I'm giving this place 3 stars because though I've had good experiences in the past, the quality of service has downgraded. My boyfriend and I came in today to do a hair cut and hair oil treatment. I have bought a year-long membership to get my hair oil treated, and all I have to do is pay for wash, dry, style and or cut. I decide to get the oil treatment, wash, dry & cut. Normally without styling is $30. When you want to do "wavy" or curly is when you'd pay $40. I didn't get it styled so I was expecting to pay $30 like I did the last time. The receptionist tried to reason with me why I would be paying $40 instead of $30 and I explained to her that previously I only had to pay $30, if your price increased there should be a sign. She finally agreed to $30 and I paid it. My actual hair service was good but customer service is average. It was my boyfriend's first time here for any service and he was seated to get his hair cut. He then showed the stylist a photo of how he wants his sides to look like and wants it trimmed very little from the top. The hair stylist lets him leave the salon looking like this. My bf was so distraught on how someone could let another person leave a shop with this $25 hair cut. I much preferred my experience at this location compared to when I got similar services done at their Bayside Bell Blvd salon a few years ago. I came in for a color correction, after having grown out my bleached hair for an entire year without any touch ups. Unlike many other salons in the area that perform the balayage technique, scheduling an appointment was easy - they didn't ask for photos, a deposit, or an in-person consultation ahead of time. I arrived on a Sunday morning, and the entire process took 9 hours despite the receptionist initially telling me it would only take 6 hours because I opted for a keratin treatment as an add-on service. Their entire team was incredibly professional, attentive, and thorough the entire time. I had scheduled an appointment for a weekday in order to get the 20% off discount on any services and had messaged Kevin for a rough quote as well as a photo of what I was going for. Communication was great and I was even sent a reminder the day before for my appointment. I arrived the day of and was welcomed by the receptionist Jenny who was extremely nice and offered me tea / water as I waited to be seated. The salon was extremely full and even though I was on time for my appointment, I had to wait for a previous client to finish up so a chair would free up. I would later find out that a lot of clients were booking services since many were students and going back to school. I was finally seated and Kevin had asked to see a photo of what I was going for again and so I showed him a reference photo taken from his Instagram page. It was an ash blonde with a nice natural faded balayage. It was my first time Bleaching my hair so I was super nervous but throughout the process, everyone who worked on my hair (bleaching, coloring, cutting, washing, foiling, toning) were all super nice and assuring. I opted for the olaplex treatment to be included and at the end of the process, though my hair was definitely weaker, it was not damaged or noticeably ruined which I was happy about. My experience overall was great and I loved the color my hair turned out to be. After care instructions are super clear as well! Generally wouldn't rate a hair salon which I was not a direct consumer of, however I believe the service here needs the exposure. Today I came here with my girlfriend whom had a 3PM appointment. Upon arriving we waited 40 minutes before she could even get her hair cut. I understand at times it gets busy, but don't accept appointments if you can't keep up with the demand. It leaves an extremely sour taste in customers mouth. In addition to this. There was an extremely rude interaction I had with one of the cashiers. I was just sitting on the bench waiting for my girlfriend to finish up when all of a sudden the lady from the cashier who had died blond hair on the front bangs comes up to me and just says "I need you to get up" then proceeds to wait 10 seconds before realizing she should say please. I understand if I was in the way, but as a customer/potential customer, wouldn't you think of providing better service. I have no issue getting up, just be a bit nicer. Overall - never coming back. Quality is not the same anymore. I've been here since 2020 and my first 3 experiences were great. Kevin is a master colorist and really knows hair. I haven't seen him the last 3 times I've visited and my last visit was terrible. Previously, they would explain the process to me and would advise me on what color they can achieve based on my hair quality. This last visit, that did not happen and they over bleached my hair. My hair breaks when I wash it, just with my fingers running through to lather the shampoo. They had to cut off a lot more than I wanted, and there was still a lot of split ends. I went back the next day and Kevin was able to meticulously cut my hair, to keep the length and get rid of the sit ends. However, my hair is still dry and brittle, and I'm afraid to get it wet. I texted with them to explain that it looks better after the second cut but my hair is still so damaged. After a few texts back and forth the my stopped replying. As for the color, it's suppose to be a purple ash and it came out looking very light, more like silver. Kevin did offer me a free toner to darken the color in a couple weeks, but I doubt I'll go back. Be careful who you let work on you, their skill levels vary greatly. read more

