First time in Leavenworth and not a fan of Brats, wasn't going to drink beer, didn't want to have burgers or soft pretzels. It was cold for this Southern California girl and I was looking for a hot bowl of yumminess to warm me up. After looking at reviews here on Yelp I chose Yodelin but what I did not notice or read in those reviews was that this restaurant specializes in homemade bone broth soups! I love the concept and I wish I had one of these near me that serves udon noodle soup in a variety of different bone broth. They also have other things on the menu but I was fixated on the broth. You can add different proteins to the soup if you like for an extra cost and I chose to add clams. Look for the picture below on how many clams they put in here! I lost count. I would say there was at least maybe three dozen clams, maybe more? Only a few of them were sandy which is not unusual for clams. I got the Yodeling which is their Curry fish bone broth and it was phenomenal! It was just the right amount of spice but not spicy and it served with kale, roasted red Peppers and Shitake mushrooms in the biggest bowl I think I've ever been served. The waitress and food servers were friendly and attentive . We stopped by after a short hike in the area. It was very empty midweek around 3pm. A nice change of pace from Leavenworth! They have a health focused, intriguing menu. We chose different soups and non alcoholic drinks. The halibut bone broth was a little strong for me on the fish taste- but it was still very good. Great flavors, balanced, with a smooth aftertaste. It had a sesame ginger broiled wild salmon (fish of the day), wild Oregon bay shrimp, peanuts, cucumber, radish, red cabbage, organic greens, cilantro, Thai basil, on a bed of organic brown rice, with a side of the house peanut sauce. Yummy! My wife had the Cloud Nine Rice Bowl. What a happy surprise to find in brat heaven of Leavenworth Wa. I went on recommendation of my son who had gone during a climbing trip in the Cascades. Yodelin is at one end of the pedestrian street in town. You'll go down a set of stairs to the front door and beautiful patio overlooking the river. Patio is dog friendly!! Food is truly unique in my usual world. Their logo is something about "using the whole fish", and that's an accurate assessment. They are famous for their fish broths and bowls using rice, veggies, noodles, broth and you guessed it ... fish fillets, simply baked to allow the flavors in the broths to shine through. Lots of vegan dishes here. If you are so inclined, you can order pints of their broths shipped anywhere in the lower 48. I started my meal with 8 oz of the halibut sipping broth as recommended by my server. She also recommended my main course, a Thai peanut bowl with salmon. They also had a nice Sauvignon Blanc wine that was great with my whole meal. Service is what you'd hope for at a place like this ... attentive, knowledgeable about the menu, and contributing to one's overall experience. I got all three, including a wonderful recommendation at the end to try a Mexican Chocolate vegan ice cream from Whistlepunk Ice Cream, a local company. Delicious. With the sipping broth appetizer, main entree, 2 glasses of wine, and the ice cream, tax, and tip, I was right around $100. This is one of the places I always stop when I'm in Leavenworth! From their comforting soups in the winter to the fresh salads in the summer, everything is so high quality and fresh and I always feel so energized and full when I leave. The food is definitely healthy, but still really flavorful and fresh so you don't feel like you are missing out. I crave their amazing food all the time and love when I get to visit! My coworker and I were working in the Wenatchee area for a project last Fall. And since Leavenworth was just 30 minutes away, we figured we'd make a weekly trek to check it out! I think my expectations were too high. Definitely make a reservation here during busy months as it does get crowded. You can still make reservations day of, but it's less of a hassle. I ordered the yodelin and added a soft boiled egg. For me, it had way too much lime juice. Even though it's a curry lime broth it was too overpowering. I live in Los Angeles and have never experienced bone broth/noodles like this in my life. My cousin brought me here while I was visiting for the holidays and I will very much be coming back to Leavenworth again just for this restaurant! I had a coconut broth and it was the perfect mix of sweet and savory. I've been trying so hard to find something comparable here in LA but nothing has come close. I wish I had taken a picture but I made the mistake of taking a bite immediately on arrival and it was game over from there! I am not a vegetarian at all, but as a foodie, I actually love vegetarian restaurants. Yodelin is no exception. A lot of cooking centers around using whatever meat as a crutch, sucking away creativity and limiting use of ingredients. Taking away that crutch forces you to invent better food. Ooohh, oh god, I can feel it coming. This 'bout to be a super long review with so many of my food pet peeves. *slow inhale/exhale* *shuffles note cards* Let me tell you a story. My dad and stepmom are professionals at finding good Chinese restaurants. If I'm visiting and we're going to hot pot, I just know it's gonna be one of the most bangin' spicy hot pot stops in the area. However, if we're in a situation where we want to find the best western food, they are at a loss. Therefore, it was up to meeeee to find something good in Leavenworth. "Something good" is a very vague standard, so if I had to identify something more specific: 1) Needs to be healthy. Food should actually have a wide assortment of vegetables. 