I would not recommend this hair salon if you are coming here for anything that requires bleaching. I saw other reviews of people complaining about how this salon ruined their healthy virgin hair after bleaching and how their hair was falling apart. I ignored it because I thought I could avoid it by asking for a stylist that was recommended by other reviewers but it made no difference. 1. They brush your hair SO rough I was actually tearing up because one of the lady's working there was brushing my hair as if it's made of steel. I told her it hurts but it changed nothing. I'd like to NOT come out bald thanks. 2. They didn't do the color I wanted. And they ruined my hair with the way they bleached my hair. I've gone to 4 different salons in the area and have bleached my hair before in the past and this is the FIRST time my hair is falling apart. Literally just breaking apart like some other reviewers have stated. I don't know if they just left the bleach on for too long or what. While I was there I saw other women leave the salon with their hair bleached looking dry and damaged and hoped it wouldn't be me. 3. Haircut was mid. The person cutting my hair didn't cut it evenly and barely touched it. Just did a couple of basic trims. Even I could've done it better. One of the best hair salons I've been too! The service here is best! Once I walked through door I was greeted immediately by one of the sweetest person I've ever meet (so sorry I didn't get your name, but I want to let you know your help was the best!!!). There were complementary drinks and snacks in case you got hungry when you're getting you hair done. In my case, I spent almost 9 hrs there , but I was well feed . Kevin starts off with a consultation of what color and style I want. He suggested a lot of good details and it was a smart idea to follow his suggestions (look at pics below). They would answer all the questions you have and try their best to answer you. After that they get started with the process, the staff were all friendly and get to know you. Rescheduled another visit with Kevin after my first disappointing experience. This time around, Kevin was more attentive, and listened to my concerns about the extent of damage the bleach did to my hair a week prior. He offered me two options which could help repair my damaged hair - keratin treatment or a hair manicure (which I had never heard of before). We opted for the hair manicure, and he warned me that the treatment can cause my color to fade/lighten, but offered to tone it for me if I did not like the color. One of his assistants applied the clear gel product to my hair by combing it in. After it was applied, I sat around maybe for 30 minutes while the product set in. Then, the hair manicure was rinsed and washed off. The end result was quite impressive. My hair was silky smooth, overall, a healthier texture than it was before. I was still concerned about the split ends in my hair, and Kevin offered to cut my hair for me to eliminate some of it. I probably got another inch or two cut off, which was shorter than I had liked, but I had to do something to get rid of the splits - it was getting annoying to look at. My hair ended up being noticeably lighter/blonder than the color I had initially walked out with the previous week (ash brown), but I was still satisfied with the end result. After my second visit with Kevin, he would periodically check up on me to ensure that I was satisfied with my hair. He wanted me to reach out to him and come back in if I was not satisfied in any way. I wanted some fresh chops before flying home for the holidays and despite it being a weekend, Kevin was graciously able to accommodate me last minute. I showed him some inspiration photos on the length and style I wanted and he did just that; stylists always tend to cut off more than I'd like but not here! Price: They are pretty competitive. I'd say it's more than 8th avenue Brooklyn but less than Manhattan Chinatown. My cut without wash was $25. My single color dye was $100 but because I came on a Mon-Thur, there was a 20% discount so it came out to be $80 + whatever I wanted to give as tip. See pic for the rest of their rates! Stylists: If you want crazy colors and balayages, Kevin is the one you should request because he's the head stylist. I was just in for a single color so I went with Q--yep, he's so cool his name is just one alphabet. Quality: I've seen their crazy work IRL; the colors were super vibrant and the hair, super soft and bouncy. I wanted to dye my hair so that my brassy ends left over from my Hong Kong dye was closer in color to my natural hair. I specified to Q that I didn't want to bleach my hair and the end result? A dark ash brown that was soft, silky, and smelled amazing. It even got rid of the crunch sound I heard when I crunched my dry and brittle ends together. Duration: For a single color dye, expect to be here 1.5-2 hours. I was in at 10:30am and finished at 12pm. For balayages and colors that require bleaching, expect to devote half your day here. Scheduling: It's pretty easy to schedule same day appointments or last minute ones Mon-Thur but extremely difficult on Fri-Sun because those are their busiest days. I'd rather come on a quiet day for the 20% discount perk and for more attention on my hair. Etc: Everyone was attentive and nice. I had a terrible experience here today. 