Yummy Chinese food in Chinatown. Saw all the reviews on google and decided to stop by while in Chinatown. Everything we had was delicious. For appetizer we ordered the shrimp toast and it was so delicious, perfectly crispy and the shrimp filling was so tasty! We also ordered the chicken fried rice and sliced chicken with hot spicy garlic sauce and it was so good I would definitely recommend this restaurant if in the area and in the mood for some good Chinese. I will be back when I'm LA again!!! read more

Decided to try this restaurant for dinner with friends tonight. We were lucky to get seated right away for our large party of 8 because they seemed packed. We ordered lots of food and overall it was ok but I'm not sure it measured up to the high expectations we had going in. The shrimp fried rice was yummy. And I was surprised by the sweet and sour pork. Although the crispy duck appeared overly well done, it was not as dry as it looked and was actually pretty tasty. Service was great! read more

Came here twice so far with my partner. He's been loyal to this place for the longest. Keep in mind that standards here are a lot different for Chinese restaurants. Service here is very polite for those standards! The slippery shrimp is definitely a must order dish here. Portions are huge and meant to share. Their fried rice is pretty good and we were well taken care of. read more

Family style Chinese food in an elegant setting in the middle of LA Chinatown's hustle & bustle. 5 of us went for lunch on a Sunday afternoon before a local outdoor concert at LA State Historic Park. A gentleman held the door open for us and another gentleman promptly seated us within 30 seconds. Immediate highlights included the celebrity photo wall, and the nice interior decor which was a blend of rustic elegant. To keep things easy, my group ordered 4 items family style to share among everyone. First up was Egg flower soup, which was nicely poured and delivered a hot, umami taste without being excessively thick. Then the main entrees arrived around 15 minutes later. Szechuan (Orange) Chicken - Nice crispness and sweet flavor with a hint of spice. Chicken pieces were a little too small and crispy for my liking, but the rest of the group LOVED it! Vegetable Fried Rice - Excellent! Plenty of veggies and egg while having a lighter flavor, which can be supplemented with soy sauce or their homemade chile sauce Shrimp Lo Mein - Excellent! Generous portions of shrimp while having a good taste without overbearing MSG or sauce flavors. Center rotating platform is a great touch and made our family style meal very easy to share. Service was great as well, waters were refilled promptly and we were checked on multiple times throughout our meal. Yang Chow delivered a delicious, timely, and CLEAN lunch for my friends and I! This is a slice of heaven Chinese style! Back when I lived out here in LA it was ritual to eat here before a Dodgers game. Following the tradition we had lunch here today and it was amazing. The service is the best and the spot is a small and mighty restaurant with cool decor of famous peeps who have come here over the years. Take advantage of the valet parking they have specifically for patrons of this establishment as parking is hard to come by in Chinatown. We had egg drop soup with fried noodles and sizzling rice soup with pan fried pork wontons to start. Then Sezhuan chicken, house special noodles and shrimp fried rice. Best on the planet and definitely hit the spot! read more

Please be aware that If you order take out, it won't be fresh. After tasting my entree I was Appalled and immediately called to complain about the quality of the Food. Worst server ever and rude. Ask if the food can make it mild spicy and hr said no. Instrad hr het mad and did not want to serve us after waiting for so long. Ask the manager, but the manager doesn't want to admit he is the manager . Even the manager knew he ( the server give a middle finger to customer. Maybe the server worked very long timebthen they should passed the very basic training customer service. read more

Warning: they do not take Apple Pay! I rarely keep a credit card on me anymore, so had to run to an ATM and pay cash...very inconvenient for customers, so I hope they start soon and stop being so cheap:/ Such great traditional American Chinese food. White linen covered tables, hot tea served on the spot, close range seats, and very clean, exactly what I love about Chinese banquet halls. The service is quick Order: Slippery Chicken, spring rolls and Beef fried rice. The spring rolls left something to be desired, but boy did I enjoy the fried rice and Slippery chicken. Honestly, it was the rice for me. If I come back, I'll definitely order again and definitely with that tender beef. I would try the Szechwan Chicken (orange chicken) instead next time. And the green beans looked amazing with the next table over ordered them. Go and enjoy! read more

