What's with these self-serve froyo joints that allow you to fill up your own big cup but only allow employees to fill the sample cups? First world gripe, I know. I'm not losing sleep over it but wish I understood the rationale for that practice. Other than that, the place is immaculate and welcoming with a large selection of great froyo (though not the greatest, whose crown IMO is held by Yogurtland) and toppings. Indoor seating (but geez, it's cold inside) and outdoor seating at inviting little bistro tables. If I lived in Lafayette, this place would be calling my name all summer long. What's that? We live in Lafayette, and LOVE this place. Yogurt Shack has 6-8 choices of fresh, self serve frozen yogurts every day. Their flavors run from regular choices (chocolate), to tarts, to seasonal. They have a toppings bar that would rival any salad bar - as there is nothing they don't offer. Candy, cookie dough, fresh fruit, syrups... you name it. The only thing I couldn't find were the crushed peanuts, but I am assuming that is due to so many kids having peanut allergies. The line can be daunting, but moves very fast. Tucked away in the same plaza as Whole Foods, Yogurt Shack seems to be THE family spot to go to on a Friday night. It's your standard self-serve fro yo spot with about 6 flavors. Where it really gets interesting is when you get to the toppings! By far, one of the most extensive selections I've seen at a fro-yo place (and I've seen a lot!) They had some obscure candies like pretzel m&m's, which is worth a star all by itself in my book. The toppings were also neat and the area around them clean As for the yogurt, I found the texture on par with some of the better yogurt places. I liked the fact that it didn't melt right away and didn't have an overly artificial after taste, like other places do. I ended up trying the coconut and red velvet, along with a bit of vanilla mixed in-and was happy with all my selections. It's 42 cents an ounce and although they list their flavors up on the website, I found that on July 5th, it wasn't accurate once we got there. Not a big deal, but if you've got your heart set on something, just be aware. Overall, Yogurt Shack is a cute little spot. If you're looking for an absolute disgrace of a froyo spot, then Yogurt Shack is for you. I called in at 7:45 to ask what time they were open til and the girl on the phone said they were only open until 8 so we wouldn't have enough time to get there. I went anyways. Upon arrival, I was astounded to learn that the girl on the phone lied to me and they in fact are open until 9. She clearly just didn't want me to come in so that she didn't have to do more work. Shows a lot about the character of the employees at this establishment. I proceeded to order a small cookies and cream yogurt with Oreo toppings. If the closing time disgrace wasn't enough, she eventually brought out my yogurt container which was only HALF full. My two friends who came with me received full cups of yogurt even though we all ordered the same thing. Keep in mind, she had no idea it was me who called previously. I used to come to yogurt shack all the time back in the day and was blessed with incredible customer service. Today, I am outraged at how disrespectful I was treated. I miss the old Yogurt Shack. Gotta love yogurt shack! They have about 8 different flavors with some that they rotate and some that are seasonal. Today they even had Dole Whip! I got Dole Whip, vanilla creme, and coconut since i wanted something a little lighter. Most of the flavors are fat free and some are sugar free, so you can feel a little less guilty about your dessert! They have a big selection of toppings and a lot of candy, but not as much fresh fruit as some other yogurt places. I honestly come here just for the cookie dough topping, it tastes like real cookie dough and isn't hard like a lot of cookie dough at their yogurt shops. Typically frozen yogurt is a weak substitution for good ice cream or gelato, it just tastes artificial and synthetically low-fat, non-dairy and generally not rite. Yogurt shack serves up quality 'I can't believe it's not awful' frozen yogurt. I had salted caramel, bday cake AND Oreo cookie. They charge you a flat rate now...