We were a group of 4 and all chose different dinners and every single one was delicious and filling. The moles were truly wonderful. My only complaint is that they tell you the valet is comp but what they mean is that you pay it with dinner and they give you a receipt. Valet is $11, so not crazy for downtown. I think the service alone is a 5 star experience. I will stress that the hostess will kinda side eye you, if you walk in casual dress. I was at a conference in the Marquis and invited my friend to come with me. I made a reservation, because we were on a tight time frame. Telling her that, the hostess immediately changed gears. For the record I was wearing jeans and an Astros hoodie, because the conference rooms were freaking freezing. So that's probably too casual of a look for this place, because all of the patrons were wearing very pretty business attire. The food was mostly great. Actually it was good, but I have a bone to pick. First the chicken enchiladas were amazing. However, there was a bone in my enchiladas and I was like eww. It's not a big deal, but for a restaurant that behaves like a 5 star restaurant with hostesses that look at you funny for wearing jeans and a hoodie there shouldn't be a bone. My friend ordered the same thing and her food came out perfect. The rice, beans, everything scrumptious. The agua de jamaica, disappointed me slightly as it had almost a tart taste to it. Maybe it was freshed pressed from the hibiscus flowers, but I'm use to street vendors selling sweeter versions of agua de jamaica. I think if they were going for a more organic/tart version, a warning-ok maybe not a warning but a heads up, so people don't judge it as harshly. Overall minus the bone and the hostess-who to be fair changed her attitude once she saw I was serious and had a reservation were the only negatives. Everything else was splendid. This place definitely has the potential to be 5 stars and I wouldn't be surprised if it is for everyone else. I would definitely come back here if given the chance, but maybe not order the agua de jamaica. read more

Found myself in downtown Houston for one night and was able to walk in on a friend's recommendation without a reservation. We started with the shrimp empanadas (not pictured) and they were incredible. Perfect thickness of an empanada crust with a generous prawn filling. I'm a fast eater and made sure to take smaller bites so that I could really enjoy them since they only came with three on a plate. I also wanted to make sure to try both the habanero and verde dips. This was an all around great starter and I'm still thinking about them days later and probably could've eaten two orders to myself. To drink, I ordered the mango & chile margarita cocktail which I expected to taste more like a spicy margarita than mango nectar but still a great beverage. I would not be able to have more than one due to its sweetness but it was a great sipping cocktail to pair with dinner. The guacamole and chips were delicious. Great to have on the table while waiting for our mains. For our entrees we ordered the rolled tenderloin and the braised beef cheeks. The tenderloin tasted more like a chorizo which is not my favorite meat, but everything else on the plate was cooked to perfection and plated thoughtfully. The carrots, potato, and masa dumplings were an adventure each of their own with distinct and enjoyable flavors. This was another one where I took my time with each bite. The braised beef cheeks were soft, saucy, and juicy stars of the night (along with the empanadas). They are an unassuming, casual, yet decadent dish that I'd be happy to order again when craving the fancy meats. Had I not been beat up from 5am work days this week I would've stayed for the chocolate pod dessert (I hear it's a must.) Just another reason to return to Houston. read more

