This place is a bit of a hidden gem. It's next to the much more popular 101 Noodle Express, but we definitely prefer this place over 101. Of the items we have tried, the beef roll was excellent. It wasn't overly oily like some other places. The beef was tender and it was coupled with the right amount of green onions and cilantro. It is one of our favorite beef rolls, and we like it better than the version at 101. The spicy wontons (红油抄手) was also delicious. It has more Szechuan influence in that there were some numbing spices, along with some sesame/peanut flavors. Unlike most other spicy wontons, there is much less vinegar, if any, in the ones here. The big mouth pocket was also good, though less flavorful than the beef roll and spicy wontons. Essentially, it is like a shao bing pocket stuffed with ground pork. The dish could have been improved with a bit more salt in the pork. Finally, we tried the green onion pancake which was seasoned perfectly and tasted of green onion, though it could have been more crispy. While it was delicious, it doesn't supplant our favorite green onion pancake at Tasty Noodle House. In general, the quality of their pastries/dough are great. You can definitely tell that they know what they are doing. If we are back in the area again, I think we would venture to try some of their noodle and dumpling options. ADDENDUM: On a subsequent trip, we tried the hand grasping cake which was crispy but was a bit too sweet for our taste. The Szechuan Dan Dan noodles had great chew and were obviously made in house, however we preferred the sauce from the spicy wontons. We ended up combining the sauce from the spicy wontons with the dan dan noodles, and they ended up being great. We also tried the pork stuffed pan cake which was not as good as the beef pies at the unfortunately now closed Beijing Pie House (oh, how we miss that place). The pastry portion of it was more like bread rather than a dumpling like at Beijing Pie House. The shrimp, pork and chives dumpling (which we got pan fried) was fine but a bit too fishy (shrimpy) for me. All in all, I think the items that we initially tried were the most successful: beef roll, spicy wontons, green onion pancakes and big mouth pocket. read more

Definitely don't come here STARVING though, the wait is ridiculously long and you will be cranky! -Pan Fried Baos: These were so light and fluffy! With a deliciously crunchy bottom. The meat was a bit on the tiny side but I'd definitely order these again in a heartbeat! -Boiled Corn and Pork Dumplings: Mmmmm so tasty! My favorite of the night! -Boiled Fish and Chive Dumplings: The fish was tender and flaky but compared to the corn and pork, these weren't anything to write home about. -Plain Soup Noodles: What is branch water? Does anyone know? You have the option of branch water or bone broth for soup base. You can choose between 3 types of noodles but when 1 option is handmade noodles, are you really going to choose the other ones? I thoroughly enjoyed the slight chewiness of the noodles and silky rich consistency of the bone broth. -Wonton Soup Shanghai Style (?): Not a fan, the greens in it gave it a smoky taste that I didn't like. -Beef Roll: SKIP! They may have been rushed in making this because the place started filling up, the dish was VERY oily. The pan fried baos that came out first were surprisingly light on grease. The beef in there was also full of gristle, which I LOVE but my dining companions don't. There was a lot of gristle to pick through. The roll was also missing cucumbers, not sure if that's a regional thing. They were out of XLB when I went but you can bet your sweet bippy I'll be back to try that soon! =d read more

