This has to be one of the worst experiences in my life eating or ordering sushi, the manager or owner was so rude, not only they gave us the wrong order, he got mad i did not wanted to buy what I originally ordered. I also receive from them an email with a $8 discount on my next order, not only they didn't honor it, again he got mad at me, started yelling at me and making me feel like I did something wrong. I would never recommend this place to anyone, not even to my enemies (I hope i dont have any, probably just the manager there) they are very cheap in giving you any kind of sauce. I have ordered from Yama Fuji so many times and I typically have no issues. but the most recent take-out order I got had a small piece of sharp metal in my food. I was so surprised because, like I said I've never had an issue. But now I feel grossed out and pretty concerned because if I wouldn't have realized it was in my food, I could have chipped a tooth by chewing it or worse I could have swallowed it! and who knows what health issues that could have caused. I stopped in at YamaFuji on Christmas day, because we all know that Chinese restaurants are the only ones that are open. I was pleasantly surprised to find that they had an authentic Chinese menu! They also have an American Asian menu too, but I'll let someone else review that. I had the chicken with roasted peppers and Sichuan peppercorns. Amazing flavors but the ratio of roasted peppers to chicken was a little much - the heat/spice wasn't an issue for me. Service was very attentive and friendly and made the experience enjoyable. This place dramatically improved my quality of life in Providence. When I have a crave to authentic Chinese food, I'd come here. Beats driving to Flushing... They have 2 menus and make sure you order from the Chinese menu if you want authentic dishes. I once made the mistake of ordering a takeout from the American menu cause I was in a hurry, the dish, I think was chicken with string beans, was so sweet that I wanted to spit it out after one bite. Yuk yuk yuk. I was stunned that my favorite restaurant would could also lower their standard this much to cater to the local taste... But, stay clear of the American menu, you're in for a treat. The Fuj deserves to be put in the high Asian food options in Providence. Sure it is new, sure it is "way" up there on North Main but once you step inside you will realize one thing, I will be coming back (that's not quite the movie quote is it?). So I have tasted the other offerings at Fuji from my GF however stick to that huge menu of sushi and you cannot go wrong. They have a wide variety of unique beverages as well. Holy moley if they put you in the backroom, be prepared to be amazed. You don't even realize the amount of space this restaurant has. The only complaint I have, and it isn't a large one but in the sushi rolls I noticed just about all the fish is fried/breaded. Came in around 3:30 for a late lunch. Waited at the front desk for 10 minutes while the entire staff was eating behind the wall. I was about to leave as they finally saw me. Service was meh. Was served hot tea in a coffee mug (think dennys). I was served my sushi on a huge platter, with no plate for me to actually eat off. I had to walk to the sushi bar to get one, I was never checked on. As I left, the entire staff was still eating. No thank you or goodbye. Food was meh. No care taken at all in the making of the rolls (falling apart as you pick them up). Everything tasted the same. I gave 2 stars because of its convenient location and how fast I got my food (which makes me wonder if they even make rolls to order, or just make a bunch ahead of time and cut them when needed). I'm a little spoiled by the quality Sichuan food in MA, and I was happy to here that a RI restaurant was offering a new Sichuan menu. We took out orders of braised fish, cumin lamb, chicken with chiles, spicy beef and tendon, and dan dan noodles. The fish and lamb were very good, very close to the high standards of Sichuan Gourmet, etc. The chicken was also good, and had more meat than the more familiar dish with tiny fried cubes of meat with a pound of chile pods. I imagine the tendon is a cold dish since I've had it at other restaurants, but maybe due to the packaging beside other hot dishes, it arrived warm, and was a little soft (borderline mushy), but tasty. The dan dan noodles were a little bland. The owners/counter people were very nice, and impressed that 3 middle aged caucasian men wanted authentic cuisine and the highest level of ma la. They wanted to make sure we wouldn't be angry if the food was too spicy. They said that there should be more specials in the future, especially for dining in. I will be back. read more