2 weeks later and my hair is falling out everyday like crazy. feels like a brillo pad. After having my hair grow healthy the past 7-8 months due to business being closed and the pandemic, I had stopped hair coloring and treatments, the top 5-6 inches from my roots were my natural grown out brown hair color. The long pony tail part of my hair (12-16inches) still had some dark brown/black color and I had come in just to lighten the bottom. A SIMPLE OMBRE if you will.....My hair was thicker and full again, it took a lot of patience to grow it out and lengthen. and i made the mistake to come here.. My goal was to grow my hair out naturally and I had told them that in the beginning: PLEASE DONT TOUCH MY ROOTS AND 4-5 inches below that!!!! I asked the stylists (2 men working on my hair) to please only lighten the black dye on the lower ends of my hair that were previously dyed. I wanted my now growing out natural hair to look like the top virgin hair- natural brown. They started teased the CRAP out of my hair to make a "balayage" ... i specifically only wanted bleach at the ends of my hair to take out the darker dye. I specifically asked for very little bleach to prevent damage and breaking. and they sure as shit did not listen to my needs-- At this point, I should've just done it myself because they didn't understand what I wanted and totally destroyed my hair. listen to your customers!!! They literally burned my hair off. Oh yeah, they don't know how to brush hair. They ripped out so much of my hair trying to brush the teased tops to bottom. how do they not know to brush hair starting from the bottom to prevent breakage and hair loss?? THEY ARENT PROFESSIONAL!!!! after 4hours of processing my hair and washing it, my hair was extremely gold and brassy... gold from top to bottom. I was really disappointed but Kevin was nice enough to offer to fix the color and put a darker shade ontop. I left after 6 hours of being in the salon with an ash brown/blonde shade of hair... still not the natural brown I was going for. I was still charged the full price of $335, which they claimed included a 20% discount. They didn't honor the fact that I was extremely upset with how they handled my service and reversed almost a years worth of making my hair healthy- just to have them bleach it all going against what I came in for. they charged me for a service they wanted to do. My hair is definitely more damaged after coming here. I am BEYOND disappointed and upset that I literally just paid for them to ruin my hair and reverse months of hard work to make it healthy again and they didn't even offer some type of credit or reimbursement. Just go somewhere else unless you want extremely bleached out damaged hair. They do not follow covid safety guidelines either-- their thermometers at the door doesn't work! and they rush about 20 or more clients in at once- not even 2 feet apart.... I've had my hair colored at the previous location before, and surely enough I had to check out this new spot! This hip and modern salon's conveniently located on Northern Blvd with available parking! It was my first time getting my hair done by Kevin, and he was super patient and very informative. I decided to go for ash brown, which took 7 hours due to bleaching, but they took extra care and used olapex to ensure less damage was caused to my hair. I came to this salon twice and once in their other salon in Bayside. They helped me achieve the color I wanted. The price is pricey even with the 20% discount but they work fast and efficiently. I have curly hair because I'm mixed with black and Filipino and they managed to bleach it without destroying my hair and no burning. The only thing is that they couldn't straighten my curls too good and it was dry and frizzy. I came here before and I didn't have that problem my hair was smooth and straight. Maybe it was the stylist who wasn't too familiar with curly hair texture? I had to tell him to put more oil or some hair products so it won't be dry. Oh well that's what Dominican hair salons are for straightening hair smooth. I ended up having to straighten my hair again. I heard of Xcellent Hair Square from many friends and saw many of their amazing hair transformations. I live in Brooklyn and the commute is over 1.5 hours but I thought it would be worth the commute. I had a 10 am appointment and had my temperature checked when I arrived. I had a dark brown balayage and wanted a ash blonde balayage. Although his assistants were very nice and friendly, Kevin didn't even work on my hair at all. After almost 7 hours my hair was washed for the final time. When I sat back down to blow dry my hair, I noticed that my hair did not look any lighter! The assistant assured me that the color would show up when dry. When my hair was finished, I did not notice a difference. My hair was nothing close to honey blonde but looked very brown. In addition, there are bottom sections of my hair that were