    Tonkatsu Curry
    Nick C.

A friend introduced me recently to this place that's been here in Elk Grove for years. It's a little bit hidden and small but the food here feels very homey. I had the gyoza pan fried, karage and curry tonkatsu. The gyoza was great, not very doughy and had good flavor. You can eat it without the sauce or dip it for more umami. The karaage was moist and seasoned well, but was a tad small portion wise. Sharing with a group of 3 we each got two pieces. The main dish for me, the tonkatsu curry, was excellent. Portion is decent and the curry had a very homey taste that would bring you nostalgia if you had it for your childhood. The tonkatsu was moist and had the fat portion still which melted in the mouth. I would def be doing that again. A friend got the chicken katsu curry and said the same about the flavor being great. Overall, a good place to try, run by Japanese mom and pop.

I always enjoy coming here. This restaurant is small but very cute and comfortable. We had the kitsune soba and o-toro sashimi. The hot buckwheat soba is refreshing and light weight. The o-toro was fresh and fatty! The staff were friendly.

Overall I think this is the best Japanese restaurant in Elk Grove. We haven't had all the menu items but the katsu curry, chirashi, chicken karage, grilled octopus, hamachi and other raw items are all very good. We went recently after a long hiatus and happy to say it is still as good as before. Don't know why it took us so long to go back. My family likes Japanese but it's rarely my first choice since many restaurants are just average, but I'll go to Yoshi every time.

I haven't been to this place in years! Still the best Japanese value place in town. Also, besides Mikuni's, is the only Japanese owned and operated restaurant in Elk Grove. They are not primarily a sushi place. The real treasure is in their Japanese comfort food. The katsu curry and don buris are where it's at. They do however make my favorite roll really well, the futomaki roll. Pickled mushrooms, egg, shrimp flakes, it's really underrated. The owners are very friendly. Don't expect fast, but enjoy your time. The only thing I don't like is the Dodgers decor. Yuck.

Absolutely love this mom and pop shop! There's about 10 tables and they are only open for several hours. Be prepared to wait for your food but I promise is worth it! It truly is a hidden gem. Pros: food is made fresh by the owners. I love the udon noodles. Every dish I've ordered has been authentic and amazing, it truly reminds me of Japan. Either the husband or wife come out and personally thank you for coming in and dining. Since there aren't many tables, it is pretty intimate and doesn't get very loud. Cons: I would love it if they had longer hours. The wait can be long. The first time we came here before 5:30 PM and we didn't leave until 7:30.

I had a really nice meal at Yoshi Japanese restaurant. The place was really cute and cozy and the staff were really friendly and super polite. The chirashi bowl had a lot of different types of fish and they were all pretty good. I especially liked the salmon and yellowtail. Some of the fish had 2 pieces and some had 1 piece. The salmon belly nigiri was also really good...I was satisfied. I also tried the chicken karaage and it was good and not too greasy. Yoshi Japanese Restaurant closes really early - 7:30pm! Although we arrived 10 minutes prior to closing, they were nice enough to let us dine in and didn't rush us. Our waitress was so polite, excellent customer service. The restaurant isn't easily visible from the street...you have to drive behind Walgreens to find it. Great hidden spot for delicious sushi.

As always the food is great. My daughter said. Is this the new sushi spot because it is way better than Mikunis. I agree! You really just feel so relaxed. I can't say it any other way. The food. The staff. The sweet family that owns it. I wish I could afford to come here every day. Just love everything about this beautiful place.

Get there early! Yoshi Japanese Restaurant in Elk Grove is absolutely worth the trip. This is a small, relaxing spot with fewer than 10 tables and a very small staff, but don't let that fool you. The sushi here is outstanding and well worth any wait. The intimate size actually adds to the calm, cozy atmosphere and makes it feel like a hidden gem. I ordered the sushi mix (6-piece chef's choice), a tuna roll, and started with the miso soup as an appetizer. The miso soup was very good, but the real standout was the tuna roll, easily the highlight of the meal. That said, all of the fish was incredibly fresh and very tasty, which really shows the care they put into their food. One small thing to note: the bathrooms are located in the back and require stepping outside to access them, which wasn't a big issue but worth mentioning. Overall, this is a must-visit for sushi lovers. Arrive early, be patient, and you'll be rewarded with some excellent sushi in a peaceful setting. Highly recommended.

