Today - 30 Mar Was out on business in Pearl City area. I had previously met one of the owners of this restaurant and she was definitely very warm and inviting to come check this place out. So figured today was the day to do so. Looked up their hours - Shows open 10a-9p here on YELP. Google shows they are open. Great! Go park in their parking and lo and behold - "Closed please come again" is on the door; despiiiiite their posted operation signage showing themselves as OPEN. I call the number to see if there is any recording explaining updates at all. Nope. Just the typical "please record your message after the beep". Not even a greeting confirming you are calling the restaurant. Sadly what a buzz kill as I was looking forward to eating some good Korean food! First time trying this place tonight with my fiancé. We were hungry and it was getting late so yelped it and this place came up. When we got to the restaurant there were only 2 other tables there. They seem to get a lot of take out orders so the aunty was busy running around. She was very nice and even apologized for the wait. I got the fish jun and my fiancé got the bbq pork and meat Jun plate. I will say that the plates are well portioned and the banchan were also really good. Everything we had was really good and flavorful. I will say it was probably one of the best fish Jun I had on island. The fish to batter ratio was perfect and you can still taste the egg in the batter. It wasn't overly fried or burnt either. The fish was still nice and moist and you can actually taste the fish. Unlike some places where the fish is like paper thin and you hardly have any. My fiancé said the bbq pork was really good as well as the meat Jun and was by far one of the best he has had too. We will definitely be coming back to try other items on the menu as we are moving to the Aiea area soon so I am very excited to explore what kind of hidden gems are out there. Banchan: Everything tasted delicious from kim chee, fish cake, eggplant, seaweed, firm tofu, broccoli, pickled, sweet daikon. Delicious Korean food from a small restaurant. The kalbi was flavored well, paired well with rice. The fish Jun was delicious. Meat Jun was ok. The side dishes were good. Seafood pancake was crispy and hot. I would get the kalbi, seafood pancake and fish jun again. Next time I'd try the japchae too. I do wish they served purple rice or just had better rice, but not a deal breaker. It is a small mom and pop shop. Service was fast and friendly. We went in on a weekday for an early dinner and were the only ones aside from a take out order. Our food came out quickly. I definitely recommend and will be back to try more dishes. read more

There are usually two ladies working, and one of them truly stands out--she's quick, kind, attentive, and very friendly. After a few visits, my husband and I figured out what we love most. The meat jun and BBQ chicken aren't really our favorites, so now we stick to our go-to combo. I usually get the kalbi with mandoo, and he goes for the kalbi with kimchi fried rice and egg. We also really enjoy the seafood pancake and the kimchi soup--both are always satisfying. The food is consistent every time we come, which we really appreciate. The banchan changes, but it's always good, and they're thoughtful about refilling only what we request so there's no waste. It can get pretty busy, so depending on when you go, there might be a bit of a wait for your food. The space itself is small with limited seating, but it's comfortable enough, and there is a restroom available for customers. Yes, it's a bit pricey--but honestly, that's everywhere these days. Okay so we started out at 11:20 on Sunday at Young's Kalbi but upon entering there's no dine-in and at their prices I wasn't interested in paying $40-$50 for takeout. We left and drove to Sadie's in Pearl City. Pulling into the parking lot I wondered out loud if they were open given it was Sunday....checked the trusty Yelp app only to find they were closed on Sundays, bummers. So still in the Yelp app I looked for other Korean Restaurants open on Sundays in the area and that's how we ended up at Newtown Dining Korean Restaurant. Kudos for a pleasant albeit small dining room. Air conditioning keeping it cool when it was 85° outside. Choose a table and a very pleasant associate brought water as we perused the menus already placed on the tables. Ordering was easy as we had plenty of time to discuss given the drive to get here Kalbi Ribs, Meat Jun, Mandoo, and BiBimBop medium heat. As we waited banchan was brought, pretty good, actually better than Youngs but that's when any comparison stops. The Kalbi cut was too thick and cutting the strips into quarters doesn't make it any easier to eat. In total there were twelve pieces but if they were sliced thinner (as at Young's) you'd get five strips easy to chew and eat with chopsticks. Probably the same weight too. The Meat Jun was cut too thin...even the Meat Jun from Yummy's Bbq at the mall is better and more flavorful. The BiBimBop had no heat at all although huge. Lastly the Mandoo....I did love this. So food....2.5 but service was stellar. Would I return? Yes but to try other things. Parking is in a very small lot fronting the restaurant and shared with Dave's Ice Cream which is another plus for dining here. read more

