With a very attentive staff, if you want great quality fish, this is the place to go in Azusa. Because they're so great and the smaller size of the restaurant, dining with a group is difficult, so get there very early. We arrived about 30 minutes after opening with 3 people in our party and had about a 20 minute wait. I've been going to Yashima since 1981. Sushi is ultra fresh. Reasonable prices and the staff is amazing.

A friend of mine treated me to lunch here the other day. She forewarned me that the food takes awhile to get but it will be good. Yup, it's true. We waited about 20 min before her bento lunch arrived and another 15 minutes before my order of 2 yellowtail +1 albacore sushi was served and then waited another 10 minutes for my 1 avocado roll. Overall the food was good, the service was friendly, and I am happy to support a local establishment. The wait times are lengthy so it's definitely not a grab a quick bite to eat place. read more

This restaurant was packed with a line on a Saturday evening, and we can see why it's so popular. Luckily for us, we came in between crowds so we had a short wait for a table for 2. You can park in the back and enter through the back door (see photo). Give your name and number in your party to the waitress and then have a seat in the hallway. I'm not very patient so if I saw the line was long I'd probably come back another day when it wasn't as busy, but that's just me. The 2-item dinner combination has great options to choose from. From the miso soup to the side salad with Asian style dressing, to the rice and entrees (I got the fried soft agedashi tofu and salmon teriyaki), everything was great, really hit the spot. Portion size was not huge but more than adequate and satisfying. As I mentioned it can get packed, so if you are still socially distancing, it would be better to get takeout. The waitress was very busy but did stop by to check on us, refill our water, etc. Restaurants that serve this type of variety and combination of Japanese food are getting harder to find, as more trendy and high volume places pop up. As a long-time local customer, I've always enjoyed the food here, which I'd rate an 8/10. However, my last two visits were disappointing due to incorrect orders, and I noticed the same two staff members were working both times. One short Japanese server, the youngest one out of group had always been rude. Worst customer service ever. The service has consistently been poor, earning a 1/10 from me. The atmosphere is fine--just another traditional, small sushi spot. We were served water promptly, but unfortunately, that was the only thing that went smoothly. After sitting down for 10 minutes, no one came to take our order, despite the fact that there were three waitresses and it's a small restaurant. Eventually, I went up to the cashier to place our order myself. Although I was frustrated, I remained understanding, having waited tables myself during my college years. We then waited an additional 30 minutes, which seemed unusually long. I approached one of the waitresses, who told me that they hadn't even started our order yet because they process orders on a first-come, first-served basis, and there were four takeout orders ahead of us. While I respect that every business has its own way of managing things, it would have been appreciated if they had informed us ahead of time that there would be a long wait. We could have decided if we were willing to wait under those circumstances. After waiting 40 minutes, I was understandably upset. Unfortunately, I never got to try the food, so I can't comment on its quality, but based on the service, I would rate my experience as 0 out of 10. To make matters worse, the waitress argued that it wasn't their fault because they were busy--yet I noticed that a party seated after us was already getting their food. This is my family's go-to Japanese spot for a late dinner. We love Yashima--the servers are beyond kind and attentive, plus the food is simple and satisfying. This is one of the few spots that make nabeyaki udon (which I feel is the only correct udon to order, in my opinion) which makes Yashima a go-to spot when the cravings hit. We came here on a whim after shopping at BevMo because last time I wanted to try, they were closed even though Yelp indicated they were open. This time they were open and we didn't need reservations, which was nice. They didn't have jumbo clams or surf clams which we really like. Still to this day out of every sushi restaurant I've ever been to (very very many) my favorite spot. As for stand outs: Chilean sea bass. This would even convert non fish eaters trust me. Albacore carpaccio. Any of their albacore in general is unbelievable and tender, but this is paired with the best sauce. Their udon is top level as well. To be honest it's the quality of fish that keeps me hooked though. Never fishy, always the right flavors per the different fish which means they are kept and handled properly. The staff is very sweet shout out to Sachi and everyone. Overall a hidden gem that is and always will be my go to spot. Note to newcomers. You can expect a wait at peak hours. I came here on a Saturday for dinner, about an hour before they closed, and I was pleasantly surprised that it wasn't too packed and that we were able to be seated quickly. They have a back in front entrance, though it looks like the back entrance is more commonly used. There's lots of parking in the back too. The service staff were all very friendly and very attentive. We got several rolls, nigiri, and tempura. I was really happy with all items that we got. The quality of fish seems really fresh and the tuna melts in your mouth. The tempura was really very well made and crunchy, I don't usually get tempura but I am definitely going to get this every time I visit because of what a great job they did with it. I got the mixed tempura, and my favorite was the shishito pepper. I know you can order the shishito pepper tempura as its own appetizer, it was delicious so I may consider that next time. The rolls were amazing, the chef's there did a great job of their ratio when making them. read more

Food is good, but service could be a lot better. I came in as a solo diner - sat at the sushi bar. I waited for 10 minutes to be recognized by a server - asked for a menu. Anothet 5 minutes passed before she came back and literally threw the menu at me. She never returned to take my order - the hostess came by and took it and it was served by the sushi chef. No one ever came by to check on me - I finally flagged the waitress down for the check, but she never brought it and I gave up and went to the counter. The waitress came up as I was oaying to ask if I wanted a bag for the take-out box (that I got from the sushi chef). Really??? The food here is really good, but I did not appreciate how I was treated - I got the feeling that as a party of one, I really didn't matter to them. Yashima is a quaint little restaurant with fresh fish and a whole lot of other options. The staff here are also quite accommodating too. So aside from sushi, rolls, plates, combination plates, there are a whole lot of interesting options to choose from. Mind you, I came with a huge party so they just ordered everything. From what I could tell, the quality of food here is pretty good. Is it true authentic Japanese food? Probably not. Doesn't mean you can't enjoy the food though. Friend and I ordered the $17.90 lunch specials (select two items). We ordered the beef terriyaki and chicken terriyaki and CA rolls as second choices. There was nothing that indicated it cost an extra $2.00 for beef or chicken. When bill came we were charged $19.90 each and server said it was because it cost $2.00 extra for the beef or chicken. Have never been to a restaurant where you have a choice for your entree, e.g. beef terriyaki and then pay extra for it! Server showed us a menu showing the extra $2.00 but I believe she was showing us the dinner menu. The lunch menu clearly showed either a $17.90 special for two entrees or $19.90 for three entrees. Service was not great as there was only one server and a large group of ten customers arrived after us along with other customers so she never had time to see if we needed anything plus we could not hear each other talk due to the loud noise in the restaurant. Would we go back again? NO! We will not recommend Yashima to any friends. Do not appreciate being charged the way we were especially since there was no notation next to the beef or chicken entrees that there was the additional $2.00 charge. read more

Last night my family of four came here for sushi/sashimi. The order was simple enough with appetizers and bento box, teriyaki beef, and a roll. The time we got there was about 7 pm and it was crowded. But, our service was terrible. We had to ask several times for our order. Two of the orders came out first. While two others came out about 15 minutes after the first order arrived. Looking around, we saw several people who arrived after us receiving their meals. That's when we started asking where our orders were. The food quality was excellent but the service was poor. No one checked in on us or let us know that they were running behind or that it would take longer than expected. It has been years since we visited this restaurant. The portions of sushi were generous. The freshness was perfect. The servers were very attentive and pleasant. This is a small place so it gets really crowded but still comfortable.
