This is your typical hole in the wall breakfast place. The food was decent and the price was not bad. The only thing I noticed was the cook did touch the food with his bare hands and there was no washing in between. I got the corn beef hash with sausage and two eggs. The cook was very good at his craft but just needs to wear two gloves. My meal was good nothing fancy just some good old breakfast. My wife got the biscuits and gravy and her biscuit was so hard and tasted old. It's unfortunate that the delicious gravy was on an old biscuit. The service was excellent and the place is very quaint and totally a local vibe. Not sure if this would be my first choice. read more

We ate breakfast at the Wooden Spoon twice. Our first experience was 4 Stars. Quick friendly service, no wait for a table even though they were busy, tasty food. Our second experience brought it down to 3 stars. We had to wait for a bit (which is not a big problem) and were eventually seated at the counter. Even though it was busier, everyone working seemed much more stressed out. We saw a lot of touching of food (toast, bacon) without gloves/washing by the servers. (Perks of sitting at the counter?) About halfway through our meal the owner? manager? started screaming at a table of customers. She said they had been disrespectful to her the day before and again that day, so she demanded they leave and told them their food was on the house. It was Waffle House level of drama, which we didn't expect from sleepy Marathon, FL. The rest of the employees didn't seem phased, so maybe this isn't a rare occurrence? It's worth a try if you want a place that's more locals than tourists, and the food is pretty decent... but be on your best behavior! :) read more

Party of 6 and we all got something a little different from the next person. I personally got the western style omelet. It was very delicious, especially the potatoes! I could eat those every day. This place is right on the main drag. Small, only open for breakfast and lunch. I ordered mushroom Swiss burger and fries. Burger came with Swiss and American cheeses, sautéed mushrooms and onions. Super old school diner with amazing breakfast options! Service isn't the greatest though because there is only one lady who does everything besides the cooking so we had to go find her when it came time to pay our bill. Besides that, I enjoyed the food and restaurant decor. A lot of locals seem to eat here in the morning, and I can see why. We stay in Marathon for a week between Christmas and New Years - so we aren't locals - and we're not regulars at the Wooden Spoon. Over the past 3 or 4 years, however, I've made it a point to patronize the Wooden Spoon at least once for a delicious breakfast. The Wooden Spoon has seating available at the counter or at tables located as soon as you walk through the door. Initially, I felt like the wait staff was annoyed at anyone who wasn't a local or a regular, but over the past few visits that feeling has disappeared. The waitstaff seem pleasant and glad to have the business, even from out-of-towners. As soon as you sit down, someone brings you a coffee and water. Not long after that, the server is over to take your order. The food is cooked to order and usually comes out very quickly. I am a breakfast fanatic, so that's what I order. The Wooden Spoon is one of the few establishments in Marathon that serve scrapple. Yum!!! While this place seemed like a good idea at the outset, on our trip from Key West, North, it disappointed. Food was decent, but service was rushed and I FOUND A STRAY BACON PIECE AND STRAY HAIR IN THE FOOD. My burger omelet had a bacon piece on the center (edge of photo, pushed to side of plate), and the hair was on a piece of cheese. Service was rushed. Near closing, around noon on a Saturday, when the restaurant closes at 1pm, it was very busy, and the restaurant was understaffed. We waited approximately 15 minutes after sitting down before getting a menu. Servers would get our order then leave very quickly, so we had to wait long before finding out where the restroom was (outside around back), getting the water we asked for previously and to get cream for coffee. The clown chowder was hearty and tasty. The bowl size was small, even though it was the larger non cup option. I went to the counter to tell staff that there was bacon on the food which I can't eat it. They didn't offer to remake the food or provide any discount. Later when I saw the hair on the omelette I didn't say anything since staff was so busy and rushing around. I also don't think the complaint would have been well received. If asked how the food was I would have mentioned the hair, but no one came by after we got the cheque or asked about our experience. Overall, decor was quaint and homey, with that 50s diner feel. If not for the kitchen prep errors, and hasty service I would have rated this place higher. read more

Had to ask for spoon to stir the creamer and my husband asked for refill and the waitress did everything but refill his cup. Seems if you are a tourist you get substandard food and service. They had a number of breakfast specials on the board in addition to their regular menu. Unfortunately, the biscuits didn't live up to the hype of the previously read reviews. They were just okay. Perhaps they would be better first thing in the morning? Anyhow, although large they were not very fluffy. The sausage gravy was just okay, also. I placed an order for pick-up for their brown bag lunch which is a sub, chips and a brownie. I was asked what type of cheese and confirmed that lettuce, tomato, onion, and mayo was ok. I picked-up the order to go and found after arriving back to my location, that there was no cheese or onion on the sub. Unfortunately, there was barely any turkey on the sub either. I was expecting a homemade brownie, but received a refrigerated Little Debbie cosmic brownie pack. The individual bag of Lay's chips was as expected. We stopped here for breakfast on our recent trip down the Keys, Sunday, April 6th. They don't have a traditional "wait system". You tell them how many are in your party, then wait outside. You pay attention to who's in front of you, and then the staff takes whoever they can accommodate next. The two of us had been waiting maybe 10 minutes, when an older couple when in. A different staff member seated them right away, unaware that we were waiting. While irritating, we didn't make a fuss about it. We waited outside about 30 minutes. Once seated, we were rushed to order within 10 minutes, and we never realized there was a board with specials. It took about an hour and a half to actually get out food. I was ready to walk out without eating, when our food finally arrived. The food was okay but definitely not worth the over two hour experience. Please be aware...if you're trying to do anything else, like drive to Key West for the day, this will delay you by HOURS! Lastly...their sweet tea, was like syrup!! read more

Been coming here for about 7 years. My family and I love to come for breakfast. The staff is so wonderful. Still all of the same faces are there but unfortunately the food has been pretty inconsistent. There are two chefs. One is a little stronger in skill then the other. DO NOT ask for egg white anything. Both chefs will refuse. The wooden spoon is an early open early close diner, so any later than 11AM there will be a good chance they will be out of some breakfast sides. The famous biscuits have been very heavy on the flour, the starch is a little stronger then the earlier years. I love the place for nostalgia purposes, but I hate to say, this isn't the best place for late breakfast or if you are on a tight time frame.
