So this is a chain, however, it doesn't eat like one. My older son and I were in the area of the Wu on the East side and decided to stop - it's Ramen after all! They had one of my favorite Japanese beers, the Kiuchi label. Try it. But, we ordered Ramen. This place is tucked away in a strip mall. The place is clean and nicely decorated. I ordered edamame and gyoza as appetizers and spicy tonkotsu ramen as my main meal. I love edamame they are perfect appetizers. As for the gyoza with a touch of vinegar, delicious! How was my spicy tonkotsu? Well it did have spicy hot oil on the top, but the tonkotsu lacked umami depth of flavor. I don't know how long they cooked the pork bones for, but typically it can be for up to 48hrs? My assumption is that it was not long enough. What was the quality of the dashi that was added in? I don't know, but once again it needs to be of high quality to add the needed depth of flavor. I visited Wu's back in November, and I ordered the Miso Ramen and Gyoza dumplings for takeout. The soup is provided separately so the noodles don't get soggy and it was absolutely delicious. I also was able to save some of the broth and make an additional meal with it as well. The Gyoza were some of the best dumplings I've ever had and the sauce was dance worthy. First I want to talk about the ambiance of the restaurant. Thankfully it was very clean, decorated nicely and bathrooms were clean. It wasn't too bright or too dark. Next, the wait staff. Our waitress was an older lady and was not pleasant. I think she realized my reactions to her actions because towards the end she started to act nice. Right when she came to the table she was snappy. She rushed us to order and just sped off. I was trying to ask about appetizers, meats that were stuffed in dumplings and she would cut me off with the answers. I wish Wu's would put more effort in their wait staff. Last the food. It was amazing. We got the crab Rangoon, edamame and Tako balls for the apps. The Tako balls were so good! I ordered the seafood ramen, wish there was a little more seafood in it. My 1 daughter ordered the beef ramen. My second daughter ordered the pork chashu on rice dish. It was originally made with pork but they did substitute it for chicken. My daughter had never tried it before, so I asked the waitress if there was a way to eat it, since she brought a bowl of soup with it, and she's says "just like that" and walks away. I wish they'd have more non-pork options. We wanted to get the chashu buns and gyoza but couldn't because they only had the pork stuffing. All in all of course I'll go back, the food is worth it. Having not been aquatinted with ramen this was definitely an interesting experience. We opted for some warm and cold saki. Both were great and they offer several different types of cold saki. We decided to go with an app of potstickers. They hit the spot. Now moving on to the ramen. I like things spicy so I went with the hottest one our waitress recommended. It was some type of spicy pork. My buddy across from me went with a beef based ramen. Mine was very spicy and the pork was quite tender and tasty. I was looking forward to this place opening since the sign went up, decided to check it out for a quick dinner tonight. If you're into ramen and other Japanese foods and beverages, this is a welcome new addition to the neighborhood! I tried the Tonkotsu Ramen and Gyoza, both hit the spot on a cold January evening. The pork was grilled crisp on the outside, but is melt-in-your-mouth tender on the inside. I was impressed with the beverage menu and though I wasn't planning on ordering any drinks, I couldn't resist a bottle of Kirin. I'll definitely be back to order more when I don't have to work the next day. The decor is elegant and has an izakaya flair that'll make you feel at home if it's been awhile since you've been to Japan or Mitsuwa. The #1 thing that will keep me coming back here is the MUSIC. One of my favorite things about living near Koreatown in L.A. was all of the restaurants you could go to that played K-Pop music and videos. I've been waiting patiently for this location to open. I finally made it in for lunch. I ordered a simple dish, the beef ramen. Big Mistake! It didn't take long for them to bring me the dish which is not a good sign. You're paying $14 for a bowl of ramen with a cup of water and then tip. The dish itself looked nice. Everything placed wonderfully for a good food pic for instagram or any social media platform. However, the taste was disappointing. The egg in the dish was not fresh and it looked like it was placed under the warm yellow light and it didn't taste fresh at all. I'm currently gagging while thinking about it. The beef tender, was between cold- luke warm. The fat within the meat was delicious but it wasn't the same temperature as the rest of the dish. The noodles -meh. The best part? The broth and veggies. The first time I got here, I was with my circle and when we came in the staff were all so friendly, yet also professional. They gave us tips on what food's and snacks is best for us to order and one of my most recommended food, the one that I would usually order was, except for ramen, was generally, their spicy foods! I also love their fresh cilantro and steaks, also their shrimp. We went to Wu's Ramen for dinner on a Wednesday night. It was not very busy and we decided to eat inside. The restaurant is pretty small inside but it is very nice and clean. Our waitress was super nice and helpful with the menu. We started off with the edamame and the steamed Gyoza. They were both very good (probably one of my favorite steamed gyoza in the area). I got the Spicy Beef Ramen and my girlfriend got the Vege Ramen. The Spicy Beef Ramen was awesome to say the least. The beef was so tender and the broth was full of flavor. I went here with my daughter and we thoroughly enjoyed it. I have never had Ramen before so it took me a while to figure out what I wanted. It turns out that I liked my daughters choice more than my own so next time I will be ordering the spicy beef Ramen. I also think I learned that an extra side of broth would be nice, so the next day when you have your leftovers you'll have a little bit more. Wu's has fresh ingredients, fast service, and is quite filling. It can scratch a basic ramen itch. They play soothing music and the decor is a Chinese-Japanese mish-mash, which you might expect from its name. I gave it four stars based upon the vegetarian option (vegans: I think the noodles have egg, so it won't work) and some lack of authenticity*. The broth of the vegetarian ramen was nice on its own, but was not strong enough to perk up the mild-flavored toppings (corn, radishes, scallions, fried tofu, arugula, radish). I know there are many different styles of ramen, but at other places usually they use a strong broth (e.g. spicy miso). The noodles were ok. I asked for shichimi togarashi (mixed seasoning frequently offered on the side at a ramen shop, just like salt or pepper) and they didn't even know what that was. They brought over sriracha, soy sauce, and Szechuan pepper oil, along with salt and pepper. Szechuan...Not Japanese. Sriracha ain't Japanese, but hey, ok, it pretty much can fix anything. I added that plus some soy sauce, resulting in a greatly improved soup. I've never had to bump up the saltiness of a ramen broth before (some of the cheaper places in Japan give you a week's worth of your RDA for sodium in a single bowl). I asked for green tea and they looked surprised (any classic ramen place would know about that). They did respond quickly though by bringing over a coffee carafe full of a hot liquid that was like super-mega-dilute genmaicha. Meh. Based on my experience* I had expected a cold tea. This may not be a problem if you plan to drink alcoholic beverages. They appeared to have many options. So yeah, TL;DR - Vegetarian ramen fresh, but definitely required augmentation to be tasty. Based on my experience*, it isn't totally authentic, but hey, it's in Orland Park and the restaurant has Wu** in the name... *I was last in Japan in 2006, so styles may have changed. Feel free to correct me. **I'm not saying that people named Wu can't cook excellent Japanese food, but yeah, if you saw places called O'Shaughnessy's House of Naan or Alejandro's Pierogies, what would you be thinking? read more