I went to this place twice. Once in 2019 for a cut & balayage and another time last week for a cut. I held off on leaving a negative review the first time but after having another bad experience I wanted to share my feedback. I originally chose this place because it was running a deal and it was more affordable than the place I went to in Manhattan (Roy @ Unfade). I learned my lesson. If you pay less, you get lower quality. In 2019, Xcellent made my hair look so green because they left the toner on for too long. I booked Kevin because he has the biggest following but Kevin didn't even touch my hair once. The cut was bad too - it looked so choppy. I also found out a year later when I got my hair fixed by Roy at Unfade in Manhattan that Xcellent had put permanent dark hair dye in my roots and that is going to affect how light my hair can get. The blend on this balayage was also terrible and it grew out so poorly (which usually does not happen), I'm so embarrassed of whoever saw my hair. It looked so cheap. Fast forward to today, I went last week for a haircut. I knew I should not have, but I thought it would be impossible for them to mess up a cut. I WAS SO WRONG. I asked for layers and curtain bangs. I don't really know what I got but it's not that. My hair looks so chopped and the bottom looks so unnaturally straight (this happened the last time I came here too). It literally looks like it was cut by knives on a chopping board. I honestly cringe when I see so many girls from my area post their hair from here... like spend the extra money and get better results... have higher standards. It's a better investment since it'll grow out naturally and look better too. I didn't leave a negative review the first time I went because everyone here is really nice... but what the heck!! I tried this place twice because my best friend, who dyes her hair here, recommended it. They may be good for a wash and hair coloring, but I wouldn't come here for a hair cut, perm, or any treatments that you want to prevent damaging your scalp or stinging your eyes. I haven't gotten a bowl/mushroom cut in decades until their stylist, who does everything and nothing well, suggested it. My mom's perm looked like ramen. I'd never bring her back, let alone try their $250 membership for hot oil treatment where you come back unlimited for $25 wash and dry for a look you want to avoid. Parking is a nightmare in this lot, which is one way and tight. there is a garage, but take your chances going in and out. Very disappointed with how my hair appointment turned out! I have been coming here for the last few years for coloring and the quality has gone downhill! I made an appointment with Kevin specifically on a weekday so it's less crowded. I asked for a balayage and haircut, specifically requested no bleaching for my hair since it's a very subtle color that I was looking for! He DID NOT communicate with me but he told his assistance to bleach my hair without me knowing! By the time I found out it's already too late. In addition, he was totally NOT attentive and he even left early without saying anything to me. I was left with an assistant who does only coloring and no one was able to cut my hair in the end so the assistant cut my hair for me. I could tell he knew nothing about haircut and he did such a bad job. In the very end; I still had to pay for the whole service when Kevin was NOT present and the front desk didn't even know how much to charge me. This is a very disrespectful way of taking my money for the service that I didn't deserve! NEVER AGAIN! I got exactly what I wanted! I went to the salon on a Thursday at their opening time 9:30am. I recommend getting an early appointment so you can be taken care of right away because I noticed you might have to wait for a seat to open up if you have a 2-3pm appointment. I was seated instantly and Jimmy and his assistant Amy came to work on my hair right away after I showed them what I wanted. Even though Kevin is popular and the face of the salon, his employees are just as trustworthy and experts at hair coloring! I noticed that the hair colorist and assistant juggled between 2-3 clients but they are very attentive and I didn't have to wait idly for someone to take care of the coloring process. They'll put in a lot of time and concentration on your hair but they're definitely busy hopping from one client to the next to the point where it might seem like they were "rushing." I reminded Jimmy what kind of hair color I wanted during the bleach process just in case he got it mixed up with someone else's hair color preference. But thankfully, I learned to trust Jimmy and Amy because my hair turned into this ash gray/blonde balayage that I exactly asked for! Jimmy also cut and styled my hair :) I stayed there for roughly 7 hours to achieve an ash gray balayage. Even though my hair colorist was busy, he communicated to the rest of the team well and had a great system in place to juggle all the things he had to do. I would come here again because they know what they're doing!! Overall, I got a balayage (~$350), olaplex ($30) and a haircut ($25) & 20% off weekday discount = $335 total. and then tip! Tips: - the salon gets packed! make sure to wear a mask and sanitize frequently to keep yourself safe. - they recommend you to park in the underground garage instead of the level 1 parking if you're staying at the salon for a long time (for balayage / highlights) - no more food/drinks allowed due to covid-19 :( but ofc you can drink water as long as you put your mask back on right away - they check your temperature and give you hand sanitizer when you walk in. they also ask you to fill out a questionnaire to make sure you're not sick. - you can ask the receptionist to help you with giving/dividing tip which was super helpful! read more