2) Food needs to have more flavor. We can eat extremely spicy food and prefer a lot of seasoning and umami. Often, European restaurants that have a decent rating will still seem bland to us. Based on these criteria, I searched the Internet in this area and found a few top candidates. This is first up. I am happy to report that while it wasn't perfect, they were actually impressed. Our favorite was probably the salmon rice bowl. The salmon is saucy and soft, but not too soft, perfectly cooked. Despite the plethora of veggies, there's virtually no lettuce anywhere. Instead you've got arugula(?), kale mix, radish, red cabbage, cucumber, avocado, cilantro, etc., so much cilantro. God I love cilantro. I judge rice bowls by their overall harmony also, like a Japanese donburi. Even then, I feel like this passes. The eggs add extra necessary umami. The cucumbers add extra necessary moisture. Everything here fits nicely. In comparison, we felt like the noodle soups fell a tad short. The overall quality was excellent and the flavor of the broth was pointed in a good direction, but the strength of the umami was lacking. I get it though; they have to cook for their customer base. There's no way they could make their curry Yodelin broth as spicy as I'd want it and not have half of their customers running towards the restroom. Similarly, the chicken broth has a stronger umami than your average American chicken noodle soup, but.....we still found it to be weak. The chicken leg and cod we added were excellent though. The chicken was soft, juicy, and flavorful. The udon noodles themselves were fine. I love the basil in the banh mi. But.....I'd kind of rather just have a banh mi at a legit Vietnamese place with sliced meat and jalapeños. This bacon was good, but I don't feel like it fits this sandwich very well. The waiter recommended the broccoli appetizer, and we did not order that because it obviously sucks. Who wants to eat broccoli by itself? That's lame. I asked for the garlic bread to be served with the other food because eating bread by itself before eating everything else is also lame. Bread should be eaten with soup, pasta, etc. I dipped my garlic bread into the broth because that is objectively a better way to eat it. From the way it's presented, I feel like the restaurant half expects me to chomp through the bread by itself. This might sound psychotic, but I find that annoying. Aside from that, I also found it too hard and thin as well as being an unwieldy shape for garlic bread. I like having larger, softer garlic bread cut into smaller segments and don't really approve of this. Y'all are lucky I'm not subtracting a star for this sad bread. With all my complaints, it might seem strange that I'm still giving this five stars. But we did like it a lot. And....maybe I am being too nice again. But it's too late, I've already decided. I've lost count at the number of times I've been here -- but that's because it's one of a handful of noteworthy restaurants in Leavenworth and 100 percent worth returning to, time and again. This latest meal was with a big group (eight people) for a late lunch Sunday. We were promptly seated toward the back of the room and quickly greeted by a friendly server, who took our order for beverages and apps. Every time I visit, we order the same small plates (they're just so good!): the broccoli which comes charred in a garlic soy sauce (the tiny bits at the bottom of the bowl are my fave) and the potatoes, which have a choice of dipping sauces (we love truffle garlic and the curry). At .35 cents each, the dipping sauces are a steal (what can you buy for that price these days -- practically nothing!) The real standout here is the soup (it's a broth company, after all). I finally tried the Hollywood bowl, which comes with udon noodles, peanuts, kale and Thai basil in a vegan carrot ginger curry broth. I added tofu for some additional protein on this brisk January day. I've also had the Kiwanda rice bowl, which, as a vegetarian, I prefer just slightly, tho both dishes are excellent. Added bonus: the restaurant is very earth-conscious: all items are compostable, food is sustainably sourced, etc. (There's a note about this on the menu that I wish I snapped a photo of!) It's not a heated patio , but the temps tonight were okay for sitting outside. Our server was Adam. He approached our table with not even so much as a smile. He truly seemed bothered to be serving outside. If you don't want your patrons to sit outside then don't seat them outside. The yelp listing implies that Yodelin is a full bar, so I ordered a vodka tonic. Adam says we only have what's on their menu, which consists of a few drinks one including vodka, and I believe beer and wine. I'm sorry that is not a full bar if you have vodka but you don't have soda or tonic. So, I settled for a vodka drink with hibiscus that I couldn't even finish because it was definitely not my taste. My husband had a glass of wine. Adam returned to take our order which included a salmon rice bowl and the chicken bone broth with the roasted chicken. Again, the food definitely helped with this review score because we would truly give the food a 5, but the service was truly so poor that the 3 is warranted. Adam didn't even check on us once to see if we wanted another beverage or to even see if we were enjoying our meal. My husband had to go inside to find someone to get the check and pay