I enjoy locally owned restaurants and Yashima is a place I'd visit again. Food: reasonably priced for delicious food. I had chicken teriyaki which is my usual go to and my litmus test against all Japanese restaurants. If you can't do a decent chicken teriyaki, then just go home. My entree came with salad with the creamy sesame dressing, pasta salad, miso soup, and a bowl of rice. Wait staff: wonderful and patient ladies who helped clean up after my messy kid! Hubby enjoyed the sashimi plate. He said the fish was fresh and the Hamachi melted in your mouth. I had my usual Tempura and California roll combo. Everything was fresh and tasty. The tempura consists of (3) shrimps, zucchini, bell pepper, green bean, yam and sweet potato...a nice variety. I've noticed there is an up-charge for beef teriyaki. Unfortunately, I've never been impressed with their beef teriyaki. The beef is usually over cooked and somewhat grisly. I wish you had the option to upgrade to a better cut of beef. I would not recommend the salmon teriyaki on the combo plate. Generally speaking, it is a thin slice of salmon that tends to be over cooked. Service can be a hit or miss....depending on how crowded the restaurant is. Going early is your best bet! read more

Food was mostly great. Worst customer service i have ever experienced in any restaurant, ever. I ordered their salmon skin roll along with a side of fried calamari. Deep dried Calamari came out first, was amazingly good. Calamari is regularly a chewey dish, its a hard to cook food. It came out almost soft, incredibly good. When the "sushi" came out, it was apparant I was not informed it was baked. It was soft, but very dry. I wouldnt even call it sushi. Just baked salmon, and the skin wrapped in rice. No crab meat, nothing to ballance it out. I politely asked to have it swapped with something else. My server decided to argue with me about that's how it was supposed to be. Really? I cut off the arguement and simply asked for something else. I then asked for a basic salmon roll. Server noted that they have a "small" mini salmon roll, and their regular spicy salmon roll. After questiong how spicy, she asked if i wanted it but non spicy. Perfect. While waiting for my meal, she never took the bad plate of salmon while she grabbed my lunch partners empty dish (foreshadowing). The salmon dish i got was not a regular salmon sushi. The raw salmon was mashed, with a sauce. VERY, VERY good!! And not spicy. I was happy. Until we asked for our ckecks. My check showed all 3 items. Nuh uh, i told my server " i asked to swap those 2. Thats salmon is too dry. Im not eating it" She proceeded to GUILT TRIP me, saying if she took it back, she'd have to pay for it herself. What!? No restaurant works like this! I refused. "Sorry, im NOT paying for it" she then asked me if id pay for half of it. REALLY!? I just barely nibbled the food and had immediately turned it down. "no, i'll pay for the rest of my food. But im not paying for that" as i pointed to the uneaten salmon skin order. "Ok. Ill pay it myself. I'll pay for it myself" as she took it away I then got the correct check with both items. Me and my coworker did not tip. Most of the food here is amazing. Most of the "service" is incredibly bad. Server should be fired for trying to guilt trip me into paying for a failed dish. Yashima is my favorite sushi place of all time. I've been a customer here for a little over 5 years and they've never disappointed me; although I am easy to please. Everything at this restaurant is phenomenal. The food, service, and the environment. Being that I'm a returning customer I'm very familiar with the staff and they're all truly very kind people. The two bar chefs Masao and Hideo are the kindest people, and they're amazing at what they do. The sushi they make doesn't compare to other sushi places around West Covina and I mean that! They always do their best to make sure your food is perfect and in front of you in a timely manner. Especially the waitresses, although sadly I haven't gotten the time to learn all their names by heart, they're all very kind people as well! Every time I come by whether it's to pick up or dine in, they always greet me by name and ask how I'm doing and how my family is (because I'm a regular customer). Currently sitting in the restaurant where I have been waiting for my food for an hour. The 3 appetizers we ordered came one at a time at the 30 minute, 40 minute, and 50 minute mark. Canceled another appetizer because it was pointless at this point. One soup entree came at 30 minutes and another salad entree came at 45 minutes. Still waiting on 2 more entrees and asked for the check because at this point we might not leave for another hour. The restaurant does have a good number of people but that's no excuse for this wait. They should be equipped to handle 80% occupancy at reasonable times. The 4th appetizer came out 70 minutes in since all of sudden it was ready and they couldn't cancel it.... It's not mind blowing but it was still satisfying if you're craving Japanese food. We got two combination set, udon, kids meal and it was a good amount of food for 4 adults and two kids. Fresh decent sushi spot. This place gets packed at night to the point where there is a wait which surprises me, and it seems to be a local spot. I ordered several pieces of nigiri- all of which were fresh, as well as the lobster roll, the spicy tuna on crispy rice, baked green mussels, and baked avocado. The lobster roll was not that good, I would not recommend ordering it as it tasted more like langostino instead of lobster. The spicy tuna on crispy rice was more like spicy tuna on chewy rice. Not bad though. The baked green mussels tasted ok. Normal. I ended up taking the baked avocado togo because the service was taking a long time and we were in a hurry. The bill for two was around $50 before tax and tip which is a little pricey considering how little food it was. Overall it was okay, I don't plan on coming back anytime soon. read more

