Great office from receptionist to dentist. Will always fit me in for an emergency and very caring.

UPDATE (7/22/2022): I made an appointment with another dentist for July 19th. Before I went there, he told me that this dentist's X-rays are blurry and that he has to do another round of X-rays to see how many cavities I have. After doing thorough X-rays, he only found ONE cavity. Since Dr. Mahmoodian had told me that I have several cavities, I asked the other dentist to let me know by today if he found any other cavities. I did not get a single notification from him since my appointment on July 19th. read more

Like most other reviews here I will point out that the staff at Woodside dental are very friendly and if that is all you want in a dentist then this place will work for you. However, if you need to get any actual work done I don't recommend this dentist. I will briefly describe my experience. I went in with some tooth sensitivity and after x-rays and a consultation I was told I needed two crowns. During the cleaning same day they came in and explained to me what was covered by my insurance (cleaning, fluoride treatment) and what wasn't (gum irrigation, and a fancy fluoride toothpaste). I understood, signed off and paid same day for the things that were not covered by my insurance. Then the receptionist broke down for me what the insurance would pay for for the crowns and what I owed. Again I signed off and made the appointments. It was suppose to just be 2 weeks between prepping for the crowns and then delivering the crowns. For me it was 6 weeks for the following reasons. 1- I started having some pain after prepping the teeth for crowns and they said it was just from my chewing my gum when I was numb. In actuality, I needed a root canal on one of the teeth. 2- Then more pain and the dentist said the tooth that got the root canal was still healing. Nope, wrong again! I ended up needing another root canal. 3- Once all the pain went away we were at 4 weeks and i go in to get the crowns and THEY DON'T FIT! Even after taking impressions! And that is how I ended up waiting another 2 weeks for the next set of crowns to come in. Then finally 6 weeks later when I get the crowns delivered they tried to charge me an additional $650 dollars that was never mentioned to me! The receptionist claiming that the insurance ended up not covering the initial cleaning, which is bullshit because I got in touch with the insurance company and they said that is not true. I believe the dentist was trying to get more money out of me for THEIR SCREW-UP of needing to order 2 sets of crowns! I am not paying for their mistakes and I just want others to be aware that they might scam you for this! When I first choose to go here I was impressed reading the reviews that they were upfront with how much things cost and how much your insurance covers and how much you owe in the end. Even throughout the process I thought that was impressive, but to then throw a big charge at me after they screwed up my crowns was shocking! I should have seen it coming that last visit all of a sudden all the staff and dentist seemed really cold to me. In general, I do not recommend this place. You can't screw up common procedures (crowns that don't fit even after impressions!) and then charge a patient way more than originally talked about! Disgrace. read more

I want to post this because I would like the next patient or human being that deserves to be treated with respect, think twice before making an appointment here. The hygienist has an excellent bedside manner, informative and a pleasure to have known. The physician, is very aloof, short with you, and you are not 100% sure what she wants the dental plan to be. I truly am and was in need of more than a cleaning/ whitening, but that money was taken, I was referred and the office avoided me after the fact. They do not return calls or emails. By law you have the right to your medical records, so I hopeful to recieve a release of records to sign soon . I have yet to get a return phone call or email regarding my request. However, it's August 5, 2020 and I recieved a letter stating that there was a, "breakdown in our doctor-patient relationship"... She goes on to state that, "your dental needs would be best met by a dental specialist." I have only been calling and emailing constantly to get assistance with documentation for the CT Scan suggested by the referral they provided. The referral stated that they do not assist with helping patients obtain this through their insurance. I was willing and already doing the footwork, but couldn't get a few CPT codes from them or a response. How bad is my situation, I will have another dentist assess and follow the necessary course of action I should take with this provider as well as the other for their lack of care. Please do research for yourselves and you do not have to take my post as what it always is there, but abandoning a patient is pretty serious, especially when the condition isn't simple. Thank you Woodside for the letter in the mail. If you can please send me my release of medical records , I appreciate it sincerely. The receptionists and staff were incredibly friendly. That being said, this was more of a high pressure sales environment than it was a dentist's office. Having never had a cavity and nothing but routine cleanings my entire life, I was expecting more of the same. They convinced me to some sort of gum laser treatment, and were only able to do half of my mouth for over $150. I was there for over two hours and had to refIll my meter, and did not even get the second half of my mouth cleaned. I was advised to get sealants???? And told that I could potentially get a skin graft to my gums from the roof of my mouth? I left and never scheduled the other half of my mouth. This place is a hoax. Though I look at Yelp reviews, I'm never strongly compelled to write them for any establishments. However, having been to/knowing what a great dentist/dental office can be like, I have to rate Woodside Dental very low. I had an open mind seeing some of the reviews on here. It was definitely also a plus since I work in the Westwood area. The reception/staff are nice, which is absolutely a great thing. But the actual dental work, the procedures, and quality of work is extremely subpar. I went in for a general 6 month checkup/cleaning and never have I left the dentist feeling like my teeth actually were not clean. The routine cleaning felt so cheap and my teeth didn't feel/look any cleaner. -and I understand that you wont have dazzling bleached white teeth after a regular cleaning, but usually you can see and feel a difference and positive improvement. I also had some teeth that had been under watch for several years and we spoke about having them filled. I did not schedule a follow up appointment because I had very little confidence in having anyone there drill into my teeth/do proper fillings that would hold up in the long run, given how poorly my routine cleaning went. There were also some small sealants I had on some teeth and it was suggested that I have them re-done and both of the following options were recommended: 1. the standard tooth filling that is white, or 2. the filling that is silver and contains MERCURY. What reputable dental office recommends a sealant that includes mercury in 2018? That's medieval in this day and age. The fact it was even brought up as an option was embarrassing to me. Having just gone to a different dentist office in the area as well - I can tell you that 1. The cleaning/check-up at Woodside Dental was indeed so poor and not worth the money/my health insurance, and 2. There are much better places in the area right down the street that provide a truly professional experience that will really benefit your dental health. 2/17/18 Update: The response from Woodside Dental to my review is absolutely hysterical. 1. If I'm not a patient of record, then how come I received an e-mail yesterday reminding me to schedule my appointment? 2. I Did NOT state that I had the silver sealants that contain mercury placed in. I simply said it was one of two options recommended to me. -and I certainly hope that no one ever has had silver sealants that contain mercury placed in at this "dentist office" because if that were the case it would represent a major and serious health issue for that patient(s). read more

