You know a place is really good when you're really sad to find out that they're already closed. There are other brick & mortar pizza places just blocks away with better hours but with lesser pizzas (or they're super crowded) so the Woodfire Pies truck is a welcome addition to the area. Pros: I like the unique flavors - I had Al Pastor. Meat is good, has a decent amount of pineapple. Glad I got the green salsa on the side cuz it was hot! Also since I love hot honey, we got the Mikes Hot honey pepperoni pizza. It was absolutely delicious. I decided to take the family to Spring Fest in Redondo to check it out, but unfortunately, I was disappointed. And one of the indicators of whether I think it's a good pizza is if I want to eat the crust; unfortunately for here, I was a bit torn about it. The texture of the crust was soft and chewy in the way that I expect a good pizza to be, but I was missing the crunch factor and most of all: flavor. The dough honestly just felt like bread that was unseasoned and didn't hold any of the wooden notes that I expect from a good pizza. The ratios of sauce and cheese were also okay, and I felt that It needed a touch more sauce to give it a more boost. I saw a post on Instagram and then bookmarked it on Yelp. We saw it a number of times driving by and finally decided to try it out. Order online and pick it up in 20 minutes. We ordered the Prosciutto di Parm and the Pepperoni & Mushrooms. We got it home and dug in. Nice thin crust and both were tasty! Today and this weekend, they have a spot at Play Days in Monterey Park. We had the Pepperoni & Mushroom pizza while listening to Mariachi music and drinking a nice cold beer! Yum! read more

We got the pepperoni and mushrooms, veggie lovers, and Hawaiian. Some of my family thought the pepperoni was very salty and spicy. And one loved it. For me, I liked the veggie and Hawaiian ones. Overall, the pizzas are good but I'm not a fan of the dough. It's a thin pizza, which is fine for me. But I didn't like how chewy the crust and sometimes bites of the pizza can be. Like very chewy. As expected, my iPhone is spying on me when I talk and knew I was looking for a good woodfired or coal brick oven pizza place. So, Instagram showed me a post from this place announcing they were opening a food truck in Monterey Park the next day. Me and my kiddo went their very first day at opening and were literally the first customers. They are right off the 60 freeway just west of Garfield Avenue. I must say, I think they can find better real estate than this for their truck. I parked, and a person they had waiting there for them failed to tell me that they needed the space I was in. They hadn't put anything up like a traffic cone to reserve the space, and their cash register gal who was standing there didn't bother to tell me. If I was going to the veterinarian's, they would've been screwed, because they would've had nowhere to park. Luckily, I saw their problem and moved up to the one other space available anywhere on the block so they could park their pick up truck and camper. I don't know where guests will park, as there was literally no open parking spot anywhere on the block. I would recommend they see if they can move to a spot around the park near the Sheriff's station. They'd probably get more business, too from people at the park. So, once the wood was thrown in and the oven was ready and hot, we put in our order. Sadly, they did not have sausage that first day, or I would've gotten one of those pies. We did get a margherita pie, a pepperoni pie, and a cheese pie with black olives added. All the pies are one size and that is essentially personal pizza pie size. You could eat a whole one in one shot, which makes this kind of pizza more pricey than regular pizza pies. The pizza was actually very good. The ingredients are good. They accidentally burned the first margherita pie. I was a little surprised they still packaged it and gave it to me. Luckily, I checked, as I wanted to take some pics before driving home. When I went back and showed it to them, they let me keep the half ruined pizza and made me a new one, which honestly they could've and should've done without me having to say anything. Still, the pizzas held up on the drive home, still tasted delicious, and the leftovers even heated up pretty solidly, which is nice since most time Neapolitan pizza doesn't heat up well at all. It wasn't overly chewy or soggy like some places. If you are looking for brick oven pizza, definitely swing by and give them a try. Make sure you bring someone with you, though, in case you need to double park or stop in a parking lot entrance while you get your order made. Give it a go! read more

Maybe because I got the pizza to-go, but it tasted undercooked? I got the margherita pizza. Comparing this with other pizzas, I think it's below mediocre because the crust did hold up, but there was no difference in texture between the outside crust where it's supposed to be crispy and the inside thickness and density of the crust. I think the pizza looks pretty good though! The taste of it just was more akin to a sandwich than a pizza. read more

I wanted so much to give these guys five stars. I love supporting local small businesses, especially those here in Montebello. The ordering process was simple enough, no cash, which makes sense. 20-minute wait I have no issue with, especially for fresh food. They were clean, not so friendly, but I wasn't there to make friends, I was there for a good pie and that's where they failed. I really hope I don't hurt feelings, but I am just being honest (in my opinion). The pie was dry, probably one of the driest I've had. Need water to swallow. Very little sauce. In fact, it was more like a quesadilla. No flavor. It wasn't bad, but it wasn't good. I thought maybe it was just mine, so I tried my wife's and asked her opinion. She felt the same. Outside of Settebello (Pasadena), which has some quality control issues on busy nights, good Neapolitan pizza is hard to find in the SGV. Woodfire Pies fills the void to the south. The margherita has fresh mozzarella with a sauce that isn't sharply acidic. The crust on ~90% of the pie has an acceptable crispy-but-lightly-floppy texture. The only downside is the outermost 10-20% of the pie, which was burned far beyond the usual Neapolitan char-levels, which also resulted in a marinara-like thick sauce on that same outer section of the pie. Judging from pictures, it was probably accidental and the next pie I order won't have that issue. I'll definitely go back. read more
