The absolute worst Chinese food I've ever had! I just moved to Chesterfield and was looking for my new go to take out chinese. I ordered what would be 20-30 bucks at another place, when it was delivered it was $50.00! I read the other reviews and didn't believe it would be that expensive. I lived in VA for the last 6 months and just recently moved back to GA. I must say I miss Yen Ching sooooo much...I was so obsessed with their food especially their wonton soup...i miss that the most...AWWW i get sad just thinking about it.....nice ambiance....a lil waterfall....tons of plants....its just really peaceful....i dont know...I just really loved that place! Very bad customer service. Dont deserve even 1 star. It was 9:45 still 15 min for closing and they very rudely said we r closing in 10 min. We were almost done eating but left the place without finishing the food. Wont ever go back again. The neighboring place vietnam garden has better customer service than theirs. I don't know what has happened but this place is not what it used to be. My family has enjoyed the impeccable service and food her for years until.....Christmas Eve. For us Yen Ching has become a treat which made our recent experience all the more disappointing. We arrived and greeted warmly and seated. We expected a little wait. Long story short. Cocktails were lovely, placed our order. At LEAST 30 minutes later we were given some crispy noodles and told they were having problems in the kitchen. Shortly there after my meal came out. We ordered hot tea. No other meals came out. I politely mentioned to the server in a humorous way that we all at my meal as an appetizer while waiting. He apologized for the delay. The rest of the food arrived. He hurried bringing the bill. We had to ASK for our orange slices and fortune cookies. The owner was there, NOT once did he come by and apologize! I know he was aware of a delay. We will never go back after at least 30 years. Yet another Richmond institution going down the drain due to poor customer service. I am not going to review the meal because of the situation we did not enjoy it. They used to be consistent in serving fresh hot meals. That is why I'm giving this review two stars. read more

This is one of my favorite Chinese food places in town. What I've learned is that you should order something that other places tend to screw up on and to try anything they put their name next to and you won't be disappointed. Perfect example is their shrimp fried rice. It came with real medium to large size shrimp and lots of it. I've noticed other places use small baby shrimp that you put on salads. The staff are nice, the food is quick, the decor is not too over the top, and the prices are reasonable. I would say, if you're looking to try something new, this is worth it. We tried Yen Ching after getting a groupon and I must say we were pleasantly surprised. We started with the vegetarian spring roll and dumplings and they were all pretty decent. The main course had huge servings and good taste. The dessert selections were just two and we tried the cheesecake which was surprisingly good. The ambiance is great with quality of furniture and seating above average for the area. Our experience was great and this is definitely above average quality and experience with average prices. Entree prices were pretty reasonable. I would say they could use a tad bit less oil in their preparations, enhance the taste of sauces a bit more and they have potential to become a 5 star place in this area. read more

We moved to the Richmond area about a year ago and tried a couple of Chinese restaurants before Yen Ching. Our first several meals there were wonderful. Moo Shu dishes which had not been my favorite elsehwere were excellent here - with a sweetness and wonderful taste. Other dishes also proved to be excellent. Service was not the highlight - ranging from indifferent to OK, but the food made up for it - until today. My wife ordered Chicken with Cashews, which she's had several times before at Yen Ching and dozens of times in other restaurants. I ordered General Kew Chicken which I'd never had before. My wife immediately noticed a different taste - kind of vinegary. I had the same experience with my dish, but as it was supposed to be "spicy" (it wasn't) I thought it was part of the spices. We mentioned it to the waiter who brought the manager over. We asked if there was a different chef or change in recipe. He checked with the kitchen and said nothing had changed -- any chef on duty prepared from the same recipe. We repeated that something was different,, but he just left. My wife was quite upset with her dish and told the waiter, and asked for the meal to be removed from the bill. He called the manager over, who said he could only take off half the charge (why, we still don't know as he owns the place). Hopefully the taste was not tainted chicken. Up until that point I was inclined to give them another chance, but with such poor customer service, we'll look elsewhere. read more

