Yashima has become my husbands favorite local sushi spot. Literally down the street from home, the friendly staff and consistent quality and good service keeps us coming back. We try to order something different each time we come, and today was no exception. For lunch they offer 2 or 3 choice bento boxes, so I tried the Teriyaki Salmon and Mixed Tempura (so good and so much food!). We ordered some appetizers, Shishito Tempura and the Fire Crunch (my favorite, but they typically forget to add the jalapeño and sriracha Mayo drizzle... but it's still so good). Very authentic Japanese restaurant experience! We had a party of 8 so it was a bit of a wait but the service was fast and very friendly! Plenty of parking in the back. The wait took about 40 minutes but it is a small restaurant so if you had parties of 2-4, you will be seated pretty quickly. Luckily our waitress took our order before we sat down so by the time we actually didn't sit down, food came out quick. The food was really good. I loved my udon - very flavorful and the noodles were nice and chewy. The combos looked bomb too. Overall, loved this restaurant because of the friendliness. Came here on a Saturday night with a reservation for 7Pm for a group of 7. Saw the good reviews so wanted to give it a try. When we arrived we parked in the parking lot behind the restaurant and came through the back entrance. When we got in it was packed, and stuffy. We were taken to our table and given some time to read over the menu. They only had 1 so it was difficult for a party of 7 to use. After we ordered we waited and waited, and took a while for even water to come. It took about 40 minutes for the soups and salads to arrived, part of the combos. Then another 15-20 minutes for the first main dishes to come. The charashi bowls that we ordered came last and took that one about an hour to arrive although usually those are the quicker dishes to arrive. We ordered some rolls, charashi bowls, baked scallop roll, udon, tempura, and a salmon collar. Food was alright. Honestly would have been a better experience if the food was spread out in arrival as we were quite hungry waiting. Additionally, we noticed that many tables around us who ordered after we're getting served quicker (multiple dishes) than our table. The servers barely came over even to refill waters. All in all, it took a really long time. So one think to know is that they're pretty understaffed so keep that in mind. The restaurant was nice, but quite crowded and a bit cramped. Eventually they opened the door for more air to come in and then it cooled off, but it was quite stuffy for most of the meal. I should come here more often but because it takes half an hour I don't come as often as I'd like. The sushi chef is real Japanese and they deserve some recognition as the food is superb. The freshness of the sushi and the texture was spot on! I ordered a couple of sushi and tempura and hand rolls. They were perfect for the price! The price is still very reasonable, unlike many places.... I ordered the toro (medium fat) and it was delicious! $19 it was much cheaper than other places. I will be back more often! This is mine and my best friend's "meet me halfway" spot, we do a little ikea and then sushi every couple of months to this mom and pop and it's always so nice to see how they recognize their regulars by name, share drinks and laughs- a very cozy spot! With a very attentive staff, if you want great quality fish, this is the place to go in Azusa. Because they're so great and the smaller size of the restaurant, dining with a group is difficult, so get there very early. We arrived about 30 minutes after opening with 3 people in our party and had about a 20 minute wait. A friend of mine treated me to lunch here the other day. She forewarned me that the food takes awhile to get but it will be good. Yup, it's true. This restaurant was packed with a line on a Saturday evening, and we can see why it's so popular. Luckily for us, we came in between crowds so we had a short wait for a table for 2. You can park in the back and enter through the back door (see photo). Give your name and number in your party to the waitress and then have a seat in the hallway. I'm not very patient so if I saw the line was long I'd probably come back another day when it wasn't as busy, but that's just me. The 2-item dinner combination has great options to choose from. From the miso soup to the side salad with Asian style dressing, to the rice and entrees (I got the fried soft agedashi tofu and salmon teriyaki), everything was great, really hit the spot. Portion size was not huge but more than adequate and satisfying. As I mentioned it can get packed, so if you are still socially distancing, it would be better to get takeout. The waitress was very busy but did stop by to check on us, refill our water, etc. Restaurants that serve this type of variety and combination of Japanese food are getting harder to find, as more trendy and high volume places