The food was okay, but I'll never order from them again because of the owners/managers attitude. The way he treated me was just appalling. They sent me the wrong roll. Instead of apologizing and making it right, he argued and told me they sent me the right roll. He then tried to lie about the ingredients - but I've worked at a sushi restaurant for 4 years so I know what's what. He begrudgingly agreed to replace it for me the next time I ordered. The next time came and I called to place the order. It was the same guy. Instead of just giving me the replacement roll like he said he would, he began arguing with me again and this time blamed me for confusing his staff - saying it was my fault they got it wrong... I ordered online with no instructions for the roll, not sure how I could've confused them. I got the roll, but after being treated that way a second time, I really had no appetite for their food. "Pad thai" tasted like a combination of soap and vinegar with wilted, brown vegetables and browner, blech-y looking "noodles." No flavor to boot. Had a Groupon so we decided to try this place. As we walked in a child bounced off of a sofa in the lobby. A woman chided him and sent him back to the kitchen. It was not an auspicious start to our experience. They seated us in the bar area although we would have preferred to be seated in the restaurant. It was a little noisy in the bar with conversations going on. Not to the point where we had to leave but it would have been nice to have been in a quieter spot. We had many choices and I chose the chicken pad Thai and my friend had chicken teriyaki. He had ordered the beef negamaki dinner but the server came back and said that they were out of that. That is the 1st time that I have been to an Asian restaurant where they had run out of a basic meal. My meal was bland and uninteresting although my friend said that his was good. I know that he was very hungry and when I looked at his chicken teriyaki it was bright white slices of chicken that looks like it may have been boiled with a brown teriyaki sauce on it. Oddly this place sounds like a Japanese restaurant by it's name, but is just as much a Chinese restaurant... maybe more Chinese than anything. The food was actually perfectly fine, nothing stellar mind you, but the ambiance is so totally off that it's hard to focus on the food. Sushi is all about the "Zen" of eating for me. Raw fish is raw fish, but it can become magical when combined with the right overall multi-sensory experience. Forget about that at this place. The dining area is messy with carts of dirty dishes left in view all night long, and piles of supplies sloppily left laying around. The bathrooms are nicely appointed but left messy and unattended. But the zinger for us was the way our night went. When we entered, we had to wait several minutes for anyone to greet us. No one at the sushi bar and no one at the desk. When the desk lady finally came out she was about as friendly as a customs agent. From that point on it only got worse, with CNN blasting throughout the place from the bar where not a single person was sitting (and no bartender either). No word of a lie, halfway through our meal our waitress quit because the nasty desk lady was trying to make her pay for an ordering mistake (not legal in RI), and then a kitchen guy started mopping the floor right under our table with a stinky spaghetti mop that stunk of kitchen grease and spic and span. I'm not exaggerating... he literally brushed the mop against my shoe while I was eating sushi! When I asked him to stop, he made an "I don't speak English" kind of face and then started again a few tables away. Anyway, you get the point. Right idea... wrong execution. Despite the pastiche of some nicer decor elements, it is clear that the owners of this place comes from a Chinese take-out lineage that they can't shake. Probably OK for take out if you're not sensitive to some questionable cleanliness in the kitchen, but do yourself a favor and don't eat in. read more

This used to be my go-to for salmon/tuna sashimi - I'd order at least once a week. However, over the past couple of months, the quality of the sashimi has been hit or miss, at best - of the four orders I placed in that time period, three contained fish that was definitely not fresh (and one made me sick the entire next day). The white tuna and salmon hand rolls I received last night were questionable - fishy smell and taste. Not completely inedible but right on the edge. The saving grace is that the noodle dishes and Chinese food are always good (delicious pad thai!). Not sure what is going on, but, at least for now, I will be getting my sashimi elsewhere. read more

My sister and I tried Yamafuji tonight, Groupon in hand! This restaurant offers Chinese and Japanese food with two different menus to look over. We decided to order sushi rolls and a combination plate of appetizers to split. Everything was delicious and tasted very fresh. The beef teriyaki and the boneless ribs were perfect, well cooked meat with very little fat (some places just give you lard to chew on it seems) I ordered the Princess Roll which was very good and my sister ordered the 2014 Roll which she said she enjoyed very much. The service was very good and prompt and we enough to bring home leftovers so thats definitely a plus! I'd definitely eat here again to try some of the other food. read more

