We just moved to Grassfield and tried this spot on a whim, and have been back almost every week. We have had takeout and dine in and tried tons of different rolls, and they are all consistently wonderful. We usually get spring rolls or dumplings on the house with a large or dine in order. Up to close on our new house and wanted to celebrate our to eat! We called so many places that haven't figured out an appropriate dining- in process. They just started yesterday and are doing a great job. Reservations only and 4 tables at a time only- 15-20 feet between customers. The staff was so cheerful and the sushi was amazing . The unexpected extras were fine! We will make this a regular spot once we move. Staff all wore masks, gloves, and offered hand sanitizer at the door. Won't comment on the food, but gonna go ahead and leave 1 Star (less if I could) for the service and takeout ordering tonight in Mother's Day. Currently sitting in parking lot waiting for my pickup order nearly 2 hours after order was placed online, with estimate pickup time an hour ago (40 minutes from ordering). Called while we sat in the parking lot at our original pickup time and were told they were running a half hour behind. Called after a half hour and told 15 mins. Went inside at about 30 mins from then and told they were getting it boxed up. That was 15 mins ago now. They are busy and backed up...I get it. But online ordering system needs to be adjusted to reflect realistic timelines. We would have chosen somewhere else had we known. Love the VB location but will never again come to this location on Cedar Road. read more

The ambiance in this place is absolutely awesome. I love coming here for both lunch and dinner. Definitely try the Yama salad and the steamed gyoza. The sushi is hit or miss. This is probably the best hole-in-the-wall sushi place I've been to! The chicken teriyaki was so good... the sauce was sweet and savory at the same time! The spicy California roll (what I ordered) was great too.... considering I'm a picky sushi eater... the salad dressing was one of the best dressings I've tasted! Our go to sushi spot! The staff are very friendly and we have not had one thing to complain about over the past 3 years. We usually order for pickup and do a date night at the house (babysitters are expensive these days!). Every one of their rolls feels like it has been given attention to detail and tastes phenomenal. I love every single Yama location in the Hampton Roads area because we are always treated with the best hospitality and the sushi is delicious. This location is across from TCC, and I highly recommend it for a lunch break because the lunch bento is quick and affordable. One thing I noticed that was different was that we weren't given cucumbers after ordering but more after the fact as an "on the house" large plate. It wasn't anything that I was upset about, but it was just different. Since I was there for lunch time, I ordered the lunch bento with candy cane roll (my fave) and the Philly roll, both sans rice. I love that Yama is accommodating to making rolls without rice because sushi rice tends to make me too full quickly. I didn't feel like it was a heavy meal, but it was very delicious. We ordered the gyoza, and house sashimi (salmon, white tuna, tuna). The gyoza (pan fried) was amazing, the sashimi was fresh and delicious. We both ordered bento boxes, mine with lover roll and the spicy tuna. The house delivered another roll - I can't remember which one, but the eel sauce was on point. They do no skimp on the fish here, and there's not a ton of mayo/sauce murdering the wonderful flavors of your fish. The spicy tuna didn't have a bunch of filler. We had a ton of leftovers. We had a total 8 rolls and everyone of them was amazing. We weren't crazy about the ginger salad but then we didn't come here for the salad, we came for the rolls. Plus they have my new favorite wine Dr. Loosen (discovered it shortly before departing California). It is clean, smooth, and sweet (but not too sweet) Riesling. First time getting sushi in VA. I was skeptical at first because being from California, it's hard to find sushi that compares. However, this place really surprised me. The interior is very elaborate and you can tell they took their time putting it together, I loved it. Our server, Alan, was super nice! We ordered and waited for our sushi. We were the only people there since it was Wednesday at 1:00. When we got our rolls, they gave us an Iron Man roll on the house! All the sushi was really good and fresh. I'm honestly surprised that this place is able to stay in business with the prices alone. We've given it a few chances but I just can't get being spending so much money and not having better service or more food for the cost. On my most recent visit, the server didn't even write down the order. She lost track of what we were saying after the third item and had to go get pen and paper. I'm glad she got pen and paper, I was a waitress for years and it's always better to write it down and get it right then to try and memorize it