pop up. Super authentic! No americanized rolls! Just REALLY great sushi, sashimi and teriyaki! I got a spicy salmon cut roll, an avocado cut roll and just chain drank green tea. I feel renewed. As a long-time local customer, I've always enjoyed the food here, which I'd rate an 8/10. However, my last two visits were disappointing due to incorrect orders, and I noticed the same two staff members were working both times. One short Japanese server, the youngest one out of group had always been rude. Worst customer service ever. The service has consistently been poor, earning a 1/10 from me. The atmosphere is fine--just another traditional, small sushi spot. We were served water promptly, but unfortunately, that was the only thing that went smoothly. After sitting down for 10 minutes, no one came to take our order, despite the fact that there were three waitresses and it's a small restaurant. Eventually, I went up to the cashier to place our order myself. Although I was frustrated, I remained understanding, having waited tables myself during my college years. We then waited an additional 30 minutes, which seemed unusually long. I approached one of the waitresses, who told me that they hadn't even started our order yet because they process orders on a first-come, first-served basis, and there were four takeout orders ahead of us. While I respect that every business has its own way of managing things, it would have been appreciated if they had informed us ahead of time that there would be a long wait. We could have decided if we were willing to wait under those circumstances. After waiting 40 minutes, I was understandably upset. Unfortunately, I never got to try the food, so I can't comment on its quality, but based on the service, I would rate my experience as 0 out of 10. To make matters worse, the waitress argued that it wasn't their fault because they were busy--yet I noticed that a party seated after us was already getting their food. Still to this day out of every sushi restaurant I've ever been to (very very many) my favorite spot. As for stand outs: Chilean sea bass. This would even convert non fish eaters trust me. Albacore carpaccio. Any of their albacore in general is unbelievable and tender, but this is paired with the best sauce. Their udon is top level as well. To be honest it's the quality of fish that keeps me hooked though. Never fishy, always the right flavors per the different fish which means they are kept and handled properly. The staff is very sweet shout out to Sachi and everyone. Overall a hidden gem that is and always will be my go to spot. Note to newcomers. You can expect a wait at peak hours. Call to make a reservation or go later in the day on non peak days. Note to impatient eaters. We came here on a whim after shopping at BevMo because last time I wanted to try, they were closed even though Yelp indicated they were open. This time they were open and we didn't need reservations, which was nice. They didn't have jumbo clams or surf clams which we really like. I was surprised because this place had good ratings and was supposed to be a neighborhood gem. The sashimi platter was not bad. My friend had beers. I only had water because I was on medication but it took them long time to refill my water even though it wasn't busy that night. I came here on a Saturday for dinner, about an hour before they closed, and I was pleasantly surprised that it wasn't too packed and that we were able to be seated quickly. They have a back in front entrance, though it looks like the back entrance is more commonly used. There's lots of parking in the back too. The service staff were all very friendly and very attentive. We got several rolls, nigiri, and tempura. I was really happy with all items that we got. The quality of fish seems really fresh and the tuna melts in your mouth. The tempura was really very well made and crunchy, I don't usually get tempura but I am definitely going to get this every time I visit because of what a great job they did with it. I got the mixed tempura, and my favorite was the shishito pepper. I know you can order the shishito pepper tempura as its own appetizer, it was delicious so I may consider that next time. Food is good, but service could be a lot better. I came in as a solo diner - sat at the sushi bar. I waited for 10 minutes to be recognized by a server - asked for a menu. Anothet 5 minutes passed before she came back and literally threw the menu at me. She never returned to take my order - the hostess came by and took it and it was served by the sushi chef. No one ever came by to check on me - I finally flagged the waitress down for the check, but she never brought it and I gave up and went to the counter. The waitress came up as I was oaying to ask if I wanted a bag for the take-out box (that I got from the sushi chef). Really??? The food here is really good, but I did not appreciate how I was treated - I got the feeling that as a party of one, I really didn't matter to them.