not colored and my hair looks uneven. I spent 7 hours and over $300 for my hair to look the exact same. Kevin assured me that the color would fade after a few washes. I was very reluctant to believe the color would fade anywhere close the color I wanted simply because of how brown my hair had become, but Kevin kept insisting that it would fade after a couple weeks. I do not write reviews often but dozens of people have been complimenting my hair every single day for the past two weeks, so I had to come back to write this review for Kevin- the hair doctor, Isla, and the salon team to thank them! I showed Kevin photos of the hair I wanted and he told me he will see what he can do aka "say no more" This process took around 4 hours after highlights, toning, bleaching, shampooings, conditionings, oil treatment, + so please keep this in mind when scheduling an appt. The after care for my hair involves argan oil, trimmings, purple shampoo at times, and keratin heat protectant. Keeping your hair healthy looks different for each person, but it will keep your color lasting for as long as possible without fading or changing colors- just ask Kevin or your hair professional. Some tips that I would give to Kevin are to explain each step that he is taking with a client's hair. I have done balayage in the past, so it was fine but for people who have never colored their hair before, it would help then understand the process that they are going through. I would also have liked if less heat was used on my hair to accentuate the shine and dimensions in my hair. Despite these tips, I have no doubt that Kevin will continuously learn the skills and techniques to make beautiful hair transformations possible for each of his clients. Kevin is skilled and specializes in balayage with cool tones such as grays, blues, ash blonds and browns- just a tip if you have a particular color in mind. I liked how my haircut turned out. However, as I was tipping my hairstylist and was about to walk out the front desk receptionist promptly yelled out if I remember who washed my hair, insinuating to tip the hair washer. I typically do tip the person who washes my hair. However, who I tip is my personal decision and I found it unprofessional to be called out like that considering the circumstances. For starters, I had to wait 25 minutes to finally get called to wash my hair. While getting my hair washed, I was getting splashed on the face and there was no apology for it although I had flinched twice. At one point there was water that also entered my ear by mistake and again, no regard. Therefore, I did not feel as if I had a good experience while having my hair washed and think the receptionist should not have called me out based on who I tip and do not tip. read more

Had a really great experience coloring my hair here! I had never dyed my hair before, and my stylists were incredibly attentive and kept me in the loop. Although the salon was super busy, my stylists would constantly check in with me and switch off to continue the process. They also are extremely kind and quick! Expect to pay a pretty penny. I have been using this salon to get a trim and decided to get highlights, having not colored my hair for two years. I made an early appointment on Yelp in which Kevin responded quickly back to confirm my spot. I went in wanting natural cool brown highlights. Kevin came over to assess my hair and to ask me what I wanted. After that, Jason did my cut -- I wanted a simple straight cut -- and most of my color. He told me the price and I was pretty astonished to hear it was almost the same price as bayalage when I was getting a single process color, no bleach involved, but I went ahead with it thikong I should treat myself before the new year rung. It was a fairly straightforward process with another lady jumping in from time to time with the color and shampoo. She was a little rough, reminiscent of a mother scolding a naughty child, from the hair yanking and harsh teasing. I would have preferred Jason for the whole process. Two and a half hours later, my hair was done. My highlights were very subtle and I'm hoping the color will lighten up in a few washes like Jason and Kevin mentioned. This was my first time at Xcellent but certainly not my last! I came in with very grown out roots and a home bleach/dye job. Needless to say it was brassy and inconsistent. Booking was very easy. I DM'd Kevin about 2 weeks beforehand and was told to come in at 10 AM. He answered all questions about pricing etc. When I arrived, I was greeted by their receptionist, had my temperature taken, offered hand sanitizer, and was given a waiver to sign. Kevin then came by and did the consultation and asked for pictures of what color I wanted. I told him I wanted a silver that was not too dark or light, and showed some pics from their Instagram. I wanted a trim ($25) and Olaplex ($30) too so the total came to $335 when taking their 20% off promotion into account. I also added 20% tip so it came up to around $400 which I think is pretty reasonable given the level of expertise and execution. His assistant then washed my hair and started applying bleach to my