    Greek Pizza! OPA!

I've been an obx visitor since my honeymoon 30 years ago. Yellow Submarine was on the landscape back then but I never tried until tonight. My son and I were exploring locally owned food offerings after a long trip and decided on Yellow Submarine. We were advised when we placed the order at the counter, delivery would be about 35 minutes. Not an issue based on the traffic coming and going into this place. We ordered the large Yellow Submarine and a medium Greek specialty pizza. The former is the house version of a cheesesteak with onions, mushrooms, pepper, tomatoes, lettuce and mayo and cheese mixed in with the meat. The latter was a smorgasbord of spinach, feta, black olives and red peppers. Wonderful! Why did I wait 30 years to visit this OBX icon? Shame on me!

We came to Yellow Submarine to dine in during the Thanksgiving week, the restaurant was pretty quiet since this was the off season. Decor is cute with some beachy vibes. We ordered a pizza half cheese and sausage. We had to try the rip curls, I'd describe them as similar to a bite size stromboli. Very tasty and something unique, I recommend ordering the curls for an appetizer. I'm picky when it comes to pizza since I'm from NY, but I'd give it an 8 out of 10. Salads are also on the menu incase you are looking for a healthier option. Service was good and they checked back on us on a regular basis. I don't usually stay in this part of the Outer Banks, but I wouldn't hesitate to come back for another pie.

As we pulled into the Outer Bank to start our week long vacation, we stopped for lunch in Nags Head on our way to Kill Devil Hills.

Don't go anywhere else for your pizza in the area. Seriously, you want pizza, you're in Nags Head,…read moreyou have to order from only here. It is delicious. We ordered well ahead of time online, that way it would be ready for pick up as we passed by. After ordering, you will get an estimated time of when it will be ready. We were given a time and then made a stop before coming here. However, they are quicker than the estimated time. Which is a great thing, less waiting when you pull up, but not good if you get stuck elsewhere beforehand. Pulled in, right up to the window, let them know I had an order. Within seconds, my order was in my hands. The hardest part about this was the enticing smell in your vehicle back to your house. Totally takes over and your stomach starts grumbling. When we got back, we immediately opened up those boxes so the aroma filtered through the house. Each pizza was amazing. The garlic bread was amazing. The right amount of garlic that doesn't overpower. Then the pizza itself blows you away. Perfect crust, perfect amount of sauce, perfect amount of toppings. Made you go back for a slice over and over again. Then it doesn't hurt that there are personal touches to each box with a message. Each box has a message when you open. A nice touch from such an amazing place to grab a slice.

Love how they write fun messages on their boxes Enjoyed the garlic bread Cons: Plan ahead cause it can take a while to get your order Pizzas were just ok, nothing super special Pro tip: Place your order earlier in the day, maybe even as you are driving into town for the week. That way you won't get stuck in a huge queue!

We were unofficially judging grilled cheese and mac and cheese all week, and this one absolutely held its own. I ordered the Smash Burger Pizza, and I was skeptical until the first bite. It somehow captures all the flavors of a really good smash burger, complete with the tangy "special sauce" flavor, pickles, beef, cheese, and onions, but on a wood-fired pizza crust. It sounds a little ridiculous on paper. It works. I also accidentally ordered one of their cannabis-infused cocktails because I apparently skipped over an important word on the menu. It did exactly what it promised without sending me into another dimension, which was appreciated. The only downside was that I spent the rest of the evening happily eating leftover Smash Burger Pizza and wondering why anyone would order anything else. The atmosphere was laid back, the service was friendly, and we'll always say anything positive about anyone who helps take care of our sweet little one. We'd happily come back the next time we're in Manteo. Don't let the current rating scare you away. We almost did, and we'd have missed out on one of our favorite meals of the trip.

Let's start with the positives:…read more Love that it's in Manteo and the place has a nice vibe to it. Would've like to try the Weeping Radish Beers but kids were with me so I passed. The Pretzel was good, no doubt about that. All of the breads were very fresh. Unfortunately, everything got worse after the appetizer pretzel at our table. The hot honey on the New Yorker Down South functioned more like a sticky grease. But if not for the honey, I don't think I would've tasted anything at all. The service wasn't good either. Our waitress appeared to be getting frustrated just by those at our table asking questions. The only time she lit up was when she bragged about the two smash burger ideas she came up with that made the menu. She wasn't terrible, but maybe I'm just being nice considering I felt us being there was an inconvenience to her. When someone at our table asked to add lettuce and tomato to their burger, she replied that this isn't a build your own burger place and that she works at the Lost Colony where you can do that...but not here. It was odd. My family has gluten allergies which sucks...but when we asked if any desserts were gluten free she said the tart was the only one she was aware of. It might have been, but saying "aware of" led me to believe there could possibly be others but she didn't know and wasn't asking. Ok, I convinced myself, the service was bad. In fact, the place was practically empty and they stuck all 7 of us in a booth. My daughter who is extremely gluten sensitive has to cut off a piece of her pizza because the waitress bumped it against mine when she put it on the table. In her defense, we had no room for it. When the waitress brought back my youngest daughters Smash Burger (because they didn't put cheese or mayo on it) she could only fit half the plate on the table. So my 8 year old ate off a plate with half the plate dangling off the side...bizarre. I'm giving 2 stars because I believe the meal could've been better. Living in a family with gluten allergies and having none...I get how it can be frustrating (apologies to those gluten free...I get that it's way more frustrating for you). I'd probably stick with a pretzel, order a standard smash burger & do the beer sampler. If you're driving over 15 minutes to get here, probably safest to try somewhere else.

"Fast, convenient, good takeout Italian sandwiches, entrees, and more"…read more Punchline-- pass on the sandwiches (tasty but not big) and go for the entrees (giant and similarly priced) We ordered some takeout from this place based on positive Yelp reviews. Fortunately, Yelp came through for us! Note, although some things mention that you can eat in, at the time of this review, there were no visible tables inside-- it seemed to be a takeout only operation. Also, some of the online menus are now wrong-- they list all the meals and sandwiches as coming with a drink included, but they do not do so any longer. We opted for sandwiches and dishes, but they do have some desserts too-- we didn't partake this time. Service: very friendly, both when ordering and during pickup. They also warned us as we ordered about the menu/ drink change mentioned above, which helped prevent any unpleasant surprises. Food: Two of us got sandwiches and two got meals. Mozzarella caprese & Italian cheesesteak sandwiches -- both very good. Each came with a side of chips. But my family members who got these finished their food for dinner and found themselves still hungry. Note, these sandwiches cost $14. Lasagna & eggplant parmigiana -- These came with garden salads (though you could opt for bread for the eggplant parm). GIANT. It was a vat of food. I will say that a lot of the weight was the delicious tomato sauce, so there's a reason to consider getting bread. But even still-- I didn't finish my meal, nor did the other person who ordered one. These cost $16-17. Quite a contrast to the folks who ordered the sandwiches. Synopsis: Go for the entrees. WAY better value. And worth hitting up this place more generally for takeout if you want a break from seafood.
