Looking for a place to spend $25 on a variety of Japanese dishes, a lot of decent sushi and desserts that can fill up your stomach? This place may have your answer. One of the nearest Japanese restaurants to my place, I decided to come here with a friend. They have this dinner special for about $20, not including tax and tip, you can eat as many types of sushi that you want, as well as a variety of Japanese dishes. How you order is that they give a couple of pieces of paper, and you mark on the paper what you want and how much.
I remember ordering a bunch of sushi rolls, such as a Dragon Roll, a white tuna maki, spicy tuna maki, yellowtail maki, salmon and tuna handrolls. We also got various types of sashimi, such as salmon, tuna, bass and mackerel.
Sushi was decently good, it was definitely not great sushi but it was sufficiently tasty. The sashimi pieces were really small, I would say one piece is about the width and length of my thumb. I do not have big hands, so the sashimi pieces are small. I felt that they put a little too much rice in the makimono rolls and the handrolls. As for the fishes, they were fairly fresh, and just decently good. I would say that the sushi tastes a little better than the sushi that you would get from a typical American supermarket, but probably not as good as getting sushi from an actual and sophisticated Japanese restaurant with some of the finest sushi chefs. The wasabi that was provided was fairly strong, and the Gari was decently good. Soy sauce was satisfactory, but made the sushi tastier.
As for other Japanese dishes, I only ordered a Tempura dish, since I was focused on getting as much sushi as I could eat. This consisted of shrimp and vegetable tempura. I thought it was one of the worst tempura dishes I have eaten in Boston so far. They put in a lot of batter on the shrimp and vegetables, that I tasted more crispy batter than shrimp.
As for desserts, we got some ice cream. Fried ice cream is an extremely rare treat for me, because I have not had fried ice cream for months, maybe even years. I thought the fried ice cream was sweetly tasty and crispy, did not taste much cold ice cream, but I was glad to get it, because it is one of the few desserts that I rarely get.
Service was not great. We had to wait a while for the sushi. I guess that was because there was a lot of people, and I think the sushi chefs were overwhelmed. When there is a lot of people in a restaurant, usually the service gradually becomes lousy. As for the servers, they were nice enough to make sure we have enough glasses of water, but that is probably the only good part of the service. The servers just did not seem like they care. The only improvement suggestion I can provide is just have the servers be nicer, sincere, and genuine. Interior was decent looking. They have a TV, but they do not show the TV sports programs in high-definition.
Overall, this is not a bad choice to spend $25 so you can eat as many sushi as you want but do not expect any amazing dishes from this place. My friend and I actually enjoyed eating here. Sushi tends to be expensive in the USA in general, so if you are not looking for really good quality sushi, this is actually not a bad deal for what you are paying for, and if you do not mind less than mediocre service. This is probably not my top choice for sushi in the somewhat decent city of Boston, but maybe if I have $25, I do not really care for quality, and if I really want to get my stomach full, then it would be one of my top choices. read more
