Last night my family of four came here for sushi/sashimi. The order was simple enough with appetizers and bento box, teriyaki beef, and a roll. The time we got there was about 7 pm and it was crowded. But, our service was terrible. We had to ask several times for our order. Two of the orders came out first. While two others came out about 15 minutes after the first order arrived. Looking around, we saw several people who arrived after us receiving their meals. That's when we started asking where our orders were. The food quality was excellent but the service was poor. No one checked in on us or let us know that they were running behind or that it would take longer than expected. It has been years since we visited this restaurant. It will be years until we return just based on that experience. read more

Excellent Excellent Excellent!!! This seems to be a family run business. Our first time here. I eat any and all sushi. My wife is a California roll and teriyaki beef fan. The portions of sushi were generous. The freshness was perfect. The servers were very attentive and pleasant. This is a small place so it gets really crowded but still comfortable. Friend and I ordered the $17.90 lunch specials (select two items). We ordered the beef terriyaki and chicken terriyaki and CA rolls as second choices. There was nothing that indicated it cost an extra $2.00 for beef or chicken. When bill came we were charged $19.90 each and server said it was because it cost $2.00 extra for the beef or chicken. Have never been to a restaurant where you have a choice for your entree, e.g. beef terriyaki and then pay extra for it! Server showed us a menu showing the extra $2.00 but I believe she was showing us the dinner menu. The lunch menu clearly showed either a $17.90 special for two entrees or $19.90 for three entrees. Service was not great as there was only one server and a large group of ten customers arrived after us along with other customers so she never had time to see if we needed anything plus we could not hear each other talk due to the loud noise in the restaurant. Would we go back again? NO! We will not recommend Yashima to any friends. Do not appreciate being charged the way we were especially since there was no notation next to the beef or chicken entrees that there was the additional $2.00 charge. read more

Came to Yashima after getting a couples massage at serenity with my bf. It was getting late and we were starving so we dropped by Yashima, because they were opened to 10pm. The little restaurant was bustling with life, even though there were only two other tables. People were sitting around drinking and laughing with the staff, it had a very homey vibe which was relaxing. (Or maybe it was our hour long massage that put us in a good mood lol) We ordered more then usual because we were so hungry: baked green mussels for app, 3 combo bento (sashimi, shrimp tempura, chicken tonkatsu), a nigiri/ca roll set, and a Sapporo for myself. The set meals came with a miso soup and salad each. The miso soup was piping hot and delicious, with lots of tofu and seaweed. The salad had a creamy dressing, also delicious. Next the baked mussels came out, and they were pretty big. The broiled sauce paired lovely with the mussel. Before we finished our mussels, our entrees came out. The nigiri pieces were huge, it was impossible for me to eat it in one bite! My favorite pieces were the salmon, yellowtail, and albacore. Super fresh and fatty! The California roll was also really good, the rice was still a little warm which tasted perfectly with the cold surimi crab mixture. The three combo bento was a great deal, the chicken tonkatsu and tempura was hot and tasty, and the sashimi pieces were also big and fresh. I was cravings Japanese and needed to go to Ikea and I located this place on Yelp. I arrived around 5:30 pm and I was able to get a table right away. I decided to go with the 3 item combo. I decided to go with California rolls, tempura, and salmon. The combo first comes with miso soup and salad. They were both okay. The dressing on the salad was more mayo like. I thought my bento box was super yummy. I really enjoyed the tempura. The batter on the tempura was great. It wasn't greasy and it had a nice crisp to it. I did enjoy my salmon. My salmon was cooked perfectly and the sauce flavors were great. My California rolls tasted really fresh. I finished everything in my box, even those it was a lot of food. There is parking in the front of the restaurant and in the back. The front is street parking and the back is a private lot. You can enter both ways. read more

