TERRIBLE CUSTOMER SERVICE. I had the WORST experience ever. You already know things are headed downhill when the people at the gate have an uppity attitude and treat you like a nuisance. It's a red flag for things to come. I had a scheduled appointment for today, 7/28 at 0815, and when I arrived, my name wasn't on the reserved list. So therefore, I had to sign in on the wait list. However, I voiced my concern to the man at the desk, explaining that I had an email stating I had a reservation and he said, "No, you don't. If you had, you'd be on the list." Obviously, I can't reason with this kind of mindset. I was there, two hours, waiting patiently. I then approached a woman worker who verified that there was a mistake, but told me, "You gotta hold on" and she proceeded with other customers. Finally, my friend called reservations, they verified THEIR mistake, and they called over to the dock for their workers to prioritize me. I should also mention that the man worker yelled at a customer. Another customer came in with my same problem and was told the exact same thing. I work in the medical field and we always treat people with compassion and concern. If patients don't understand, we take time to explain and help them solve problems. I believe this epitomizes customer service. Regardless of what industry employees are in, they need to treat people right. Management needs to do an intervention or be fired for allowing this level of service to be so ugly and go unchecked. I will never recommend this business to anyone until they clean up these employees' customer service. read more

Took 4 tries to pick up a shipment of logs, because of not being open when they were supposed to be. The third time, my contractor was yelled at for trying to unwrap the logs to load onto his truck and told he had to take the whole pallet, which wouldn't fit. This was after he was yelled at and told to wait in his truck ACROSS THE STREET because they were allowing only one car in at a time. For the 4th try, I had to hire someone with a larger truck to take the pallet. All this because of Corona virus concerns, after the logs had been outside in the sun and wind for 13 days! However, we have heard awful stories of shipping companies in HI being notoriously difficult to work with. We had the completely opposite experience with a reservations agent named Annette on Oahu. She could not have been more responsive, kind, empathetic, helpful and was critical to assisting us in more than one way. Because of Annette, we will be sure to recommend anyone to use this company, if they're lucky enough to get her as their agent. We just bought a condo on Molokai and are using Young Brothers to ship our vehicle there from Honolulu. There's a lot of information to digest and I had so many questions for their customer service team, especially because I'm located in California and had to do it all remotely. They were WONDERFUL! Especially Heather, who answered all of my questions. Their response was always prompt, extremely pleasant and helpful. Young Brothers is the only barge operator from Honolulu but they certainly act as though they want and need to impress, regardless of not having competition. Don't get me wrong - it's very expensive - but they know how to treat their customers! I'm happy to recommend them! read more

Now today at 9:06am is the worst day coming to YB. I'm a regular customer and for some reason they changed the schedule where they only accept mix containers Tuesday, Wednesday and Friday and apparently this is causing a huge backlog. There were like 30 cars in front of me and now looks like there's another 50 in back. It's now 10:49am and still there is 8 cars in front of me. Shipping from kawaihae harbor was easy, and almost pleasant. Picking up in Honolulu is an absolute nightmare. We've been waiting for over 3 hours, and we're still 5 vehicles away from being admitted to our container. We have several thousand dollars in cabinetry and inventory, next time I'll just mail the inventory with the US Post office, and throw the cabinets in the dump. What an absolute waste of time. I had to drop off a truck today to ship to Hilo. The service I received from ladies at the drop off area was excellent. All the paperwork, registration, insurance and certificate of ownership was all in order and current. Dont forget to make an appointment if your shipping your car. You will guarantee your spot on the barge. If not, its only if they have space available. The drop off area after you enter the main gate (you will need your ID to enter) you just have follow the green arrow on the road all the way to the right on the ewa side. You will see the vehicle drop off sign. Its the opposite to exit FYI: Straddlers and forklifts have the right of way so keep your eyes open. read more

Young Brother's (YB) is the BEST for shipping inter-island. Recently moved to Kaua'i from O'ahu. Cost was under $1,100 to ship my SUV and belongings. 20 ft. container - $675 (including taxes, etc.), large SUV (5,710 lbs) - $366 (including taxes, etc.). The other shipping company I checked with was exponentially more expensive ($1,000 not including taxes and other fees simply to ship my SUV...) While the price alone is enough for a high-review-rating, it is the customer service that I truly appreciated. When I showed up to meet the movers to unload my belongings and drop my car, the YB staff had already showed them where to go and had them loading my belongings into my container. I was a bit scattered (to say the least), and the YB staff was so kind, answering all my questions, helping me to fill-out the required paperwork, and advising ETA for my car and belongings in Kaua'i. One of the best parts was that I had no clue I needed a lock for my container, so they just sealed it at Honolulu. I did not have time to clean out my car (reference the "scattered" in the previous paragraph), and had money and other items in the front, middle, and back of my car. NOT ONE THING WAS MISSING! What an incredible statement as to the true Aloha, honesty, and integrity of an organization. When picking up my car and belongings at Nawiliwili, the YB staff, again, was so kind and helpful. What could have been a really stressful situation (again, still scattered) was made so fun and easy that a lot of laughter was shared, and much Aloha. I shipped my car over from Maui to Oahu. It was a quick process. I set an appointment for drop off and pick it up when I arrive. You need a lot of paperwork such as a registration of the car and making sure you show proof that the car is yours. You also got to make sure your car is clean. They are precise about checking your car for prior damages. I think I paid about $300 for my Honda Accord. Picking it up at Oahu was easy. You show your i.d. go get onto the location. Drive up to get stand alone buildings. Go in and PULL A TICKET. I didn't know and me the guy stood around only to realize there's a ticket machine lol. I had a pick up the other guy dropped off. It was quick to get my car. Exit the same way you came in. read more

