"First Coast" food - 1 of 2 Every once in a while, barbecued goodness calls and, in JAX, I can think of about 3 mini barbecue chains. I've been to Bono's in past years, and it was fine. I thought I'd try Woody's Bar-B-Q, wedged in a quiet mixed use area between the Southbank and San Marco. With South Florida being tri-state NYC and North Florida being the South, not to mention JAX being so close to the Georgia state line, you know that good barbecue ought to be available in this neck of the woods. It is and it was. And I'm glad I wandered into Woody's that afternoon. Granted, it wasn't crowded, but the service went above and beyond. The interior is woodsy and the air conditioning was working beautifully, so I'd be eating in. I had a 2 meat combination plate - beef and turkey - that also came with sweet potatoes, lima beans, and toasted bread. I also had a refillable soft drink with the meal. It was all very good and I could have eaten even more. The price was fair. There is parking right in front of this low key eatery. Since Ernie helped me with my flat tire, I paid for gas, and treated him to lunch at a place I have not been to in a long time. We got there about 10 minutes before they open. So, we decided to wait. We both wanted BBQ. We both ordered the beef platter with two sides. My sides were potato salad and Mac n cheese, sweet tea. Ernie's sides were French fries and Cole slaw. We both enjoyed our meal immensely! The Waitress was very good. Pros: great food, service and atmosphere. Cons: has been updated, but it might be time for another update. A wonderful down home BBQ spot. Although I live just down the road aways I had never stopped by. Today I had a hankerin fer some juicy bones and saucy pulled pork and I sure did get it. Wash it all down with a nice cold draft and it was the highlight of my culinary weekend. The ladies working the bar and waiting tables were very kind and I was never short on anything I needed. The setting is pleasant; it has the old-time BBQ joint feel to it. Staff were amazing: pleasant, helpful, and did great. I think if we caught them at the right time it would have been great. But, our meats were cold, lukewarm, at best. Despite that, the taste was good. I particularly liked the taste of the sausage. We went there with a group for lunch. The group chose where to go this time. My wife and I wasn't in the mood for pork or brisket because we just had it so we both decided to get the chicken tenders. Very disappointed! They tasted like they were frozen and then heated up. The coleslaw was just ok and beans were just ok. My wife said the sweet potato she got was really good. The waiter seemed very new and overwhelmed. The restaurant was clean. If you decide to come here for the chicken tenders I recommend go elsewhere. Hands down the best baby back ribs in Jacksonville, the baby back is a delicate rib dish, requiring just the appropriate amount of heat and smoke and Woody's knocks it out of the park. I always pick up as takeout and my order is always perfect. The staff at Woody's is outstanding. It's an old building off of powers, but clean with decent bathroom and plenty of parking. read more

Shoutout to our local community heroes! We are grateful for the honor of celebrating our Memorial Day with the Love cooked into this food! We are new to the area and we appreciate that we could still have great BBQ delivered to our home so that we didn't have to do our own cookout. The food was delicious and skillfully prepared. I like the depth of smoke and char. It was a little bit of everything we like. Brisket, sausage, pork ribs, pulled pork, barbecue baked beans, green beans, baked potato, sweet potato, Texas toast, and delicious sauces. It was so savory that we split up the portions into two meals. We celebrate our chefs and we celebrate our country's heroes. We only stopped here for a quick lunch. It is not hard to find. You will seat yourself when you arrive. They do have outside seating. You have to let them know inside if you plan on sitting outside. The decorations us usual standard for a bar b que restaurant. They do have a full bar inside. The food we ordered had a short turn over. It tasted fresh and hot off the stove. We ordered Woody's last night for dinner, as we were craving some good BBQ. I had heard good things about Woody's so we gave them a try. We ordered the Taste of Woody's plate to sample it out. The sliced bbq pork, brisket, ribs, and chicken were all overcooked, dry, and bland. The side of onion rings were pretty good. The star of the show was the bbq sauce they gave us. Desert was a small helping of banana pudding (not homemade) for $6, and the mile high pie which tasted like banana pudding mixed with whipped cream and some coconut thrown in. It was not pie shaped, but rather a big blob thrown on the plate. Almost $60 for this! I don't know what I was expecting, but BBQ should never be this dry and bland. I've heard many good things about this place and was happy to finally have a chance to give them a try. Unfortunately, the hype didn't meet my expectations. We tried the salads, one BBQ and one 3-Meat. They both contain meats that were julieneed and generous portions on top of each. The salads themselves were a good size. The dressings are homemade (Ranch and Blue Cheese were both delicious.) Service was great. There is ample parking. The interior decorations were really nice, including the signed photo of John Wayne. So why only 4 stars? Well, the meat just didn't take my breath away. I know we had rabbit food underneath but this should have been a way to sample the quality of their BBQ and my 3-meats were good, but not great. Frankly, they didn't have much flavor at all. No spice rub, no smokiness. The sauces on the table were also mediocre. If I hadn't eaten BBQ at a few other places that were exceptional, I probably would have leaned into 5 stars instead of 4, but between that and the disappointment after hearing how amazing their food is just swung me the other way. I will definitely give them another try down the road and maybe see how the ribs are, and update my review accordingly. I admit that chunks of meat vs. strips might not be a totally fair judgement, so next time I'll go for something more substantial and see how it goes. read more