The first time I did my hair from them the color came out very easily, i don't know if it was my mistake or theirs but I had to get it done again and bleach my hair = damaging it. The second time I went I just wanted to fix the yellow & not bleach it again; as I told them but they ended up doing the complete opposite. They don't style hair that well it tends to come off & their haircuts are really bad. I asked for long layers and they ended up making my hair very short. I've always wanted to get something on the bolder and crazier side, which is terrifying because you do not want a salon to screw up crazy! But Daniel did an AMAZING job as y'all can see in the photos. It came out even better than I imagined. (Never washing my hair so I can keep this color tbh. ) Daniel was amazing and he listened to my concerns. I showed him what I wanted and what I didn't like about the style and he gave me feedback and ideas on what we can do to make it stay slayin'. Obviously this man got style and I got pics to prove he's a genius. (They also did a test strip in my hair to make sure I loved the colors before the entire application.) Even the girl next to me who was doing a simple balayage walked out with bangin' hair. The service was amazing; this is during covid so they took my temp and had me fill out a quick yes/no questionnaire regarding exposure to covid. All this took less than 10 seconds. They sat me in my chair and got to work. It took me 7 hours to get my hair done, I left the store at 10pm but at no point did Kevin or Daniel try to rush the process or make me feel uncomfortable for holding them there. I debated for hours if I should write this review because I usually don't like to post negative things, but considering how much money I spent here and the poor service I received from Kevin, I figure this might help someone else. Firstly, I heard so much about this place not just from yelp, but from some of my closest friends. Which is why I was SHOCKED at my experience here. Allow me to explain in a list of pros and cons. Pros: - they offer tea, coffee, water, snacks and even cup and noodles for when you're feeling hungry. - Diana, the assistant, was very sweet and took it upon herself to check up on me because my main stylist, Kevin, was too busy with everyone else. Cons: - I had the unfortunate luck of getting Kevin (manager and lead stylist/colorist) as my main stylist, which meant that I didn't get the proper attention I needed, because he had to stop me every 2 minutes to check on someone else. - I had to get my hair colored TWICE because the first time it came out a weird blonde green, and it was no where near what I asked for... the second time was a little closer, but still not quite right, but I settled because I spent 8.5 hours there and I just wanted to leave. - Kevin was also extremely rough with my hair. I kept yelping because it hurt so much, but he didn't seem to care because he was rushing towards the end. - I also got burned twice while getting my hair styled because he was not paying any attention to me. Overall, I felt like I paid so much money, didn't get what I asked for and had a horrible experience. I would recommend that if you come here, avoid getting Kevin as your main stylist. This is the only salon I'll trust my hair with. Kevin and his team work hair magic!! I came into the salon for the first time to color correct and basically re-do my whole hair (I went to another salon before and they didn't do the best job). Roy (guy with cool black and green hair) was my hair stylist and he did an amazing job of making sure my hair was bleached evenly. He really paid attention to the small details and made sure my hair was healthy and protected the whole time. I was so thankful they were able to save my hair and it turned out exactly how I wanted. Update (12/30/2019): Kevin reached out to me the day I posted my review and clarified a few of my concerns as well as apologized which I always appreciate from a business because it shows that they care. He also offered me to come back so that he can make it right. I decided to go back to him last Friday to get it fixed and it took 2 hours to do. This time around it was a lot less busy and hectic & he personally fixed my hair by himself (although being a really busy day and trying to take on more customers than usual cannot be an excuse for lack of quality). That said, the results were so much better and I was definitely more happy with it. I've come here 2 times now & the first time was actually back in 2017 when Kevin was still in the Bell Blvd store. Crazy how much his business has grown since then! The first time I came I was really happy with the results & he did an amazing job. I moved away from NY, but I am in town for the holidays so I decided to go to him again. Let me be honest with you all and give you the pros & cons. Pros: - Kevin is a really nice guy & he's talented at what he does. - All the workers are super nice. Shoutout to Ava that assisted him for my hair and Jessica the receptionist who kept checking up on me. - They have a huge garage and parking space - They give you water/tea and snacks if you're there for a long time - Price is pretty affordable compared to going to the city Cons: - You may not get the kind of care and attention you need. 90% of the job is done by his assistants and he would just check in with me here and there while tending to like 6+ other girls. I get it, you're higher in demand now which is great, but I'm scared he may be sacrificing