I got one soya sauce packet and barely weak spicy sauce. There was tons of ginger and wasabi! Thank you! The yam roll was warm good. My friend and I were craving some sushi. She suggested this restaurant. Took a bit of searching but eventually we found it and had a great meal. Tons of what you would expect from a sushi restaurant. My only real downer from it is that special rolls were all priced the same at $12.50. Alas, plenty of other options for a cheap and filling meal. That aside, our meal was great. Portions were sized nicely overall and tasty. Their spicy chopped scallop rolls were a lot better than I expected. Not the overwhelming bit of spiciness that you would expect from spicy rolls. Loved their Crunch and Sakura rolls too. Standouts for me and would like to have them again. Enjoyed my meal very much here. However, I was extremely disappointed when my order arrived, and I only received one item instead of the promised two. This is false advertising and incredibly misleading. When I called to address the issue, the staff was unhelpful and dismissive, offering no resolution. The quality of the sushi was mediocre at best, making the whole experience even more frustrating. Good sushi at a price that cant be beat! I was downtown in Vancouver for a few days and needed to get my sushi fix in while I was here. I went to a few other places here and they were great but all very expensive. Just to get 12 pieces of maki would cost me over 40 and that's without any alcohol. I ran upon this little hole in the wall however and was quite surprised. Nice and clean and very good tasting food. I've been going to Yamato for years now, primarily due to their location, but also because of their prices. Very afforbable sushi here. I noticed that there has been a recent decline in the quality of their sushi (had some bones in my salmon sashimi) but it's still very fresh-tasting and the portions are quite generous. The restaurant itself is very tiny and does not make for a comfortable dining experience, so I usually stick with take-out. They make the best gomae I've ever had and I really like their bento box dinners when I'm in the mood for less traditional sushi offerings. She said it would take 20 minutes. I showed up in 20 minutes and ended up waiting for another 30, so what was supposed to be 20 minutes was actually almost an hour. I asked about it several times. Meanwhile Door Dash people were coming and going. When I finally got my order and took it home everything that was supposed to be hot was cold. It had obviously been left sitting around. Also, the spring rolls were missing. I called the manager to complain and she gave me a credit for the yams. The teriyaki chicken was good after I reheated it. The agdashi tofu was bland and soggy. Wow this place is cute. I stumbled in here on a Sunday evening based on their yelp reviews and stellar prices and I was pleasantly surprised. There was almost a line out the door (the place is tiny!) but when I asked for a seat there was plenty of room, seems like they do a handful of Togo orders. I sat at the counter facing the street. There was also a sushi bar, making this place perfect for parties of small numbers. Menu is a place mat in front of you. Take it away from here. All of the rolls looked amazing but my small wallet pinched for one of the specials. Special E was a tuna, salmon, avo, and cucumber roll. I also got miso soup a small salad and green tea. All for around $10. You cannot beat this. The fish was decent. I can't say it was the freshest fish I had ever had but I ended up picking apart the salmon roll to put In the avo roll - creativity! I often go for the sushi combo A which includes miso soup, tuna maki, california roll and yam tempura roll which puts you at $10 and is quite filling. The tempura is good too, nice light batter. While I no longer live 3000+ miles from Vancouver and it's now just a 2.5 hour drive, I still wish Yamato was closer to me... like in the same country or... next door. We glutinously ordered over 30 pieces of sashimi and two special rolls (I'm sorry I can't remember their names, but they were good!). You definitely get a good bang for your buck here. Well in terms of satisfying your hunger for sure. The 5.95 deals for sushi, which I had, is a great deal. And the bento box deals looked great as well. When it comes down to the sushi it's okay. Definitely a good place. If I lived in the city I'm sure I would take advantage of the opportunity at cheap sushi now and then, but if you are visiting from out of town there are much better sushi places to check out, and even reasonably priced ones. I would recommend one that uses wild sockeye salmon. I had the combo B, with the BC Roll (salmon skin), yam roll, and salmon maki. The Yam roll was actually one of the best yam rolls I've had. The yams were mushed up and that contrasted with the crispy tempura bits nicely. Typically the yam rolls I've had in the past use chunks/slices. Ah, Yamato, it's always there for me when I need it. I've been coming here for years. Decent quality rolls and appies are ok as well. The price is actually very good compared to most places downtown. Most places that are cheap have poor quality, but this place is actually good. They are very quick on the phone if you order pickup, so just tell them what you want, give them the phone number, and hang up, because they are usually very busy. In the great land of cheap sushi that is Vancouver, paying under $10 for 20-odd pieces of sushi is common. Right near Yamato is Umeda, which gives you three rolls of your choice (from a selection of 30) and miso soup for $6.60 if you get takeout. Now, when you compare how limited Yamato's combo options are in light of this other one, that's several points docked right there. I must concede that the quality of their rolls is overall decent. The spicy tuna rolls were disappointing because they weren't spicy at all, but Bill's roll (yam and smoked salmon) was yummy. Altogether we paid $19 for 5 rolls.
