Hands down the worst dining experience I've ever had. As first time customers of Yan Peninsula, we came by on a busy Saturday evening at around 5:45 pm and was given an estimated wait time of 30 minutes. We got seated an hour later. Once we were seated, we ordered after flagging someone down and it took over 1 hour for all (three) of our dishes to hit the table. Almost every time we had to keep asking our waiter where our food was after we saw everyone else around us getting served. Once our main dishes (chicken & corn soup, noodles, and sweet and sour pork) got to the table, we began waiting for our rice which ended up taking forever -- to the point where we just cancelled the 2 orders of rice. Lastly, as a cherry on top, after we were told we wouldn't get charged for the rice, there it was on our bill. They also charge a 18% service fee (there was only two of us). We came at 5:45 pm and we didn't leave until 9 pm. Don't come here unless you want mediocre food and your time wasted. read more

Ambiance: 3 Service: 3 Food: 4.5 I have found a new dimsum spot around Bay Area. The typical xíu mai for every dimsum is very flavorful, moist, and light, as in not salty at all. The Chinese donut wrapped in rice noodle is still crispy despite being soaked in the sweet soy sauce for few minutes. The noodle itself is chewy and not fall apart when picked up by the chopsticks, which I really like. The generously and Perfectly spiced minced meat burst out from the fried taro ball. Truly lives up to the phrase "crispy on the outside but soft and warm in the inside". The lobster noodle is the highlight of the meal. I don't normally like E-fu as it can be soggy due to its soft texture. It is the opposite. The noodle is chewy and soft at the same time. The lobster is fresh judging from the chewy texture, not rubbery. The crispy vermicelli or rice noodle tastes has a nice crunch without the oily taste. Disappointed when there are not enough seafood or veggies topping included. The desserts here are a bit on sweeter side, especially the baked lava salted egg custard bun, tho the taste is great. The texture is chewy and soft. The custard is sweet + the sweet crust outside the bun are a bit over killed. If one likes sweet, this may be fine with them but not me. Hand down to lava custard sesame balls. They are my new favorite from thi restaurant. Crunchiness, crispiness, chewy, softness, sweet, saltiness, and moist can be tasted and felt in one bite. In contrast, I don't recommend mango pudding in shape of a corn. It doesn't taste like a milky pudding, more like soft jelly with not much of any mango taste to it. Overall, I highly recommend this restaurant with its light, not too oily offered brunch menu. I hope it can remain the same since lots of restaurants don't maintain the quality over time. Solid 2.5 star. This place seems pretty big but parkings were extremely limited, so expect to walk a few blocks. Overall, I thought their dim sum lacked flavors, tasted pretty bland (i personally prefer lighter sodium but this was to the extreme). Ex: the deep fried taro had no taro taste (may be the ingredients used were not the best) coupled with very light seasonings. So you were basically eating a mushy fried puff..yuck. Their porridge was also bland. On the other hand, I thought their shrimp dumplings were good, with bites of bamboo shoots. Lastly, look at their steamed buns. It was a pleasant surprise to find this hidden gem. The restaurant offers free parking and is clean and well-lit. The decor is modern. The chefs in the kitchen really know what they are doing. The knife skill on the Julienne green onion is the best I've seen in a while. Perhaps it is no big deal to others, but the slices of jalapeno are well-marinated swimming in the bowl of soy sauce is a simple joy. If you don't mind the big TV showing traditional Chinese karaoke songs, this is a must-try place for anyone who is looking for authentic Cantonese cuisine cooked by old-school chefs that pay attention to detail. read more