I ordered delivery: Sesame chicken, pad Thai, lo mein, crab rangoons and philly maki. The chicken was mediocre and the crab Rangoon's were good as was the sushi. However the pad Thai was probably the worst pad Thai I've ever had. The lo mein and the paid Thai were practically the same but the pad Thai had a side of lime. After what feels like years of trying to find a decent place in Providence (read: not greasy, Americanized crap), I am so so happy to have given Yama Fuji a shot. We ordered with a Groupon on a Sunday night and was surprised by how quickly take out would be ready - 10 minutes! I was skeptical at first but when my fiance arrived home with an array of tasty treats, we found that almost everything we ordered (the only item we weren't thrilled by was the miso soup; too salty) was out of control good. This is our new favorite place for Chinese takeout. We've had it several times and it has been delicious every time, with very fast service and delivery - the food arrives still hot. Our favorites are the General Tso's chicken (the medium-level spiciness is great), the sesame chicken, the beef fried rice, pork lo mein, beef with broccoli, and egg rolls. The General Tso's is always fried to the perfect level of crispiness, and the sauce is very flavorful, with a good consistency - not too thick or cornstarch-y! I'm curious to try the egg foo young at some point. The only downsides are the stale fortune cookies (maybe the ones we got a few times were just a fluke), and slightly high prices. The last time we ordered a large General Tso's (about 4 servings) and fried rice, it was $24 with tax/delivery. Not bad for "eating out" and having some leftovers, but still a little pricey for only 2 dishes. Ate here last night...mid-week on a Wednesday, and was delighted with everything! Food was fresh and flavorful. Cooked fast and perfectly as ordered. Presentation was wonderfully done; plate arrangement surprisingly upscale for a casual Asian eatery. Don't know whose knife skills were featured, but definitely have this chef often. Masterful job with the fruit and vegetables!! Waitstaff was congenial and helpful...attentive, but not intrusive. Really liked the booths on the restaurant side...spacious and clean. Spicy Maki Combo is great - A side of spicy mayo will cost you extra, which is really silly. Salmon Skin roll, is just raw salmon skin rather than deep fried like most places (It's very gross). The sushi seems fresh, and I always enjoy it. The Miso soup is good, a little too salty but not bad, the side salad that comes with it is just lettuce with a half of grape tomato. I have only gotten take out/delivery, and the woman working the front counter is always kind. Red curry soup is a no go and I haven't tried the entrée menu yet. As for sushi, it's good! The special rolls are way overpriced but regular rolls are delicious and priced between 5-8 bucks. I have tried to order a drink once while waiting for my sushi. I ordered a Whiskey Sour - the bartender asked me what goes into it, as she has never hear of it. She then made me a mixed drink from the menu that tasted that sugar and draino. We visited on New Year's Day and it was slow (it was also 2:30pm) the service was spot on - suggestions and good descriptions changed what we would have originally ordered. We sat at the sushi bar and enjoyed some very fresh, excellently prepared sushi and even brought home some take out. We will definitely be back. TLDR: Don't eat here. They get staples in your food and think that's just part of running a restaurant. My boyfriend and I ordered take-out from Yama Fuji. It was nothing remarkable, but tasty enough, except for the pork fried rice, which was very good. The problem came when I found a staple in my food. This made me angry, because one of us could have gotten extremely hurt or even died from swallowing that. I phoned Yama Fuji and spoke to the manager. I wanted him to comp the full meal, as this was an egregious health and safety violation. Instead he said that he needed me to come to the restaurant and show him the staple. I firmly told him I wasn't going to do that, but I would be happy to send him a photo. He then said he could not comp my full meal because I had eaten the other food. I explained to him that that shouldn't matter. This was not a case of an unsatisfied customer. This was a case of extreme negligence that could have resulted in bodily harm, and the least he could do was comp my meal. The conversation went in circles for a bit. He tried a lot of excuses: broken staplers get staples in the food; his staff never does what he asks. He even said that the restaurant business was hard, and he would go under if he comped every meal with a staple, which was very disturbing to me. I told him if he didn't comp my meal, I would report my experience and what he'd just told me to the appropriate govt agency. He ended up comping me the cost of food only, not any fees. I was done arguing so I accepted. In all that time, he never once said the words "I'm sorry." read more

The Pad Thai at Yama Fuji was sub-par at best. It was way under flavored, and the noodles were mushy. I didn't even finish what I put on my plate. I did appreciate, however, that they gave me the extra limes that I requested. The Chicken Satay was really thick, I'm used to it being a lot thinner, and was not served with a side of peanut sauce. It was also a bit over spiced and not cooked fully through. My cat had no complaints though, he happily ate the piece that I gave him. Now on to the good: The California Roll was good, and quite standard as far as California Rolls go. The Shrimp Tempura Roll was delicious. I would order from Yama Fuji again if I was in the mood for sushi, and would rate this restaurant a 4 had it not been for the other two items.
