DO NOT EAT HERE! We walked in and it smelled like the sewer had backed up our dinner was a disaster! Stop by this little gem of a place in Chester, California. I travel all throughout Northern California for work and get to stop and eat and cool, unique places. I was pretty stoked and surprised to find a Chinese food place that was open in Chester. The snow was piled very high, probably six or 7 feet, but luckily, the roads were clear. I happen to see this place and pulled in for a quick lunch. I was the only person in the restaurant at the time on TV. They had a Chinese station which was super interesting. I'm glad they didn't change it for me and kept it authentic. I love the look at the restaurant, which had Chinese Decour all over it. The food came out, hot and delicious! Cashew chicken, chow mein noodles, rice and egg roll. This dish, accompanied with hot tea, was perfect as the weather was very cold outside. Stopped here as it might be the last chance for decent Chinese food for the next 10 days The place was busy and it was a 25 minute wait for a table. Staff tried to keep the 5 groups waiting to check in and a few were overlooked. I went back to my car to sit down. The wait staff were pleasant and efficient but some of the customers looked at me oddly as I had a COVID mask on for prevention and I needed my husband's arm to steady my walk. The server was nice and gave us our choice of two tables. The restaurant has a good selection of food, and for me it was lemon chicken, steamed rice and broccoli beef. I was pretty hungry and though it wasn't the best, it was fresh, hot, and plentiful. The flavors? Just so-so The lemon chicken looked good, but the sauce tasted like sweet ramen soup broth. Not terrible but a bit strange. The chicken part was very good. The broccoli beef had a vinegar aftertaste and lots of garlic (too much). I'll order sauce on the side next time. It looked like they took it out of the freezer, nuked it, then sprinkled some sesame seeds on it. I had my doubts about a Chinese restaurant in a small, sleepy mountain town. However, I decided I could rely on my fellow Yelpers who left positive reviews of this cute spot in Chester. To begin with, the staff are patient, friendly and kind. Power was out in most of town, but they had a generator-making it the only place to grab dinner on a Saturday night. They were super crowded-every table was full and take out orders were pouring in. They kept calm and made sure every guest was helped and gave regular updates to their orders. We opted to dine in and were lucky to snag a small table. To start, we got veggie egg rolls (they are not on the menu-menu states pork, but I asked for meat free and they were accommodating.) I had sweet and our tofu and my boyfriend got cashew chicken. Everything was well made-not greasy, and had lots of flavor. We were in Chester in mid-April on a Tuesday and few of the restaurants were open for lunch. Fortunately this place was. Eggplant with spicy garlic sauce: 3/5. Along with the eggplant this included carrots, bamboo shoots, water chestnuts, and onions. Contrary to the name it was not that spicy. Went here again and it was just amazing as when we came here last year. We got the Thai tea and it is absolutely incredible. The service is incredibly fast, I was really surprised at how quickly we got our appetizers almost immediately after ordering them. And everything was hot and fresh when it came out. Let me tell you something I learned about a Chinese menu with egg foo young... it's a sign that the food is fully Americanized. In other words, not authentic. Let's be realistic though - an authentic Chinese restaurant in a small rural vacation town in Northern California probably wouldn't survive. So Americanized Chinese it was! Now the food was mediocre at best. We ordered the three chicken plate, Mongolian beef, and wonton soup. The quality of the proteins was low and the food was so bland that I added an entire cup of the hot sauce to spruce it up a bit. With that said, however, I so appreciate that this place was a) open (because so many places have already closed for the season), b) open past 8pm, and c) prepared the food for us in approximately 10 minutes flat! And in the midst of a pandemic, being open only for take out is a win in my book! So yes I enjoyed my wonton soup and chicken with mixed veggies (including the ever so popular Chinese American baby corns and water chestnuts). And it was great to have a meal at 9pm that I didn't have to cook. In any larger city, I would have given this place 2 stars. But as they say, beggars can't be choosers and in sleepy little lake Almanor, I can see why this is a local hot spot! read more

Very good food and plenty. The lunch combinations require a box because the portions are greater than most dinners. If you are counting carbs, fried rice and chow mein noodles are just what they are. If you are counting spice, Kung Pao Chicken may need to be balanced with other entrees. Service is prompt. The hot and sour soup is packed with ingredients. Great food here! Plenty of flavor and healthy food in each dish, with light and tasty sauces. On a road trip, eating the standard small town American diet of burgers and pizza for the past few days, we decided to try the Chinese place because maybe we could get a fresh vegetable. As big city snobs, who've lived in London, Los Angeles, and San Francisco, we had low expectations of this little place out in the boonhicks. They served us our pretensions on a plate. Eggplant in Garlic Sauce is usually just eggplant in a dark and greasy sauce. Here, it is eggplant and lots of other veggies, and just enough sauce to add flavor but not drown the food. Green Beans with Chicken is usually just that - beans and chicken, with maybe some garlic or a bit of onion. Here again, it's beans, chicken, and a lot of accompanying veggies with a tasty flavor. Excellent value in dinner and lunch specials. Small town vibe with vibrant kids' art all over the walls. They serve a few Vietnamese specialties but they mainly do a brisk takeout business with the locals serving no-frills Chinese American cuisine. The fried shrimp is always a treat, as are the salt and pepper ribs, tomato and beef stir fry. If you are dining in be sure to try the delightful 'po po' appetizer sampler, served with a mini hibachi at the table. Trader Vic would appreciate it. We came here to grab some lunch to go before our fishing trip. We saw that is was Happy Garden and looked similar to the one in Susanville. Even the menu was similar with the special dinner. Sadly it is not. I also asked if it was related, no. I got a shrimp with vegetable lunch special. The soup was a different kind of egg flower with corn and peas and a very vibrant yellow broth color. Flavorless. At least it was hot. The shrimp and vegetables was just ok. The fried rice looked good but was flavorless, even soy sauce couldn't save it. It also came with some tiny fried won tons and a decent sized egg roll which were on the greasy side, again flavorless. Ugh... Well at least the lady that helped me was very nice. Why, oh why, does my new favorite Chinese restaurant have to be a full five hours away from the Bay Area? The family and I dined at Happy Garden after a strenuous hike and we all enjoyed our meals immensely. No, it was not just our hunger talking! It was truly quality food. We ordered: egg rolls, cashew broccoli, salt and pepper shrimp, and (my personal favorite) crispy eggplant. My meal was considered a dinner special so it came with a yummy egg flower soup as well. There were no vegetarian egg rolls on the menu but the server had no problem getting us some; they were delicious. Due to certain food allergies, we asked if they could make the cashew broccoli without soy sauce, which they did, and I was told it was excellent. The shrimp was breaded in some sort of batter and it was beautifully presented with sliced oranges, bell peppers, and toasted peppercorns. The crispy eggplant was to die for and there was tons of it. Yes, I've been told that this dish is not a part of "real" Chinese cuisine, but I simply don't care because I adore it. For those of you unacquainted with it, it consists of cubed eggplant battered and fried into a melt-in-your-mouth consistency, then smothered in a garlicky sweet, sometimes spicy, sauce. It goes perfectly with steamed rice. Damn, now I'm salivating just thinking about it. You know the food is good if you continue to eat beyond the point of comfortable fullness; as I got up to leave the restaurant that night, I feared I might pop! Service was friendly, attentive, and fairly quick. Prices are low for what you get. And they bring you little scoops of free rainbow sherbet when you've finished your meal. Bummer I can't eat dairy, but it's a nice touch. I'll certainly be making a return visit next time I'm in Chester. Bottom line: If you find yourself in the area, try this restaurant!