We love this restaurant . food and service are reliably good. but we went for a family birthday party tonite and there was an extremely loud church group - about 100 people - singing and reading scripture over the loudspeaker - we could not hear each other talk. Please Mr. Yan , close the rest of your restaurant when you have such a group. Or put speakers where the group is, not over our table. We got a number and waited, was quoted 30min (but it took longer). - Creamy Custard Buns : The bun that caught my attention and brought me of this dim sum restaurant. It was cute/interesting. The bun itself was soft and the custard was not very sweet. - Salted Egg Yolk Lava Black Buns : I love salted egg yolk lava buns, this one was ok. The bun was a little tougher than the custard ones. - Chicken Feet : Standard. - Home Made Daikon Cake : Friend and bf enjoyed it more than the other dishes as it was crispy on the outside. - Shrimp Rice Noodle Rolls w/ Chives : Standard. - Siu Mai : I really enjoy siu mai at dim sum places, this one was ok. - Chive and Shrimp Dumpling : The skin was not my favorite. - House Special Rainbow Color Dumplings : It wasn't what any of us expected. It was basically all shrimp dumplings (3 different shaped shrimp dumpling, siu mai with a shrimp on top, and one fun guo? (pork & peanut dumpling)) Service was fine. A little hard to flag people down sometimes as it was busy. Overall : Some items are cute for pictures, but overall not worth the wait. We're always on the hunt for great dim sum. We usually hit up Good Luck Dim Sum in SF but this time we wanted a nicer dining experience. We we're meeting people in the South Bay so I hit up Yelp for Dim Sum options and based on the reviews, Yan Peninsula was the obvious choice. They recently changed ownership and completed their soft opening. We made a reservation and were seated promptly. The dining room is large and nicely decorated. Service was friendly and reasonably attentive. The food was the real star of the show with the kitchen churning out fresh and high quality classic dishes with extra touches. Our favorites were the glutinous rice dumplings, XLB, pea shoots with gingko nuts and tofu skin. The baked BBQ pork buns had a nice crunchy top. The grilled (pan fried) shrimp and chive dumplings were also a hit. We will definitely be back! read more

Former Zen Peninsula. They have a soft opening so they may not have all items on the menu. Parking can be tough and I highly recommend on making a reservation. This by far is the best dim sum I've had in the Bay Area. The most memorable dishes are BBQ pork buns, fry fried string beans, and shu mai. Mango pancakes are also amazing. They are not mango literal pancakes it's mango hello with cut pieces of mango inside. So good! Cha shu buns are out of this world. I should have ordered 2 of these. We used to come here often for tea and also ordered takeout regularly, but this time was extremely disappointing. They charged an automatic 18% service fee, yet there was basically no service at all. We were seated at a dirty table that hadn't even been cleaned, with leftover tea from the previous guests and no fresh water or tea provided. Every time we needed something like forks, napkins, or a high chair, we had to get it ourselves. Even when we tried to call the staff, they often ignored us, and only responded after asking multiple times. It really feels like since they already add the service fee, they don't care about customer service anymore. Sadly, after this experience, I don't think I will come back again. read more

I was excited for a new dim sum spot but sadly this one left a lot to be desired. We went early around 10:30am on a Sunday. It's a pretty big restaurant and nicely decorated with a good amount of seating. Parking - Parking for this spot is tough with only a few spots considering how large the restaurant is. Exiting the restaurant, be careful! So many cars got scraped trying to leave through the side entrance. If you can't get a spot in the lot, there's street parking so good luck finding a spot. Service - Sadly service is why I rated this place so low. When we arrived half of the restaurant was filled with large tables but there was only 3 servers to ever be seen. The whole room at one point was just sitting, waiting and trying to see if anyone could take our orders. I know they're new so maybe they're short staffed but everything was so hectic and even the servers seemed confused. It's all order off of a menu too, but nobody really came to take our order until we flagged someone down. Food - overall the food wasn't bad and the portions were big. But everything was bland and when we asked for soy sauce and chili oil, they forgot until about the 3rd time I asked. By that point we were done eating basically. The menu was also really confusing. I had seen reviews stating that before I went and I understood why when I got there. There's a lot of repeated/similar items and I wasn't sure what I was ordering. Roasted Duck - good plum sauce, but duck was really greasy and mostly bones. Salt and Pepper Tofu - not bad, but needed salt. It was really bland. Beef Chow Fun (Dry) - good wok flavor. Pea Sprouts with Garlic - standard dim sum veggie, it was tasty. Salted Fish and Chicken Fried Rice - had basically no salted fish in it, which was really sad. Overall bland but the portion was huge. Baked BBQ Pork Bun - I think this was the best thing we ate here. Creamy Custard Bun - super cute, loved the cartoon on it but again was missing flavor. There is an automatic 18% gratuity, which we were fine with. I'm not sure if it's for all tables but we were a party of 4. The issue comes when we order to go and everything was added to the same bill. Our dine in bill for a party of 4 was maybe 70$+ 18% gratuity, which we were happy to pay. With the addition of the Togo order our 18% gratuity would've been $42 (we ordered quite a bit to take home). We brought it to the attention to the staff at front and they said there was nothing they could do. That we should've told them we wanted it on a separate bill. So tell them you want it on a separate bill if you want to order to go. read more