quantity for quality. That is a real concern I have here. Maybe come on a less busy day. - Price..maybe I should've clarified on the phone prior how much it would be because I was looking on Yelp reviews and I feel like the prices are a bit inconsistent & just blurted out to how much they want to charge. I would ask for a quote. - You may not get the exact results if you show him a picture of what you want so I would highly recommend picking something on his IG or Yelp pictures so that he can replicate. Overall, I'm a 50/50 here. My hair came out pretty, but it wasn't exactly what I had in mind. It came out darker than what I wanted and showed him. If you're on a budget, I would maybe recommend just going here. I personally like it when a stylist really cares about his or her clients and is very attentive. I've been to this location and the other location on Bell and I've always had pleasant experiences for both. The service is impeccable and the stylists are very knowledgeable especially when it comes to coloring services. I've been to several other hair salons and don't trust anyone else but Xcellent and their chains to do my hair. If you come on Mondays to Thursdays you get an additional 20% off. They pay very careful attention to you when you're in the store. They offer snacks and drinks which are important to have if you're staying at the salon for 6+ hours at a time. I would say to call in advance and make an appointment before you come because it can get packed. After you do hair coloring, they will take pictures for their own social media (which has almost 20k following!!) but will also be good if you want some new pics for your gram. Overall, although the price may rack up, in the long term it will be worth it. Make sure you follow all their advice on how to keep your hair color on for months after as well so your money doesn't go to waste. Wonderful experience at Xcellent Hair Square! I went on 1/20/2020 to get a light brown balayage done and I'm extremely happy with the results. They know how to do color, and they will work with you patiently to make sure your hair is exactly how you want it. That being said though, they will be honest with you if your desired color cannot be achieved; they will try their hardest to achieve exactly what you want of course, but if it really cannot be done without damaging your hair, they will give you something very similar. I actually discovered this salon through Instagram. I followed their Instagram page for months before I made an appointment, just to make sure that their quality is consistent over time and over a large pool of clientele, and let me assure everyone: they are top-notch and they will provide excellent service every single time without fail! In light of the pandemic, I must commend them on the precautions they took to make sure their business protected both the safety of their employees and clients. Although there were significantly less employees and clientele, the service was just as good as my first time there! I wanted a tiny bit of brown on the roof so it blends nice into blonde... they put so much brown that my hair looks worse than when I came in!!! My hair has the "grown out roots" look! After a few days my hair is falling out!!! They literally burned off hairs to which I have to part my hair on the other side so it's not as noticeable. I politely told them I am not happy and they should at least refund my my $335 for RUINING MY HAIR! Kevin the owner keeps telling me he will fix with MORE bleach & that he doesn't to refunds. Finally found the perfect place to do my hair. Kevin and his team took their time on my hair - 6 long hours but WORTH IT! After your hair is done, they also offer instructions on how to maintain your hair (e.g., recommendations on products, how to ensure the color last longer, etc.). I have been coming here for years & for all my hair needs, from a simple wash/cut to balayage to keratin treatments, and I cannot say enough good things about this place and the stylists/receptionist Emily. They are always kind and patient and nail the look/color that I show them. Their prices are also VERY reasonable and they don't try to upsell you with the products that they sell there. Great coloring. Be prepared to stay all day. They are great doing ash blonde colors. They are expensive. I would say 300-600 each visit depending on what you want to get done. My Color and Brazilian blowout came out to almost 600. I did mine prior to my wedding and Color came out lovely. My hair however was weak and damaged but its expected that's what bleach does. This review has been long awaited. I dedicate this to my beautiful fiance and pertains to both locations. I can only tell it from a Male perspective so forgive me, but it goes like this. A while back, I realized how tired I was taking her to the city to get her hair done. We were so happy to find such a high quality salon, so close to home! Usually when you find a new barbershop and they put you with the worst barber because you haven't built the repore yet, and that dude zeeks your hair. That cannot happen here. All the Xcellent hair stylist are on point. From wash and cut, to a simple blow dry. Plus they are fast, with minimal wait time.. at least for wash and blow dry. For the more high end styles, such as a balayage, I do know that Kevin and Jessy from the Bell Blvd location are the experts.(Remember I'm bad with names hope I spelled her name right hehe)..but they always hook my baby up! In addition, they are always kind and very attentive to providing that high quality experience. My boo is always on point when she leaves from either location.