A restaurant in Covina that feels like home. My dining partner and I came by on a Friday around 8pm and was able to get seated with no problem. The restaurant is a bit hidden with both a front and back door, waiting area towards the back entrance. We ordered a few a la carte orders of sushi and handrolls plus the sashimi platter which was very decently priced for the amount of food. The sushi here was really fresh and the atmosphere was lively and fun. The sushi chefs were toasting many of the patrons at the sushi bar and towards the end of the night, it even got a bit rambunctious! Service was great and the wonderful ladies of the restaurant kept coming back to check on us and refill our hot tea. I'm so glad I found this gem near my house and I am sure that I will be coming back to Yashima! read more

My family and I just lost our go-to place in Glendora and we were SAD! However, after scouting out other Japanese restaurants in our area, we came upon Yashima and we are quite happy with their food! When it comes to authenticity, this place is on the spot! My dad and sis love the sushi and I, the non-fish lover, enjoyed the Sukiyaki and the dinner specials (the gyoza is delicious). The prices are fairly comparable to our last staple so that's always a plus. The location is on the small side, but they send out food at a good pace so people are in and out. The parking is behind the store front and there is usually ample parking. If you are looking for some good Japanese food then this is a great place! read more

The food is great. The sushi is fresh, the cooked foods are also really good, flavorful, and aren't your typical teriyaki with loads of sauce. But this place needs serious work on their service. The restaurant is small, max 10 tables, and tonight there were 4 women working as servers, 2 chefs. They were running around everywhere when that was not necessary at all. I came in with my family at dinner time and the wait was less than 10 min. Something I realized while watching the theatrical show that was Yashima's service... they were prone to many errors. In the frenzy, they tend to forget a lot of things, like setting up our table before dropping off our first dish. Slow down, girls. The food is amazing, we aren't gonna suddenly walk away if we wait an extra 5 min for the table to be set up correctly. As for the wait for the food and beer, the beer took a reminder but that's fine. But the food took a total of an hour and a half. Everything came out very slowly. Our last roll was the Yummy roll, and that came out 1.5 hours after we had been seated. I asked for it to go, since we had already eaten everything else and didn't have room to try it. Btw, we had ordered when we were still waiting to be seated. I realize this place has been open a very long time, and the food is amazing, but you can't ignore their shortcomings, especially when it's screaming at you. I've been frequenting this place for a couple of years now, and it is on my regular rotation for sushi bars in my local area. I have only sat at a table once, and the service was, for the most part, attentive and friendly. Most of my visits are to the sushi bar, and Hideo-san always treats me well. I have yet to have a bad order of sushi. The fish has always been fresh, the rice has a good subtle balance of tartness and sweetness. Park in the back, arrive around 11:30 for lunch, 6:00 for dinner. Favorites: Albacore, Salmon, Halibut nigiri. Yellowtail handroll. Cold soba (yum). Soap box moment: If you have always dunked your entire piece of sushi in a soy/wasabi mix, to the point where all the rice is soaked black, please realize you are not tasting what you are meant to taste. Forget what you've seen/heard/done before. Do yourself the favor of flipping over your piece of nigiri, lightly touch it to the soy sauce, and pop the whole thing in your mouth. Enjoy the marriage of seasoned rice and fresh fish, and you will come to understand a new level of appreciation for this cuisine. read more

My co-workers and I went to Yashima for dinner one night while we were in town for work. I had maguro, hamachi, and aji nigiri, a vegetable roll, and a caterpillar roll. The hamichi and aji were both quite good -- the hamachi in particular tasted super fresh & melt-in-your-mouth. The preparation of the aji was more flavorful than I've had in the past. The maguro tasted not quite as fresh and flavorful, but was okay. All the portions were quite generous. The vegetable roll was okay but not amazing; then again it was $5, and for a really great veggie roll in San Francisco it's generally more expensive than that. The caterpillar roll was super cute, but tasted a bit fishy & the sauce was a little too sweet for my taste. We had excellent & friendly service at the bar, and the prices were definitely cheaper than I'm used to. The atmosphere was a bit harried and loud for my preference, though, and had a very strong fishy smell (even for a sushi restaurant), so I'm not sure if I would go back. Overall, I would give it ~3.5 stars. Not bad if you're in Covina & need a not stupidly expensive sushi fix. read more

Damn I never ever thought I would find a legit sushi joint in my hood! I always have to either drive all the way to HH or dtla just for high quality fish!! Since we are talking about size... Ratio of fish/ratio you might ask? for the rolls it was about 50/50 but for the nigiri, it was def 80/20. so much fish, so little rice (not complaining though). One negative note though, I know nothing in life is perfect... the nigiri and the rolls actually did not hold up (assuming because of the size?! and water used?) and they kept falling off as we ate. This is the go to restaurant when my family drives up to do grocery shopping at Marukai. We have come here only for lunch, but I think often enough to make a fair comment. The fish is always fresh. The lunch deals on chirashi and nigiri sushi is very good. You get a lot food for the price you pay. The combination plate is not bad, also good deal. However, teriyaki beef seems to be on the tough side. The scallop dynamite is more a onion dynamite, the whole things is pretty much filled with onions and more onions. If you stay away from these two options, you are OK. Service is so so only. They are fast to take your order, food comes quickly enough, but that's about it. read more

I finally came tonight and what a huge disappointment! The service was super slow in getting our food. Apparently if you're a regular you get your food way faster. Experience rudeness as I added an extra roll while waiting for something else we had ordered and was asked by the waitress if I wanted that to go since it was going to take a while to get it. I felt ignored and people of apparent Asian descent who were sat easily half an hour after us, were served multiple dishes before our first roll arrived. We love sushi and eat it often but will not be returning here again! Yelp, get with it and fix the rating because this restaurant does not deserve the rating you're giving it.
