I was really happy with our night here! We got the izakaya menu--and for $75 each, I literally could not eat anymore. It was SUCH a good spread, and perfect for a bunch of exhausted parents who didn't want to make any more decisions. The sushi, the tuna tartare, the chicken katsu, the foam cream with the steak, the crunchy asparagus, the doughnut holes--everything was just really tasty. My cocktail (the scotch-based Kaze No Nori) was pretty good too, though not the most flavorful drink I've ever had. We had a wonderful time celebrating our anniversary at Wren, which is conveniently located right off the McLean metro stop. We opted for the izakaya menu, which is the chef's choice of a series of courses for the table. There were a few things I appreciated about this: first, that our server explained what each of the courses would be, and second, that the kitchen did allow us to substitute one of the dishes that included an ingredient we didn't love for something we would like better. Everything was delicious, but we really loved the Wagyu fried rice (a special that I hope makes it onto the menu!), the pork belly bao buns, and the yaki tako- I'm not usually the biggest fan of octopus, but the way it was prepared was excellent. We also really enjoyed our cocktails and received excellent suggestions from our server. What really made Wren stand out for us was the service. When we sat down, there was a thoughtful handwritten card signed by the entire staff congratulating us on our anniversary. Both our server and the manager truly made us feel like VIPs all night just by coming by our table, chatting with us, and asking about our anniversary. We've noticed that sometimes when we go out to a restaurant to celebrate a special occasion, it can just feel like any other meal out, and nothing could have been further from the truth at Wren. They accommodated my last minute party of 8 even though i could tell they had a very busy night of reservations. The wait staff was extremely helpful and the food was outstanding. Dishes are typically izakaya style (like tapas / small plates). I was eating alone and had the sushi special and the fried corn. Service was attentive but not overly so. When eating alone, sometimes you feel rushed to leave and this wasn't the case! It was also 9/10pm on a Wednesday, for what it's worth. Virginia G&T - not my favorite but it was pretty and large! I'm more of a white linen girl and this pretty much tasted like gin and plain soda water (not enough cucumber or citrus) Corn tempura - sweet corn with sea beans in like a patty shape that's tempura fried. The corn is sweet and so incredibly flavorful. I don't know what the dipping sauce was but I loved it. I was also impressed by the matcha salt... A beautiful touch Off menu special - spicy tuna w/ cucumber, topped with smoked salmon and truffle miso. I'm not a fan of smoked salmon but this was almost infused with smoke. It's tangy, not overly spicy, and fresh Shaved ice - I wasn't going to do it. I wasn't. But man am I glad I did! Matcha flavored shaved ice is incredibly light yet still flavorful, raspberry soft serve is potent and tastes of fresh fruit (they keep two flavors on deck, made in the back), and the black bean paste adds a sweet and weightier dessert presence to the dish. Definitely give it a chance, even if you're feeling full! It's just ice :) It was only $63 for my entire meal. Maybe I'm still shocked because I'm used to paying Californian prices, but I'm here for it! Excellent food and service. Came here during restaurant week. I was only able to get a reservation for the high top tables in the bar. Came in we're promptly seated. The table wiggled, but our server was able to find a way to shim it up. We had three appetizers... Bao pork belly buns, grilled octopus, and yellowtail tuna. I would say, the Bao buns were the winner of these three. Means for the Korean short ribs in the Wagyu burger. I thought the short ribs were absolutely amazing! I will say the portion size was quite small... Three small chunks of meat. But it did come with the most amazing kimchi slaw. The burger was excellent, and a little bit more of a size you would associate with a main dish. We had chocolate, mousse, and some donuts as a dessert. Both are quite tasty. Service was good, but my only complaint was one of the appetizers came out after my main course had been served. The restaurant is quite pricey, a couple of rounds of drinks and apps easily run up a tab of $100+. I love to end the meal with a perfect good-bye, like the Irish Good-bye cocktail. It's like a banana cream pie with