We don't have dessert. That's not a preference so much as a rule, the kind that hardens quietly over years of adequate meals. Last night we ordered two. Xochi is not a restaurant you eat at. It's one you sit inside of. I had the Costillas de Borrego -- Australian lamb chops in a tamarind mole, with potatoes. The mole is the thing. It's dark and sour and sweet all at once, layered deeply enough that it keeps revealing itself, and yet it never once bullies the lamb it's sitting on. Nothing here is loud for the sake of being loud. Every element seems to know exactly what it's doing and why it showed up. My wife had the Barbacoa de Res de Zaachila -- grilled beef in a guajillo and costeño adobo, hoja santa, potato and carrots, masa dumplings. The kind of dish that makes you go quiet for a minute. I have never been genuinely upset that a plate was empty. I was upset. Not because I was still hungry, but because the thing I was in the middle of experiencing had ended, and there was no way back to the first bite. Then, the two we broke the rule for. The Helado de Elote. Corn custard ice cream, blue corn atole, a corn cookie, blue corn whiskey-infused ice cream. Corn like I have never experienced corn. Corn like I did not know corn was capable of being. It reads on the menu like a novelty and arrives like a thesis. And the hot chocolate, the spiked version -- a small pitcher of Oaxacan chocolate foamed at the table, mezcal and whipped cream. In The Santa Clause, there's an elf who's spent a thousand years perfecting her hot cocoa recipe. I'm now fairly certain this is it, and that she has been holding out on us. Holding all of it together was Juan, who is the reason the evening became what it did. He read us immediately, guided us without ever steering us, and made recommendations we'll be thinking about for a long time. We laughed with him. We traded stories. By the end it didn't feel like service. It felt like someone had let us into something. Houston has a lot of restaurants. This is a place. Go, and put yourself in Juan's hands. read more

This restaurant has been on my list for a very long time. I finally made it in tonight and we had an amazing time! The customer service is great, the food is great, the decor is amazing! I also have to give them five stars for keeping the restaurant ice cold during the summer heat in Houston, Texas, it was very comfortable, so I appreciate that. The food was phenomenal. Walked in around 8:30 p.m. while staying at the Marriott Marquis (located in the lobby. They also have their own valet if you're simply dining in and not walking down) for work, so this seemed like a no-brainer. There was a good amount of seating if I'd wanted a table, but the place was also pretty full for a Monday -- love that for them! I opted for the bar so I could eat and watch baseball. Priorities. I tried the HRW menu: Entremés -- Memelita (4.5/5). Toasted masa pancake, roasted pork rib, refritos, crema, queso fresco and salsa de albañil. So good! Plato fuerte -- Enchiladas of the Day (4/5). Shredded chicken enchiladas with green tomatillo sauce, topped with sliced onions and queso fresco, served with rice with peas and refritos. The tomatillo sauce has a tiny kick to it. I love a subtle kick. It's mixed with serrano and they call it salsa paloma. I also like my food spicy, so this level of heat may not be enough for everyone -- but I thought it was just right. The rice was nothing special and tasted a little old, but the enchiladas were STUFFED. Always appreciate when a restaurant doesn't skimp on the filling. The chicken reminded me a little of tinga, which I'm absolutely not mad about. Will I make it to the third course?! Postre -- Pastel de Guayaba (4/5). Guava cheesecake with guava compote, hibiscus sorbet, hibiscus cream, strawberry gel and a vanilla cookie tuile. The sorbet was a bit tart and I wanted more from the guava cheesecake -- subtle flavor. I did like how crumbly and thick the crust was! And somehow.... yes, I made it to dessert. read more