Came for dim sum on a Sunday morning at about 10:30 and there were lots of tables open. There were 4 of us, 3 adults and a 3 year old. The menu is pretty extensive, but we pretty much decided what to order without too much wasted time as we had to be somewhere at noon. It took quite awhile to flag down someone to take the order form so the kitchen could prepare our choices. With the little one, we had to order items we thought she would eat since she's a rather picky eater. We wanted to make sure she got some nourishment from the meal. We ordered both the shrimp dumplings and the seafood dumplings, steamed black bean spareribs, tofu skins, chicken feet with black bean (for me), daikon cake, baked salted egg yolk lava buns, and, for a healthy addition, the chicken herb soup, which was on their specials of the day menu. While all the food was pretty good and the dumplings were plump and juicy, I was very disturbed and unhappy about the chicken herb soup. When I first tasted it, I thought I detected alcohol in the soup, but my dining companion thought that would be impossible. The baby's mom enticed the baby to drink about a cup of the soup, thinking it would be at least some nourishment since she refused to eat most of the dim sum. After I had a few more spoons full and felt for sure there was alcohol, we called the waiter over to inquire. He called one of the managers over and the manager confirmed that the soup did, indeed, contain alcohol. I was livid! Why on earth would it not be disclosed on the menu or by the staff? When they brought the soup, they brought four bowls and spoons, so they intended for the baby to have some. Why would they not say there was alcohol in it? And the alcohol, to me, a non-drinker, seemed strong. The other two adults thought it was the taste of the herbs initially, but then confirmed there was a taste of alcohol. One of the adults is abstaining from alcohol for medical reasons, so this was unacceptable. Very upsetting experience. Not happy with the service or the non-disclosure. read more

Decent spot for dim sum in Millbrae. Yan Peninsula has a dedicated parking lot, which is nice. Their dim sum items are all pretty tasty, and they're known for their salty egg-yolk fish skins. The weird part of our experience was when they tried to sell us on a prepaid package. I didn't get all the details, but it was something along the lines of "if you prepay $x amount today, you get a slight discount and can use the voucher/credits the next time you dine at Yan," basically like buying a slightly discounted gift card. They kept telling us we had to pay today to get the discount, and it felt a bit scammy. We ultimately opted not to do it, and the entire experience was weird. That aside, food was tasty, and Yan Peninsula has a decent selection of fresh seafood. read more

