I've been coming to Yabi for about 15 years, and it's one of those places that proves you should never judge a restaurant by its exterior. From the outside it doesn't look like much, but the food is so good. The hibachi is my go-to every time. It's honestly one of the best deals around, and is way more affordable than the big hibachi chains in the area, and just as satisfying (if not better). Their onion soup is hands down my favorite Japanese soup of all time. And I have to talk about their white sauce because it is SO good. When you dine in, they give you a whole bottle at the table, which I love because you can go all in. And if you're doing takeout, they give you a really generous portion. One thing I really love is how customizable everything is. They'll make your hibachi exactly how you want it, all the way down to which vegetables you do or don't want, which is a nice touch you don't always get. The staff is always so friendly and welcoming, and service has consistently been great over the years. The space inside is on the smaller side, but they clearly do a ton of takeout business. It can get busy during peak times, but I've honestly never had to wait for a table. I'm not personally a sushi person, but everyone I've gone with raves about it, and you can watch the sushi chefs making everything fresh right at the counter. What sets Yabi apart from other sushi restaurants is the price, the quality, the quantity and the size. The price for the quality is unbeatable! We loved eating at Yabi Sushi when they first opened, then, about two years in, the food quality, service, and overall ambiance just lost their luster. So, let us just say it has been quite a while since we have been back. My wife and I came on Easter Sunday for dinner. We were promptly greeted/seated, and our server quickly delivered our drinks and tallied our order. My wife wasn't too hungry, so she ordered one Arizona Roll ($5.95) and a bowl of Miso soup ($1.95). I needed something a bit more substantial and ordered the Tuna Sashimi Dinner Combo ($18.95), which comes with 14-pieces of fresh tuna, a salad tossed in ginger dressing, and miso soup. Vivi, our waitress, quickly brought out our soups and my salad, then shortly after, delivered our main course. - Let me first say, do not order water here! It's just plain unfiltered Sanford tap water, and it is horrible. We finished a hike an hour before arrival and were parched; I gulped down a massive amount of this crud before realizing it was straight up Sanford tap, Yuck! - The miso soup was ok, but nothing great; the soup had a minimal amount of ingredients and had little flavor. - My side salad with ginger dressing was just meh.... The ginger dressing was delicious, but the salad was just iceberg lettuce, and that's it. How hard would it have been to add some red cabbage, red onions, or sliced carrots in there? - The Tuna Sashimi was the highlight of my meal. When ordering, I visualized the sashimi sliced thinly; however, it arrived in large rectangular cutlets. I love tuna sashimi, so there is nothing to complain about here. Unfortunately, I have to give a thumb's down to the service/staff at Yabi Sushi. Although we were seated quickly and received our food in record time, it seems like the only moment the restaurant staff was actually happy to see us was when we were leaving and saying goodbye. Additionally, our server never introduced herself, rushed us through our meal, and was unable to answer simple questions about my order. All in all, I feel that Yabi Sushi has some good food but could step up their game with sides and appetizers. Their menu prices are competitive with other sushi bars in the area; however, the owners must improve customer service, otherwise more customers (like me) will only make rare appearances. read more

Yabi Sushi is a busy place for it's size! But, for me the sushi was only ok. I definitely noticed most people weren't getting sushi. Maybe that's because it's Sanford, or maybe they all knew better than me. They stayed full with a constant stream of pickup orders and non-stop phone ringing our whole meal though. I thought the sushi rice was good, it was rolled decent, but fish wasn't the quality I expect. Everything was fresh, but I didn't enjoy the tuna tail meat that was used for sashimi on top of the Godzilla specialty roll. It just isn't the cut of tuna that should be used here. The other sushi rolls we had were ok - decent, but nothing beyond your generic, grocery takeout sushi. They were very heavy-handed with the cream cheese with any roll that had it, and it became the overwhelmingly primary flavor. The seaweed salad was good, although a little heavy on the sesame oil (I've never had bad seaweed salad though). The service was great - they stayed on top of everything, and did an overall good job. The prices were pretty low compared to other Japanese restaurants, but I guess ultimately you get what you pay for. The hibachi meals and other entrees coming out of the kitchen looked great, so I would recommend sticking to those items and getting your sushi fix elsewhere. read more