roots. Kevin came by periodically to check and took over towards the end. His assistant (girl with blonde hair, didn't get her name!) was through as well. She did all the washing in between too and made it a comfortable experience. While sitting around, I've noticed that all the stylists were pretty busy, especially Kevin. He seemed to tackle multiple clients, while managing his team and mixing colors. I was also pleased that Kevin worked on my hair for a good part of the 4-5 hours I was there. Read some reviews that he wasn't around as much. He applied more bleach to my ends because he noticed an inconsistency in the roots and ends. And my hair was still intact and nice afterwards! When it came to the coloring, he applied some to the test strand and it came out exactly how I envisioned it. He finished up the whole head and applied a darker root color. He then gave me a good trim and asked if I wanted my hair curled/wavy. I said yes and it turned out amazing. My hair looked so shiny and pretty. TL;DR: this place has a convenient location with an amazing staff/team and Kevin is REALLY a color doctor! 10 hours in a salon chair (it's my hair, it's stubborn), but it was completely worth it. So I've recently been looking to get my hair re-done for a while and recently couldn't give myself the time of day to do so. I found out this studio opened last week (this is the second location), so I figured I'd book an appointment and I am SO happy I did! Location: Within a small plaza, the salon has plenty of parking if you're driving here! If not, it's super convenient to have the bus stop within walking distance since it's right off Northern. Atmosphere: Xcellent plays the latest top songs which is a big plus when you're getting your hair done. The walls are painted with a gorgeous floral mural and the layout is very cool. Service: You're invited to have drinks and snacks while getting your hair done. They will even offer you a glass of wine - I've never said no to free wine - esp bc they have a nice selection. The staff is super accommodating and thoughtful, checking in with you every so often in case you need another drink or snack. Haircut/color: Kevin is a master of multi tasking and his staff is there to support him 100%. I would recommend preparing yourself when it comes to having his attention bc he will be rotating between multiple clients including yourself, but when he's with you - he's with you all the way. I wasn't offended by this, as his support staff is super knowledgeable and talented with their work. Another thing to note is that they will most likely be chatting in Chinese to one another, but will keep you in the loop - take no offense, seriously. Team: Greeted by the delightful Jenny and other staff, they may do some translating as even English is a difficult with its own peculiar words to Kevin. However, they show your hair complete TLC. They are all extremely sweet and caring, and with any other human being, if you need something, speak up! Conclusion: If you're looking for a place to make you into a magical unicorn, look no further than Xcellent. Disclaimer: my hair took 10 hours bc my hair is strong af (YEAH!) and doesn't bleach well. I am extremely in love with how my hair turned out Went to Xcellent with my younger sister for a hair date. She came in with high contrast old balayage and box dyed hair. They worked magic on her. I came in with previously bleached hair that had grown out and turned yellow. I showed Kevin a picture of lighter blonde, telling him I want to go more platinum but I didn't want it too ashy. I was also very picky with my roots. Absolutely no black, only subtle blending. His consultation was honest and he really listens to what you want as a client. He said we could achieve 90% of what was pictured and at the end he delivered. They use olaplex to protect your hair. They also use a cool protective spray on your scalp when it gets sensitive from the bleaching process. No salon has ever done that for me. Kevin even toned just one strip of my hair to test out the color and made sure I was happy with it before continuing with the rest of my hair. Afterwards they give you instructions for at-home hair care. Everybody was so nice. The assistants worked their butts off the whole time and the lady at the front desk checked on me multiple times throughout the 9 hours to offer drinks, snacks and food. Go on Monday-Thursday to get your 20% off! Worth it. Free parking available. Go bring your friends. It's more fun spending hours at the salon with a buddy. I had a really great experience at this salon! I decided pretty last minute to update my hair, and I only decided to go because my friend was able to just add me to her reservation (so bonus points for Kevin being great and letting me tag along last minute!) I went in with horrible brassy hair and came out with amazing ash brown hair. Kevin is super knowledgeable about hair and color. The other stylists who worked on my hair, Jimmy and Jessica, were also really great at attending to my needs, answering my questions, and helping me figure out what I wanted / what looked good. Also, Jimmy showed extreme dedication to