Food still tastes good but the service was really off. I came with my parents for lunch around noon. My dad had a question before ordering about a dish if they could make it more dry but instead of answering a simple no, the waiter looked at my dad like he was unreasonable. Then after a couple of dishes came we were finished eating but still missing 2 items. I noticed that the other table who order after us received one of the items we ordered ahead of them. We asked a staff member they replied it's steaming it will come out soon, or that they will check. We told the waiter after waiting longer we wanted to cancel the two items didn't want to wait any longer. The photos of food and interiors led me to believe my cousin picked a good spot for my uncle's 70th birthday. However, as the real time experience played out, it was quite the contrary in every way, and rest assured I'll never return here again. The parking lot is reminiscent of pretty much any Asian market- tight spaces, bad parking and a high risk to get your car dinged. Luckily, we got an end spot. Enter the restaurant and the patterned carpeted ramp once brightly colored is now black and even somewhat sticky. - not exactly an appetizing sight either... My cousin got a package which is typical for big parties: Appetizer, soup, various entrees, long life noodles and dessert We were initially supposed to be seated by the stage, but they shoved all of us- approximately 50 in the corner along the wall with folding screens separating us from the main dining area where an association dinner of some sort with live music was occurring. It wasn't too bad. The appetizer of cold jellyfish, seaweed salad, BBQ pork and vegetarian tofu roulette appeared on a plate adorned with a red flower. It looked like a prelude of possible excellence to come despite the bland flavors. However, I couldn't be more wrong. Pretty much every dish thereafter left more to be desired and the waiter trying to rush us by bringing dishes out every few minutes was annoying to all of us. My uncle joked about it. The waiter in good humor replied that was not his intent, but the entire meal continued on this way to finish. The crab and fish maw soup couldn't have been more bland and loaded with corn starch. The honey walnut prawns were actually good- not too sweet. Shrimp was cooked perfectly and a perfect nuance of flavors with the walnuts. The sautéed chicken with cashews, squid and snap peas was okay but dull like every other dish that followed. Beijing duck was presented on a plate- bland as can be including the skin with little meat. The taco shaped buns were not very fresh. They threw a tiny dipping dish portioned for one person full of plum sauce on top of a meager portion of ribboned green onions haphazzardly. The braised abalone with mushrooms and greens was sad. The abalone was canned or old. It had the texture of perhaps a rubber tire and no taste. The greens and mushrooms were at best average. Both the lobster and steamed fish were undercooked. I can make better steamed fish than this! Where was the crispy garlic and ginger with hot oil on top?? The long life noodles arrived basically cooked. There was a trace of salt but overall what was the point? Someone took them home and joked they would make lobster noodles with them. Flavorless noodles with undercooked lobster, and there's some potential. At the end, they served a sweet bean soup dessert I decided not to try. The little white bun with sweet custard arrived warm but nothing to rave about. The bussers came to remove dishes and placed the dirty dish plastic basin on a chair where wet residue of who-knows-what was left on the seat. Fortunately, we saw it and no one sat there after. Overall, this place needs a face lift and their interiors refined. The carpet has seen better days, and the front entrance just seems full of clutter at the kiosk. They have an awesome stage for performances, but the food here doesn't permeate aromas of flavors that should make your mouth water and want more. Yan's is a hard pass. I'd throw a big party and eat elsewhere. The food is some of the blandest Cantonese style cuisine I've ever indulged in. There are so many missing ingredients and obviously the chef and cooks are not passionate about the dishes being presented. read more

I wanted to try a new dim sum place and this one popped up on yelp. Whenever I get dim sum it's always the same order: black bean pork spareribs, har gau, siu mai, chicken feet, deep fried meat dumplings, and some kind of lava bun. So I feel I have certain expectations when I order these items from a new place and they delivered! Everything tasted really good and lived up to my expectations for a good dim sum place in the bay. Granted the service wasn't the best but that's what makes a dim sum place good right? They took a while to get our order out and would make eye contact and acknowledge us but not come by. Came here primarily for the king crab for dinner. The minimum crab size they had was 14lbs so definitely come with a group. It's also $39.99/lb. The brought the HUGE crab to the table to show us before cooking it. The water was dripping from the crab to the carpet. Makes me wonder how sanitary this restaurant is... They cooked the crab 3 ways - steamed, fried and in rice. All were really good. The crab was super meaty. We also had plenty left over since we ordered other food as well. Other food included soup, peking duck, chicken, green beans, and some other item. Pretty decent. Nothing to write home about though. Overall, good meal. Crab definitely drove the price up. read more