I went to Woodside Dental after a coworker suggested them to me. I should have done my research before going. The place seemed amazing when I first got there. The dental assistants were very nice to me, the location is very nice with amazing equipment, and it had a fairly good feel to it. My perspective changed though as soon as I met the dentist. She was pleasant at best and has this air about her that she's better than the rest of the people in there. She even started yelling at some of the dental assistants while she was working on me. It wasn't very welcoming. Then she starts suggesting all of these extra procedures that I need to have! I'm in my mid 20s, and while I've had some slight cavity problems in the past I have never had anyone suggest all of these different things for me to do. She even tried to get me to buy a toothpaste for about $20 claiming that if I used it twice a day that all my cavity problems would go away. After I went home, I did my research on the toothpaste and found out that it should only be about $10 at most and you're only supposed to use it a couple of times a week because it has so much fluoride in it!!!! They also tried to get me to sign up for invisalign, ummmm I've had braces so my teeth aren't that messed up! The place is nothing but a rip off. All they care about here is getting as much money out of you while they can. They're even trying to get me to come back in for ANOTHER check up appointment only 4 months after my first one. I know my insurance and I know that they only cover appointments every 6 months. When I asked them if my insurance would cover an appointment only 4 months after the first, they straight up lied to me and said they would. I will not be going back there and unless you like to be sold stuff that you really don't need, then I don't suggest going there either. read more

I visited Woodside Dental for the first time today. I would NEVER recommend this dentist to anyone. Why not? Because the dentist didn't even SEE ME!!! Consistent with what I've experienced with dentists in Los Angeles, the hygienist first tried to upsell me on services that I didn't need. When I asked how much these services would cost and whether they were covered on my insurance, the bill came out to almost $200. I declined the extras except for a treatment I knew I actually needed and the hygienist proceeded with my cleaning. After the cleaning was done, the hygienist went to go get the dentist to do the final exam. She returned to say that I would need to make a separate appointment to actually see the dentist, because she was too busy with the other patients in the office. I know for a fact that I was the first appointment of the day, and the only other patient there was 30 minutes late (this was who the dentist was seeing). Because I didn't have time to wait, and after the receptionist and hygienist insisted I come back another time, I ended up reluctantly making a follow-up appointment for two weeks later so the dentist could do the exam. Is it just me, or does one expect to actually SEE THE DENTIST when going TO THE DENTIST??? Absurd. read more

