I've been coming to Yo-C to see Yoshi for Japanese Hair Straightening for 3-4 years now, and have been pleased each time. I have naturally curly, frizzy, poofy, approx #3B Caucasian hair of low density so it's quite difficult to manage. But, Yoshi has helped make my life easier in that regard. I've heard horror stories of stylist burning hair off from improperly doing Japanese Straightening, but I've never had any such problem at Yo-C. Yoshi is always professional and knows what he's doing. Also, I have not experienced excessive hair loss after the treatment that can be a common side effect. For reference, my hair isn't pin straight now, but I didn't want it pin straight anyway; just straight enough to withstand humidity and water, and hold a style after flat ironing. Yoshi and his assistant are always cordial and sweet. Offering a peppermint scented neck massage to release some tension and relax. Music was cool and loungy. Watching Yoshi cut tresses is like watching an artist beautifully sculpt together a masterpiece. I remember the first time he cut my hair there was something special about the way it was done. I am a huge fan of Yo-C salon. I used to go to Hayato but recently changed after the salon got bigger and my stylists have either moved on to another location or their price per cut increased. I like Yo-C because of the individual attention I get. I never feel rushed even though I'm the last customer to arrive. Yoshi has a great eye to detail and I'm always pleased with his cuts. I still go to him even though I've moved out of town for school... I've been to 3 different salons in the town I live in now, but still nothing compares to the quality of cuts I get from Yoshi's salon! Got a bang trim last minute appointment here with Nao, who worked with me to create a cut that I was satisfied with. She helped refine it little by little, since the initial cut wasn't so expertly done. In the end I was pretty happy. One of the few places that does $10 quality bang trims. I have super long and thick hair which I had always got straightened in San Francisco but recently moved to NY so that was not an option anymore. I am a very picky person when it comes to my haircut. I have been to most of the Korean salons in Ktown, Manhattan and a few celebrity stylists in the city. I also have been to 3 other Japanese hair salons in NYC, but Yo-C Salon is the best for my semi-curly Asian hair. (And the only Japanese stylist who will not give you shaggy hair cut! YES!!) I really like that Yoshi listens and he is very careful before cutting down the length. And gives you great scalp massage! Sometimes he is too careful that when I asked for 2.5 inches, he cuts like 3 cm. LOL My hair grows fast, so I tend to lose shape easily, but somehow his haircut looks better as it grows. I bring my mom as well and she loves it. The only negative thing I want to mention is that his price is a bit all over the place as I referred many of my friends and it is not consistent. read more

I've been getting my hair cut by Yoshi for 3 years. He is by far the best hairdresser I have ever been to. Yoshi is able to cut a variety of hair - my hair is thick and curly and often unmanageable. Yoshi is the first person to make me love my hair. He's able to cut it beautifully whether I want it a bit shorter or if I want to grow it out. I remember one year I wanted to grow it out and his hair cut was of such quality that as it grew out, it still looked incredible and I didn't need to go back for six months! I could not recommend Yoshi and his salon more highly. The salon itself is cute an well run. The assistants know what they are doing and the chairs are the most comfortable salon chairs I've ever used. Weekends can get a bit busy, so if you can, go during the week. read more