It was empty besides a few other tables, so parking wasn't bad. We ordered the Fried Noodles and Crispy Pork. The dishes weren't bad, but nothing stood out too much. The fried noodles didn't have too much flavor, and the Crispy Pork was rarely crispy. When I first looked at pricing, I thought it was expensive, but the amount of food you get totally validates price. The dinner menu is pretty short but I'm excited to come back to try their dim sum. This rating is still in the works! The restaurant itself is very big and spacious. There's a tv screen in the dining area, with nice decoration throughout the room. This place is new so we decided to check it out while we were in the area over our normal dim sum place. The place was pretty packed so it was bustling with conversation and food going by. We came later in the day, rather than dealing with the early rush. The dim sum to me was standard. Nothing wowed me and I felt a few dishes were lacking in flavor. I was also disappointed the squab wasn't what we saw in the other Yelp pictures, so if you plan on ordering it for one of those reason, be prepared. I don't know if this is lack of consistency or simply because they were closing and we were just getting the last rounds of things. I did really like the corn shrimp dumplings though. The corn added a really nice sweetness which complemented the shrimp well. There were also peas in it as well. The bbq pork rolls were silky and smooth which was nice. I've had better meat to noodle ratios but this one wasn't bad. Squab was super crispy and was served with a seasoning and lemon. read more

Walked in at 1130a on Saturday and was seated immediately! The interiors and service are nicer / more polite than other dimsum restaurants. They have lots of cute presentations for their dishes Highlight - steamed tofu skin rolls with oyster sauce was so good. Slight crispy, super savory, and stuffed to the brim with a delicious filling. Baked bbq pork buns are nice and crisp and the filling actually has recognizable pieces of pork - we enjoyed these! House special steamed bun combo - a bit disappointing with not much flavor. The custard bun was our least favorite. The custard was too solid and lacked flavor. The salted yolk bun was really delicious though! Overall would definitely come back! Finally returned for dim sum and experienced a 30-minute wait on President's Day. The parking lot was full, so I parked on the street. The dim sum was served piping hot, a quality I appreciate about this restaurant. I particularly enjoyed the steamed custard bun, with its delicious combination of creamy and gooey custard that wasn't overly sweet. Another highlight was the fried milk. The vegetarian fried egg roll was surprisingly delicious with a satisfying crunch throughout. I would recommend skipping the Ma La Gao, as its flavor lacks the richness of brown sugar- tastes like a regular sweet bun. We ordered the house special shrimp siu mai, but I didn't notice anything special compared to a regular siu mai. However, the service left a lot to be desired. We finished our meal but was missing one dim sum item, so we asked if we could cancel the order. The first server agreed and said he would check with the kitchen. Had to wave down multiple servers to get our bill. When settling the bill with another server, we informed him about canceling the undelivered item. To our surprise, he brought over the dish, poured soy sauce over the HK style fried dough noodle rolls and essentially insisted that we take it. Fortunately, the server I spoke to earlier was in the area and I called him over to intervened. He instructed the server to return the dish to the kitchen. While the food is good, it's important to note that the service experience can be quite disappointing. read more

We came here over the weekend for a friend's celebration event, in which they reserved half the restaurant. The restaurant interior was surprisingly spacious and could host quite a few parties. Our first impression upon entering was how pretty the ceiling was, and how aesthetically lovely the chandeliers they have up were. All of the food that came out was delicious, and the kitchen was pretty consistent in pushing out the dishes at a good pace throughout the dining experience. Only minor gripe was that during the first half of our meal, we had trouble getting the servers to refill our table's teapot with hot water. They would bring out new dishes, but somehow just ignore the teapot with an upturned lid every time, unless we asked them. Thankfully this got better on the later part of our meal, and they started consistently swinging by to periodically refill our pots. read more

My family and I came to try Yan Peninsula during their soft opening (which imo was very subtly advertised). There were a lot of improvements that could have been made with the dining experience in general. For starters, we were given paper menus written in Chinese. Not an issue for me, because my parents were able to translate and help me order. However, I can see this being an issue for non-Chinese readers/speakers. A lot of menu items weren't available, granted it was still a soft opening. Additionally, service wasn't the most efficient. We got our dishes very slowly, and my parents had to flag a waiter several times to remind them of a missing order. Otherwise, the food was spectacular. We ordered a shrimp and broccoli dish, char siu Chilean sea bass, braised fish head clay pot, garlic pea shoots, house special soup. A lot of Chinese restaurants my parents and I have visited in the Bay Area do a poor job of "dish segregation." That is, because they reuse a few of the same sauces in all their menu items, every plate ends up tasting the same. At Yan Peninsula, I was able to appreciate the uniqueness of every menu item our family ordered. Each dish was rich in flavor... not too oily or heavy, either! The food made it seem like we were dining at a Michelin-star restaurant. I would honestly wait until Yan Peninsula settles after its soft opening before coming back for a more enjoyable dining experience. But overall, this restaurant has become a new favorite spot for Chinese cuisine in the Bay Area. read more