Xochi -- Houston Restaurant Week All right, we hit up another Houston Restaurant Week, and this time we decided to check out Xochi, a Oaxacan Mexican restaurant located in downtown Houston. Xochi is known for award-winning chef Hugo Ortega, so of course, we had to see what all the hype was about! We decided to drive downtown instead of taking an Uber, and the valet was only $11, which they conveniently added to our bill. Once we walked in, I immediately loved the atmosphere. The restaurant is beautiful, with Mexican/Aztec-inspired artwork and décor throughout. Everything felt very upscale, professional, and clean. Our waiter, Isaac, was fantastic. Since we weren't familiar with a lot of the terminology on the menu, he took the time to explain the dishes and ingredients to us, which was really helpful. Of course, since it was Houston Restaurant Week, we started with drinks! Drinks aren't included in the HRW menu, and I ordered a margarita. Clearly, I did NOT read the ingredients carefully because it was made with mezcal -- and I do NOT like mezcal. I let them know that it was completely my mistake, and they happily took it back and made me a regular margarita. I was honestly impressed because I know restaurants can sometimes be funny about sending drinks back, especially when it's the customer's ordering mistake. The margarita was really good and nice and strong, just how I like it! First Course Since we were with our girl group, everyone ordered something different so we could try a little bit of everything. We had the taquitos, the mamalita, and the empanadas. Everything was really good! The mamalita was basically a small masa pancake topped with pork rib. I will say, it is VERY small, so don't expect a huge portion. But it was really flavorful and definitely worth trying. Second Course For the second course, we tried the barbacoa, which was a grilled steak served with a sauce that you pour over it. Personally, I really liked the steak with the sauce. Some of the others in our group weren't fans of the sauce, so I guess that's one of those to each their own situations! We also had the braised beef cheeks, which were incredibly tender and flavorful, and the wood-grilled octopus, which was another solid choice. Third Course Now, I'm a pretty plain girl when it comes to dessert, so I went with the mango sorbet. It was sweet, refreshing, and exactly what I expected. But then there was the dessert Xochi is known for -- the Cacao. It's basically a beautiful white chocolate cocoa pod, and when you open it up, it's chocolate EVERYTHING -- chocolate, chocolate ice cream, chocolate goodness -- with passion fruit inside to add a little brightness. Final Thoughts Overall, I'm really glad we chose Xochi for Houston Restaurant Week. It's actually been on my list for a couple of years, but I'm not sure I would have made the trip there on a regular night without HRW giving me the push. This place happened recommended to me by several people, and after initial dinner plans had an obnoxiously long wait, I decided to bring the crew here because they had availability for a party of six immediately. Around my way, we have some Oaxacan options, but it's usually a section of larger Mexican menus. At this place, Oaxacan is the main focus. It's a little on the pricier side, and the way the place is laid out feel somewhat upscale. We received cocktail and food menus and the staff were happy to answer any questions we had. In the past, friends have told me to try the octopus and the scallops ceviche. I didn't see the ladder, but I ordered octopus and saw some delicious looking goat tacos on the menu. I even got a mezcal flight ($30, whew). When all the food came out, the gentleman taking care of us took time to explain every single dish in full. In my head I was like is this a Michelin restaurant or what?? It was quite a journey. And every bite was fantastic. This is not somewhere I would come regularly because of the price point, but it was delicious and I would not hesitate to bring a date or come for any special occasion. Conveniently located next to the Marriott Marquis Hotel, you can enter either from Walker Street or through the hotel lobby. If you enter through the hotel, you'll need to walk to the front hostess stand to be seated or receive service. The menu offers an extensive selection, and their happy hour menu has plenty of great options. Xochi is located at the Marriott Maquis in downtown Houston and specializes in upscale Mexican Oaxacan cuisine. They have several moles that they incorporate in their cuisine and can accommodate vegetarians. Tacos dorados ($16) - These crispy tacos consisted of chicken picadillo, crema, and queso fresco all served with mole coloradito. The mole had a smoky flavor with a bit spiciness. It had really great flavor. Coliflor ($9) - This side dish was made of roasted cauliflower steak all served on a cauliflower puree. The puree was so rich and creamy, it felt almost like mayonnaise. Pulpo ($24) - The octopus was grilled perfectly and was firm and had excellent flavor from the red tomatillo salsa and confit tomato. Purple potatoes rounded out this dish. It's served with chorizo, but I don't eat pork so they prepared it without it. Atun tatemado ($38) - This consisted of seared pepper crusted