coffee. I wish the Lychee Martini was prepared with fresh lychee juice instead of syrup, it wasn't bad, just not my favorite. My pick of apps is for the Tamari Soy Garlic Edamame bursting with flavor with a spicy kick! My hubby preferred the sea salt edamame. While the fries are featured on the menu as a side, I recommend ordering them with a side of spicy aioli sauce! Hubby enjoyed the Pork Belly Bao buns. The Mazeman Noodles are very spicy! It's fun to try with poached egg, seaweed, and a few other toppings on a bed of ramen noodles basking in chili oil that you mix together. While the dish was fun, the heat was a bit too much for me. The Irish Goodbye cocktail helped to cool off my mouth! Wish there were more vegetarian options like a warm miso based ramen or tofu or mushroom bao bun. The Mazeman noodles were too spicy, and I wasn't a fan of the Jidori egg noodles on the older menu. The noodles were very thick and dense with the consistency of gnocchi coated in pesto sauce with a heap of corn, tomatoes, and zucchini. The ingredients didn't blend well together and not at all what I expected, completely missed the mark. Although the outdoor lounge seating with firepits is very nice and allows pets, there's no service. It was a pain point to wait by the bar for the food to come out and then carry multiple heavy dishes outside. Came here for me and my bestest friends birthday (we are a week apart) we booked through open table, very helpful! I definitely recommend making a reservation because it was packed but not crowded. The whole area is pretty much open with the bar in the middle. Once seated, our waitress and server was really nice! Greeted us and even had a birthday card for us. We started with oysters, they were really small, I wouldn't get again unless I want more than 6. The sushi rolls we loveddddd and the presentation was cute. I've had my eye on Wren since it opened. We finally got there this past Saturday. Not sure if we needed a reservation, we made one anyway for 5 p.m. Getting there for us wasn't bad at all. We parked the car at a Metro station and took the silver line to McLean. It's a short walk to the restaurant. The entrance to the Watermark Hotel is next door to Wegman's. Once inside, take the elevator to the 11th floor where the hotel check in desk is, as well as where Wren is located. When we got to the restaurant, the manager and the young lady working the host stand both greeted us. Since the place wasn't too busy at that hour, we got a 4 top with a view...well a view of the trains coming and going from the McLean station. Still, being by a window was nice as it let the sunshine in. We liked the ambiance. The tables are well spaced so that you don't feel like you're sitting cheek-to-jowl with those sitting at the next table. In fact, the spacing affords some privacy. The background music is nice and not overly loud. That said, when it gets busy, the place does get loud. Before coming here, we looked at the menu online to see what interested us. We're talking, for the most part, small plates (in other words "Japanese Tapas"). Our server was very prompt. While she was able to answer most questions we had, she really couldn't answer any specifics as to what ingredients there were in each dish. We started by ordering drinks. I chose a mocktail called, "Little birdie told me". It consists of: "Seedlip non alcoholic gin, blueberry, lavender, yuzu, lemonade". It was garnished with a small skewer with blueberries. I liked this drink as it was refreshing. However, the most dominant flavor was the yuzu. My husband ordered "Clementine soda" which came in a bottle plus a glass of ice. He said it did, indeed, taste like a clementine. To start off, we got "Maguro tartare" which consists of: "tuna sashimi, chili garlic, avocado, beluga caviar, ponzu" and some crisps served on the side for dipping. Also, we got "Pork belly bao buns". This plate had 2 small pork buns which had some veggies in it. As for the dishes --- the Maguro tartare didn't seem to have any "beluga caviar" in it...or...if it did, one would have needed a microscope to find it. The tuna was served on a bed of avocado, chopped tomatoes and we tasted wasabi...so not quite what was listed on the menu but still very tasty. The crisps looked like pieces of thin styrofoam but in reality, they were rice crackers with flecks of seaweed in them. They worked well when it came time to dip into the tartare. The pork buns were quite tasty and very tender. Next up, we got 2 slightly larger plates. My husband chose "hotate" which consists of: "seared day boat scallops, bacon, mushroom, red