Decided to give this place another try but unfortunately, was still left disappointed. The stir fry foods were good and arrived first. The dim sum look a bit longer to come out. We waited about 30-40 minutes for our dim sum dishes to come out. Unfortunately, the siu mai and the shrimp dumplings were over steamed so it came out pretty wet and soggy. The mango pudding in the shape of a corn barely had any mango pudding flavor :( (it was previously the best mango pudding I ever had) The most upsetting part about this visit was the egg yolk lava fried sesame balls with almond slices. This dish took the longest to come out and when it did come out, I noticed that there weren't any almond slices! I only ordered this dish because I love almond crusted dim sum dishes so I was extremely disappointed. I asked the dim sum servers if they gave us the wrong thing and they said they don't know, it's probably like that with the almonds inside. I poked a hole inside and didn't see any almond slices :( I asked the manager who said they gave us the correct order. I politely asked if they have another version with the almond slices and they said no and offered to cancel the order from our bill. When we got boxes to pack our leftovers, we packed the sesame balls as well because they never removed it from our table and since we touched it, I thought we would pack it for someone else who may enjoy that. Unfortunately, the manager who removed the dish from our bill snapped at me asking why I was packing the sesame balls when I said I didn't want the dish. She angrily picked up the dish and threw it away!! I thought it was extremely poor practice and left an incredibly bad taste in my mouth. Knowing that she would rather throw away food than for me to give it away to someone. I definitely get why she would be confused as to why I was still packing the dish when I said I didn't want it, but she should've taken it away when it was canceled from our bill. They had a very bad attitude towards the customers. On Mother's Day morning, we went out to eat. After finishing our meal and getting the bill, we noticed a mandatory 20% tip was added. I asked a staff member who looked like a supervisor. She seemed very unhappy and coldly told me it was because Mother's Day is a holiday, so the 20% tip is mandatory. Whether this fee is reasonable or not is another issue, but I felt that if she had patiently explained it to me, I wouldn't have been upset. What made me angry was her attitude--very indifferent and cold, as if she couldn't wait to get rid of the customer. The taste of food is important, the price being reasonable is important, and the environment being elegant is important, but I think the most important thing is how you treat your customers. P.S. I just read some of other customers' reviews. It turns out that they usually add a 18% mandatory tip to every table's bill! I don't think this makes sense. Customer pay tips based on the services the restaurant provides. You can't force people to pay a 18% tip! This is against the law! I don't think I will come back. read more

Came here early morning, was a bit drafty in the area, upon entry i smelled the restroom, but at least it was far from the dining area. Service was constant, so pretty decent. Food was great and big portions. There were plenty of food selections on the menu. There were absolutely no problems with flagging down waiter or waitress. I was here on xmas eve morning and at 9am there were no line and not a lot of people. It was nice to wake early and have a brucnh place to go to. The congee pot was really big and fit for a family of at least 3-5 people. Plenty of foods and decent cost. read more

I usually don't write reviews, but I have to warn people about this place. We had dinner here last week. Food was good, but be aware of illegal charges. They had a promotion if ordering more than $200 at dinner, will get one order of the steam chicken for free. When we received the bill, we found out they charged service fees already and the service fees were calculated on the before promotion price. We asked why it's not after the discount, they said this is the way they do it (with a bad attitude). It's only a few dollars so we just let it go, but when I got home, I found out that the taxes were calculated using the amount before promotion and also including the service charges! Why would our service charges be taxed?! This is SO WRONG! We aware when you pay. We will not go back anymore. read more