Me and girlfriend just lef Yama Fuji stuffed and totally satisfied. Luckily we were able to sit at the sushi bar, which I had never done before. The sushi chef greeted us as we sat down which was nice becuase I never see too much communication between the sushi chefs and customers in other restaraunts. I ordered a spicy tuna roll, the Flower Roll, and tamago sushi. My girlfriend ordered the chicken hibachi, shrimp sushi and king crab sushi. She enjoyed the chicken and shrimp but the king crab sushi was the star of her meal. My spicy tuna roll was excellent as was the tamago but the Flower roll was out of this world!! It was amazing!! The sushi chef even gave us a sample of white tuna, which we were ogling the presentation of prior to him giving it to us because it looked delicious, and it was also incredibly good. The flavor was so unique and unlike anything I've had before and I am a bit of a sushi fanatic. For our entrees, I got the Hulk Roll and the Phoenix Roll and my boyfriend got the Yama Fuji Roll and the Sexy Girl Roll. All of them were so tasty and bursting with flavor. I wish I lived closer to this place because I would be eating here 24/7! Highly recommend checking out Yama Fuji if you are a sushi fanatic. The service was also excellent, there was a large party who ordered a sushi boat so our order was going to take a little longer and the waitress gave us a free edamame appetizer while we waited. This is THE BEST Asian place around. They have a fantastic selection of sushi, chinese and Thai. Some of my favorites are the pu pu platter (for the chicken fingers and the boneless spareribs), the crab rangoon, the spicy tuna roll and of course the pork fried rice is out of this world. I have never dined in so I can't comment on the service but have been doing take out and delivery for years without an issue. Ordered online through Yelp app to have food delivered and once my order was placed, the estimated arrival time was 7:24 pm. Food arrived a little after 6:45, which was nice. However, I was only ordering food for myself and getting to the $20 minimum without ordering too much food was a bit of a challenge. I would also suggest the restaurant choose between having a minimum OR a delivery fee, not both. I think it makes the delivery option too pricy imposing a minimum order and a delivery fee. I ordered the Yama Fuji House Salad, egg drop soup and a Philadelphia roll. Egg drop soup and philly roll were good but as they are staple menu items, I expected them to be fine. The Yama Fuji House Salad was a very pleasant surprise and I loved it. It was delicious and had a lot more sushi pieces than I expected. I would definitely order it again. Finally, Yama Fuji shows up with it's beautiful AND CLEAN interior and fancy dining room and I'm begging him to go back! The menu(s) are big, as are the portions, so there's plenty to choose from. What a great time we had at Yamafuji! Big beautiful bar with the best Mai Tai's ever...full of two kinds of rum, fresh juice and the obligatory fruit...but what a killer drink. The decor is just beautiful and elegant, with darkened windows to add to the mood. I wish we were heading out for a full dinner but just had drinks and appetizers on our minds. We enjoyed delicious shrimp dumplings with a killer sauce and some oh so healthy nime chow. The place is huge, even has a function room in the back for private parties. The service is top notch aided by the charm and talent of the manager Kobe. He made us feel so welcome and even treated us to a fried ice cream dessert. Next time we're planning on an all out feast and will definitely be back to Yamafuji soon! read more

They might not speaks perfect English and might seem to hold an attitude that can be perceived as rude or socially avoidant in the context of american culture. But they were hardworking and decent folks. Unfortunately, because of the language barrier faced by many previous waiters, they used to get the drinks or food order wrong. Luckily, when that happens, the hostess and her husband would do their best to accommodate and make up for the mistakes by either giving out free entrees or free wines. Additionally, the hostess and her husband are always professional. They have also hired many natively-born waiters to improve their service. On top of that, the food is amazingly authentic and delicious. I grew up in China, therefore I speak with total confidence and authority. They sometimes will even adjust the way they cook their entrees according to your individual demand, as long as you know what you are talking about (i.e. cumin chicken is the best!). Their delivery service is usually on-time and free-of-error too. Their sushi is always fresh and good too! Even though their pricing can be a little high, their product is still much more affordable and better than Jackie's. read more

I have lived on the East Side for years and finally decided to stop in to try Yama Fuji last weekend. Although the outside looks rather dull and unassuming, the inside is very nice! Our waitress (I forget her name but she had dark hair and was working on a Friday night) was super helpful and attentive and truly provided some of the best service I've received anywhere. The food is DELICIOUS! I am vegan and ordered the tofu teriyaki entree, which came out sizzling on a cast iron platter. My boyfriend ordered the sweet potato roll which was by far some of the best sushi I've ever had! I can't forget to mention THE DRINKS! I ordered a Zombie which was delicious and the flavors were very well balanced. All of the prices on the menu were extremely reasonable, so I'm confused by other comments here regarding this place being expensive. I am definitely going to go back here, and often!! read more

This review is for the Chinese food and general service. We ordered delivery a couple weeks ago and ordered for pickup today, both through Yelp / Eat24. They have an extensive menu and we liked everything we have ordered. We like to order a bunch of things to sample and then pick at the leftovers for a few days. We have tried the chicken and mixed vegetables, orange chicken, general tso's chicken, beef and broccoli, and kung pao beef. The larges all came with plenty of steamed sticky rice. All of the food was great. The orange chicken has orange rinds in it! Very flavorful. You can also select the spice level. The mild is pretty mild but those who like spice can turn it up! We also got the egg rolls, and those were particularly delicious. They're very big and packed with veggies. They were very crispy too. Plus, Chinese food always means leftovers for us, and the entrees all came in reusable plastic containers. (At least, the largest did.) The service has been great too. The delivery was very prompt. When I picked up the order to go, the employees were extremely friendly. I also noticed that something was off on our online order. It was completely our fault (wrong sizes) but I asked if they might be able to adjust it. They ran straight back to the kitchen and changed the sizes. They also called the online ordering service and changed the order to increase to the appropriate prices. I offered to do it there right away, but they were extremely kind and insisted it was no trouble for them to help. We haven't dined in, but we plan to one of these days. Don't let the outside of the building fool you. Inside it's beautiful! The layout is nice. There's a good number of tables, a sushi bar, a liquor bar, and then an entire back room. The main area is a good size but the back banquet must be huge. They said they could accommodate up to 100 people. read more
