Nimitz Korean Bbq is a very mom and pop Korean Restaurant. It might not have the best service, but it does have great and authentic Korean food! I am Korean-American, so I encourage you to please enter with a gracious mind as I believe the husband takes orders and the wife cooks in the kitchen. The man up front is nice, but I can tell that when he speaks English it can sound like he is being rude/harsh, but that is not his intention. It's simply language barrier! I wanted to try this place out after seeing a YouTube video on this place. Located off of Nimitz Highway, it is a small place in the same area that Mini Garden Express and Joe's Grill are located. A lot of parking, but depending when you go, the lot can fill up. Portions are generous and a set order of sides includes mac salad, Kim chee, bean sprouts, and sautéed cabbage. We got the spicy pork and fried mandoo plate. The pork was nicely flavored - a little heat, a little sweet, and the mandoo were big and stuffed with veggies and ground pork (or beef). Lots of choices and combos to choose from. We went around 6pm and the place was fairly empty so we got our food really quick. Not sure how long the wait is when they are busy. read more

The portions are great. We got the combo 1, which comes with a variety of choices and is easily shareable. Use the top of the to go box as a second plate, since asking for a second plate requires a $1.00 fee. My husband loved this placed growing up, and now I think it's more nostalgic than a good place to go. Our meats just seemed like they had Been cooked a while ago and had been sitting for some time. When my family wanted to get food here, I looked at the menu and I'm gonna be honest -- the pictures do not do this place any justice whatsoever. The pictures online, the menu, and location give off the perception of it being really cheap, but this place is great! Maybe it was what I ordered, but I love this place and I am definitely coming back! I ordered the Bi Bim Kook Soo (cold noodles with pork and veggies in a spicy sauce) and it was delicious! Given how much I loathe all the food options at HNL, it is a blessing because it lead me to Nimetz Bar BQ and I've never been the same since. For traveler's food, it checks off all the right boxes: copious amounts of Korean BBQ inspired meat, locally patronized, fair prices, and just outside of the airport. Each time I'm here, I debate on whether I should bring it on the plane and risk odorizing the cabin or swallowing down big portions in the small confines of a plane seat. Instead, I make this my final stop before returning my rental car. In the NY state of mind, it's most definitely walkable but a real drag if the weather sucks and luggage in tow makes for a bad combination. Speaking of combination, all the ones they have to offer are worth considering. Anything with grilled meat, some sides with a mound of rice is truly my kind of food. Their mahi mahi fish jun is super underrated and I think folks tend to sleep on their banchan, even if some complimentary sides of kimchi and potato salad don't initially feel that exciting. A really safe bet in terms of ordering is their mixed meat platter. It's got a little bit of everything they do well. I am admittedly more accustomed to eating Korean in more traditional settings, but this is more of a local Hawaiian's take. There is Korean on the menu, banchan plates, and a number of items ranging from their famous bulgolgi to pajun and mandoo. Combine all of that with mac salad and garlic rice and it's about as localized as can be. Their decor is best described as "the 80s are alive!" Make no mistake, this is comfort food to the max. The place is super small with only a handful of table can sometimes result in a wait. Otherwise it's a super unpretentious vibe and the customer service is great. Prices have crept up a bit over the years but for Honolulu, this is very affordable. read more

The owner was standing in the way by his car in the next stall and motioned to her to go across to park. She waited and he did it again so she did. Not here, I ordered the Special #1 which the website said was 12.99. Suprise! $19. So I took my take out order home. The only thing freshly made was the meat jun. Everything else was refried or left out under a heat lamp. The deep fried coating was brownish on the meat. All was oily. I could only eat a little of this. The meat and rice was dry and hard. The beef teriyaki was stringy and fatty, the chicken dry. I gave this away but they could only eat a little, the rest thrown away. This is the first and last time I order from here. I love Korean food this is the first time I received such horrible food. Very little vegetables just enough to fill the small section in the plate. I gave 1 star, but would like to give them a negative 2. read more

Nice little hole in the wall near the airport. Went here on a friend's recommendation. The kalbi here is really tender and tasty. They serve it tongue style like in the old days, which you cannot find at many places, even at Korean restaurants that have been in the islands for awhile. I haven't been to the restaurant since the onset of covid. Glad to see this well established business is still making it. Todays visit was kinda between lunch and the dinner time rushes that are very busy with all their takeout business. I had the shrimp tempura. It was very thick lukewarm batter. It seemed frozen and almost warmed in the microwave without any actual golden brown crust to the batter. I can't fathom the condition it would have been if it had been takeout and served 20-30 minutes later. White rice was overly wet and mushy or overcooked. But, the owner was still a very kind and nice man and the banchan was good. Looking forward to my next visit and sticking with my usual Kim Chee Stew. read more

We were throwing a small kbbq party at home and got a few orders of their raw meats and a couple of sides. We ended up getting about 20 lbs of a variety of meats: Korean style Kalbi, spicy chicken, and marinated chicken. They were all marinated perfectly and the flavors were great! I can't choose a favorite because they were all good in their own ways! We loved that they sold these raw to cook on your own so these are perfect for beach bbqs and larger gathering to have restaurant quality food at home! The slight downside was their japchae. It was more on the bland side and they went a bit hard after sitting out for an hour or so which was strange. But other than that, highly recommend this place for all your kbbq needs! read more

You can tell they use the worst possible meat. The rice is subpar. I found chunks of plastic in the food. And the order was wrong. The guy at the counter was extremely mean about everything and wouldn't discuss the menu. He just chose what he thought was best even though I pointed to the picture. Awesome hole in the wall local restaurant! I been craving meat jun and local grinds when I came to visit. This was a last minute decision since I went to the area to go to Joe's Grill Express. I figured, why not since I saw the exterior photos of food and it looked delicious. Hoooolllyyyyy Moolllleeyyyy....so glad I stopped in. We got the meat jun with kalbi and hot chicken combo. This was exactly what i was craving and it hit the spot. I don't like my meat jun chewy, which I learned after trying another korean bbq, so this one was easier to chew. I ordered no rice and they added extra sprouts and cabbage for me which i devoured. The kim chee, was exactly like whatother yelpers said, not much flavor but I didn't care because the other sides made up for it. I also added more of the spicy sauce they have on table to it. The rice is a scoop and a half but not a big deal since the sides helped offset it. The mac salad was actually pretty good too. I was pleasantly surprised. We loved the taste of the kalbi and chicken, you can tell they marinated the meat for days. Every bite had so much flavor which is exactly how marinated meat should be. We ended up ordering the special plate to go to eat on our flight. Went through security easily since there were no liquids. Only downside was no public bathroom so I didn't drink much water because I didn't want to risk having to go to the bathroom. This is your hole in the wall restaurant. Amazing taste, local mom and pop cooking and serving, and tiny place. Another plus, our rental car place was next door. Don't be alarmed by the exterior, it's clean on the inside.
