I have a love affair with Yats. I have been going to this location once a week for the last couple months (judge me). I like the Chili cheese etoufee but the Maque choix chicken is my favorite. I usually get the half and half meal where you can get 2 options. I also like the Drunken chicken and today I tried the Chorizo and Chicken etoufee and it is a winner. It wouldn't be fair to compare the offerings at Yats to Cajun food in Louisiana or even Texas, but for Cajun / Creole fare in Indiana, it is pretty good. Set up like a fast food restaurant, you seat yourself, place your order and pay at the counter, and they bring your food out on disposable plates. The crawfish chili cheese etouffee was tasty and had a nice kick, but there were literally three pieces of crawfish in it. The chicken maque choux was nice and creamy, but was a tad too sweet. The menu is updated daily on a chalk board, and the service is cordial. A perfectly A-OK experience that I wouldn't mind repeating if I were in the area again. read more

Yats is always consistent regardless of which location you visit. The service is faster than Jimmy John's commercials, always hot, and staff that must be handpicked because they are ALWAYS nice at any location! As with all of the Yats, their always busy, parking can be an issue at prime times, but the warm atmosphere, great food, and reasonable prices outweighs those minor issues. I tried something I hadn't had before which was the Maque choux. It has caramelized onions, plain etouffe, chicken, peppers and with a touch of hot sauces, absolutely first-rate. Our other order was the Red Beans and Sausage and of course, delicious. Don't forget to try one of the hot sauces sitting on counter next to the soda fountain. I had left before I opened the container and realized there was almost no rice in the container. Maybe they were running out of rice and didn't have much? All of these are served over rice and with a pretty damn yummy bread. overall I would give YATZ a 4-star. . .but the drama that went on there, and the fact they weren't prepared to manage it. . .annoyed me. I show up, and the guy is talking on the phone. Obviously with an irate customer. No one else is around to help. . so I wait there in a empty restaurant for . . maybe 5-10 minutes before he finishes up. I understand you have an irate customer. . .but why make two customers. Stews and soups are my comfort food. I need to get that out there because that's what Yats does best. Review is therefore heavily biased. Ambience - casual. The overall design of the restaurant is pleasantly eclectic. The high ceilings with chandeliers provide a great contrast to the deep red walls. Mixes homey with elegance. Food - I loved the Red Bean and Smoked Sausage stew. They didn't skimp on the sausage and the red beans were cooked to perfection. It needed a little more spice for me but luckily Yats has no less than four different custom hot sauces to choose from! In heaven. My friend went with the most popular item - Chili Cheese w/ Crawfish. It was so good I could barely sneak my fork in for a bite. When I did, I was blown away by the creaminess! Service - quick and friendly. The cashier politely gave suggestions and descriptions of each item on the menu. They even offered a taste of the stews. Great creole served on rice. Yats has generous portions but not a huge selection. I had 5 choices including 4 chicken and 1 crawfish dish. Everything I have seen is served in a sauce over rice. Various degrees of heat, I used the powdered creole seasoning to kick it up a notch. Seating is simple with plasticware and self-serve drinks. Reasonably priced and easy to relax and enjoy a quiet dinner or lunch. Lots of seating but very busy at lunchtime. A big yum on this one. read more

I've been hearing about this place ever since I moved here 3 years ago and always thought, 'What's the big deal?' Well, I quickly found out. Came here on a work meeting the other day and met the manager of this location. Nice people! I had the Drunken Chicken and a few bites of their Jambalaya. My favorite part of the meal? THE BREAD! I have no clue what kind of sorcery is spread on that bread that comes with every plate, but I will say that I could have eaten just that bread and given this place 5 stars. The place is fun with beads strewn about. I probably wouldn't do lunch here again because afterwards I felt so full, but for me it makes for a better dinner. Definitely trying again! read more