Woody's Bar-B-Q is a small barbecue chain that I have seen throughout the Jacksonville, Florida area. It seems that they started up here in Jacksonville and have grown throughout the Sunshine State, as well as also having a location in Pennsylvania. However, the majority of their locations are in the Jacksonville and northeastern Florida area. I am sure that Woody's Bar-B-Q would love to have the success of another chain restaurant that began in Jacksonville, Florida and is spreading throughout the United States, Metro Diner. However, that still has not happened. Of course, we cannot discredit the success that Woody's Bar-B-Q has had. This particular Woody's Bar-B-Q location is located near the intersection of Powers Avenue and University Boulevard, not far from Phillips Highway. Both the interior and exterior of this building does not stray far from what you would expect a barbecue place to look like. The service was friendly and professional. The food was at best average. The fries were obviously pre-frozen, rip open a bag and dump it in the deep fryer. Baked beans were not much better. All in all, I will have to give it three stars overall. Not a bad experience, but nothing spectacular either. read more

I haven't been to Woody's in years, I really did not know they still existed. I drove by with my husband and decided to eat there for lunch. I ordered a rack of ribs, fries and baked beans, the ribs and the baked beans were horrible and the fries were very salty. I was so disappointed in the quality of the meal. I hadn't been to Woody's in over ten years because it had gotten to a point it just wasn't worth it. We decided to try it last weekend and what a turn around. It was awesome. Denise was our server and she definitely has her act together. We had great food and phenomenal service. The meat falls off the bones on the baby back ribs. The turkey was unbelievably moist and real turkey breast unlike some places that have processed turkey. The sliced pork was also moist and tasty. All of the sides were delicious and very generous portion size. There was also a very nice selection of sauces. The only negative was entering through the door by the patio. People sit on the patio and smoke and this also allows a smoke to enter the restaurant. If you have smoke allergies be sure to enter through the side door. read more

Glad we gave this place a shot. I had always driven by and seen this place pretty busy during lunch time. I took my wife for dinner here last night and we were pleasantly surprised. They have great side dishes some out of the ordinary for sure. The bbq brisket was flavorful but dry which is probably my fault as I should have this at lunch when it is freshly done. My wife went for the hamburger and I had to get a bite from it as she kept saying how good it was and she was right, really good flavor on the hamburger meat. I got take out from Woody's and I kinda felt ripped off. I ordered a full rack of ribs but they must have given me a rack from a much smaller pig. Not impressed by the beans and the corn on the cob tasted like it was day old. Sadly I do not recommend. read more

Just visited Woody's for the first time. First Marie, our waitress was awesome. I asked for suggestions from the lunch menu, then when the meal came she suggested the sauce to use. Everything was very yummy! The coleslaw was the best I've had! It was fresh, and a nice crunch which means it's not over saturated with mayo! The pork BBQ was so tender and the sauce that was suggested (gold), with a slice of Texas toast. We also ordered the fried ocra, it was perfect! Theresa was very helpful to Marie as well. They work very well together and both make sure the customers are taken care of when the other is busy with other guests! Didn't take any pictures this time. We had a choice, "What A Burger" or "Woody's".....Woody's was the winner. That would be the last positive thing I will say, other than the waitress was friendly. We were seated, greeted and delivered our drinks. We perused the menu as we hadn't been there before. We elected to get the Woody's sampler with all the meats and two sides. We added an order of okra. The okra was cooked perfectly, good thing they buy this already made and only had to fry it!! The meats, sausage was meh...nothing special, the ribs had an odd taste and a nice layer of yucky fat, the Turkey was edible, and the sliced pork dry and fatty. Now, the Brisket...aka dried beef was inedible. Horrible!! It was not Brisket it was shoe leather. If your Pit Master says it's Brisket....FIRE HIM! The chicken, a wing and breast was inedible due to dryness...I wouldn't feed it to my dog. The sauces were ok...just ok The total bill was $30.00. You guys should be ashamed of yourselves read more

