Ocala isn't the type of place that a fancy, $16 burger is easy to come by. It's even harder to find such a burger, and feel good about it, because I'm not a fancy-burger kind of guy. The Yelloow Pony Pub and Garden was a pleasant surprise to me, as was the World Equestrian Center as a whole. Located inside the WEC Hotel, the Yellow Pony Pub is a British-style pub with excellent but short selection of sandwiches and pub fare, liqour, and respectable selection of beers. The atmosphere is pleasant, upscale, and fun in an understated way. I visited on a lunch date, but think it would be a wonderful stop on a Friday after work with collegues, or on the evenings, when it appears that they have live music outside on the patio. read more

Took about 20 minutes to be seen by a waitress, as other parties sat after us were being attended to. We ordered a couple of drinks and starters. The chicken noodle soup felt like it was canned, and the noodle to broth ratio could be improved. The ahi tuna roll was very good. The pretzel was not only impressive but perfectly salty, warm, and soft. It paired perfectly with the sauces provided. The chicken wings were very good as well and lathered well. This experience was less than desirable. We stopped in last Thursday evening. The restaurant itself is really beautiful and the decor is super unique with cool things like saddle barstools. We were given to high top. Our server took drink orders but our drinks (all non alcoholic beverages) took almost 15 minutes to arrive. Upon arrival, we asked our server if we could order. We ordered things like burgers and tomato soup and grilled cheese sandwiches. Our food took a really long time, but upon arrival, everything tasted fine but not outstanding. Our bill took forever to arrive. We had to ask for refills of our beverages. Our bill arrived and it was very high for what we had. The whole dinner took way to long. First time here. Located in the beautiful WEC hotel. There were six of us and we didn't have a reservation. The hostess said they were full inside, but said there was some seating outside so we took it. The waiter was very helpful and we were provided with menus and drinks immediately. He also brought over a heater since the wind was blowing, and it was a little chilly outside. They have a nice menu and I chose their Reuben sandwich with fries. This was a wonderful experience. We stopped at The Yellow Pony Pub and Grille at the Equestrian Center. We were seated outside in front of the entertainment. Because it is their Pub restaurant, the menu is limited. My wife ordered a Burger, onion Rings and a beer and I had Wings and a beer. First timer at the World Equestrian center. Everything is impressive and the grounds are all well groomed. The restaurant is just around the corner from the lobby inside the main hotel. The aesthetic was dark and of course equestrian themed. They have high top tables with saddle chairs. The wait for lunch was a bit long. We had to wait an hour for a table of 8. The cocktail and wine lists are actually more pages than the menu. Cocktails took some time to get out after ordered. I chose the shrimp and grits for my entree and I would have given it a 3/5. It had about 5 small shrimp, undercooked okra and way too much grits. The shallots were odd and were like taking a big bite of straight onion. I'd definitely give it another try with a different dish, but a little over priced for food. read more

My mom was in town visiting so we took her to WEC to attend service at the chapel, catch a dressage competition followed by lunch at the Yellow Pony. Located in the opulently designed Equestrian Hotel, I was looking forward to trying out their Reuben which my wife has tried and raved about. Upon being seated and presented the menu, we all gravitated towards their Reuben sandwich. We ordered a soft pretzel...and it was huge and delish. It came with a cheese and a mustard-based dipping sauce. My wife and mom shared a Reuben sandwich and a side of sweet potato fries. I ordered the Reuben as well with garlic parmesan fries. The Reuben was well prepared, with smoky pastrami that was finely chopped...so tender and savory. The sweet potato fries were crispy on the outside and airy inside. I couldn't finish my sandwich and fries and took them home for a later meal...still tasty. A very nice dining experience in a well appointed space. Service and ambience were top notch...and so was the price. Lunch for 3 (even with sharing a sandwich) with tip came out to just under $90. read more

This place was on my bucket list to try. I didn't have a reservation, but I arrived on a Sunday evening. It was quite crowded, however I was seated immediately in a table near the bar. I tried the Sudden Impulse (15 dollars), a sweet drink with bourbon, lemon, and cherry. It was pretty good, but could have been a quarter horse stronger for 15 dollars. I had the chicken sandwich (24 dollars) for my main plate, but decided to go it grilled instead of fried. The chicken was tender and juicy, and I loved the arugula, pickles, and jalapenos. It provided a tangy and spicy kick. The fries were alright from the small ketchup provided.. For dessert, the cheesecake of the day was bourbon pecan (11 dollars), and it was small as a pony, but still rich and delicious. I was able to finish the whole thing. The service was friendly and helpful, even during a crowded night. The atmosphere is loud and equestrian themed. Many of the patrons might be showing at the equestrian center, so you will hear a lot of horse talk. There are saddle seats that are very comfortable to sit on, and I had a nicely padded English saddle. If you don't want to straddle a saddle, then there are plenty of regular seats as well. The bar is in the center, and the dining area around it is inviting. While the atmosphere looked formal, I was allowed inside with a T-shirt. Outdoor seating is available and I heard there are live music too. The restaurant is located inside the luxurious Equestrian Hotel at WEC. It can be difficult to see the signs to the hotel at night, but parking was free and plentiful. Being in a luxury hotel, expect it to be horsey expensive. My overall bill was about 65 dollars after taxes and tips, so best to better pony up the hay! However, it is worth the splurge for a nice meal. So hop on a saddle and pretend you are showing on a horse while enjoying the nice food and drinks. read more

