Visited July 2024 (which seems to line up to the time when they were under "new management"). It's taken me a minute to write this review only because I am finally able to revisit my experience in my mind. I decided to try this massage place out because I read the great reviews. I feel like I owe it to my fellow massage lovers out there to share my experience. Long story short, my visit to Ya Ya Massage Spa was like a bad dream. My first impression of this place was the smell. I cant really describe with words, but it was disgusting. Next, was the room where my massage took place. It was eerie. It had a red glow from a light that had been sloppily painted red? Creepy. (See picture). I got undressed and soon realized there was nowhere to put my clothes because the hook on the door had someone else's shirt and some sort of negligee! Wtf! (See picture). I remember thinking to myself "what kind of place have I come to!" I thought about leaving then, and I should have. I'm too nice. After undressing, I realized there was nothing on the table to cover myself with and I wasn't given any instruction on what to use, so I found a towel in a basket and used that. The massage itself was mediocre and probably would have been considered fine if it weren't for the fact that the woman was playing an Asian pop song on her phone on REPEAT! I said something, but she just changed it to another pop song which then was on repeat. She also did a terrible job draping me--I felt completely exposed through the whole massage. YESSSSS! Honestly, I'm a little annoyed and sick of the tit for tat rat race to get a good massage in Portland... So when I slept on my neck wrong and just happened to be in this area for lunch, I searched and found Ya Ya! I called and asked if I could be in in two minutes cause I was right down the road and just needed a 30 minute neck and shoulder massage. The woman very politely said yes she was available, and literally within five minutes of the call! She was very strong intuitive and absolutely helped my body in a matter of 30 minutes! I can't tell you how many massages in Portland. I've been disappointed with not hard enough., rarely and only one session , but this was absolutely amazing & I really look forward to going back! I'm having conflicting feelings writing this, but my experience here was really disappointing today. I've been here before multiple times, even have purchased gift certificates, and lived in Sellwood almost 8 years. I freaking LOVE supporting my local neighborhood. Apparently they are under new ownership and YIKES it shows. My services on previous visits were 90 minute massages and they were in the $120 price range, plus a healthy tip. There was a service menu with prices behind the counter. Oh boy, not today. No service list, no prices, but they were able to take me then as walk ins were welcome. Cool. She leads me to the room, closes the door, and lets me know "it is going to be $120 for a 60 minute massage and tips were usually 50% of the massage. So that was going to be $180." WHAT?!?! I nearly choked. I let her know my previous experiences and services there less than six months ago were what I shared here above. And my goodness, to ask for a 50% tip on services not yet rendered made my stomach turn. She then told me she ONLY charged me a $3 service fee to use my credit card, like that was a deal?!? I needed that body work badly today, she has me in the room already, and I just said yes. So at $163 for massage, tip, and CC fee before I even get undressed feels like I'm getting taking advantage of. I'm not in a very good head space. The room is sparse, there is no music, the AC is on blast, and there is one bath towel for me to cover myself. Not a sheet, not a blanket, ONE freaking Motel 6 bath towel to cover my bits and keep me comfortable. I was not asked what type of massage I would like, or if I have any areas I want focus on. Then the service starts. Y'all, I've had more enthusiastic massages as part of a pedicure. Swedish massage is always too light and superficial for my needs. I like deep, centered work. She asked about the pressure and I asked her to go deeper, and that I like a firm hand. More light strokes, and a subtle increase in pressure, then back to light strokes. Five minutes later I ask her to go deeper and she said "oh you like deeper touch?" Yep, I sure do, as I said when you asked me about the pressure just minutes ago! At about 15 minutes in, someone walks in, and she stops and leaves the room to attend to the other person. COME ON. When she comes back it's all light stokes again and I can't bring myself to request for my preferred pressure a third time. She turns me over like, 20 minutes in, before barely getting into my back muscles. She completely forgot to massage my left foot at the end of the day, and I'm sorry, but the feet are so important! She has long, lovely hair, and had it down, so every time she leaned over me when I was face up, her hair would brush my face and mouth. It really brought me out of the experience. my crotch is hardly covered, my nips are popping out (one towel for the whole shebang, remember?), it's almost comical at this point. Eeeeeesh. She was a lovely woman, and aspects of the session were enjoyable. I've been getting body work for well over 20 years in all kinds of establishments, styles, and modalities and in different countries. I would recommend finding another place, as this entire experience made me sad. I'm not a Karen, I wasn't expecting a glitzy Spa experience. I know our economy is crazy and folks need to be fairly paid for their labor. I am honored to receive healing touch by anyone. I do however, expect the experience to match the price tag. Finally!! There are so many massage places that do not offer a real good massage and rush through the process. I was told that there is new management. The change really shows! Kiki did an amazing job; she had great pressure through the massage! Thanks...definitely will come back on a regular basis because the prices are so reasonable for 30 minutes and is was 33 minutes from start to finish! AMAZING that I got more than the full time. I got a full head-to-toe massage! I really mean my head as she rubbed my scalp and face and forehead to relax my face! She worked her way down my back and legs and finished with my feet. THANK YOU! This is not the worst place I have been, but also not the best. It was an okay massage that lasted only 45 minutes, even though I paid for an hour. Bad and awkward. Walking in, I was told to pay and tip prior to my massage. This was fine but I was told that my 20% tip as a new customer was "not enough". I'm all for supporting small businesses, but it made sense after the massage why they push you to pay before. The massage is was BAD. The room was cold and no blankets or sheets were put on me. There was no calming music or comfort. Just a small towel to barely cover my butt crack. The massage was unorganized and consisted of predominantly light petting. They finished my massage 15 minutes short but I didn't argue or bring it up. Honestly, I was glad it was over... I was cold and feeling awkward but that point anyway. read more