I love this place!! 1st time being there, I had no idea what I wanted to do with my hair except to make it shorter and put some color on. Reiko was very patient with me, and very easy to communicate with. My hair is thick and almost unmanageable, but Reiko gave me a hairstyle that looks nice even when I get out of bed and just brush it lightly. She also put some color on that isn't VERY visible but enough to make me look different (in a good way). I think I found a hair salon that I can go back to for the technique and price!! BEST haircut experience I've ever had!!! I'm overly emotional when it comes to haircuts. I ask a million questions, want to make sure the stylist completely understands what I have in mind. I never felt like Reiko was losing her patience w/ me, which was great! She convinced me to take a little risk w/ my new color, and it's the best I've ever had it done. The personal attention at Yo-C is unmatched: She let me have my lunch while my color set, and as soon as I finished eating, she cleaned up after me and was over with a selection of magazines to choose from. She was engaging, but not overly talkative/annoying. She even gave a short head/neck massage during the shampoo/conditioning part of the haircut. I was just in town from LA for a few days, I cant remember my stylist's name but she was a sweetheart, very friendly and did an excellent job!I told her my hair needed thinning and cut a good few inches of. She did just what I said, and my hair has felt great since. I was so nervous to go to a new/random salon but my hair really really needed taming so I trusted the yelp reviews and went to Yo-C. This is the greatest new salon! I walked in and immediately felt relaxed. They gave me green tea and a really nice neck & shoulder massage. The shampoo was also great. Nothing was rushed... the entire experience felt very spa-like. Great music. Cool magazines. Yoshi-- the owner -- cut my hair and worked with me to figure out what would look best. He is a great guy (originally from Tokyo) who has worked in various salons and done styling for photoshoots. The salon itself is a beautiful space. Very serene. Great value. I've been to this salon to get a couple of haircuts and to get Japanese Straightening treatment in my bangs. Yoshi is very friendly and an interesting person,he speaks a bit of Spanish and Portuguese and has traveled the world so its always refreshing to talk to him.This is the Japanese Salon experience but more laid back and cool than the usual places, and the haircuts are precise and beautiful. I'm a guy but my hair is important to me. I also like to get a military cut but with a higher-end look. So I can't settle for any barber shop. Where they will give you the same staple haircut they will give every guy, no matter what you specify. My hair is also especially thick and full of cowlicks, so I just cant go to any barber, I need an expert. Nao has many years of technique experience in Japan. But she also has that American refinement. So Nao understands how to cut a mens hair and give it amazing texture and volume. Yoko did my hair and I showed her a photo of a straight cut I wanted. She did an excellent job executing what I wanted! I also have very damaged hair towards the bottom (bleach, dyed, permed) and she was able to trim most of it off with my hair still at my desired long length. I wanted to get a perm and Reiko told me she would be using a "gentle solution". I told her this is not my first time getting my hair permed and I never have hair damage issues but she insisted anyway. The perm lasted about a week. I was having my hair done for an engagement shoot. It was a very formal shoot, with me in a gown and my fiance in a suit. Yoshi asked me questions about what I wanted, asked to see pictures of the dress, and made some thoughtful suggestions. He ended up spending more than an hour doing my hair in a beautiful, intricate, romantic up-do, with lots of small plaits winding their way over my head. It was fabulous and stayed in place all day. This salon rocks! I have very fine naturally wavy hair and I come here like once a week for wash/blow outs. Yoshi has also cut and colored my hair and I have had blow outs from three other stylists - all amazing. They take their time and do exactly what the customer wants instead of rushing through like a lot of other places. Came here for a cut and definitely liked it. You're greeted by friendly faces when you walk in, and offered a beverage - 2 instant pluses! Beccan cut my hair and I thought she was great. She cut just the right amount off and added tons of layers and style. I made an appointment to get layers in my shoulder length hair. I had been to Yo-C a few years back as I was growing out my pixie cut and received many compliments as the haircut grew out. The stylist I had this most recent time, Paul K., did an amazing job on my layers, accentuating my naturally wavy hair and cutting it so it would be easy to style. He had a great personality and did not cut too much off, just the right amount, which is super important as one is trying to grow their hair long. I did lots of research to find a salon to do my hair. I live in upper state NY and I did not find anyone salon who offer Japanese hair straightening . I found Y-C and Yako did my hair, she was AMAZING she knew what she is doing. My hair took about 4 hrs to do. She accommodated me since I was driving 3 and 1/2 hrs. Except for the friendly staff, one of the worst hair salon experiences! Arrived promptly on time for a 6:45 haircut and was told I would have to wait 10 minutes because the hairdresser was just finishing up. She was actually just starting. She didn't see me till 7:30. I was late for dinner. But it got worse, she asked if she could use a razor on my hair and i have beautiful thick red hair. I said yes because I've done that before but she made my hair so thin it looks awful!!!! My hair will grow back but i will never go back! Very apologetic but that does not really cut it! read more

I have to say that my hair that NEVER grows truly feels like it has been growing more since I've been getting my haircut by Yoshi. My hair feels great. The color is still a huge accomplishment and I am overall happy with my services. Also this color has been amazing growing out in the sense that it goes perfectly with my natural hair color. Yo-C is a small salon thats very serene and peaceful. There are only 2 stations so I felt like I got a lot of personal attention. And they have one of the most comfortable shampoo stations ever. The complimentary 5 minute massage they give you in the beginning and the hair wash was absolutely divineeee and way better than Hairmates or Sei Tomoko. I'd go back for that experience alone. I'm really finnicky with my hair and don't get haircuts too often so I stuck with something simple and just got layers. I wasn't sure about it intially but it's been about a week and has defintley grown on me. Hairdressers have the tendency to get a scissor happy but Yoshi listened and only took off 2 inches and did a great job with giving me blended layers. The salon also has a great student deal for $50 and for that price, the experience was def. worth it. read more

Today I got a haircut and highlights with Shin and I have nothing but positive things to say about him! He listened to exactly what I wanted and gave me a great haircut with lots of long layers and some shorter bangs. As for color - he nailed that as well. I asked for blonde highlights but wanted them as natural looking as possible. He did a mix of 3 different blondes and it came out amazing. It still looks different but also extremely natural. He is especially sweet and very gentle - I love his manner. The salon itself is also beautifully basic and the entire staff was extremely accommodating. The stylist I've been going to forever went back to Japan so I've been trying different East Village Japanese salons in search of a new stylist. I was really excited to read all of the positive reviews about this place and got a cut with Reiko. She was really nice and was very thorough about finding out what I wanted. I was going for a sleek bop but somehow ended up with a flippy shoulder length cut with tons of layers, layers that stick out in all different directions. She took her time finding out what I wanted so I'm not sure what happened but I'm really disappointed. No wonder they give discounts. I will never go back to this place. read more

All the years I've been in New York, I've spent hundreds of dollars at John Delaria, Bumble & Bumble, Toni & Guy, Salon Ishi, Hairmate...etc., but no one can cut men's hair like Yoshi does. I love the haircut and hair color+perm I received from Yoshi. It's the best I have ever received in my life! he listened very carefully what i wanted, knew exactly what he was doing. l ast week, i went to get a haircut+color. and after that , i loved it so much i made another appointment for my perm. he spent more than a 45 min to cut my hair, and almost two hours to do my colors and highlights.