We stop in after attending the Ocala Home and Garden Show. What can I say? We were greeted by two lovely ladies that were so polite. There was a short wait and was suggested to have a cocktail at the bar. Our bartender was Alejandro and was so friendly, knowledgeable about their spirits , his cocktail skills were so impressive!! Instead of getting a table we decided to stay at the bar. We order a light lunch. Spicy Ahi Tuna Rolls and Smoked Chicken Wings with a Bourbon BBQ sauce. Both were delicious! It's a solid 4. The white wine list leaves so much to be desired and they have not changed it for years. We sampled all 3 chardonnays by the glass and none were good so opted for the highest priced chardonnay bottle on the menu at $120. Still subpar! Guys, why can't you change up the offerings please? The kale and beet salad wasn't bad; however the added chicken was very tough. The salad was pretty skimpy also. The hamburger was the best of all three entrees. We received a negative comment from the hostess over a chair. Once I spoke to a manager, they slapped a 20% gratuity on the table. I will not be going back or eating at WEC. read more

I have mixed feelings about the pony. Sometimes it's good, sometimes it's not, the service is usually pretty bad. It's has a great atmosphere but gets very loud. If we are going to spend $81 for lunch (pretzel appetizer, fish 'n chips, chicken sandwich, 2 Cokes), we expect to be blown away by the quality of the food. We were not. We were greeted by an unenthusiastic host who looked like he would rather be anywhere else but where he was; however, our server immediately came to our table and introduced himself and made us feel so welcome. We think his name is Kyle and he's a true asset to this establishment. Kyle suggested the pretzel appetizer, so that's what we got. It was absolutely delicious and our favorite part of the meal. The pacing of service was just right and our entrees arrived quickly, but not so quick that we felt rushed. My husband asked for malt vinegar for his fries and he was brought a bottle of it, but it was quickly retrieved since the restaurant "only has 1 on hand" per the young man that brought out our meals. The fish was soggy on the bottom and the breading was not at all crunchy. My chicken sandwich could have been cooked a little longer. The consistency was a bit odd and I only ate 1/4 of it. The decor is nice and felt upscale even though ESPN was playing on the large television on the back wall. ) The seating was very comfortable. The only thing that bothered us about the surroundings is that the runner, or busser, cleaned a dirty table, ran his hand through his long hair, then set out small appetizer plates on the clean table in preparation for the next guest. His thumb was prominently splayed all over the top plate. Then he did it again with another set! I wish I don't notice these things, but it still doesn't stop me from dining out! We dined there tonight and Briana was our server! She was very attentive and super sweet. We sat outside, there were 5 of us. For appetizers we had the giant pretzel and it was so good with the sauces and also ordered the honey garlic wings. I had the ahi tuna poke bowl and I enjoyed it. We tried the white and red sangria and both were delicious. They turned on the heater for us as it was a bit chilly. The only reason for the 4 stars is because the sushi roll was too spicy for my daughter. I feel like we should have been warned about the spice as all restaurants are different, the menu should state the amount of spice from 1-10. Both Id happily order again, but I have a feeling all their cocktails are amazing! For our dinners, we ordered seafood mac n cheese, hamburgers, short ribs, burnt ends and grits, flatbreads, bao buns and sushi! Everyone loved their meals! They were fantastic. I started w/ the Ahi Tuna Bowl which was not filling & didn't w/ fresh ginger or Wasabi which I asked for since it came w/ the Sticky Buns. It was good. The Flatbread was very good, if it wasn't ALL Crust. (See pic) The homemade Bleu Cheese dressing on the side was delish to dip it in. I am shocked a chef would allow it to be sent out. The four corner bites had barely anything. Bartender Daniel (?) 5 stars & made great recommendations, including the Kale Salad I'll try next time. He was great & right on top of everything! Never had to look for him. Pricey, touristy, but everything is inside of WEC. Expected more out of the food. Spectacular decor! My kiddos love their mac and cheese. It is bland to me. The ease of this is what brings me back. Bartenders pour nice strong drinks and not skimpy. If you are in town for a horse show, this is usually a crowded spot. Had the brisket nachos last time I was there mid dec and had to ask for more meat bc it was like a giant mound of chips, lots of sauce and 5 pieces of meat. Hated to complain, but my husband wasn't having it. Bartender happily brought us more meat, no problem. This first time I visited, I dis not care for the drinks here. However, the second time I visited, I had 2 cocktails that were really impressive. The one that stood out to me was this lavender cocktail. I usually don't like lavender cocktails because they seem to err on the side of tasting like shampoo or cologne to me. This one was not only pretty, but it was aromatic, and it had a good balance of the flavors. I was pleasantly surprised. The hours for the Yellow Pony can be late, which is good if you want to just take a cocktail to your room like I did. I would highly recommend this drink if they still make it.