    Croquette (Korokke)

It was a cold emotional heart felt December 4th, a beautiful full moon.. we stopped by Yoshi for dinner and let me start by saying, we were greeted with the most bright smiles. We ordered the Croquettes (Korokke), Chicken Udon, Salmon Belly, Torched Salmon Nigiri, Crunch Roll, and Miso Soup. The croquette came out so fresh, crispy, and warm. So flavorful and wrapped around my soul with each bite. The lemon and sauce complimented the korokke so well, so delightful. The chicken udon soup, my friend was eating it across me, and when she went to use the restroom, I took a few bites. And let me tell you, the broth was so flavorful, not too salty, not too bland. Quite warming for my soul, especially on a cold night like December 4th of 2025. The salmon belly and torched salmon nigiri's were very fresh and complimented well with the warm soups. Crunch Roll definitely threw me in for a surprise. Usually I anticipate the Shrimp tempura to be inside the roll, but it was on top, and again, the crunchiness was pristine. So yummy I even ate a few and forgot to take a picture beforehand, I just had to jump in ASAP. Lastly, the Miso soup was also warming for us. It definitely held my hand and kept me warm for the night and I promise, I slept very well and warm that night of December 4th, 2025. We will be back !

Sushi was fresh and tasty; staff were very kind and sweet; cozy, comforting ambiance. I've been to yoshi a couple times and the raw fish is always fresh. Today, I went all out for the uni, salmon, scallop, and toro nigiri. The rice was consistently well prepared and I consumed each one with a little soy sauce. uni: generously portioned, creamy, strongly savory with a slight saltiness and mild oceanic taste salmon: rich, melt-in-your mouth, lightly sweet, not too fishy scallop: sweet (sweeter than salmon) and buttery toro: rich, melt-in-your-mouth (slightly less oily than salmon), slight umami My friends and I stayed past closing but the staff were super nice and welcoming regardless. The little Japanese style cookies with the check is always a nice touch. Note: Sunday dinner time was not difficult to get a table, but it's always good to call ahead to reserve since it's a small restaurant with not a ton of seating and service can be a little slow (took about half an hour or so to get our food). Also, note that they are not actually open Sunday for lunch. The Yelp hours are wrong for this.

Amazing hole in the wall Japanese restaurant with genuine Japanese service where you feel like you're back in Japan. They bow and politely service you throughout. It's a mom and pop shop so it can take a bit for your order to arrive but the food is amazing. The tonkatsu curry was my favorite as the tonkatsu itself has a tender interior and a very crispy and flaky exterior. The buta bara don also has amazingly delicious pork mixed with egg. Very filling and juicy. We also really liked the ankimo (monkfish liver) which is very smooth like a pate where most other places don't quite have the same smooth buttery texture. Enjoyed all of the dishes here. Wish I lived closer!

Amazing quality sushi and nigiri! The owners are so nice. A really great, quality, authentic spot. We return again and again

Yoshi in Elk Grove nails the authentic izakaya vibe. The quirky decor, attentive, friendly and honest staff, and homey atmosphere make it feel like a slice of Japan. The food is fantastic. Top-quality sashimi and hearty Japanese kitchen dishes that pair perfectly with sake, beer, or tea. I love getting the charashi bowl which is worth every dollar for size and quality and the udon really feels home made. When it's busy, there's always a wait, but their time estimates are spot on, whether for dine-in or takeout. Out of all the izakaya-style spots in Sacramento County, Yoshi stands above the rest. Support this local gem for a truly authentic and delicious experience. 5/5!

We ordered the AYCE hot pot, which was really good and very filling. There was a tablet to order from at the table, but it only lets you choose 5 meats at a time, and then you have to wait 10 minutes before putting in the next order. We could each choose a broth so we got one tonkotsu and one house broth. They were both good, but I liked the house broth a bit more. Of the meats, I liked the prime rib eye the most. One order of prime rib eye comes with 3 slices of meat. We also enjoyed the pork belly, beef toro, and prime blade meat, but some of the meats were a bit fatty. They were out of brisket. The crispy soy garlic chicken wings, gyoza, and edamame were okay. We liked the sesame balls for dessert. They were out of ice cream because their freezer broke. In addition to the meats and items you can order through the tablet at your table, they also have a buffet bar with other hot pot items such as vegetables, mushrooms, noodles, and seafood. They had clams, mussels, crab, and shrimp. The restaurant was large with many large booths for large parties. The service was good, as in they delivered the ordered items promptly, but didn't engage, chat, or appear too friendly. For sauces, I mainly used the ponzu sauce. They didn't carry the Chinese bbq (satay) sauce, which I usually like with hot pot. Overall, we had a good dining experience because we liked the food and left pretty full.

For the bento box, I usually get the mixed tempura as one of my choices, but because i couldn't decide between one the protein, my two choices were Beef teriyaki and Chicken teriyaki. With the entrees and bento boxes, miso soup is served. It seems more watered down than it's been in the past, but it's still good, and a soothing starter. The beef and chicken teriyaki is served in thin strips and is nice and tender. The salad was a bit bitter, and their dressing is creamy and on the sweet side. We chose a couple of rolls with our meal. The I-5 roll and the Sacramento roll. They seemed almost the same, and was recommended because it was suppose to be the most similar to the California roll, but I think I'm going to stick with the Lobster roll the next time. There is also a specialty menu that looks really good!
