I ordered 3 rolls, 2 different soups, 2 salads, and an appetizer. The 3 rolls, Philly, Spicy Tuna and a Special Phoenix roll as well as the 2 salads, crab salad and spicy kani salad, were a bit on the smaller side. The appetizer was also a small portion, just enough for 2 people. The soups were the only item that I felt was what I expected. Overall, the price is the average price of sushi around the area, but the portions are just slightly smaller, enough that if you order more than 2 rolls (and you constantly order sushi from different places like me), you would notice the different size. I wouldn't have mind the smaller portion of sushi, but the quality wasn't even that good. (My favorite was the Kani Salad, better quality then other places, but still a bit of a smaller portion, but price was ok for the portion). Just to give you an idea of what I mean by portion, (spent about $55-tip included) I was sharing this with my sister, and we were able to finish it all. I recently spent about the same amount at another sushi place, ordered several rolls, shared that with both my sister and my mom, and had enough leftovers to take for lunch the next day. read more

They have new owners. They've messed my order twice, but have been quick to correct it. Great tasty food. Affordable lunch specials. 3 rolls for $10.95. They do however charge extra for brown rice. 50 cents more per roll. read more

Yama Sushi is the only sushi place I ever go to in Lodi and I'm always pleased. The restaurant itself is clean and never loud. The employees are very friendly and they're very fast when it comes to getting the food to the table. The sushi is really good and very fresh, especially when ordering from the lunch special. It's so cheap! For $8.95 you can get miso soup, salad, and two rolls, and $10.95 for three rolls. Either selection can really fill you up.You really can't beat that price. Recently found out about this place since they had one of their delivery men drop off a menu at each apartment in my building. Decided to give them a shot last night and I was not impressed. Ordered the Yama Roll and the Summer Roll. The Yama Roll has yellowtail, tuna and salmon; a type of roll I'm all too familiar with as these are my favorite choices of fish when it comes to sushi. However, upon taking my first bite I could not ignore how fishy it tasted! I was immediately put off since the beautiful thing about these three choices of fish is how un-fishy they taste. I ended up determining that the yellowtail must have been bad or was on the border of turning bad and this was the culprit of the bad taste. I ended up picking off the salmon and tuna from the top of the roll (which tasted fine) and leaving the rest. The "Summer Roll" (which is snow crab spicy tuna, avacado, with salmon and tuna) was okay but smothered in sauce which was completely overpowering. I couldn't even finish these rolls. In addition, I ordered 2 slices of salmon sashimi and 2 slices of tuna sashimi. The salmon was great but the tuna was chewy and lackluster. Needless to say, I will not be ordering from them again. read more

I ate there on Friday with my friend, and was sick all weekend with severe stomach pain, cramps, and bloating. The water tasted foul. I ordered one tuna role which had a strange taste, one salmon role and and one Boston role which had avocado that was hard. I'm not sure what made me sick, weather the fish, water, or something else... I was such about 5 hours after eating there, So use caution!! read more

We order take out from Yama every couple of months and we've always had consistently good food and service. I admit we get fairly basic rolls, like eel, tuna and salmon so I can't comment on some of the fancier ones. They are always very nice and accommodating as we ask them to package the order by family member so when we get it everyone gets their own container, which is nice! We've always found the flavors very good and have never had any quality issues with the fish. The portions are slightly smaller compared to other places, but I'd rather have the rolls be a little smaller if it keeps the fish quality high. All in all a great place, and we enjoy ordering from Yama when it's time for sushi. read more

This is an excellent place to eat. Warm and welcoming. The place is very clean and food very fresh never tastes old. Had eaten there many times. Prices are reasonable and service is excellent and friendly. I live in NY and go to this place to eat. The potions are filling and it does have excellent flavor oppose to what the other review had stated that no flavor. It has excellent flavor and they accommodate you if you don't want certain things or to add extra things to your liking. read more