The first thing I saw on the wall was a picture of a favorite actor of mine, Cary-Hiroyuki Tagawa. And any restaurant that is good enough for Cary must be a place that serves outstanding food! And we were not disappointed... The place is not that big and feels a little tight, but the arrangement is so that it fit the customers well and allowed staff to move around the place. And the staff is in a class of their own...very responsive and always ever present to your needs. Their friendliness brings custom to the place... The food tasted so good! We ordered Mongolian Beef, Slippery Shrimp, Steamed Fish Fillet, and Yang Chow Fried Rice. Everything was great! The servings were big and by the time we finished off our food, we were so full. Fire! Ordered the 3 musketeers lo mein, cashew chicken, kung pao beef, and slippery shrimp. Honestly--some of the best Chinese food I've ever eaten. All of the dishes were served quickly, nice and hot, and seasoned so deliciously. Really good service! Everyone that worked there was super friendly and helpful. Nice ambiance inside too. If you like Americanized Chinese food, this is your place!! Globalization might be the reason but there's more authentic cuisines from all over the world these days. But if you grew up or somehow acquired the taste of good old Chinatown Kung Pao chicken or Beef broccoli, there aren't that many decent restaurants in this town that serve them at a great price now. Yang Chow is one of the few that I've recommended to friends visiting Chinatown and wanted that authentic Chinatown style food. And they always liked it. Fast service of course - it's a good old trade mark of well-run Chinese restaurants so this one is no exception. Small rooms and tables are pretty close together... but that is the old Chinatown ambiance. GREAT PORTION size - we ordered General Tseng's Chicken (中文名：國藩雞 - 沒聽過吧？！跟左宗堂雞蠻像的！), Snow peas with 3 Flavors (雪豆三鮮 - 有牛肉，蝦，和新鮮甘貝喔）and a large size Fish Porridge Soup （魚片湯）- I think it can feed 4 people. Parking in Chinatown is never easy but they have valet parking right next to their place. If you miss it, there's a large lot a few stores down on the same size of Broadway and there you can pay $6 for 90 minutes. read more

Came here for an early dinner around 5pm on a Saturday, and there was no wait. We got the Chinese baby cabbage with black mushrooms and the fish fillet with Chinese wine sauce. The dishes were surprisingly big, and the food was ready quickly. The Chinese cabbage and mushroom dish was solid and not too salty. The fish fillet was soft. This was our first time trying this restaurant after hearing so many great reviews and even seeing it pop up on TikTok. As soon as we walked in, we were warmly greeted and quickly seated. The food came out faster than expected, which was a pleasant surprise. As for the food--it was good overall, though I have to say I've had better shrimp fried rice elsewhere. One thing I appreciated was how clean the restaurant was, including the restroom, which not only looked spotless but also smelled fresh. The one thing about this place that I always love is their huge selection of options and it's categorize so easily so that it makes ordering seamless! The staples I get when I come here is the shrimp plate, the eggplant, the green beans, and the beef dish with the green peas! This will always be a classic Chinese spot. Street parking was available for pickup. I called to order moo shu chicken wraps and wonton soup. By the time I finished a restroom stop, my order was ready. It is a cute spot. My order was ready in less than 15 minutes and we loved it. Thank you to this hidden gem for the comfort it brings. Yang Chow is definitely worth the hype! There was a long line outside when we arrived, but my party of two was seated within minutes after adding our name to the waiting list. We ordered the slippery shrimp and a vegetable dish with asparagus and beans, and both were absolutely delicious. The portions were very generous, and the flavors were spot on--highly recommend! The service was impressively fast, and the staff was super attentive despite how busy they were. Very clean as well. I had no idea how popular and longstanding the reputation of this restaurant was! It may not look like much from the outside and seem a bit dated inside but service was great and the food was delicious! Order the SLIPPERY SHRIMP -- definitely worth it. I was in the area getting a car serviced and was very hungry while waiting for the vehicle to be done. I found this place was a 3 minute walk around the corner with a ton of reviews so I thought "why not?" I don't have many Chinese food places that I love but would easily come back to Yang Chow. Came here 2 days in a row! This place is solid! We came to celebrate my daughter's birthday and ordered Slippery Shrimp, Lettuce Wraps (2 orders), Hot and Sour Soup, Moo Shu Pork, Mongolian Beef, and String Beans with Minced Pork (no spice). The Slippery Shrimp was excellent-fried perfectly and slathered in the yummy sauce but still had the perfect amount of crunch. The beans were seasoned well. The Hot and Sour Soup had a good amount of spice and peppered generously. Service was great! The waiter came by frequently to refill our water (which was awesome since some of the dishes were a tad salty...maybe it was the MSG). We came on a Sunday night at around 5:30 and found free street parking on Alpine. The day before, I came for lunch and was fortunate enough to find metered parking on Alpine too. There was only a 10 minute wait for our dinner but by the time we left at 8:00ish, I think there were at least 10-15 parties waiting for a table. read more