Most of the time I will only leave a review if I have something positive to say, but I'm going to make an exception here. I made an appointment to get a second opinion on the cost of an implant crown and a root canal crown. I spoke for 15-20 minutes with the person who scheduled my appointment about implant crowns, including costs of the different pieces (abutment and crown). I wait for a month for an appointment, come fill out the paperwork, get x-rays for the 2 teeth, and get examined only to be told an hour later that they don't even do implant crowns!!! WTF? I went to Woodside Dental for the first time back in 2008. I had a very traumatic experience as a child (My dentist hit me, and suffocated me multiple times). I refused to go to the dentist after that, and stuck to my guns for 14 years. Then tragedy struck, my wisdom teeth cracked my back molars, and I was in a lot of pain. I looked up a dentist that was close to my work, so I could walk during my lunch break and get work done. I was more than fortunate to have Woodside Dental that close! On my first visit with Dr. Mahmoodian, I explained to her my situation with my previous dentist abusing me. I expected her to throw me out of the office, because let's face it, who wants a problem patient? Instead, she has done everything in her power to make sure that I am comfortable, safe, and relaxed during my visits. She's beyond patient with me, and very understanding to my needs. Today I had an amazing visit with Dr. Mahmoodian. I went in for another cracked tooth (Don't judge me! I brush, I'm just vitamin D deficient!) and was initially told I would have to spend up to $915 for the crown and repair. This shocked me, who wouldn't be astounded by such a high price. But I asked Pam for further explanation, and she told me they always quote the worst case scenario, that way you NEVER have to pay more than expected. Case in point, I was able to fix my tooth with just a filling, costing me a measly $85. So yes, the initial quote for treatment scared my poor checking account, but I walked out of there smiling half a smile (only half because the other side was paralyzed numb) at the economically friendly service provided. The new office is trendy, bright, comfortable, and the staff provide a safe and nurturing environment. You will not catch any other dentist sticking their fingers in my mouth! read more

I can't say enough good things about the staff at Woodside Dental. They are always so nice and I look forward to seeing them. They know I am on a tight budget so they always rank the things I need in order of what I must have done to preventive stuff. Then Pam at the front desk will go through my insurance right there and tell me what is covered and what is not so there are absolutely no surprises when I get my bill. Bonus- they have a few parking spaces at the new office, which they didn't at the old office. Dr. Mahmoodian and her hygienists are always nice, personable, and professional. It's a relief to go somewhere, where I am not being badgered to buy unnecessary stuff and being charged outrageous, surprising fees. They will ask if you would like an extra preventive procedure such as Fluoride if needed, I politely decline and they move on to the next subject. Woodside Dental gets it! read more

I agree wholeheartedly with those saying Woodside Dental is a racket. The hygenists, the front desk staff and the dentist are very friendly - that is true. But as someone in their late 20s with a good diet, no dental problems ever and my last visit to a (different) dentist having been the prior year, having a dentist suddenly tell me I had to get 6 cavities filled seemed a bit off. I went ahead with it, being charged nearly $1,000, until my insurance explained to me that I shouldn't have been charged a penny. It's been months since my insurance first appealed for my money back, and I'm just now getting my final refund. Feeling pretty cheated. Edit: Advice for all- my insurance (Aetna) told me to never sign or agree to pay anything without consulting with them first, because it's very difficult to appeal for wrongly charged amounts after the fact. Your insurance most likely covers the resin fillings that Westwood Dental offers, so ask! read more

If considering this place please see how there's a recurring theme of feeling upsold unnecessary procedures and interventions. I have never had a cavity or needed anything but routine cleanings, and had to switch dentists when I moved to LA. Every time I've gone to Woodside Dental, they've tried to sell me on sealants and various gum treatments. The staff is wonderful but the actual clinical work feels very much like I'm being upsold every time. Additionally, I had a simple question about over the counter teeth whitening (would the strips harm my enamel) and they wouldn't answer; just tried to sell me on the office treatment. read more