yuzu kosho vinaigrette". I chose "Gyu toban" which consists of: "zabuton steak, asparagus, shishito peppers, maitake mushroom, sake soy". I didn't taste the scallops (there were only 2 on the plate and I'm not a fan of scallops). My husband ate them all. He said that the strongest flavor to come through was the bacon and the scallops were cooked to perfection. The Gyu Toban arrived sizzling to our table. It was covered with a dome that had a vent for the steam. The steak was cooked on the rare side and was very tender and flavorful. For the most part, the shishito peppers were tasty. However a couple of them were on the tart side. We didn't mind that. I ate the maitake mushrooms and enjoyed them. The sake soy sauce worked very well with this dish. We had plenty of room for dessert. My husband ordered chocolate mousse while I got mochi doughnuts which came with a creme Anglaise with matcha in it. Our server let us know that the doughnuts are cooked fresh and take 15 minutes---no problem. When the desserts came, they were great! My husband's chocolate mousse had rich, dark chocolate in it plus it was garnished with strawberry slices and a sprig of mint. I though the doughnuts were awesome. They were small and round, sprinkled with powdered sugar, crispy on the outside, soft in the center. The creme Anglaise was nicely flavored. I could taste the matcha but it didn't overpower it. The powdered sugar on the doughnuts was just enough to sweeten it all. This dessert was well worth waiting for. The manager was very attentive. He asked us more than once how things were, and did the same for the other customers. When we were leaving, he stopped us to ask if we needed to get our parking tickets validated. We let him know we took Metro...but others who are driving there, be sure to get your tickets validated. This wasn't a cheap meal as it cost $140 + change before the tip. I can see others ordering several small plates, then being surprised when the check comes. So...should you go, I recommend keeping tabs on the cost of things as you go along. I had a delicious glass of moscato and he had the vesper martini. We were both equally satisfied with our beverages, I'm a sweet and semi-sweet (or is it semi-dry) wine kind of girl so this moscato recommendation was right up my alley. For starters we had the oysters, pork belly bao bun, and Brussels. The oysters were fresh and tasty, but quite tiny. The pork belly bun was solid too, he complained that it wasn't as juicy? Recently visited Wren for dinner. Situated at the Waterford Hotel restaurant/bar in Tyson's, this spot does not disappoint. The location is fantastic, with underground parking, starr hill outdoor taproom, and a concert venue too. Their cocktail list is inventive, well crafted, and as someone who dabbles with home cocktail experiments, I can tell they are using el guapo bitters/syrups. Good stuff. Asian style tapas, the menu is separated into raw, fried, noodle, small and large dishes. Every plate delivered was exceptional. Good presentation, prompt service, excellent flavors. We ordered shishito peppers which were excellent, corn tempura, and sashimi to start. Next up was pork belly bao, duck, black cod, and the ramen with egg and pork. Don't sleep on the ramen..it's probably one of the best outside of Annandale or Centreville. The prices are very reasonable for NoVa as well. The only downside? Noise level. It's a beautiful spot, but hard surfaces everywhere, so sound just bounces around. The table next to us was a group of ladies celebrating a birthday and they were...boisterous. We did the omakase and nothing really wowed us besides the uni. To start we checked in downstairs and were sent up the elevator, but it was pretty confusing once we got off. Nobody really told us where to head once we got up to the floor the omakase was supposed to be on, but we eventually found our way. You have to go find the sauna and there will be another host stand inside! The woman helping us there was very kind and allowed us to sit in the waiting area while we waiting for our seats to be ready. The omakase is hosted in a shared room that uses a small portion of their bar area. This meant there were other parties sitting at tables and music playing. Might be nice for some guests, but we weren't sure it felt private and high end for the price we paid for the experience. Nothing was terribly wrong but a few of my dislikes were the hot towel they give you once you're seated was so hot I could barely hold it, one of my first bites which was the abalone was so hot it burnt my mouth, and there were constantly fruit flies flying around or us the food that was going to be served to us. I felt that for $200 a person these were details that should have been considered. Other than that the interior is stunning and our chef and server were very nice. I wouldn't say my experience was worth what I paid, and I wouldn't say rather go to omakase at barracks row again since it's cheaper and the service is top notch. read more