Ok sooo I guess this place is known because a lot of celebrities have been there in the past. We went there with my family and we got the orange chicken, lo mein and fried fish filet. Honestly it bad. The chicken wasn't good and the lo mein looked old. My kid ate it but afterwards my stomach was in knots. Again, I guess this place is only known for the slippery shrimp. I think I've been coming here for a very, very long time--probably for about 20 years! I used to come here quite often back then. At some point, though, I stopped coming as much because the parking situation in this shopping center became so busy and chaotic that it was difficult to even get in from the entrance. Also, the last time I came here, maybe two years ago, the valet parking attendant was so rude that I didn't really feel like coming back. This time, since we were already in the area for the spa, we decided to stop by again. Back when I first started coming here, it was just a very small noodle restaurant. One thing they've kept all these years--and what I think is such a great touch--is that they still serve yeolmu kimchi and kkom-bori-bap (barley rice) as a complimentary side. The restaurant became incredibly popular over the years and eventually expanded into the neighboring space, so there are now many more tables than there used to be. Since it had been such a long time since my last visit, I noticed they had quite a few new menu items that weren't available before, including galbi-jjim (braised short ribs), samgyetang (Korean ginseng chicken soup), and galbi noodle soup. One of my brothers and I ordered the perilla oil makguksu each, and it was absolutely delicious! It had such a rich, nutty flavor from the perilla oil, and it was one of those dishes that makes you think about it again later. In the past, I would always order the clam kalguksu whenever I came here, but this time I decided to try something different. My other brother ordered the clam kalguksu, and my mom had the dolsot (Hot stone) bibimbap. I tried a spoonful of my mom's dolsot bibimbap because I really like bibimbap too, and it was delicious as well. In the past, the wait here used to be incredibly long. You had to write your name and phone number by hand at the entrance, and then a staff member would come outside and call your name when your table was ready. This time, the system was different. We were told to simply wait in line, and she would take our orders outside. She said the wait would only be about 5-10 minutes, and she was absolutely right. While we were waiting in line outside, she handed us menus, took our orders, and then seated us at our table. The food came out quickly, the service was very friendly, and everything we ordered was delicious. It turned out to be a very satisfying dinner. After coming back here again after such a long time, I completely understood why this place has been so popular for so many years. It was just as popular back then as it is now, and honestly, I can see why!

Lots of other side dishes and combos too if someone in your party doesn't want ramen. However, with the increases in prices, the fact that there's many other options in LT, and the fact that there are other Daikokuya locations, it's an alright LT option.