yellowfin tuna, wild mushrooms, huitlacoche, potatoes, and mole amarillo. The tuna was extremely fresh and the seared crust had excellent flavor and paired nicely with the tangy and tart mole. Cacao ($20) - What an amazing dessert! This white chocolate cocoa pod, contained on the inside chocolate texture - tejate foam, passion fruit chocolate cloud, chocolate criollo soil, chocolate sponge cake, some cherry sauce, and pieces of chocolates. The presentation was impressive and the taste was extraordinary, with so many unique types of chocolate and fruit combinations. Valet is $11 and the server will add the charge to your bill if you provide him with the valet ticket. Overall the food is outstanding here and the service is friendly and informative. The creative cacao pod has to be one of the best desserts I have ever tried. Xochi is a must visit for anyone coming to Houston! read more

I went with a group and we ordered a bunch of food and shared. First off, our wait staff was fantastic. Issac was our main waiter and he made sure to take care of us. We had both the mole flight and mole tasting. Both of them were really good, one allows you to try the different moles and the other is a five course meal with a variety of smaller entrees. My favorite was the duck, which had a really meaty flavor to it without being too gamey. The chocolate cake that comes with it had a nice kick to it with the cinnamon. We also got sea bass (off menu), roasted oysters, and the coconut dessert. I thought the sea bass was a little spongy and disappointing as I'm normally a huge fan of its delicate meat. The roasted oysters were also just okay. I loved the coconut desert, especially the part of the coconut that looks like the flesh but I think might just be some sort of sorbet because it started melting. Drinks were great as well. I had a roasted berry drink that was so refreshing with a hint of sweetness. We tried so many different foods that it was hard to keep track like I normally would. My suggestion is to let the staff guide you as they are phenomenal. And yes, parking is expensive. I think valet is worth doing, just make sure to add it to your bill and know that valet closes when the restaurant closes so if you're planning on staying after, you have to move your car. read more

I knew Xochi was really popular and it has been on my list to try for a long time. But it still exceeded my expectations! I thought it would be overhyped but I was definitely wrong. Xochi specializes in mole, and I love mole! They even have a mole flight. While I did not order the flight, I still got to try a tamarind-based mole with my lamb chops. Both the meat and the mole were executed really well. My cut of meat had a bit more fat than I would have liked but it was easy to cut off and didn't detract from the meal. I also tried the molotes de xoxocotlan. Yes, it does have crickets in the mole but they're a garnish on top so you can ask for it on the side or remove it altogether. Our party asked for it on the side. I ate one and didn't think it was bad at all. The potato cake itself was awesome! Lastly, we shared 3 different desserts - the cacao, pastel de guayaba, and the vegan chocolate cake. Honestly, all were so amazing, even the vegan cake! But the star of the show was definitely the cacao. It's a must-get for any chocolate lover. I wish I had a good picture of it but it is beautiful and the whole thing is edible, shell and all! We were in town for the Sweden v Netherlands game for the weekend and came to this spot to grab lunch and watch the game. They do have a few TVs by the bar so you can watch the games. Their mango tajin Palemo was amazing. As for the food, we tried the tuna ceviche, which it may have been just the way that batch was made, but we felt like the lemon flavor was lacking, so we got a few limes and squeezed it on, and it was good. I got the Enchilada of the day, which was chicken with verde sauce - this had a nice flavor and kick to it. I wasn't a fan of the rice; I felt like it wasn't cooked well. But the enchilada was amazing. My husband tried the burger, and the burger was flavorful; however, the potato wedges that came with it were a little bit undercooked. I appreciate that they have a high chair, booster, and kids' menu. It was a really cute decor, and the server was phenomenal. So glad we chose Xochi as our first HRW experience this year! They knocked it out of the park. Much much better than last year. This menu was memorable and very delicious. Our waitress was excellent. Very attentive, very well paced, and she explained every dish as it was brought out. I remember last year being rushed through