and look cool. We ordered a variety of items, they were delivered with a beautiful presentation and that was it. No one came by to refill our drinks, no one asked us how our food was, one of the rolls wasn't correct, but we didn't have a chance to tell anyone. It was very slow that night, so there didn't seem to be a reason to be ignored. So we left spending almost $100 (including tip) and very thirsty. Everyone was nice enough, but in the future I will choose a more affordable sushi option. QUICK REVIEW! INTRO: Yama Sushi Roll House is the latest of quite a few Sushi serving restaurants in the Great Bridge section of Chesapeake these days. THE GOOD: The interior of the restaurant itself is really nice, with cool decor. The staff was incredibly friendly, courteous, and generous. During my visit I was given a whole Yama Special roll on the house, and a complementary dessert as well. Really nice. THE NOT AS GOOD: Yama specializes mainly in the kind of special rolls that have a lot of stuff going on in them, especially stuff that causes them to be served warm. These rolls are pretty creative, and are served with a slick presentation. Now there are a lot of sushi fans out there that love this sort of thing, however me not so much. I find that I'm increasingly preferring simpler, more raw fare, which in my opinion Yama doesn't do quite as well. I got the Sushi Regular dinner, and the Nigiri peices tasted kind of watery, and slightly more rice than I'm used to underneath them. The regular spicy tuna roll was excellent though. Also, I found the dressing on the salad to be overly citrusy and the miso soup was sweeter than I'm used to having. This is admittedly nitpicky though. OVERALL: I think Yama will be a great place for a lot of people. Especially if you like Volcano roll type cooked offerings with lots extra toppings like mayo and eel sauce. This isn't me though, and if it weren't for the outstanding service, this would only be a 3 stars from me. read more

Possibly the best sushi in the area loved the food! Great service, a very friendly staff. They even gave us a complimentary candy cane roll it was delicious! Miso soup was on point. The lunch special was a great value while being very tasty. We of course had to add on a couple of speciality rolls to try. Flavorful and fatty just like I like it, the problem, once again, size. Tiny. Insulting. Yellowtail? Please don't get me started any more than I have. I had 2 experiences here. First one was lovely and the rolls were great. Went back and got sushi rolls called Superman, earthquake, and volcano. As a whole these rolls were not fresh. We ordered for a later time at 2 pm for pick up at 5 pm. My wife was there at 5 which was when the notification was sent it was ready. This rating is more for the food than the service. Went with my sister for lunch and we both got the two roll special. You choose two specialty rolls and it comes with a soup and a salad for $20.95. It's a pretty good deal. When our server came to take our drink orders he also brought us each a little sample serving of the seaweed salad on the house. It was pretty good. On top of my water and her Diet Coke we ordered the shrimp tempura appetizer and edamame to share. Both were large portions. The salad was huge as well and the miso soup, while tasteless, was probably 2 cups worth. The rolls were good. The ingredients tasted fresh. We shared all the rolls and a few of them tasted pretty similar which was kind of a downer. They have a list of nearly 30 specialty rolls but most of them have the same flavor profiles. Now onto the service. My sister and I do a sushi outting once every 3 or 4 months. We don't really have a specific place we like. We always order appetizers and several rolls to share. And we almost always have to take a box home which is fine because leftover sushi is pretty bomb too. I ordered two rolls(Jungle & Red something) and my sister ordered two(Candy Cane and General Booth) and we also ordered a volcano roll. We always order the volcano and I think we subconsciously base whether a place is good on how tasty their volcano roll is. The server, who was super nice and patient, suddenly says, "We usually suggest you only choose two rolls per person maximum. Do you want me to put the volcano to the side and only bring it out if you still want it when you're done with your other rolls." I said, "No, you can bring it out with the rest. We're going to put them all in the middle and share anyways and it's fine if we have leftovers." He brings us out a huge boat with all our rolls on it and then explains that there's a 6th roll they gave us for free. I'm not about to turn down free food but what?? Minutes earlier you tried to talk us out of ordering a 5th roll. It was confusing but we enjoyed the free Iron Man roll and had plenty of leftovers. Overall I would go here again. Each roll was 8 BIG pieces. I didn't try the sashimi/sushi which I normally would get but the rolls are definitely worthy of a visit. And they have a few specials running right now for their anniversary. read more