it. It's one of the very few restaurants that doesn't serve what the rest of Leavenworth is serving (i.e. brats and schnitzel). We were a medium-sized group of 6 looking to eat dinner right before the live band started playing. The waiter told us he could sit us down at an outdoor table in the back if we could finish before the live band started playing, which was at 5, I think. He said there was a group coming at 5, that's why. We looked around and there were a couple of reserved tables, but there were also many tables open. We felt rushed the whole time we were dining there, AND the waiter was slow to take our order and give us our tab. Another star is knocked off because some of their bone broth soups were okay. A lot of folks are raving about their broth and to be honest, my husband was unimpressed with their Moonlight soup. He said it wasn't flavorful, it was bland. Moonlight is dairy-free. I ordered the Hollywood and thought it was good. Hollywood is gluten-free and vegan. The ingredients on the menu seem really appetizing and healthy, but I do think they could do better with their broths. They weren't salty, they just weren't anything to rave about. I've had better elsewhere. So, the prices probably reflect this destination town and the ingredients used. Parking is tough to find in all of Leavenworth. Interior is nice and has a pub feel to it. I'm glad my friend decided to order one of the soups and I ordered the sweet potato banh mi. We also ordered kids cheese plate. The sweet potato banh mi was good, but I wouldn't order it again. It reminded me of a salad on top of the best French bread. I subbed the chips for salad and regretted it as soon as I saw my dish because it was like I was eating two salads. It is a hardy plate. You definitely will be full when done. The sweet potato had great flavor. The yodelin soup was the superstar at the table. My friend did add salmon to it. They put a big chunk in there. It is a perfect meal for a cold day. It was tasty and have plenty of noodles and toppings. The portion is large. You can easily share it. The kids cheese plate with six dollars. We have been meaning to stop in here the past couple of years and just never get around to it. I originally thought it was a soup place, and they do make homemade broth, but they actually have a lot of nice lunch items. I enjoyed the large windows with natural lighting in the bar area and the beautiful plants in the windowsill. Our server was very attentive and helpful. We each decided to go with a rice bowl, and each tried one of the two chicken versions. The menu was labeled for gluten-free, and the server took extra precautions with letting the kitchen know I was celiac. The bowls came out in these huge silver mixing bowls, which is a whimsical presentation I enjoyed. It was plumb full of fresh veggies and herbs and a deliciously spiced chicken haunch. We had no trouble finishing our giant mixing bowls. They were just so good and fresh. The gf brownie I got for dessert was quite decadent as well. Came here as we needed a bit of a different meal than the brats and fries from the plethora of pubs in the area. Just on the outskirts of the main plaza, Yodelin is nothing to scoff at. Offering both indoor and outdoor seating, yes the outdoor patio is dog-friendly, the place was cute and had a nice ambiance about it. Wanting something a bit soupy and warm, my partner and I opted for the house made bone broth soup. We ended up with the Yodelin and Moonlight as it is. We shared an order of clams, which is why we didn't get any proteins or add-ons for the soup, our else I would recommend/consider it! The clams were a huge portions and also huge in size! More than plenty to share if in a group. The clams were served in a creamy and buttery sauce that made each one delicious. Highly recommend if you're into clams! My partner got the Yodelin which had a little kick to it. The taste of the curry halibut bone broth was delicious and definitely understand why it was the namesake of the restaurant. I got the Moonlight, which had a huge resemblance to a Japanese udon soup. The udon was cooked well and had a good spring to them and the kale and seaweed added a good balance to the broth. We visited Yodelin for our last group dinner to end our Leavenworth weekend since we had just about enough German food for the duration of our trip, and it was a solid spot. For a group of nine of us, we were fortunately able to get a large table on a Sunday night inside. However, outdoor seating is more popular and will be more difficult to get a space for a large group. Not sure if they take reservations, but worth looking into if you're coming with a gang. The menu at Yodelin had a good amount of food to choose from, with the seafood broth being the specialty here. With that said, there were soups, in addition to rice bowls, seafood entrees and other items. You can also take their famous seafood broth home as they sell this ready for takeout. I ordered the Yodelin soup, which was a halibut bone broth with coconut yellow curry, noodles, mushrooms, roasted red pepper, cilantro and kale. As I had hoped, I really liked the broth itself and could easily have this on its own as it was very flavorful. Everything else with the soup was a great complement to enjoy the meal. Everyone enjoyed their meals. Come here for the seafood soups and hang around over cocktails in a fun setting, especially for groups. Plus, knowing that this establishment does everything it can to be sustainable and environmentally-conscious is another reason to check out this spot.