We also ordered the maguro tartare and oysters which was really good. I loved the flavor of the tartare and the oysters also tasted fresh and nice. I have had bigger oysters though so these aren't the best I've had but also not the worst. For mains we ordered the wagyu burger and the gindara. I'm not a big fish fan but my mom is and she liked the gindara! The wagyu burger was also pretty good. The fries and pickle that come with it are a nice touch and definitely add positively to the meal. We also got the Brussels sprouts and those blew me away. I don't know what the seasoning is but it was magical. We got a drink, Tokyo girl, and it was one of the best alcoholic drinks I've had at a restaurant! Not only is it a very cute photo prop but tasted good too. It was sweet but also had a strong kick to it. We ordered the Tokyo chicken but when we the waiter came by to ask if we wanted dessert we still hadn't received the order. We notified the waiter of this and after a bit of waiting, we received it. By then we were all very full but it was still tasty. Everything we had at Wren tasted good and I will definitely be back. The atmosphere here is also really nice and the service is great. My wife and I went to Wren and had the omakase on 7/5/25. The experience was amazing. The food, cocktails and ambiance were great. We paid on tock for a sake and wine pairing but never received it. For the last 3 weeks we have been trying to get that charge removed and radio silence. We have left multiple messages and emails without any reply . We have been communicating with Tsega (unsure of spelling) and she has not been helpful but pleasant. Apparently Laura is the only person within the whole company that can do anything about this. We spoke with Marissa a manager from Wren that guaranteed a call back or email back but still nothing. Laura has been absolutely the worst with communication. We would have love to come back for the chefs and bartenders. But this general manager is absolute trash. read more

There's been a lot of buzz around the opening of Wren Restaurant! Not only because of its inspiration based off the Japanese concept of Izakaya, but also because of its amazing cocktail bar! Did my experience match the hype? Absolutely- I had such an amazing experience dining at their restaurant. And a lot of the reason for that was thanks ythe impeccable service. Being that the restaurant is inside the illustrious Watermark Hotel - there were no corners cut with making sure the ambience and vibes are second to none. The food was amazing blazing!! I had and would recommend trying the Maguro tartare, the Tokyo chicken , and the Ninniku noodles with duck leg confit!!! 10/10. If you are interested in experiencing the omasake experience, make sure to double check which days the option is available! From what I remember it's currently only an option on Mondays!! I looking forward to going back and sampling more of the Chef Hobin Kim favourites/highlights from the omasake menu! read more

I planned a birthday dinner for 7 here and it did not disappoint. The food was so good. I think I ate a whole family style bowl of Tokyo chicken by myself. The restaurant has great girls night vibes and the menus were personalized for the birthday girl upon request. We did the Izakaya experience and it was totally worth it. Prices were reasonable and customer service was excellent. From the moment I reached out, they were super quick and responsive via social media and email. When we arrived, I asked if we could switch tables as the table we were initially given was right by the entrance and they made it work despite it being a pretty busy night. After dinner, we ended the night at Naisho Room which was also very cool. Special shout out to Lauren, Zeina and the entire team at the Wren for making sure we were taken care of. My friend and I ate there last Sunday. The service was exceptional! The restaurant was very relaxing. The menu is quote varied. The black cod was delicious, though the serving was small. My friend loved the house made ice cream. The appetizer "rolls" are really sushi and are very filling. We had the restaurant week menu, but the regular menu is very similar.