$7 for a small...and they hardly fill the cup half way up. Also, they give minimal toppings. This wasn't a one time thing either! Yogurt Shack is a small East Bay chain of Fro-Yo places, in Danville, 2 in Concord, this one, and one in Davis near Sacramento. This Lafayette outlet opened about 6 weeks ago and has been doing a brisk summer business. Today it was 97 degrees, so a little Frozen Yogurt was called for to cool off. The place is decent size, the decor is bare bones and no frills. More rustic (er, Shacky?) rather than the Tutti Fruity colors of most Fro-Yo chains. And no clear plastic pink or lemon chairs, or all white Neo-Mod interiors. They line up their silver Fro-Yo machines side by side and you pick and pour. The Fro-Yo comes out thick and creamy, and less tart than a lot of popular chains. Its more like Dairy Queen or TCBY with more flavors. There is a large amount of candy toppings, all in bulk bins with little shovels, waiting for an owner to top off with them. The fresh fruit toppings were disappointing, as there were only 4, and one of those was candied Maraschino Cherres from the jar. They do have a frequent "Shack" card. The service is minimal but friendly, it's PYOFY, after all. The price is $0.38/ounce, and they do have compostable cups as well as regular cups, but all in one size. My cup cost $4.50! MUtiply that 200 times a day and you have a good business! It's average Fro-Yo in my opinion. Nothing to write home about, but acceptable enough to write Yelp about. read more

I am not a real fan of fro-yo and even less of a serve yourself and have a ton of toppings that you can put on after kids and others rifle through everything, This is the sere it yourself, put toppings on to your liking and pay by weight. The flavors run from sweet stuff to tart stuff and were just right for me to pick out for the fro-yo I was bringing to a friend recovering from surgery. Unlike the YS in Danville, this place is well maintained, clean (could be because it is new) and laid out decently. Fan of FroYo. Been going to CocoSwirl in PH for a year or so whenever I'm in the area. Now that Yogurt Shack is open, I'm tempted every day to grab some during my lunch or my last break. All of the workers are pretty cute girls and they are super friendly. I've already got my "shack" card too. Buy 10 yogurts and get one free. Sounds pretty awesome. I'm a fan of the Red Raspberry already. Tried the Fudgecicle today and it was awesome. reminded me slightly of a wendy's frosty (lafayette has NO wendy's).. frest fruit is a plus although they have plenty of junk and candy ;) Definitely will be coming here often! great atmosphere and you save mula and time... there's no ice cream places out here except for cold stone's... and I don't go there. My brother loves taking his daughter to this place. I think it is nice little place. I wish they had regular cones and not the huge-ass waffle cones. The toppings bar is stellar and I think you go through the line pretty quickly. Does seem like they don't have a lot of indoor seating given all the space, and we didn't feel like sitting outside in the cold. I did think they were a bit overpriced and that parking lot is busy! Not a bad place to go if you're craving fro-yo and live in the Lamorinda area. Their website lists the daily yogurt flavors for each location (I think there's a few scattered around), today I opted for vanilla and strawberry. Both were good but the strawberry was very, very sugary which leads me to believe that some of their flavors are sugared down. The red raspberry was very delicious as well. Didn't try the tart, but will next time. There are atleast 20 topping choices spread out for your picking pleasure. Most are aimed towards kids and/or adults with a big sweet tooth (Reeses Pieces, Coco Puffs, etc.) but there were some raspberries, strawberries, and cherries tucked away at the end as well. I think there was some shaved coconut in the fridge, but you have to ask for it. I'd recommend taking the vanilla and adding cheesecake bites and strawberries--like a little strawberry cheesecake, but healthier! As for the look of the place...who REALLY cares? It didn't ruin the flavor of the fro-yo, so I can't say I minded the shack-like look. They also have biodegradable cups if you're against using styrofoam. If you're REALLY green, they have waffle cones as well but you have to ask for one. The place is a little more expensive than Yogurtland and Cocoswirl, but seeing as how I live in Orinda, It's probably more financially wise to just hop down to Yogurt Shack in Lafayette than waste my gas money driving elsewhere. THIS is the place to go! I've been to many frozen yogurt places and this place takes the cake...or should I say, takes the frozen yogurt? The place is quite large with a lot of seating. I also REALLY appreciated that they had an employee standing by the frozen yogurt machines offering free samples of whatever flavors you wanted to try....I've never had that at any other frozen yogurt place I've been to. Very appreciated. FLAVORS: 5/5. I love the variety in flavors. Chocolate, peanut butter, cookies n' cream, dulce de leche, tart....and all sorts of other good flavors. Best variety in froyo flavors I've seen so far. TOPPINGS: 4.5/5. This place has a ton of toppings that could rival almost any place. Candy galore, cookies, sprinkles, nuts, you name it...they have it. Although, I was a bit surprised at the lack of variety in fruit toppings and syrups/sauces (maybe the sauces/syrups were hidden?)