Yats. Funny name, effing killer food. I have been holding off on this review for a while but now is the time to blow this place up. I had to go to Indiana for a business trip so I am always down to try new places we dont have here in fru fru Napa. My buddy Alex and I were getting together for lunch one day and he recommended Yats. Alex is now my best friend because of this. I knew he wouldn't steer us wrong but oh my god. I have been back for 2 months now and every single day I have thought of Yats. My mouth is drenched right now just thinking about it. I had the chorizo etoufee. I could have eaten a vat full of this stuff. I have raved about this to everyone I know and even am going to use Yelp here as a platform to make an offer. If anyone has some cash and knows how to run a restaurant, I would definatey be interested in throwing some cash in for a shop. Message me via Yelp if you are interested. Yats is a frequently visited place for us, especially during the winter when craving stick-to-your-bones comfort foods. I'm a creature of habit and always get the drunken chicken. I figure, it's so good that there's no reason to try anything else! To the friendly chap behind the counter at Yats who told me the Maque Choux was not spicy: YES IT IS SPICY! Not spicy-spicy, but spicy enough that I was grateful that I had ordered extra bread to cut some of the spice. Someone else tasted my dish and, without prompting, said, "Dang, yours is spicy." See? Spicy! Anyway, we also ordered the chili cheese étouffée, but we were not aware that it doesn't automatically come with cheese, sour cream and onions (you order those separately for 25 cents each). That was kind of a bummer. Overall, we enjoyed our meal. This was our first time eating Cajun / creole food, so we didn't know what to expect, but we will probably be back to try other things on the menu. Score again for Yats! Always delicious. If you live in the Indianapolis area, Yats is a must try. I cannot claim to be an expert in Cajunology, so I'm not judging it on any of the merits of "true" Cajun-ness. I just know everything I have ever had is soooo good. My first visit to Yats, but not my last. My son loves the one near his place in Fountain Square. I visited the Carmel location. I ordered online, super easy, and since I got there early I was able to enjoy the casual atmosphere and fabulous cooking aromas. Red beans and rice, just like mama used to make, excellent. read more

I went to one of these restaurants in Indianapolis a few years ago for a field trip and recently thought about it at random. The trouble was I couldn't remember what it was called or what kind of cuisine it was. I spent weeks trying to remember and when I finally did my family came here for a meal before a concert. I was super excited and the experience was not disappointing. My sister commented that we need to have one of these restaurants in our city. Everyone enjoyed the food and the service was outstanding. We got to sample the stews before deciding what we wanted and each one was explained to us in depth. It made it easy to pick something to our liking. I had the maque choux and drunken chicken, which were both delicious and I highly recommend them. I hope I can return soon! read more

I rarely write a review that is Meh. The service at the Carmel Yats is always good. When I found a big hair in my etouffe, they gave me a new lunch and a card for a free meal. Awesome food. Not much Variety but what they have is damn good. I had the 1/2 and 1/2 chili cheese etoufee and 1/2 drunk chicken. It was plenty of food and heavy. The bread is great. I added all the toppings which are cheese, onion, and sour cream. Sample anything you want before ordering. I don't know how this place isn't packed everyday. I was the only one eating in there. What can I say. I have bean eating at Yats for 20 years and I have never been disappointed. The chili cheese etouffee is always my go to with Crystal hot sauce. Obviously very popular- there was a line waiting to order. This is the second time I've been to this location-and I don't like it much. I ordered 5 meals for takeaway. They are fast! Too fast in my opinion. Here's why- my food was ready in the pickup window, and I was getting some of their hot sauces to go with the orders. The lady working there said she was going to move my food off of the window counter. I asked her where she was going to put it- there were patrons eating at all of the tables. She asked me: "do you want it on the floor?" (Next to the drink/ condiment counter) I said no! She then placed it on the already crowded condiment counter. (Remember- I ordered 5 meals- that was 2 large bags.) I hurried my sauce selection as much as possible- there were other people waiting who couldn't access the area because my bags were blocking it- and got out of there! PHEW! I took the food to my family and we ate it. It was not as good as in the past. The rice to stew ratio was about 70/30, 70% rice. We ordered the B&B, spinach and mushroom etouffe, chili and cheese crayfish etouffee, and chicken maque choux. They were okay. I have been to the Yats Broadripple location countless times- and have recommended it to friends! The food and service there was fantastic! On many occasions I have seen Joe there, greeting patrons. Now I am tasked with visiting Broadripple again to see whether the quality of food and service has declined at all of their locations, or if it is only the Meridian Street location in Carmel, Indiana. It may be awhile, as I live about an hour and a half North of Indy. I'll definitely post a review after I visit. read more