This place is AHHmazing. If you are not really a fan of sushi go in and try the phoenix rolls. Its not actually raw fish. Its shrimp tempura i think with a "sauce" that is creamy with a little kick but so darn delicious. Also try the seaweed salad. The food is decent (I'm obsessed with their avocado salad & ginger dressing .. their ginger dressing is the only one I actually enjoy. All other Japanese places taste WAY too ginger-y).. when they get the order right. Considering they're the only sushi place near my job that delivers, we don't have much of a choice but to order from Yama when we have a sushi craving. The customer service is one of the worst I've ever experienced .. on one occasion I had ordered the lunch special bento box, requesting an extra salad instead of the rice and they told me it was no problem over the phone .. perfect. Our order came & not only did they not include the salad but they forfeit the rice also. I called back to let them know about their mistake & the guy who answered the phone said "OK so next time you order we'll give you an extra salad." -.- I didn't want to make the delivery guy drive from 2 towns over just for a side salad so I didn't argue. THEN I go to open my box & find my cali roll DRENCHED in teriyaki sauce that spilled over from the chicken, the roll was totally falling apart & inedible. I call back again to let them know bc at this point I was mad and the guy actually had the nerve to say "OK can't you just eat it? What do you want me to do about it?" UM how about bring me a new roll & the salad that you guys forgot!@#$ RUDE. AWFUL. TAKE A LESSON IN CUSTOMER SERVICE! read more

This is the best kept secret in Bergen County! This place is really small; not much seating; I think most of their business is take-out. But we prefer to dine in, and I can tell you the food is so much better when you eat there. We always order the rocky shrimp and the tuna salad for appetizer. The tuna salad is just the spicy tuna served over a piece of lettuce. Ask for additional crunchies on top! Delicious. They are very accomodating, and will take any special requests. We always order the Red Dragon roll, and add avacado to it. The best! If you're going to dine in, remember it's mostly a take-out place. They don't have a lot of options for drinks which is fine with us, as we take our own wine. read more

Horrible service. I order the Udon stir fry and they send me the soup instead after almost an hour waiting for the order when i live literally down the street. I call to tell them about their mistake and tell them that i want my original order and they said that they can send it to me but to not eat the soup and they'll come exchange it which would be another hour wait. I tell them since they got my order wrong can we just keep the siup meanwhile we wait for the order. He said no and then i ask them what will they do with the soup, he didnt want to answer, who knows if they would give it to another poor unsuspecting customer. I could have spit in that soup and given it back to them and then they serve it to other people. I will never order from this place again!!! And be careful anyone who eats there bc you may just be eating recycled food. No attempt to make it right, way to build a loyal following!!! read more

I love this place. I always leave satisfied. the owners are good people, very polite, and will make the food the way you want it. the fish is always fresh, the sushi always taste good. I usually get a salad.. nothing special but the ginger sause sets it off, i cant get enough. I would recommend the green roll, shrimp tempura roll, sweet potato tempura roll. If you like fish the salmon and avocado and the spicy tuna rolls are good...and good for you lol. I really would recommend anything on the menu, i have yet to be disappointed with anything i have ordered. The prices arent to bad but you pay for what you get and what you get is good food every time. the dining room is small but it's no big deal i would recommend this place to anyone and every one who likes sushi. Ordered delivery a week or so after Hurricane Sandy - it was their first night back open after the storm so I was hoping the fish would be fresh. We ordered several rolls (volcano, pink lady, red dragon) and a kani and seaweed salad and none of it impressed me. The fish quality was ok but the rolls were just lacking in flavor. With so many other sushi options in the area it will definitely be awhile before we'll be back. read more

I recently ordered sunflower roll and lodi roll from this restaurant, they tasted so good. The sunflower roll is so special, it doesn't use rice, just used the spicy tuna with the crunch, topping with the salmon tuna and white fish. And lodi roll is unquie too. This is the best hole in the wall ever! My girlfriend and I were looking for another sushi place and I'm so happy we found it. It's only our second time here and my girlfriend is beyond obsessed...they even let her construct her own sushi roll. The restaurant is run by a husband and wife. The husband makes the sushi and the wife cooks..and man do they do it well! The sushi is fresh and amazing! I highly highly recommend the udon noodle dish...to die for! And the banana tempura dessert is awesome! And its byob...best. place. ever! read more

i must say that i really enjoyed this place. my wife and I love sushi and eat out at least once or twice a week. we are in garfield and always look for a place close to us. we saw the ratings on yelp and many people were dissapointed but we chose to try it anyway. we were pleasantly suprised. the place was empty but the sushi was really good. evevrything was fresh and nice size rolls. i always get the same thing every place i go. i get salmon avocado rolls, and these were really good. so good i ordered 5 of them. my wife also got the miso soup and another soup and loved both of them. they bothtasted great. my 7 year old son got 2 salmon tempura rolls and a crab roll.and he too loved it. all in all id say it was great. i came with low expectations but it far surpassed it. i will be going there all the time now. trust me its worth the money and the lunch specials are awesomely cheap... read more
