they also don't have any fish when I tried to replace that with salt and pepper fish. But I did get the Mongolian beef and the house fried rice and orange chicken instead. 2/3. House Fried rice is yummy. The orange chicken taste just right: savory and sweet. Mongolian bbq is bland. It looks spicy, it is not. There's also no green onions or peppers in it which is something I am used to. I wouldn't include it on their greatest hits. Restaurant was clean overall, so we proceeded to get a Family Special for two, to the tune of $17.50 each. Consisted of the following: 2 egg rolls, 2 foil wrapped chicken, and those big fried thin bread? Won ton soup for two, Almond chicken. Mongolian beef, White rice for 2, and apart a Combination Fried Rice. Egg rolls average at best, 3 Stars. Wrapped chicken poorly done, 2.5 Stars. Those fried whatever 1.5 Stars. Won ton soup chicken tasting broth, which sadly was served lukewarm, which is bad practice, since is supposed to be served hot, if the chef doesn't know that, then who does? 3 Stars. Almond chicken easy to enjoy, 3.5 Stars. Mongolian beef, small serving, at best 3.5 Stars. Order of Combination Fried Rice, $13.50, more rice and more beef than the other two, good flavor, but after a minute one realizes that rice superiority is not a bargain, 3 Stars. No tea offered, a fine tradition, that in this place was a no show. Service can't complain, 4 Stars. Water tasted good, 4 Stars. Steamed rice just that. Total $54+ plus gratuity. I have to be honest. The Chinese cook who I spoke with (she may be the owner) was my best part of coming here. I was hoping for an authentic Chinese food experience but didn't find it here. Regarding the food, the handmade pot stickers were passable but I was missing the extra crispies because they didn't add cornstarch to the water. The Kung Pao had so much extra green veggies that didn't belong in there, like lots zucchini, it was probably one of the reasons why the whole dish seemed watery and lacking flavor. In general the food is cheaply priced, you get free egg roll, fried wonton skins, and soup with your order. By the way, the soup was really weird.. seemed like someone tried to make a fusion version of chicken noodle soup. I think this place could do better business with some quick changes. Some things like the Kung Pao shouldn't be changed, most Americans like this dish the authentic Chinese way. Americans also like hot and sour soup, egg drop soup, sizzling rice soup, there's no need to get creative with a "Chinese chicken noodle soup".