Xochi got the looks, but sadly lacked the taste. The menu itself looks very enticing with an upscaled Tex-Mex/Oxacan cuisine. The presentations of all my dishes were amazing, but I'm not paying to look at the food here. Unfortunately the taste was just off and the feel was just not there. I started off by ordering a ceviche. The ceviche itself was a little bit more on the bland side. The onions, cilantro, and tomatoes were a bit overwhelming and overpowered the taste of the shrimp, which is the essence of any ceviche. The whole thing tasted like an upgraded salsa. For entree, I got the scallop. Unclear why they decided to pair corn bread with the scallop. The scallop was a bit overly salted and the corn bread was buttery and sweet, which just did not go well with the saltiness of the scallop. I only ate half of the corn bread. Finally for dessert, I went for the strawberry sorbet. Great tasting sorbet that could have made up for the lackluster appetizer and entree, but why on earth did they add pour of Rosé to the sorbet??? The moment they did that, the sorbet instantly melted a bit and the entire dessert slowly became an alcoholic slusher. Needless to say, I gulped down my sorbet as fast as I can to salvage whatever is left, almost got a brain freeze along the way. The ambiance is modern and casual. Service was fast and prompt. Waitress always checked up on me and also explained the dish to the customers next to me. Unfortunately I paid about $90 (including tips) for the meal, but don't think the price was worth the hype given the lackluster taste of each dish. It has been a while since I've said this for a reataurant, but don't think I would be coming back to this place. This establishment is located in the Marriott Marquis near the Astros stadium. You can enter through the hotel entrance but they do have an outdoor entrance as well. We came here for a quick bite in between work events that were being hosted in the hotel. Our service was great for a large party and we ordered several plates to pass around. All of the food is shareable and delicious if you're not hangry. The taquitos unlocked a childhood memory! The familiar taste of my favorite snack growing up but elevated. All of the food was well seasoned and the drinks were tasty as well. It was my first time having a carajillo and I haven't stopped drinking them since! Our waiters kept checking on us and refilling water (which is always a plus in my book) The food was decent to me. I wasn't overly thrilled. I had the chicken enchiladas and it was just okay to me. I felt the chicken was dry and needed something more to make it a little more juicy but it was just okay to me. Now I am a bean girl and ate the beans like no other. It's a vibe to it in a sense, layout of the restaurant and the bar area looked nice. we came for a wedding banquet in the room had such a nice set up and seating arrangement and felt cozy but not feeling Claustrophobic. The open bar was nice with ice cold topo Chico sparkling water and pure cane sugar cokes, they make some bomb care de olla I had maybe 3 cups amazing I recommend if your a coffee drinker. For the food The Taquitos are really good addictive almost cooked to perfection, their frijoles refritos top with crumble cheese was excellent, they also make some really good roasted vegetables nicely cooked with that butter flavor and they use purple potatoes nice! Tamales they had with the mole sauce was omg! This was a special occasion dinner. We were celebrating a birthday. It was fantastic for that. The cocktails were balanced and well thought out. They had a lot with Mezcal which is not my jam, so I went for things with Tequila. The strawberry Julep was the best mint julep I have ever had and being from Kentucky, that says something. Carlos our server was amazing. We wanted for nothing. It was perfect. And the food was absolutely delicious. Now we went here specifically because they had edible insects on the menu and we wanted a dinner adventure. Even the bugs were tasty. There is a mile made with Ants and it was pretty good. It was worth trying the mole sampler. The place is beautiful. I recommend a reservation, but not necessarily needed if you go early or during the week. I enjoyed this and would like to take people from out of town here. Totally worth trying out if you don't want to eat bugs. Also, they are gluten free. read more

We ordered taquitos dorados, empanadas de camarón, robalo, pescado, enchiladas, costillas de borego and everything was delicious. We also ordered a variety of desserts: cacao, cremoso de chocolate, chocolate caliente. We were so busy talking and eating I didn't get a chance to take any photos. A prefix of five distinct dishes featuring different mole recipes. It starts with their light mole and moves to the darker, more traditional, mole, finishing with a perfect chocolate flourless cake, served warm. Wow!! I couldn't tell you which course was my favorite. All were equally flavorful and plated. Although the choices in margaritas looked amazing, I picked a sangria to start (ahhhh) and then a rich an spicy Tempranillo. Service was great! You can tell they take pride in their food. If I could stay one more night in Houston, I would come back and pretend I am in Oaxaca. I really enjoy the food, ambiance and service. Excited to see a few of my favorite Mezcal's in their large collection, and more excited for the Mezcal cocktails. I went for the Age of Oaxaca, which was mixed with the H Town IIlegal Resposado Mezcal and bourbon, why not?! It was delicious. I had Tatemado for tasting, loved the smoothness. If I keep going, I am afraid I will plan a trip to Oaxaca next week. Xochi is vegetarian /vegan friendly! They made my mole tasting vegetarian. Generally Xochi provided adequate to good service, a good location, and it was a really nice place to gather, however, the food taste and quality was terrible. It seems like perhaps the chef is trying to be a unique chef by offering things that are different, but the combinations he chose just don't work. Pass this restaurant by. On the other hand, the drink menu was imaginative, unique, tasty and excellent. They rely heavily on mezcal, which is very smoky. We enjoyed several of their mezcal-centric drinks (also very pricey). This place was fine but I wouldn't return. We ordered the mole sampler to start which came with four different moles and a cheese and bean quesadilla to taste them with. The hormigas mole was my favorite and the squash one was delicious as well. The red one tasted like salsa. The corn tortilla that was used for the quesadilla was practically inedible. It had a strange texture that was both so blandly brittle but also just rubbery enough on the inside that it was near impossible to cut. We got some sort of aguachile that was fresh but it was somehow so boring. It wasn't particularly well seasoned and the fish itself wasn't flavorful so it just ended up being a little forgettable. My favorite item was the memela which was an awesome combination of flavor and had some deliciously cooked pork. For dessert we had the pumpkin mousse which was a mistake. It tasted commercial and was very basic flavor wise. All in all, I think some of the items on the menu are significantly better than others and you just have to get the right ones. read more