our meal but I did not feel that at all this time. The decor is very modern. I was happy to be seated on the hotel side as it was quieter in the back and less hustle and bustle. The shrimp empanadas were absolutely amazing. I didn't think I would like them so much. The pulpo had so much flavor. And the desserts were exceptional as always. My only disappointment was that apparently I would've paid less and gotten bigger portions on the appetizer if I had ordered the same plates directly from the menu. This I realized after the meal. I returned to Houston for work and had to come back to my favorite Happy Hour in Houston. It's so good I can't back two nights in a row. April, the bartender is one of the best in the business. Aside from my usually Paloma, I had the Peach Agave, the Houstonian, and the house sangria. The Peach Agave was mezcal, dark rum, Kahlua, peach liqueur, peach pureé agave, lime. The Houstonian was bourbon, praline liqueur, and vermouth. Both are excellent and expertly crafted by April. Didn't forget the food on the happy hour menu! Definitely one of the best meals we've had in Houston. Everything from the food, drinks, decor, and service were all exquisite! Noticing this was created by award-winning chef Hugo Ortega and reading the reviews, we had to make a reservation here (which we did). And since this is connected to the Marriott Marquis where we were staying for the night, it's perfectly convenient to dine here. While many people choose to enter from the outside entrance, it's easier to come in from the hotel lobby to avoid distractions (think of it like a VIP entry). The restaurant has some tables/booths, a few high top tables at the bar area, and a couple private rooms for parties of 10+. Another review mentioned posh setting amongst the crowd; something I certainly noticed. I saw families with kids, people dressed in casual clothing, to formal wear, to suit/ties. Our server (forgot his name) took very good care of us by giving us recommendations/descriptions on dishes and drinks being our first time here. For drinks, try to spiced pluma, a very pretty drink! Margaritas are also an excellent order; I went with the nervious traveler; a margarita utilizing single-barrel reposado and mezcal w/ grand marnier. Absolutely delicious! Now for food, we began the evening with the empanadas and Robalo ceviche. Both of those were very tasty with excellent presentations. The empandas have a sour crema drizzle with queso blanco and comes with a tomatillo salas; excellent texture and a savory shrimp filling. The Robalo ceviche is a pretty dish with the ceviche entrapped by a cucumber fold, topped with a plaintain tostada wiht veggies and an aquachile verde sauce (see the pic for food artistry). And it tastes as good as it looks with all the ingredients giving an explosion of flavors. Just sensational! For entrees, my girlfriend decided on the barbacoa de res zaachila and I went with the bistec con mole. Both dishes were recommended by our server and he was spot on. The meats were super tender with plenty of flavor and the mole for my steak gives a rich touch. I love mole and while I thought about the mole seven course dish they offer, something about steak was calling my name. Fortunately the bistec con mole has it on top for that wonderful falvor I love. Since it was the girlfriend's birthday, we had to order dessert. So we decided on the Halado de Elote and some mango sorbet which they kindly put on a birthday plate w/ a candle. I also got myself a mezcal hot chocolate to wash everything down. The mango sorbet has a powerful mango taste and the blueberry garnish is a nice finish. The Halado de Elote as described is corn-custard ice cream in the shape of mini corn with a blue corn sauce and comes with Texas blue corn whiskey-infused ice cream. Sounds corny right? But oh the flavors of the ice creams and the infusion of corn! I would come back here just for this dessert; you won't find this anywhere else except here! THE BIG: Prounounced So-Chee from the goddess of flowers (Xochitl). This is a great oaxacan-style mexican spot in the heart of downtown Houston. Big open space inside with some outdoor seating if you can bear the houston heat. Street parking and garage available. THE BLACK AND WHITE: I came here with the wife and a few of her co-workers as they finished up some onsites. We came here because it was close to the hotel we were staying at. The dishes we got were the taquitos dorados, cachetes de res en mole pasilla, the pulpo, the robalo, and the bistec con mole chicatana. We shared those items along with some drinks and my favorite bite was definitely the pulpo along with the taquitos. It might sound blasphemous but the taquitos hit hard. For dessert we got the cacao, which was presented nicely in a white chocolate cocoa pod with a medley of sweets inside. It was quite the presentation and tasted delicious. THE FINAL BAMBOO: Overall, the damage done here for the endless dishes (it seemed) and a few drinks was around $235. Flavors were great and I'd definitely stop by again to try more stuff. read more

