I hate ordering all at once.. my husband and I were sat upstairs and by the time we got a server, it was obvious they just wanted the entire order at once. They didn't have all the beer options on the menu which is fine. Then the gnat landed near my husbands plate. He sat there swatting his meal the whole time he ate in case more came around. I sat there staring at his plate while I ate waiting for the same. I thought he may have been just bugging cause I didn't see any more gnats. Until the fly came by his head... Wow. My wife and I have gone to Xaga now 3 times for their all you can eat and Omakase. Everything is fantastic. Some of the freshest fish I have ever had. On the omakase, there was one piece that we bot absolutely loved. The waitress was good enough to figure out which piece it was by the placement on the plate. We didn't make it easy. It was mackerel and it was wonderful. I didn't think there was anything that wasn't delicious on the menu. The restaurant is bigger than you think with an upstairs that I have never seen used. I came here on a Friday night with my husband, mum, and baby, it wasn't super busy, but there was a small crowd on the first floor. First thing I noticed is that this place is NOT stroller/wheelchair friendly - to get into the restaurant there are steps, to get to the bathroom, there are steps, and the tables are quite close together so any strollers or wheelchairs would be in the way. The food, however, was just delish! We ordered the hot and sour soup (I don't recommend this) to start, along with the spicy Naruto cucumber roll, which was absolutely fantastic! So great for anyone looking for a low carb option. For mains, we ordered Thai curry, the double delight, and shrimp fried rice. The double delight was absolutely phenomenal! The fish was cooked perfectly, and so was the shrimp - the sauce was sweet with a very small kick, and complimented the dish so so well! The fried rice was my fave - they truly put magic in this, it was so simple but soooo delicious!!!!! The Thai curry was so so, admittedly it wasn't much of a Thai curry, it tasted more like they used a curry powder instead of a traditional Thai curry paste. Still not terrible though! This is one of the few options, I rarely choose from Instagram reels to visit. It looked promising and a bargain to die for. Whilst the food was good, it was still mediocre. You can find better tasting bites along with sushi bargains elsewhere, as there are plenty in NYC and LI. In addition, the service wasn't impressive. If you're known for a certain special or marketing scheme to bring customers in, present that promotion as soon as they sit down. I had to ask for the special menu. We circled what we wanted for the sushi platter but they bring out everything at once but do not tell you what is what. The presentation is beautiful, yes but not presenting it well equals to the same, nothing. After going over the order, we found sushi that we did order, not on the platter or not brought out at all or even planned to. Secondly, sitting in the dining area , closer to the sushi back bar, you can smell when the toilet is flushed (by the smell of urine coming through the ceiling vents). **GROUPON USERS BEWARE!!!** I had a Groupon for this place that was valued for $50 worth of sushi and drinks. When I went to redeem my Groupon, my waitress said that my total was $49.27, and therefore I cannot redeem my Groupon. I then ordered a Philadelphia Roll which cost $6.00, which would now bring my total to $55.27, which should allow me to use my Groupon. The waitress comes back to the table saying I MUST order $10 worth of additional food in order to use the Groupon. That doesn't even make sense as that would now bring my total to $59.27. I was forced and coerced into spending more money than I had to...which left a very bad taste in my mouth. I will say though, the food was tasty. The rolls tasted very fresh, and had great flavor. My boyfriend and I ordered the lover roll, the Mexican roll, salmon avocado, spicy salmon, Philadelphia roll and pork gyoza. The Lover Roll and the spicy salmon roll were absolutely delicious. The gyoza was great. Lightly pan fried to perfection with wonderful flavor. It was very cold inside. I had goosebumps throughout my entire meal. Everything was fine until the whole Groupon situation. I went to Xaga last night and ordered the Sushi & Sashimi dinner for two. My son and I were not impressed. I also ordered the duck fried rice. Also not impressed. My son ordered the fantastic roll. He liked it. Note that he did not love it. I heard good things about Xaga from my Moms Groups on FB. Perhaps Xaga had an off night last night. Even the Diet Coke was flat. I paid for an expensive dinner and left 18% gratuity. The experience wasn't good. I can't even say whether the waitresses/servers were nice or not. They took our order, delivered the food and it took a while to flag one of them to get our check. They didn't come by to see if everything was okay. I had to ask for water for my son and I to drink. As someone who worked in food & beverage, I left the standard tip because I know they depend on it. However, I don't believe it was well-deserved. Like I said, took order, delivered, disappeared and didn't check if we were satisfied with our order. Speaking of, the dinner for two did not satisfy. These places are all starting to look like a chain restaurant. Same exact menus just make sure you name one of the sushi rolls after your neighborhood ie Merrick location has to have a Merrick roll. Food is ok and the portions are large. I had a salmon bento box, the salmon had some kind of sweet gooey stuff on top, not very appetizing. The one thing that really bugged me is when I ordered the sake the waitress opens the bottle and pours it into a carafe. I didn't realize until after she poured it there were cucumber slices in the carafe. This was not a house sake, it was a good bottle of sake and she just ruined the flavor. It's like ordering a bottle of Chianti and pouring it into a carafe with cut up apples and oranges. They have a Happy hour until 6:30 and it was crowded on a Thursday night. This was our first time trying out this sushi place as we bought a Groupon deal for this place and it was a great experience. I only noticed that reservation was required to redeem the Groupon right before I left my house to this place, so I called in to make a reservation for 5 people in about 30 minutes. The staff had no problem with that and immediately offered me a reservation confirmation. Upon arrival, my table was ready and they brought a high chair for my 3 years old right away. The menu was nicely printed and included lots of photos for some feature dishes. My 3 years old was able to look at the pictures from the menu and tell me exactly what he wanted. The food was served really quick and hot and they were very delicious! We ordered the chicken lettuce wrap and crispy calamari as appetizers. The chicken was very tasty itself as well as wrapping with the lettuce. The calamari was fried properly and very crispy, but I felt the size was a little bit small (maybe it was the regular portion, but not enough for us because it was too yummy! lol) Then we had about six different sushi rolls, fried rice and duck fried udon! The sushi rolls and fried rice were about the same as other sushi place, but the duck fried udon was a surprise! It was the first time we ordered duck udon as most sushi places did not have this option. The duck (maybe roasted duck?) mixed very well with the udon and it tasted so so so good! Both of my sons loved the duck fried udon more than the fried rice. We had no problem redeeming our Groupon at the end, just showed them the Groupon and they deducted $50 from our bill. It was a pleasure spending our Sunday night at this sushi place. By the way, the interior design is very modern in this place and the overall appearance seems new and clean.