I'm completely baffled by all of the rave reviews! I love me some good Chinese food and was hoping, based on so many good reviews, that this place would be all it was cracked up to be. We were passing through Downtown LA and decided to do a quick search for the top local Chinese restaurants and this popped up on our phones, so we made a quick exit and gave it a try. When we arrived, there were a number of Asian people standing around outside, so we thought it would be a bit of a wait, and were prepared to move on else wear, do to limited time, but we actually got seated right away, although stuffed way in the back in front of an emergency exit. Needless to say, we were so excited to get in so quickly! After we were seated, I realized that there were zero Asians eating there! Not a single one! The only Asians were the employees. I had a bad feeling once I realized this, as it is a golden rule of mine to only eat ethnic food where the natives of culture/nationality eat. The food took forever to come out. The people next to us were there long before were even complaining about the wait and long waits in between dishes. We actually canceled the beef Scheszwan we ordered, as we were already finished with our other two dishes before it was even close to being served. Turns out, this huge restaurant only had two burners! Say what!? Asian food needs many high-range burners. Asians don't bake their stuff! They fry the heck out of things! Anyhow, We tried spicy garlic scallops which were perfectly cooked, as in they were not rubbery, but they were so bland. I could barely detect garlic and it was not spicy in the least bit. We also tried the twice cooked pork. It was just ok. Not much flavor and was something I could have easily whipped up at home in my sleep. I had to douse my food with soy sauce to give some flavor. Both had "red stars" next to them to indicate those were favorites. So glad I didn't order anything without a star! Such a huge dissapointment for the $16+ price tag per dish and the $5 parking we had to pay for. So bummed out. I totally see why not one single Asian was eating there and this place was jam packed too, but not with any Chinese folks. Not worth all the hype. The following needs to be noted: 1. This is Americanized Chinese Food. 2. I lived in Hong Kong and China for about 6 years (for work), so I know from real/authentic Chinese food. I've had the super fresh fish with the eye staring up at you, that eye which was just minutes before happily viewing you from the inside a grimy fish tank. I've pulled the heads off of fresh shrimp, with the brains and eyeballs squirting out. 3. I'm a big fan of ALL Asian cuisine (except for real/authentic Chinese food). I love this place. It is consistent and fresh and yummy. What I really love about this place is the wide variety of yummy greasy food - slippery shrimp (yes, they are heaven on earth, the Krispy Kreme of Chinese food), Kung Pao Chicken and Dumplings (close to the dim sum variety, but a little more on the crispy side) and an ice cold Tsing Dao. What more do you want or need in a "Chinese" restaurant? I give it only 4.5 stars because I am a fan of flat Chow Fun (they don't have flat noodles here) and the wine list is not great. But as I mentioned the beer is cold! I have been going to this place for years, it is the ultimate hang out on Christmas eve for all us Jews (my peeps were out in full force last night, and that is one of the beautiful things about living in LA). Excellent food and service. There are two locations of this establishment, one in Chinatown at Broadway and this one in Pasadena. I have visited both locations and the service and quality are the same: excellent. Each has a display of the many celebrities that have enjoyed a meal here - Dr Drew, Magic Johnson LL Cool J, Drew Barrymore, Live Schreiber to name a few. This is a very cozy casual no frills place with good variety. Very welcoming servers, they treat everyone like a part of their family. Excellent place for groups, family dinners or just lunch or dinner for 2. You can enjoy a cocktail with your meal. Food is fresh, service quick and you will leave satisfied! If they have the ingredients, they will make the accommodation. I was in the mood for shrimp the night I visited, and had a taste for one of their specials with chicken. They were happy to make it with shrimp - for small fee. And believe me, it was worth every penny! The portions are very generous. I could have shared my meal with my husband, but he wanted Chow Mein that night, so we got both and shared a taste. We left full and satisfied with a take away bag, enjoying the leftovers the following day for lunch. There is a small parking lot here, so you may have to park on the street during busy periods. This place is amazing! Just slipped in while walking around Chinatown, checked the best reviewed Chinese food place near where I was with my dad, and we went in and were promptly seated/helped. We ordered a couple dishes which were delicious and different. For instance, who has heard of slippery shrimp before?? Well, I asked what it was, AFTER my meal was over, and the waiter explained then asked if I would like a free sample. That's awesome service, above and beyond I think, especially because we had already paid. Anyway, the food was awesome, try the slippery shrimp, and enjoy the hot tea. Make sure you come hungry, though, because as typical Chinese food fare goes, the portions are enormous and you will have to take a doggy bag home. Food was absolutely delicious. This was my second time here. Ordered the slippery shrimp -- crispy fried shrimp in a sweet, tangy sauce. One of the most popular dishes here, according to our waiter. We got two individual side orders of rice. Just one entree, and 2 individuals orders of rice for Me and my GF. Couldn't finish it. In other words, their portions are VERY generous. Better than all other Chineese places I have been to. Slippery Shrimp is to die for. I hate that there is not one in San Diego. My sister loves the green beans - which a lot of places do not have. We also had pan-fried noodles with shrimp (yum yum, the sauce and infused oils in these noodles is delicious, plus the smoky flavor of the crisper - aka a little burned - noodles makes me lick my lips.) A friend of ours ordered the moo shu chicken. I looked great and said that it has the perfect blend of plummy sauce, thin pancake, and savory moo shu. We shared some sizzling rice soup - this soup is sooooo good. I