I got lucky - they had jambalaya on the menu tonight - not an everyday offering. I ordered 1/2 jambalaya and 1/2 drunken chicken. The flavors are so bold - sure to clear the sinuses. Don't forget to get some hot sauce containers. The toasted bread makes this a perfect meal. This was my first visit to this particular Yats, but the restaurant seems laid out like the others in town. The restaurant has a New Orleans vibe with beads hanging from the chandeliers and a few bright colors. The staff is remarkably friendly. The clerk described the daily menu options and I had the Chili Cheese Étouffée with Crayfish. I mean where else in Indy can you get great étouffée? The food comes out fairly quickly. The étouffée is served over rice with a spicy garlic butter soaked baguette. The Étouffée is thick, spicy and creamy with lots of crayfish bits. This is delicious comfort food. The prices are reasonable. My meal was only $10. They have a bar that serves a variety of craft beers and has daily specials. There is a tv in the bar playing college sports. I love me some Yats. We were feeding four hungry people, so got 3 half and half meals, which amounted to every entrée on the menu! The decor isn't anything particularly special, but if you're at a Cajun restaurant, you're going to be too busy enjoying the food to worry about it. The on-tap selection was delicious. I sampled a Pseudo Sue, which earned itself a place on my "order at every opportunity" list with the first sip. We enjoyed every single one of the dishes, and would order any of them again without a second thought. The spice level was manageable even for the token spice wimp in our party. Yum! read more

The guys at the counter were super friendly. I tried their famous chili cheese étouffée with crawfish. All entrees are served over white rice and with toasted garlic bread. This is a no frills place. It's all about the food. Grab your fountain drink, plastic fork, and napkins before you grab a seat. Probably the fastest service I have ever had. Guy walked my meal over to a window seat so I could enjoy the view. But really, it's all about the food! A meal for $10.50 (includes drink)?! So worth the price. The étouffée was hot and steaming off my plate. The portions are huge. I had to take some leftovers home. Creamy, spicy but not too spicy. Flavorful. And you could see the chunks of crawfish. Rice was standard white rice. And the toasted garlic bread also has great spice and butterfulness. I love "hole in the wall places" like this in strip malls. Yats is one of those restaurants where the food is consistently prepared with the same flavor outcome of each dish regardless of the location. Yats opened around 15 year ago and has several (5 or 6) Indianapolis area restaurants. This Creole and Cajun franchise has delicious options, including vegan and vegetarian, and the staff is helpful if you're having trouble deciding on a dish. They are known for how quickly orders are ready. Table service is not available and dine-in orders are placed at the counter. Most, if not all, restaurants have returned to dine-in options and, of course carryout. A full order serves 1 person and is 8 ozs of sauce and 8 ozs of rice with one order of their delicious garlic bread. Extra bread can be ordered for an upcharge. A Pint (16 ozs) can also be ordered with amounts doubled and serves two. Several bottles of different mild and hot sauces are available to top off your entree, if desired. Most restaurants have returned to dine-in since Covid restrictions have lessened and of course, carryout is available. Two of my favorite entrees is Maque Choux which is a corn based dish made with cajun seasoning, bacon, onions, peppers and a touch of heavy cream. Great as a main course or side dish. My other favorite is Drunken Chicken which is a spicy stew of shredded chicken, rosemary, garlic, crushed red pepper, beer and bread crumbs. Both are excellent to which I add Lightning Strike Sauce to taste and I always order extra bread. Red Beans with Smoked Sausage is my husband's favorite entree. He likes adding several teaspoons of Louisiana Lightning Strike Sauce for some heat to all his entrees. He doesn't eat cheese or dairy products so this fits his tastebuds perfectly. A spicy vegan and gluten free white chili is another option. The Chili is made with navy beans, roasted red peppers, onions, jalapenos and tomatoes. The decor has a simple, cute New Orleans feel with masks, posters and beads with 4-top tables for dine-in. If you've never been before, give them a chance and order around your favorite ingredients. read more

Extra Bread!! I love this place but I'm sure it's not helping my cholesterol lol. The bread that is included is like a garlic bread with some cajun seasoning. It's usually toasted and full of butter/oil. It tastes great but very salty. In terms of main course, I usually get the drunken chicken; it's savory and packed full of flavor. I am not as huge of a fan of the maque chiox which is sweet. I've heard good things about the chili cheese etouffee with crawfish, but don't expect too much crawfish at this price. My friends have bragged about Yats and the food here, so wanted to check it out for myself for dinner. I stopped in and noticed a nice ambiance that had a classic style Louisiana Cajun feeling to it, and Lord and behold, that was the type of food being offered at Yats. The bar was nice and classy. The staff greeted me with a smile and took my order. It was a limited menu, so it made it easy. I decided to try the Chill Cheese Etouffe with Crawfish served over white rice and garlic bread. It was good,but felt it lacked some flavor and seasoning. If this is supposed to be a Louisiana Cajun style cuisine place, then the food has to represent its brand. Each entree has to have seasoning and flavor to it that will blow your mind away. This entree was good and tasted great, but it just need to have some more flavor and seasoning to it to give it that extra "kick" Cajun style. The service and staff are wonderful and very professional, so that did make a difference to me. If I come back to Yats, I will try something else to see how that tastes and if it is more flavorful. I like Yats! food. And other locations are great. This one I'm a little iffy on. I came in for lunch on Sunday. There was an employee lying on the back counter. You read that right. He was just lying on the counter and browsing his phone. There were three other customers in the store, so it wasn't like I caught him at an unguarded moment. After helping me, he went back to lying down on the counter again. One other coworker was there with him, and she complained about how little she wanted to be there that day. The store overall was clean enough and the food tasted like Yats! food always does. I can't dock them for either of those. Offer a rotating menu of delicious cajun/creole dishes (etouffee, gumbo, beans & rice, jambalaya, etc.) for under $7. It just works. 1) Order at the counter, 2) Get your own beverage from the fountain (or get a beer). 3) Seat yourself. 4) Wait for your name to be called. 5) Pick up your food. 6) Add your own hot sauce(s). 7) Enjoy. You can be in and out in 20 minutes if you wish or you can relax and spend an hour.