This is the most disorganised transportation company I have had to deal with and I don't say this lightly. They ask you to come in 15 minutes earlier than your appointment but aren't even inside for a half an hour (mind you this is at noon). When my appointment time arrives they are hooking up people that are on the non-appointment sign in sheet instead of catching up to those who have appointments (which there was anther person ahead of me). After waiting an hour past my appointment they finally get to me, even though there was another worker who could have helped them get them back on track. I'm only give them two stars because the cashier lady was very pleasant and professional. They are so rude and off-putting in their emails. I wish I did not have to give them business! They are unclear and have been contacting me with one sentence replies that are extremely off-putting. We shipped my wife's mini cooper from Oahu to Maui. The whole experience was fantastic. To start, the customer service is great. Every one of the ladies I dealt with was friendly, professional, and motivated. There was only one lady working the check-in. So when I drew my number there were several people in front of me. I figured I was in for a long wait. She was all business and I was mission complete in about 20 minutes even with the line. I dropped the car off on a Thursday and my wife picked it up Friday around 2 o'clock in the afternoon. The only issue I had was initially finding the building to ship from, if only I listened to the directions I got at the gate. Great customer service. Great experience. On Aug 19 I dropped my Toyota Tacome truck at Young Bros to ship to Molokai where I live. After numerous sailings, and no information from clerk at kaunakaka, or customer service Oahu, I was informed on 9/4 that the truck had been stolen off your property. My son found the truck on a stolen auto website. it had been taken to Nanakuli and stripped to the shell. Now Nalani Say, requests I pay for freight charges, BEFORE I can file a claim. No rental car has been offered by her. I have contacted your parent company, Saltchuk, and filed an ethics violation claim. This is criminal negligence, and i believe an inside job. read more

The line to ship your loose cargo can sometimes get to a 90 minute wait. I feel like they should have more people on the job! There is often only one or two people checking in and they have to do it one at a time. Count the cars in front of you and give it 15 to 20 minutes each! read more

OMG .......NEVER AGAIN. I retired from the Army and moved from Oahu to the Big Island. We have 3 cars but the Army only pays to ship 1. The 2 we paid to ship went via Pasha (SUPER!!!), however, the government is contracted with Young Brothers. My BRAND NEW 2013 Mazda was sent via barge, exposed to sea water. I gotta say, I'm one of those guys that expected mediocre service considering Young Brothers kind of monopolizes the market on car shipping interisland. But man did I assume wrong. I shipped my car twice within a 2 month span. And on both cases both Maui and Oahu's service was awesome. I wish I had taken the names of both the women on Maui and Oahu that helped me. I was lost on both occassions and they were understanding, patient, and helpful without making me feel like the idiot I was (considering I've used young brothers 4 times prior and still couldn't remember the process of what I was suppossed to do). Even the guys who were helping around the lot we're super helpful in making sure that I went thru the right line in the office and that I got out of that confusing pier ok. Wow I guess the rental car companies took up all the spots from locals moving cars between islands. No love for locals working off island. This is absolutely the worst company to deal with. They were rude when you call to make a reservation to ship your car. They tell us its first come first serve to ship so We arrive to ship our car and to wait two hours in their waiting area to check in. The work extremely slow and inefficient. I recommend arriving early on your ship day and try to be first. They are unapologetic for their slow process. This is an extreme example were competition would improve customer service. Wow. I just shipped my OC-1 (one man outrigger canoe) from Nawiliwili, Kauai to Honolulu, Oahu. Every single person I had contact with in Young Brothers was super nice and helpful. You don't find that kind of environment very often. From my first phone call to Nawiliwila, to the dock hands helping load the boat, to the clerks in Honolulu, to the dock hands in Honolulu, and the security in Honolulu. All were helpful, and nice. The only reason I have it two stars was because the people were so nice. We needed to make two runs from makaha to waikamilo before 1:30, so we left ourselves plenty of time. We got there at ten then proceeded to wait three full hours in line just to access the container. A massively slow and inefficient process. We were told that they were short-handed, but I saw a lot of purple cruising by doing a lot of nothing. There Was absolutely no warning on wait-time. As a result, my friend's moving cost was tripled. He has to ship the motorcycle separately because it took us way past the time reserved for loading, and the only reason he paid for the 20 foot container was to fit the motorcycle. He also had to pay for an extra day on the moving van. I'm sure they don't mind, with their union checks and the monopoly they have on inter-island freight. Why does it take hours to pick up a small shipment from the dock? I went around 11am to pick up a single box from the dock and had to wait in a line of trucks for nearly two hours just to pick it up. The friendly forklift driver I was talking to said the wait and long lines is how it is every day. Really? There's got to be a better way. read more