The food was alright. We had the big mouth pancake, the dan dan noodles and the shang jian baos. The dan dan noodles were good. The texture of the noodle was perfectly thick and chewy. Sauce was a little light, but could be fixed with extra chili oil and a splash of soy sauce. The big mouth pancake was small for the price and lacked filling. The shang jian baos were alright, but the bun seemed a little soggy and the bottom was not fried as well as they could! Ordering system is a little strange, especially since it seems like time is wasted going between the screens. Overall, it was alright! Our party of 7 decided to have a bowling and dumplings night after reading about You Kitchen in LA Eater. What was supposed to be a "quick bite" before bowling turned into a 2 hour meal. I can appreciate that You Kitchen makes the food fresh after you order but their system needs a lot of improvement. It took FOREVER for our first dish to come out (over 45 min) and we came on a Monday night when the place was about 1/2 full. I can't imagine how long the wait gets on a busy weekend! Once the first dish came out the rest of our order didn't quickly follow. Out of the 2 hrs we were there, about 15 min was spent actually eating and the rest of the time was just more waiting between plates. The food was good, but not so delicious that it was worth the long wait. We ordered: -Spicy wonton appetizer / This was the first item to come out and it was my absolute favorite. The wonton skin was thin and perfectly cooked. The spicy sauce that the wontons sat in was so good we basically licked the bowl clean. -Pork & chive steamed buns / Tasty! -Szechuan dan dan (handmade) noodles / This dish was WAY too peanut-filled for my liking. It tasted like noodles tossed in peanut butter. I didn't finish my helping and I definitely wouldn't order it again. -Pork, shrimp, & chive steamed dumplings / We wanted to try one pan fried dumpling and one steamed dumpling so we ordered this steamed. While it was okay steamed, I think it would have been so much better pan fried. -Pan fried dumpling (I believe it was filled with beef & onion) / Really good! I am not a fan of pan fried dumplings because they usually taste too doughy, but they cooked these dumplings PERFECTLY. The outside was crispy while the inside was juicy & delicious. -Beef pocket / Good! Some other pros & cons include... -Con: We arrived at 6pm and they were already sold out of 4 menu items. (Including two items we were very excited to try: XLB and the green onion pancake.) By the end of our meal, one of the items that we had ordered also ended up being sold out. They don't have a large menu so being sold out of 5 items before 8pm on a Monday seems like poor planning. -Pro: You Kitchen is in a small plaza that has a ton of free parking. -Pro & Con: The owner was nice and helpful but very hard to understand. -Pro: A meal here is pretty cheap. Our bill was about $11/per person. Even though the food was good, we will not be coming back to You Kitchen because the wait was way too long. read more

Okay food is good BUT only if you are willing to wait...and not just a minutes but almost an hour! Been here a couple times and each time waited an hour before food served. Although the nice lady did say it's fresh made to order and they are extremely short staffed. Saw two tables leave and another man ranting at the long wait that he left his family to wait. My friend and I stopped by recently as I was really craving dumplings. We were deciding back and forth between going to the trusty 101 noodle express next door or taking the plunge and trying out a new place (that at the time had zero customers inside). Lucky for us, we gave You Kitchen a shot and I was very pleasantly surprised with our meal. You order at the electronic kiosk station when you first enter. It looks like there's a 2nd kiosk station towards the front of the restaurant. We were given a little explanation as to how to use the ordering machine but it's really quite self explanatory for people. We got the Shanghai wonton soup to start which totally brought back memories of the wonton soup my grandpa used to make for me in the kitchen. Simple, perfectly salty, homey, a little bit of egg and seaweed, and many small little pork-filled wontons (without shrimp!). It's so nice to have a simple traditional soup. Then we got another classic - the pork and cabbage dumplings which we opted to get boiled. Again, this also really brought me back to my Taiwanese roots of what I would always eat at home. So simple but executed nicely. I enjoyed the soy sauce mixture provided but you could always make your own too. To end the meal, I chose to try the fried chive turnovers. SO GOOD. These are like little Taiwanese/Chinese empanadas stuffed with a mixture of finely cut chive, scrambled eggs, and vermicelli noodles. When it came out, it was piping hot and freshly fried. The outside dough is a bit oily so it would be nice if they put it on a napkin to drain the oil out a little before serving but that's the only negative. Really, the outside was crispy and the inside stuffing was PERFECT and really filled the pocket! Bonus point that they did NOT include dried shrimp. A lot of places these days put in dried shrimp which just overtakes all the other flavors so I'm really happy that they did not! Overall, I'm really glad to have tried this place out. Obviously it's a place where you will eat a lot of carbs but that's to be expected in a restaurant like this if you just look at the menu before coming. Customer service was very sweet. She was very approachable and asked us to treat the restaurant like our own home. Her and another lady were in the kitchen cooking for us and making more dough. Lovely people. This was one of the most disappointing establishments I have ever eaten at. The Eater piece that got me interested to come here felt like it was a paid piece because it is NOT the next new dumpling place in SGV. My friend and I ordered quite a bit to try out things: steamed dumplings, beef noodle soup, green onion pancake, fried dumplings. Everything was extremely underwhelming. It took awhile for our food to come out and when asked for water, we didn't receive any until we asked twice. Then one of our dumplings was taking forever so we asked to cancel it, but they said it was cooking and it took another 15 minutes to come to our table. Very poor communication and service. The ordering through a machine is very popular nowadays, but not very efficient. I would skip this place. There are better dumpling places and 101 noodle is next door. read more