The portions are small and plated with garnish and high end ingredients. Service is impeccable with a clean, relaxing atmosphere. Opted for two appetizers and an entree for a group of 3 and it was just the right amount of food. The taquitos were delicious, with a nice crisp and tender meat with a mildly cheesy sauce. The memela also was delicious, a unique bite on a crispy maza pancake. The barbacoa was juicy and tender, with a tasty sauce and paired well with the provided blue corn tortillas. Had a fantastic dining experience at Xochi. I came with my team and husband on a Tuesday evening at 6p. Highly recommend making a reservation in advanced. Xochi specialized in Oaxacan style food - one of my favorites. We ordered the taquitos and queso with insects for apps. The taquitos were excellent! Lots of meat and flavors. Insects were yummy, but I was not a fan of the cheese. For entrees I had the Pulpo and my husband got the beef cheeks. The beef cheeks and octopus was so so tender. The sauces was icing on the cake. Finally for dessert we shared a cacao. It's a white chocolate shell with chocolate cake, sorbet and passion fruit jellies. This was very decadent and highly recommend sharing. Service was incredible (never had an empty water glass) and overall had a great experience. read more

Three friends and I stopped by Xochi for HRW last Thursday and had a phenomenal time! Barring a few minor hiccups, food was delicious and we were all well taken care of. We started by parking at the nice valet around the corner from the entrance and were quickly led to our table. The bag rack was a super nice touch and our server was very happy to help us with the table's dietary restrictions as we selected our food for the evening. I ended up going with the menu de mezcal, and everything we had was incredible. I forgot to ask for no cilantro garnish on my courses until after the corn soup had already arrived, but the request was faithfully honored for the rest of the meal, along with another friend's no-avocado request. The corn soup was a phenomenal start to our meal, and all of us at the table wished it would become a regular menu item because we would all definitely come back just to order it. The plantain fritters were also excellent. Our second course was the tuna ceviche which had an amazing combo of textures and flavors. I found the tortilla chips served alongside a bit hard and dry, but the fish itself went so well with the accompanying sauce and refreshing watermelon. Our main course was the beef cheeks with creamy corn rice, almost a Mexican version of risotto. It was delicious but I decided to pack the last bit of it to-go so I could save room for the dessert. I'm glad I did because it was also amazing, not too sweet and very moist. The only part of the evening that gave us pause was that one of the servers that was helping bring out our food happened to be wearing a heavier cologne that some of the more scent-sensitive women in our party had a hard time dealing with. Especially at a place where aromas and flavors are so important, it might be nicer to have an experience that didn't interfere with that, but it's something easily addressed in the future. I'm typically underwhelmed with restaurants in hotels. They tend to be overpriced and mediocre offerings. Xochi is the rare and beautiful exception. Here you have a full bar with a great wine selection. I'd gotten the tlayuda de res which I'd learned was an iconic Oaxacan dish. Steak in mole sauce with vegetables over a crispy large tortilla. The tortilla was firm and crunchy and made with quality ingredients. The smoky mole sauce was a lot of things at once - sweet, spicy, earthy flavors but with the mild Oaxaca cheese, it worked beautifully. I love this place. read more

Xochi does upscale Mexican food really well. Right in the heart of downtown. Interior was really nice and bright with the big windows. We ordered the memela, taquitos, and barbacoa from their Saturday brunch. The food tasted authentic with hearty flavor. I could tell they put a lot of effort into their food. Service was excellent! The parking garages and lots nearby are super expensive. Street parking is probably your best bet. read more