blow drying my hair. He took such care to make sure it was dried properly and my hair came out silky smooth. He also took the time to curl my hair properly and answered my questions about hot tools, curling techniques, etc. At the end of the appointment, Kevin gave me a sheet of paper with instructions on how to care for my hair. This was great because it was my first time bleaching it. I had been nervous going in to this appointment because my first experience with balayage was HORRIBLE and I have been traumatized by it ever since. After going to Kevin, I am more confident about dying my hair and he is now my go-to colorist. I talked to three other hair stylist but decided to go to Kevin and he has a good review on Yelp. Everyone was right. Kevin and his team was very accommodating. How sad is it that I have to dedicate my very first Yelp review to Kevin, owner of Xcellent Hair Square. I first came in with my friend to get a balayage and wanted to try their service since I saw a lot of good reviews. They also had a 20% off for weekday service so it seemed like a good deal and I wanted to see what kind of magic the "hair doctor" can do. My friend and I requested for ash grey balayage. Kevin explained that it would cost $320 for balayage with the 20% + $30 for Olaplex (which I don't even know if and when it was given) + $25 haircut = $375 total. When the process began, the stylists rushed and was very rough with our hair. I already had bleached hair in the past but has since overgrown due to COVID. So, half of my hair (top) is pretty healthy hair but the balayage process, where they TEASE THE CRAP out of your hair was SO damaging. (They also do not guide you through the process of what they were doing so, I did not know why they were teasing my hair because I never got a balayage before..) Not only do they rough handle your hair, but they also think spraying a detangling spray would help detangle the teased hair. If it is teased so "tight," those tangles are not going to come out easy, even I know that. After, they brush your wet hair roughly without sanitizing the brush from another customer. Mind you, your hair is most delicate when wet and you should be gentle with it. I did not realize how damaged my hair was from the teasing until I came home and saw all the frizz. But, I do give credit to the team for checking up on my hair at least 4x to make sure everything is evenly coated. Anyway, so after all that, we were finally done with the balayage and someone took our photos. It looked ash grey, much like the photo that we used as a reference. My friend and I were pretty satisfied that we got exactly what we wanted in the photo (ofc we were expecting that since we paid around $400ish with tip included). But after about 24 hours, I realized my hair was fading to blonde. I was so confused because it was definitely ash grey in the salon and in the photos. I asked my friend to take a photo of her hair, and it was still ash grey. So I messaged Xcellent Square and they promised to re-tone my hair FREE OF CHARGE. Fast forward, I came in today to get my hair "re-toned." I told Kevin that I did not understand why my hair was fading to blonde even though I did not wash it. Kevin checked my hair, grabbed my phone, and took a photo of my hair with my camera stating that it is the lighting but it is still "ashy." Yes, it is "ashy" but I wanted ash grey, which I did not get. He also said that based on the lighting, my hair color can change. Yes, it can change but it does not go from GREY TO BLONDE overnight. I have bleached and dyed my hair many times in the past. It NEVER faded in less than 72 hours. (It seems like a few customers experienced this as well, and their bad Yelp reviews were somehow hidden..so think about that for a second.) I then proceeded to show him a picture of my friends hair, prior to her first wash, that it was still ashy grey (which later turned blonde after one wash as well but she will not be returning to re-tone after my bad experience). He blamed her lighting and my lighting of the photo were different so it is different. But, he agreed to make my ash grey darker which I was fine with. During the process of re-toning, one of the stylist, I do not know his name but he has green hair (such a sweetheart btw) was very gentle with my hair. He evenly coated my hair with toner, and was also gentle while blowdrying my hair. He then proceeded to ask if it is okay to curl my hair. I said okay. I was very satisfied up until this point. I proceeded to the front counter since I wanted to purchase their detangle repairing lotion spray. Kevin looked at my hair, asked if I liked it, I said yes. He then said, oh wait, you curled your hair? That will be a $20 curling fee. TWENTY DOLLARS TO CURL HAIR? If he said $20 service fee, I would've been more okay with it, but just to curl my hair? I am honestly at a loss for words. I can curl my own hair for free. Plus, his sylist NEVER mentioned it would cost extra to curl my hair. If I was made aware, I would have never agreed to get my hair curled. I feel scammed of my money. Xcellent Hair Square ain't it for me, I will not be returning. read more