Surprised by the negative reviews this place is getting! My friends and I found the food to be absolutely delicious. We got the spicy cucumber appetizer, the xiao long bao (soup dumpling), the shaobing pockets filled with meat and some truly excellent shengjian bao. We were particularly blown away by the shengjian bao; they were absolutely amazing. My friends who had lived in China actually wondered whether their shengjian bao were better than the ones you typically get there. The decor is actually a bit nicer than most of the cheaper Chinese restaurants I've visited; there's some murals on the walls. Plus, there's plenty of parking outside. We were very satisfied with our experience. The one downside is that, yes, they're quite understaffed. The waitress seems to also be in charge of the cash register, and she was quite over-extenuated. If you don't speak Chinese, it also might be tough to communicate with her; however, if you can point at the menu items and know to bring your receipt up to the front to pay, I'm sure you'll be fine. I will be basing this off the food at this restaurant. I came here with my family a couple times since they opened to give it a try. At first I thought it was going to be the same food as the other restaurants around, but it has a slightly different taste. The food felt more homemade than machine cut like some of the other restaurants and tasted much better. My parents really like the food here so they come quite often when they are in town. They like the way it is made compared to some of the other similar types of foods. Only gripe is it does take a while for food to arrive, but it is worth it. read more

Everything we ordered was tasty. I liked how I could place and customize my order right at the kiosk. There are 2 ordering kiosks in the restaurant. One in the front and the other in the back. Service was friendly and the food came out in a timely manner even though each dumpling or bun order was handmade to order. The pan fried pickled veggie and pork dumplings were perfectly fried and not greasy. I also liked how they put them on special plates that have the grates on it to keep them crispy and/or grease runoff. But overall the food was not greasy and I'm a fan of this place. Xiao long bao was unimpressive. Of the order, only 1 still have soup inside. It was obviously over cooked. We also ordered the beef noodle soup, if you get it, the spicy is more of a medium. Noodle was also overcooked and a bit soggy. Our last order was the pan fried buns which after 40 mins of waiting, they told me it was burnt. Staff was trying to explain they make it fresh and that's why it takes so long. Owner should really put a note that it takes so long to make, if I had known I would not have ordered it. Read the Eater LA feature and decided to try this place out. Excellent food, good value and they make it fresh to order, be patient and come early. The ordering is cool at an automated machine that lets you see what you're going to order. Their fillings are great and some different ones like pumpkin and shrimp. I loved the pocket dish filled with minced pork and veggies as well as the pan fried beef and cabbage dumplings. The XLB is good, not my fave but still good. I did not like the mango milk smoothie, tasted awful. Skip that one. The service is okay, the waitresses are very sweet and friendly. You order on a kiosk before you sit down and after you finished your meal you had to go back to the kiosk to pay. I thought it was a little confusing, feels like it would have be a great idea in theory, but needs more work. My boyfriend and I ordered xiao long bao, spicy wonton, and the big mouth meat pocket. This cafe's food comes closest, if not a bit better than Din Tai Fung. It's a small cafe. You order on the kiosk, pick your table to seat at, pay for your food and your food is brought to your table. There is no waiter or waitress. If they run out of the food you ordered, someone from the kitchen comes out and tells you. They do give suggestion of what to substitute for what they do not have. The day we went, service was extremely slow. Good thing we had the afternoon free. What may have been 45 minutes to place the order and eat, we were there for an hour and half. There seemed to be only 3 persons in the kitchen. Food is made as you order. One lady was wrapping the dumplings. Another was cooking the dumplings and the third one was pan frying. You Kitchen is a new restaurant that opened up a store down from 101 Noodle House (not too sure why because they have a pretty similar menu) The zhajiang noodles were chewy and had the right amount of sauce, so it wasn't overwhelmingly salty. I would come back for these! Pork and cabbage dumplings and beef roll were alright. I didn't really prefer the kiosk system they have for self serving because it was a little confusing. You Kitchen has Xiao long bao's comparable to Din Tai Fung and the best steamed buns I've ever eaten, just to name a few of their superb qualities. Came here after reading the LA Times article. We were the only customers the whole time we were there. Ordering from the kiosk when you first walk in was interesting. We hardly saw the waitress except when she brought out our food. She was pleasant though. The scallion pancake was pretty good and so was the xlb. However the pan fried dumplings was very doughy and barely had any meat. I don't think we will come back and don't see how they can compete with 101 Noodle express just two doors down. read more