Yashima is a great, little mom and pop sushi restaurant. It's been in Covina for a long, long time. I have recently re-discovered it and have eaten at the restaurant about 4 times in the last 6 months. The fish is fresh, the portions are large, and the prices are reasonable. There's usually a short wait, so make sure you put your name on the wait list. The service is friendly and efficient. The last time I went to Yashima I got the sushi dinner plate ($18.95). Sachiko and the rest of the staff and cooks have always been super friendly and make dining here a delight. I love so much on the menu here it's so hard to tell you just a few things. But if you're hungry give these a try: Javier handroll, tomato salad, baked mussels, albacore carpaccio, white tuna(if they have it), yellow tail collar and anything the chef's wanting to whip up on the spot. Love this small sushi restaurant located in the heart of Covina. Many years ago we frequented another sushi restaurant and one of their servers recommended Yashima. Turned out she worked here too and with her glowing recommendations decided to give it a try Boy were we impressed!!! The hubs got the 3 item combo with all the extra add ons for $2. Korean ribs- had no meat. Sushi - looks gross and they give you cucumber sushi! Not even California roll?!! Sashimi - it looks gross... with tuna, albacore, yellowtail, and salmon. Friends got the chirashi bowl. Looked ok but the tuna looks waxy. I got the salmon sashimi and that was very fresh and good. This is one of my favorite Japanese restaurants in LA! I ordered a sashimi combo (salmon, tuna, and white fish) that came with rice, miso soup, and salad. The fish was so fresh, and the salmon melted in my mouth when I ate it (so good!). They give the right amount of rice and the salad was fresh. Also, I tried the pork cheek appetizer. Had a good tasty and savory flavor, and the pork was tender. The spicy sauce that came with it tasted good, a bit spicy and salty. This pork cheek tastes more authentic compared to other places. Also, I tried a little bit of the salmon teriyaki. It tasted very fresh and tender, not fishy and not burned at all, unlike other Japanese restaurants. The price was very reasonable (on average, about $15 per order) for super fresh food. Service was nice and the staff were able to accommodate my allergies. I came here on a Saturday around 5pm. Not too crowded when we arrived. The food was good when it finally arrived. It took well over 30 minutes to get our food. The service was not the best. There was no mention of " your food is coming up" or anything. I heard the table next to me complaining about the same thing. I don't really understand what took so long. The servers need to be trained to come out and offer smiling explanations on what's taking so long. Ours were not Sushi orders, just regular plates. When we completed our meal the waitresses brought the check and we paid. It was then that they came 3x to see if we were done. They wanted our table!! Unbelievable!! I wish I could rate it higher but I can't. My experience is only from the take out aspect since I never actually sat down and enjoyed a meal there. They will pick up their phone even when they are closed between 2pm-5pm which is good and answer any questions though the correctness of the answers vary between who you are talking to. One person said I could order rolls and sushi even after the 2pm cutoff but when I tried they said the kitchen was closed. I tried the dragon roll and the shrimp tempura roll on different occasions and it was just a mediocre experience. The dragon roll for one was $18 after tax and totally caught me off guard. It only had avocado and unagi on the outside, some places also include shrimp tempura inside for cheaper. The shrimp tempura roll was two small shrimp tempura pieces along side some sprout and gobo root, no imitation crab meat fill. It was also just the small baby portion roll not the full size roll. They also disposed of the tails instead of including it which made me shed a tear ='( The inside decor is very simple albeit somewhat small with full Japanese staff and chefs. From looking over the menu and tables they give you good decent portions for the price but I always prefer quality over quantity. Speaking of which, they do give good quality ginger and wasabi. I dunno, people seem to enjoy this place, but it is nothing special to me. For a close sushi roll fix though, I may see myself here again but otherwise I will probably venture farther. read more

Yashima is a quaint neighborhood Japanese restaurant with a full sushi bar and table seating. They serve very good Japanese food and the fish they use for sushi is very fresh. The atmosphere is retro Japanese, if not for the flat screen TVs, it could be anytime from the 50s thru the 80d. The staff was very friendly and the service was good.