My friends and I came here on a bustling Saturday evening and enjoyed a delightful meal. We sampled the guacamole with tostadas which included tasting some insects which looked unappetizing but were fun to try. I ordered the Callo de Hecha, seared scallops with a light green sauce and pumpkin seeds. The scallops themselves were well-cooked and complemented by the sauce. The dessert is one of the stars of the show - the cacao came with a delightful mix of chocolate delights all enclosed in a hand-painted white chocolate shell. The helado de elote was a unique twist, with what looked like baby corn actually disguised as ice cream. What prevents me from giving this place 5 stars are a couple minor notes, as given the higher price range of this restaurant, the 5 star bar is slightly higher. One issue was the limited parking, though there is valet parking for around $11. The service was a bit too prompt at times, but perhaps a function of a larger group. However, I wouldn't let these small issues dissuade folks from giving this place a try. All in all, I would recommend this to anyone looking for a more upscale dining restaurant in Houston without sacrificing flavor. read more

10/10 this place is worth the hype and definetely earned its spot as a top pick for Houston dining. The restaurant itself is unpretentious, you can stroll in and chat with the hostess from the street entrance or enter from the hotel side at the Marriott Marquis as they are connected. For parking, I did the valet. Im not sure if its less if just eating at the restaurant, I had to pay $65 for the hotel valet plus a $5+ tip that they seemed to include automatically. I was visiting the hotel for the day as I was celebrating my birthday, so I didnt mind the charge, but make sure to ask if youre just eating dinner. We decided to try most of the happy hour offerings and I was not disappointed. It was Cinco de Mayo weekend so they offered HH on a saturday which was amazing. I would return again during the week and perhaps try the bar seating as well. The staff is friendly and welcoming. For HH, we tried the Guacamole, Tacos Papa, Taquitos Dorados, Tostado Cameron and the Costillas Puerco. I loved the different flavor combinations of all the dishes. My stand out was the Taquitos and the Ribs (Costillas Puercos). The taquitos were just bursting with flavor, so fresh and satisying. The ribs had a mole sauce on them that was smokey and savory and blended together so nicely. Im not typically a mole fan but I was just so impressed by the approachabilty of all the dishes. We also ordered the enchiladas dinner (chicken) and the Cachetes de Res. The Cachetes were the best dish ever. If I could give them a million stars I would. Im not even a beef eater and I enjoyed these immensely. I would pass on the enchiladas, they were super bland and almost dry. For desert, we received a complimentary sorbet for my birthday which was so kind. It was refreshing and light. We then ordered the Cacao and the Chocolate Vegan Cake. The cake was just alright, nothing special. But the Cacao, OMG that was probably the best desert Ive ever had in my life. I do not exagerate, I will go back just for that desert. Im still thinking about it. The shell is edible, some sort of white chocolate? Then inside is like 6 different varieties of flavors, you are supposed to try to get a little of each piece on your spoon and eat them together. It has various chocolate textures, including tejate foam, milk chocolate cloud, and chocolate criollo soil, passion fruit jelly things, so many yummies!! Family was in town... so officially needed a brunch place. Either Hugo's and others booked up, we headed downtown to Xochi. It was a nice day to sit outside so we took on the discovery green views while catching up over the expansive Sunday selections. Only complaints is that the restaurant is narrow and can get extremely tight when busy. This is especially noticeable on the buffet. I came into Xochi with sky high expectations, which were met! From the attentive service and lovely seating, I had a feeling I was in for a treat. It was HRW week and I ordered the Menu de Mezcal. The entire meal was delicious, but being a seafood lover, I especially enjoyed the empanadas de camaron. They were flavorful, but not overpowering, and did a good job of preparing my palate for the main course, the cachetes de res (Braised beef cheeks). This was a truly wonderful dish, with succulent beef and perfect accompanying dishes. While I did enjoy my dessert of pan de elote, I think my friend's pastel de chocolate took the cake! Definitely suggest making a reservation beforehand, but honestly, it would be worth the wait either way in my opinion! read more

We waited about 20 minutes, but I think it was worth the wait. Our waiter was very knowledgeable and good. The plates that we ordered were incredible! They tasted so fresh and looked so appetizing. My sister and brother-in-law really enjoyed the oysters and the appetizer salad. Besides the appetizers, we ordered a short rib plate, Barbacoa plate, and the Bistec con mole.