happen to love rice that is crisp (like a grilled rice ball or the singed rice in the bowl of bi bim bop) and this soup combines a flavorful chicken broth with bamboo shoots, chicken, shrimp, and the earthy smoky flavor of charred rice! The restaurant is clean and comfortable and can be very crowded. Photos on the wall of famous people. The service good considering how busy they are. Awesome Chinese spot. Very different Chinese food than I'm used to getting. Still good nonetheless. First off the place is pretty lowkey from outside. The windows are blacked out and it seems sketch outside. But going in the place decked out and classic Chinese restaurant decor and images of famous celebrities. I got to try the slippery shrimp, the minced beef green beans, the rice paper soup, the soup dumplings, chicken crispy noodles, and another kungpao chicken dish I believe. A ton of food! Got all the Yelp favorites. The slippery shrimp was pretty good. Lived up to expectations. Sauce is thick and slimey. The green beans were fantastic. One of my favorites from the meal. The soup was fantastic! A must try. The mix of fried rice paper and hot soup just mixes well for some reason. Absolutely a must try. Everything else was fairly standard. The dumplings were surprisingly good. The crispy noodles and the chicken were forgettable and something you can get anywhere. So to sum it up, trust Yelp on this one. I finally made it to Yang Chow for a Saturday lunch, and I can happily say--it completely lives up to the hype! We were lucky to get seated pretty quickly, but right after we sat down, I noticed a waiting list starting to grow. This place definitely gets busy, and now I totally understand why. We started with the sizzling rice soup, which was such a fun and delicious surprise. The crispy rice added this unique, crunchy texture that I've never had in soup before. I actually checked YELP to see what would be a good place to eat. After checking the reviews on Yelp we decided to try Yang Chow. The restaurant was quite full and paired with the awesome yelp profile (400+ reviews and a strong 4 stars) I had my sights set pretty high. We shared the wonton soup really good. Pan fried noodles with chicken. Noodles were too mushy for my taste. They put way too much sauce on it. Spicy beef. The sauce on the spicy beef was great. the beef quality was not so good. oh and white tea. That was wonderful. When the tea and the soup steal the show, its a bad sign. Yang chow is a-ok chinese food. I dont think I'll return, but its fine for what its worth. Very touristy crowd. I have been to Yang Chow in the Valley numerous times. Last night was the first time I dropped by Yang Chow Chinatown.. Usually we start with the Shrimp Toast and Pan Fried Dumplings. Both were just so so. The Toast was just soggy and the Dumplings were overfried--just too bad. I thought that the main courses would be a little better but noooo, I was wrong again. Fish Fillet with Spicy Garlic had what seemed like a lot of vinegar. The flavor usually is a little sweet and spicy but I can't say what happened here. The House Special Shredded Beef usually has shredded mushrooms, beef, snow peas and carrots. How it came out tasted liked a cooked mess. Thank goodness the other main dishes were OK. I really felt sorry for the server as it seemed he had no idea what was going on or what to do to make it taste better. The Moo Shu Pork was really good as was the Diced Chicken with Cashew Nuts. Used to go to Chinese Restaurants in Los Angeles' Chinatown every time I had lunch with a Superior Court or Federal Judge--they chose and we were treated very very well. This was YEARS ago, when women were a novelty as civil litigators and bored judges liked a quick lunch with a perky chatterbox---their treat. Seems that was ruled unethical long ago/as were such lunches. Today it was a family of five affair, with relatively well behaved kids and classic basic foods to please the child pallet. But Beef/Broccoli Sauce and Chow Main with Spicey Green Beans was just the trick and everything was terrific. If only we hadn't looked at the photographs on the wall. No Judges. . . BUT. . .all the USC athletes and boosters. . .given the cost of a USC Education and the extra money to get rich kids accepted, you may not be able to afford to eat at Yang Chow. . . We have been going to yang chow for many years but no more. The rudest hostess! She is a piece of work! We waited and waited for our table inside the restaurant 2 feet from the hostess the whole time, for almost an hour. And when I asked her when we would get our table, she tells me she sent me a text 9 minutes ago. She wanted me to get back at the bottom of the waiting list! She told me she saw me the whole time waiting in front of her. When I asked her why she didn't call my name she said "I sent you a text"! She knew it was me in front of her the whole time and yet she didn't tell me. The text simply said head to the restaurant if you haven't already because you are close to the top of the list. We left because it was not worth it! We had always put up with her rudeness but this was not worth it. We will never go back! If I could give a zero star I would. There are a lot of legit Chinese restaurants in Chinatown, including Yang Chow - but why don't any of them deliver? I don't get it! BUT thankfully we live in 2015 - which means smartphone - few taps - Chinese food at your door. Most of the time, I use RushOrder app (try promo code HUNGRY3 not sure if its still valid tho) because I don't know any other apps that have Yang Chow. ANYWAY, on to the food: Sizzling Rice Soup is good if you're looking for some soup on a gloomy day. Usually I go with the kung pao chicken, orange chicken, and Spicy Hunan Beef (when i order with my friends). The sliced beef with snow peas is also good, i like their sauce. Crisp duck + any of the fried rice is also a very good combination. From the outside you might not want to walk in, but get in the doors and you have that classic Chinese restaurant feel with good decor and better food. Top it off with a server you can't really understand until you give your brain a chance to fill in the blanks of the riddle your lip reading and ears audibly attempted to translate on first go. We ended up splitting the Szechwaun (sp?) chicken, Beef with Scallions, and some egg rolls. We did not end up getting their house specialty - Slippery Shrimp - as friends I were with did not want Shrimp, and this is certainly reason to come back alone.