Five stars. Ordering is simple: either dine in or call your order in and pick it up. We did takeout this time and everything was packed well and still tasted great when we got home. The sea bream was crispy on the outside and flaky inside, and the soon do bu had that rich, spicy comfort you want with soft tofu that actually tastes fresh. Since it was takeout we did not get the full spread of banchan I was hoping for, so I am definitely dining in next time. Located next to Daves Icecream the insides sort of had the same layout as when it was Graces but way nicer furniture and tables and chairs not booths.. The seafood pancake here (if you get it to go) isn't crispy which is perfect for grandma since she doesn't like food too hard. I enjoy Korean food and this one of the local establishments we like to go to. It's down the street from our house and so convenient. A smaller establishment with I think about 7 tables and might fit about 30 diners. We ordered their bi bim bap, spicy chicken, BBQ pork (made spicy for a dollar more) and meat jun, kalbi and meat jun, beef fried rice. The meal came with a variety of banchan which we enjoyed. My son and I like spicy but found that their spicy meats aren't very hot. That's okay, still quite flavorful. At 5:30 on a Monday it wasn't so busy. It got busier as we left about an hour later. I spent $790.00 before tax on 1 small tray Mac salad ($50), 1 Mandoo party tray ($90) 1 large tray Chop chae ($170), 1 large tray BBQ chicken ($230 and 1 large tray fish jun ($250). I'm a plant-based eater so these were my guests' comments- Mac salad was meh, the chicken was very dry and did not have much flavor, the chop chae had a weird plastic taste to it. Newtown is a really homey and cozy Korean restaurant with a lot of local favorites and authentic Korean dishes. It's right next to Dave's Ice Cream - I had a great weeknight date here! This spot is open until 9 pm and we came in around 8pm and the service and food was quick and friendly! We ordered their meat jun + fish jun combo and their bibimbap. They also had an array of banchan side dishes. My fav banchans were the fishcakes and eggplant- love a Korean spot with delicious banchan! I love jun and hate making the decision between fish, meat, or veggie jun. I love that we can order a combo and get two of them! I think next time I'll get the fish and veggie jun. I do wish that they had hotstone bibimbap for the crispy rice, but their regular bibimbap was still very good and felt nourishing! TLDR: The best Korean food that I've had in O'ahu. Large portions with very good flavors. I normally don't go to the same restaurant twice during the same visit, but this was the exception. Side Dishes: Stock standard. I find it hard to differentiate between these, so they won't really move the needle for me. Chap Chae: Chewy, well balanced, portioned well, and seasoned well. It may not be the best I've had, but it sure is up there. Bibimbap: There's something about nailing that fine balance of ingredients and rice within a bibimbap that is not discussed enough. I don't know how they did theirs, but I just found myself really enjoying it. The rice was soft yet offered some crunch in certain parts. All the vegetables felt and tasted fresh, and the beef was good. Kal Bi: It's not hard to mess up how to cook and marinade a Kal Bi, they certainly kept it by the book and it paid off. BBQ Chicken: Juicy chicken that can feed a family of 3. Good marinade as well. Bibim Koo Soo: It's my first time trying this Korean cold noodle dish. I absolutely love it. It holds its own well but it becomes amazing when paired with the Seafood Tofu Soup. Seafood Tofu Soup: Finally, a Seafood Tofu Soup that actually has a bunch of seafood in it. Everything inside tasted fresh and was cooked nicely. The heat of the soup was there yet it won't overpower the flavor. Fried Items: The batter isn't too heavy but it's good. We've eaten here twice, the first time was excellent, the second time was pretty good, but the atmosphere was a little bit off. Normally I don't care too much about ambiance at a restaurant, but we were almost the only people in there and there was an older woman there watching something on a tablet, I think she was probably family. I don't mind that at all, but she had the tablet like REALLY REALLY loud. I mean REALLY loud. It seemed like some sort of game show or something, but it really made it hard for us to have a nice dinner.