However, I ended up getting a new dentist after every appointment felt rushed, the dentist was less than friendly and more importantly, 3 appointments were moved on me last minute because of the dentist's personal conflicts. I've been with Woodside Dental for a couple years now, and I always have had the greatest experience. I have probably the worst teeth in the world when it comes to cavities and fillings, but they make it bearable. They treat you with the utmost kindness and respect and definitely make sure you are comfortable. It almost feels like family to me now. They address me on a personal level every time I step in and ask how I'm doing. Dr. Mahmoodian is great at what she does. I've noticed I completely trust her and her judgment. She somehow gives me a safe feeling every time I have to get something done. Pam, the receptionist, is a sweetheart. She works with me and my crazy schedule and never loses patience. The assistants there are wonderful also, I love them all. I always talk about how great my dentist is, even though getting my teeth worked on is miserable. We had a limited choice of dentist and came here. She was nice, the office was not anything exceptional but fine. But I definitely felt like it was a bit of a racket. They brought over a list and were showing us different things they thought they should do and how much they cost. In contrast, we just switched dentists and had a much better experience. Great for ucla students. I've been going to Woodside Dental for close to three years now under the student health insurance and I've been really happy with how my dental health has improved during this time. People often complain when dentists recommend work but they forget that this is why you go to the dentist in the first place. I received numerous treatments from Woodside and I know that I needed each one of them. Besides the great care I received, the staff is incredibly friendly and this always made going to the dentist a (reasonably!) painless experience. Best dentist i have ever been to hands down! if i could get more than five stars i would. The office is extremely clean and the dentist is such a joy to work with. She filled in numerous cavities I had, cleaned, and whitened my teeth! I had such a huge fear of going to the dentist, but she completely calms all my quarrels! I also had my wisdom teeth removed here by an oral surgeon, and it was completely painless! I was able to drive and eat normal food by the next day. I had Hmo insurance which was accepted by Woodside Dental. I was over charged for procedures that was not known to my insurance and there was not any price available for that procedure so I had to pay what they were asking. On top of that after 9 months the same tooth that was treated had to be treated again. I've been going here for a few years now, getting invisalign treatment. I initially found them while going to UCLA and a filling popped out on a friday (on my front tooth where it was very noticeable). My then dentist (in westwood), would not return my calls or talk to me, so I found Woodside Dental online (they took my insurance) and had saturday hours and were the only dentist in the area willing to take a new patient as a next day appointment on a saturday. This was great for me. They fixed the filling, which was covered by insurance, and that was it. I ended up deciding to go back to them for Invisalign and have been happy there. I haven't had the pressuring upselling experience everyone else is talking about, but you will get that at any dentist. In fact, my previous dentist in westwood did that a lot (I ended up with 2 expensive onlays from them the same way when I went in for a simple cleaning). I find the staff here very friendly and professional. Pam the receptionist is knowledgeable and helpful. The dental assistants are as well. I have never been given false information or been charged for anything I didn't know about ahead of time, and insurance has kicked in for most of what I get done (other than a certain percentage of the invisalign). Dr Mahmoodian is professional and does a great job. I also like that they send appointment reminders via email and text message if you want it. The hours are very flexible (saturday too!) I think a lot of these angry reviews are from cheap college students who don't live in the real world. I've had many experiences with dentists over the years in different parts of the country and every one of them would try to upsell. They are a business and that's what they do. It's always smart to get a second opinion any time you are facing a large bill. That's just common sense. FYI--I have no affiliation with Woodside Dental. I saw dr Sheba Mahmoodian for a tooth that was bothering me. She was very thorough and gentle. I was very nervous as it had been a while I've been to the dentist. She was so calm and reassuring during he visit that put me at ease. The office is very clean and the staff very warm and accommodating. ALWAYS GET A SECOND OPINION!!! Just putting this out there to advise people to get a second opinion before agreeing to expensive or invasive dental procedures. I have come to this conclusion based on my recent experience with Dr. Mahmoodian at Woodside Dental. I went to Dr. Mahmoodian for an Invisalign consult. She told me, to my surprise, that I had cavities on 12 teeth and would require $3,000 worth of fillings, including a crown. I was shocked because I had just been to my regular dentist 3 months earlier for a cleaning and he told me I was cavity free. When I expressed my confusion as to how I could have developed 12 cavities over the past 3 months, Dr. Mahmoodian made me feel my dentist was incompetent and proceeded to show me "spots" on my x-rays that were areas of decay. She knew I didn't make a lot of money - I am a dance teacher with no insurance - and kept assuring me she would "help me out" and "work with me" so I would be able to pay for the $3,000 worth of dental work she told me I needed. The staff was very insistent about getting me to make an appointment right there to begin work on all my cavities, but I said I needed to figure out where I was going to get the money to pay for all this work and I would call them later. Long story short, because I trusted my dentist and couldn't believe he could have missed so many cavities, I went for a second opinion to my fiancé's dentist. Not only did that dentist tell me I had zero cavities, but he was very alarmed I was told I needed a crown on a tooth that was just dis-coloration and not decay at all. Crowns are not only expensive ($1000 or more a pop) but can lead to complications and should never be done unless necessary. I believe, based on substantial evidence from my own experience, that Woodside Dental and Dr. Mahmoodian specifically are a "sales based office" and take advantage of the trust and ignorance of the general public. Dr. Mahmoodian is AMAZING. If you are a person like myself that cringes when you hear someone say the word DENTIST.... well cringe no more. She makes sure you never feel pain or discomfort. She will ask you every 2-3 minutes if you are Ok or if you need a break. She is a PERFECTIONIST and always makes sure you are satisfied. She and her staff in front office make you feel welcoming and very comfortable. I truly believe that she loves what she does and cares about her patients and I can see this in every visit. I moved to LA from Maine two years ago and needed a dentist out here, I was given a great referral to Woodside Dental and wanted to share my positive experiences with others. They are conveniently located - just a walk away from my work in Westwood. On my first visit there I was immediately pleased with the environment. The office is very modern and welcoming. On top of just being visually pleasing, the staff was extremely pleasant as soon as I walked in the door. Unlike a lot of places I've been there is a long wait because of scheduling conflicts - I have experienced none of this - they are organized and take their patients seriously, while considering their busy schedules. I've gone for my cleanings/checkups so far and have had Dr. Mahmoodian work on me both times. She is very professional and I have no doubt in my mind that she is knowledgeable in her field and trust her completely with my dental hygiene.
