Just ate here for the first time and wow, the food is delicious! I started with the samosas and they were amazing. The pastry was light and crispy, the filling was dense and flavorful (I thought I tasted cinnamon, but I could be wrong). My main was the veggie wrap and I was shocked! The woman at the counter told me they take a while to make, which surprised me because I think of a wrap as a simple, fast sandwich alternative. That is not the kind of wrap they make. This wrap is a full meal. It's dense of insanely flavorful. They bake the ingredients with the naan bread wrap. Yes, it took a while to make, but it was totally worth it. And it's a steal at $10.99. My most favorite food spot in all of Chico. Their butter chicken is to die for, and their green chili naan has just the right amount of kick to it. I used to LOVE this restaurant. I've been eating here for the last 4 years. From their last location to the one near campus now. It used to be delicious, fast, and affordable but it has gone completely down hill. I just drove to Chico from Sacramento just for Taj because I have now graduated from Chico State and was so upset to see the new changes. They no longer have the Thali special which is why I came back all of these years. The prices have tripled. I used to get 3x the amount of food and sides for the price they are selling one entree now. They are trying "made to order" but I only purchases samosas this visit due to the unimaginable prices on the food, and the "fresh" samosa, came with a center COLD. Not quite sure what to say about this restaurant. Was it clean? yes! Was the service good? Yes! How was the flavor of the food, well the person at the next table said the butter chicken tasted like spaghetti os to them, and to be honest the we're completely right! The chicken you could tell had been sitting for sometime (extremely tough) and the sauce tasted just like can SpaghettiOs. The garlic naan was fantastic! We also ordered the chicken tikka masala, and that as well had a very different flavor to it? But as to why I'm leaving the review! Left not feeling good, didn't eat much of the food, but had extreme stomach pains shorty after that went on throughout the night. We ordered take out and it was packaged very well for transport the 20 miles I drove to get home. The food was fresh and tasty. I especially love to Palak Saag. The naan was fresh as were the Samosas. All the tikka masala's and butter chicken dishes were excellent. The only caution I might offer is for anyone who does not like spicy, ask for mild. With family in town we decided on Taj, and having visited it makes me regret the past 8 years not knowing this was within a short walk from my home. Incredibly balanced food, helpful staff, and an amazing value. Taj offers ala carte fare, but also a familiar 1 entre + rice, 2 entre + rice, add more option. Making dining with family / friends a predictable cost & easy exploration. Food was rich and flavorful. Generous servings, large pieces of meet & veggies. Meat was tender and easy to cut, an amazing bite. Our group of 5 ordered what we thought we normally would elsewhere , and ended up with tomorrow's lunch and possibly a snack. Final thoughts: I wish I had taken the time to wait for the light to cross the street to visit Taj back in 2018 instead of going somewhere 2 minutes faster. We went there on Friday of Thanksgiving weekend and we're very thankful that we did. The service was friendly and immediate. The food was excellent, spiced wonderfully for flavor, the items we ate were not too hot, they were just right. There were five people in our party and everybody was quite happy with it. The breads were good the entrees were magnificent and there was even rice pudding! Their prices are very, very, good. The food for five people was less than $100.00 before tax and tip. For the quality of food you would expect to pay more. They have their own parking lot so no need to search for or pay for parking. Remember this, fancy food can be served without ambiance, white tablecloths, or music. The restaurant is basic and you order at the counter. This place is obviously authentic, but my issue with this place is not specific to only this restaurant. In places like Japan, affordable restaurants still exist everywhere, even though their cost of living is just as high as California and sometimes even more expensive. Places you can have lunch at for $5 and have dinner for $10, even with today's inflation. Inexpensive restaurants stay afloat because they get lots of customers. There are affordable restaurants all over India too, that average people living out there can afford to eat at frequently. This Indian takeout restaurant is obviously meant to feed lots of people at an affordable price. But you're looking at $17 plus tax and tip for a combo with naan bread. $5 for a mango lassi. If anybody happens to have a copy of their most recent takeout menu, it was only last year that prices were close to half what they are now. The food is authentic, but on a Friday night there's nobody dining in and only one other customer in line for takeout. I don't want to make it sound easy, but if the profit model of your restaurant is built on feeding a lot of people at an affordable price, then raising the prices this high may not be good for business. Something else I thought is interesting, there are plenty of really good authentic Mexican restaurants in Chico that are still very affordable. read more

Please please please try other options besides butter chicken and chicken tikka masala you are seriously missing out if you stick with just those too!!! Chili chicken (spicy) and Shahi Paneer are my favorites right now. If you like butter chicken then the Shahi Paneer is a good entry way into their veggie dishes. Last tip: they have more food options than what's on display. The tv slide "Made to Order" has all of the kitchen dishes and it's typically just an extra dollar or two. Went for an early dinner here with my son and was not disappointed. I've never been to an Indian restaurant where you order up front of the counter and they serve you from a hot table so I was a little skeptical at first. But this food was absolutely delicious everything was hot and fresh and the portions were huge. The best garlic naan I've ever had. We had the chicken tikka masala and the butter chicken with rice and buttered naan and garlic naan. I finally got to try the mango Lassi as the other Indian restaurants that I'm used to don't have it. I will definitely have it every time now.
