The woman who owns the restaurant is super-duper nice, and we love the food. Yashima has been a part of the Covina community for many years, and it has a lovely neighborhood feel to it. One of Covina's hidden gems! I guess it's not that hidden if you live in the surrounding area, since it IS the best sushi in a 10 mile radius. The fish is always fresh and the 12 dollar dinner combos can't be beat. You get so much (good) food for so little cost. My faves are the Crunchy Roll and Fried Tofu. I used to work in the area so I've only been here for lunch. Always love their lunch bento where you can choose 2 or 3 items and it comes with soup, rice, and salad. My favorite go to is always salmon teriyaki with tempura. I came back recently to meet with ex-coworkers and everything is still the same as I remembered, even all the friendly waitresses are still the same! I have drive passed by this restaurant so many times, today finally decided to try them out. Wife and I got there at 6:00 and the restaurant was packed already. I know that the term "hidden gem" is probably one of the most overused in Yelp reviews, but seriously, it is relatively hidden and it is quite a gem. #1, this place is almost always packed and has a wait, during dinner hours at least. If this place is a secret, I'm definitely the last to know. #2, they have TVs around the place. Catching a game and eating sushi? Zaaang! *thumbs up* #3, the sushi quality is excellent. the turnover is so high, it just has to be. Now for the not-so-good. Yes, service suffers when they're at capacity. The waitresses start forgetting orders and you have to start using more aggressive measures when trying to flag down some service. I understand that it's not an enormous place, and they have to deal with server wages if they were to hire more help, not to mention having to factor in customer ratios that probably fluctuate all day, but they're seriously overwhelmed at times and it shows. It simply takes away from the experience when you want to leave and possibly make room for someone waiting and there's nobody around to take your check. The food here is pretty good. My biggest complaint is the sports blaring on the big t.v.'s. I asked the waitress if they could turn I off, since nobody was paying attention to it. COME ON PEOPLE! So, the waitress seemed not to care and then VIOLA! they turned the sound off and put on some lovely Japanese tunes. It was so much more relaxing. Great sushi joint, not too far from where I live. I had Chirashi bowl for dinner, it was very fresh and tasty. I could say that the chef really spent his time decorating the plate, it looks very beautiful with balance of colors from the fishes and other ingredients. The portion was just about right. My kids were having Kids meal; Chicken Teriyaki / Tempura, it came with rice, salad, miso soup. The combo was perfect for the kids. The servers were very friendly and attentive. While typing, some of our food came out but it looks like the sushi chefs(?) at the bar are the ones taking a long time. The servers are pretty nice thus the 2 stars. I have been going to Yashima for the last 10+ years, and I can basically let that speak for itself. Note on my taste preference: I lean strongly towards traditional Japanese dishes with little to no fusion (grew up in Japanese family and frequently visit Japan.) Not a big fan of heavy Japanese fusion food. Food: 4.5/5- Considering the area and price, Yashima has a great balance of affordability and quality. Food is relatively consistent, and it brings more uniquely Japanese dishes (shishito peppers, soba, oyakodon, nabeyaki) than any other Japanese restaurant nearby. However, the sauces are more on the thicker side (terriyaki and house salad) when compared to traditional Japanese dishes, but much less than other restaurants in the area. Tea is free (generally is for true Japanese restaurants) and the miso soup has generous tofu and seaweed servings (big plus!) The quality of the sashimi and sushi surpasses the quality of most Japanese restaurants within the area. Chirashi is an affordable option to try various kinds of fish. As a lover of hamachi (yellowtail,) I'm happy to say that it's delicious! Their rolls thankfully are not overpowered by the thick, heavy sauces typical of other sushi restaurants, leaving you able to taste more of the actual fish. UNIQUE: Their Seaweed Salad is a true seaweed salad because most of the salad is actual seaweed (not filler lettuce or some other green). Its a sizable salad, and most Japanese restaurants give only 1/8 of the amount of seaweed you get in this one. Seaweed lover's delight! Service: 4/5- Servers are decent, attentive, and friendly, but can be rushed during peak dining hours. Overall atmosphere: It is clear that locals will frequent this restaurant. You can always expect a football, baseball, or basketball game to be on in the three corners of the restaurant, and there tends to be a lively energy in the air, both during lunch and dinner. Make sure to come early on the typical weekend days. The owner, Sachiko, and the sushi chefs (Masao and Hideo), seem to always recognize 1 in 4 of the people that walk in, which makes sense because they are friendly to everybody. SUMMARY: Does a good job staying away from fusion dishes while bringing their own twists to traditional Japanese dishes. It's a great go-to-spot if you're looking for a reasonable, tasty meal and/or want some standard Japanese dishes not typically offered elsewhere. Come join the local scene! It was a warm day and we wanted something light and cool! Yashima it is! My brother ordered the cold soba with tempura. He said it hit the spot. He also loves their fried oysters! My mom tried the seafood salad. It had a lot of seafood but just too much dressing. It was overly sweet so she had to balance it out with shoyu. She would get it again and just ask for the dressing on the side. I order two cut rolls - Salmon Skin and Spicy Salmon. Spicy Salmon is one of my favorites.