I went there a while ago for the first time. Decor was good, service was alright buy food was terrible. Fried rice was lightly sautéed then dumped with soy sauce. One of the worst Chinese American restaurants I've ever been to and I've eaten in many Chinese American places in Richmond alone. read more

I just recently moved to Richmond and I have already made two trips to this place. Their Beef Sticks and Pork Fried Rice are really good. The only complaint is that I have to order a full order of the Pork Fried Rice and can not add it to a lunch or dinner combo. That would be the 5th Star. Over all, great food. read more

This restaurant is quiet and comfortable, with a beautiful fountain as a centerpiece. I love meeting friends here for lunch for several reasons. First, we can actually have a conversation without yelling. Secondly, the lunch menu offers a good amount of food for a very fair price. The servers are pleasant and prompt. I've been coming here for the last 20 years and the food here has only gotten better. I've lived in both Los Angeles and New York and have still not found Chinese food better than here. I have been eating here for years and my recent experience was VERY disappointing. The manager was very rude and unprofessional. I placed an order and within a minute of placing the order I asked for a refund..I called and he immediately refused to refund my order. I asked him nicely once more and he refused again. Terrible customer service!!! The business blamed their treatment of myself ( a loyal customer) on their frustrations with a business attached to theirs (something about loud music). You should treat your customers with respect and understand that they are the reason you have a business. As of yesterday this clear disrespect and lack of customer service has forced me to take my business elsewhere in the future. read more

After struggling to find good Chinese food after moving to Richmond two years ago, my girlfriend and I finally found Yen Ching! They have the best Chinese in the area that delivers! Our favorites are the Szechuan chicken, sweet and sour chicken, sesame chicken, and lo mien. Their egg rolls are also out of this world! They also have the quickest delivery of any place I've ordered from. They usually show up within 20 min. after ordering. The only reason I'm not giving 5 stars is because their soup leaves much to be desired. Other than that, Yen Ching is definitely a top pick! read more

This is a neighborhood favorite with many regular customers. I have enjoyed it since the early 90's. My wife loves the fountain and the soft lighting. My mom and I went back to Yen Ching since last year, and I figured why not take her on Mother's day, since we wanted to give it another shot. When we got there it was moderately busy but not chaotic at the time, we got seated in the booth in the up level of the restaurant. The server greeted us nicely and took our orders, we had barbecued spare ribs as appetizers with general tao's chicken, sesame beef, and mixed vegetables delight as our main course. As we got done with our food, we asked for the check, when the server got back to us he thank us for the visit and gave us a parting gift which had some goodies in there that I was surprised. I wanted to add a few meal suggestions to my review. The Crispy Chicken is amazing, and my husband's favorite. In my opinion, it is better than all the similar chicken dishes (General Tsos, Sesame Chicken, etc). I love keeping it simple with Beef and Mixed Vegetables, though I ask them to make it hot and spicy, and its always perfect. I also love the Shrimp and Lobster Sauce, great over rice. For appetizers, the crab rangoons, shrimp toast, and egg rolls are all great. Bottom line, the food at Yen Ching is top notch, and not overly greasy. Tastes fresh and yummy! read more

Pretty good chinese take-out. Not super greasy like some Chinese food. The sesame beef was really good. I've had better crab rangoons, they were mostly cream cheese. I'll try it again next time and ask for everything super spicy---that was my main complaint: when I order a spicy dish, i would like for it to be spicy. BEST CHINESE IN RVA!!! Grew up in the Southside and always ate at their Midlo Tnpk & Hull St locations... moved out West and thankfully live close to their other location out here. Quality and taste is always fantastic, consistent and their customer service is stellar! They remember my name and even ask my parents if I'll be dining with them when they visit as soon as they walk in the door...and even remember what we all order - how, I don't know! Great place to eat but not for Christmas Day! Place was packed with only two waitresses and minimum staff to run. In addition, though we have ordered the same dishes here as before, they burned the fried rice making all food inedible. While taking the issue to management, they indicated their was nothing wrong despite leaving 3/4 of the food on the table and refusing to credit our meal. I will not be going back and will encourage others to take their business elsewhere since they do not care about the quality of their food. read more