Had a late dinner break and I arrived :15 prior to closing. I sat at the bar and a lady asked me if my order was to go. I said "No, for here". She took my order, she was very nice and the pit boss even said hello from the back of the kitchen. So friendly!!! I had their Brisket dinner with two sides. I asked for a specific cut of meat and they said no problem. The meal was awesome!!!! The service was awesome!!! Turns out the lady (Jo-Jo) was the Manager. She has such a great attitude, and she was warm and inviting. Not corporate, just great food, made well, including their home made desserts. I have been going by there some times on Saturdays and Wednesdays for their $.89 smoked wings that are smoking. I really enjoy them as I pretty much live a keto lifestyle. The wings in the sauces are great except for their blue cheese. Their blue cheese is always watery as can be pours like it's buttermilk. It has no blue cheese chunks in it. Other than that the smoked wings are excellent the collard greens are good. I haven't had a sloppy worry in a while but I hear they are great there. I've always enjoyed Woody's. Especially the Sloppy Woody and the 3 Meat Salad, well it used to be 3 meats. It's the 2 Meat Salad now. Not a gripe against THIS Woody's just Woody's in general. I like this one, they were offering to re-fill my drink before I even drank half of it, and offered me one to go, I didn't even have to ask. My favorite one is gone, so I settle for this location instead, it's not far, but the Philips Highway one was walking distance from my house. This one still could be, sort of, but it's s lot farther. Staff was very nice. Place was clean. I placed a to-go order of two Choise Two combinations. This was around 11:15 a.m. They had opened at 11. Their picture on the menu showed BBQQ chicken that was basted with BBQ sauce so I i had assumed that they served authentic grilled BBQ basted chicken ; however just like every place recommended to me for BBQ, sell smoked chicken and gives bbq sauce in the side. THIS IS NOT BBQ BUT SMOKED! There is truly a difference between bbq & smoked. Also the chicken tasted very dry, and it had me thinking, "was this the carry over chicken from last night, being they just opened at 11?" It was not satisfying. The baked beans tasted like canned kidney beans in bbq sauce. The smoked turkey was tender but had no flavor. Not being nasty but I have yet to find autthentic bbq here in Jacksonville. My husband brought food from here on Memorial day. I had a bit of the sausage and cole slaw. The sauage was fine but the cole slaw tasted bad, it was room temperature and had turned. Against my better judgement, I ate a bite of the pulled pork, it was sour tasting. The next day, I am feeling sick to my stomach and I regret that small portion of food. I didn't have any other food, so I can't blame anything else. I don't like to write bad reviews yet it was so bad, I feel the need to let you guys know. Being a holiday, I would think the food would be fresh but perhaps business was slow with people grilling out on their own. I appologize in advance for this 5 star review but I have a bone to pick. I ordered take out today from this location and both orders were for hamburgers but 1 was medium and the other was ordered to be extremely well done or as I say "burnt like for a relative you don't like" and well done burgers & steaks are the most difficult ways to cook them because it is very easy to dry the meat out and when ordering 2 of the same item at 2 different temps many chefs don't get the timing right so 1 burger can be cold by the time the other one is ready. I usually understand when the chef messes up and I send the cold burger/steak back but when the order is take out that is a little difficult, so with that being said the chef nailed my order to perfection, yes it was my girlfriends medium burger was cooked to perfection and in her own words "it was awesome" my XXX well-done burger was charred on the outside yet juicy on the inside and the bacon was not full of fat, it was also cooked just right and that shows my burger was cooked by a true chef, our side order of crinkle cut fries were also cooked perfect, nice and crisp on the outside and full of potato flavor on the inside, the fries at Woody's are not salted so you can choose how much salt to put on them yourself so I taste them to see how much salt to add but these fries had so much flavor I didn't have to put any salt on them at all. Hands down this was the best burger lunch I have ever had & it was so much better than any of the places that only sell hamburgers and I'm not talking about the fast food chains. So now I can appologize for my 5 star rating because that is the most stars you can do on Yelp but this lunch was 10 star worthy and I look forward to my next burger from Woody's. read more

Ok, I'm only giving Woodys 3 stars because he BBQ chicken and turkey was very good. The ribs were dry and just plain terrible! Ribs should be moist and fall off the bone, these ribs were dry as the Sahara, and leather-tough!
