My wife and I were spending a week in the Dublin/Pleasanton area recently, and during that span we went to Young Dong Tofu House twice. It's in a strip mall area with a bunch of different businesses and restaurants. Both times we went it was pretty full but we were able to get seated right away. The tofu soups are good sized, flavorful and come out piping hot off the stove. The banchan/side dishes are great. I really enjoyed the BBQ rib (beef short rib) stonepot bibimbop. If you let it sit for a while the rice crisps at the bottom in the way that new school rice cookers don't anymore. Portion sizes are good relative to the price, the food came out quickly and the service was friendly. In an area with a lot of different food options, we enjoyed this place enough to go twice in one week. read more

I came back with my boys again this past Th as they wanted tofu pot again. I decided to try something new, the seafood pancake, but it was a bit disappointing as the seafood pancake was not crunchy, but soggy. I won't get the seafood pancake next time, will stick with my usual tofu pot soup. Service was fine. No side dish fish when you don't order an entree, I didn't get one. Only my boys got the side dish fish this time, the fish was a bit more soggy too this time as I was informed. I am wondering if we got a batch that was left out for awhile like the seafood pancake. We came on a Th night around 6pm. My experience this time was not good as I had a stomachache after eating here and had to go use the restroom after leaving. Finally made it back here and it did not disappoint. We ordered the seafood pancake, and assorted tofu soup, and everything was delicious. I love the variety of banchan they serve, and the pancake was the perfect dish to share. The soondubu was packed with flavor, and I had to pair it with a Terra beer--great combo. It can get really busy during peak hours, but we came for an early lunch and only had a short wait. That just shows how popular this place is. There were plenty of regulars dining in, including my friend who brought me. If you live in the Tri-Valley, you don't have to drive far for great soondubu. There are definitely more Korean restaurants popping up around here these days, but this spot has been an OG since I was a kid, and it's still one of my favorites. read more

I was craving soondubu for lunch, so my boyfriend and I came here. We initially wanted to go to Go Goong, but we didn't realize it was closed. Safe to say that Young Dong met our expectations! After a long memorial day weekend drive up from LA to Dublin for a wedding, it was nice to see a familiar name in a place we did not expect. We have a lot of Young Dong restaurants in So Cal and they are pretty well known as a go to spot for some good tofu soup. This place was no different and even squeezed us in a half hour before closing time. The food was solid with 8 different banchan and even a fried fish. Most places down in so cal no longer serve their tofu with a fish so that was a nice and welcome surprise. Maybe it was because we were hungry after a long drive but I found the food to be solid here. My wife commented on her mushroom tofu soup and how they used a wide array of mushrooms and not just button mushrooms which was a win for her. Lastly, the space was clean and well lit and it seemed like there were a lot of regulars there. A solid spot and would be on our rotation if we lived in the area and craved some sundubu. read more

The problem with this place is one of the Korean. Server old lady. Clearly racist. Unfairly treats their guest. Checks in and refills side dishes and water for Korean guest and not others. There's two ladies at this place one has tied up hair and she's always busy and overworked and the other lady with curly hair sucks real bad. Otherwise food is ok. I work in Dublin, and this is one of my go to lunch spots. The vibe is very chill, service and quality here is always top notch and the food never misses. Their lunch special is great as well. I have been to Young Dong Tofu House many times. I usually go for one of the Hot Stome Bowl Bibimbab choices. On the latest trip, I tried the B.B.Q. Rib with Cold Noodle ($35.99). The B.B.Q. Rib is Kalbi beef flanken-cut short ribs. They were hot and came separate from the cold noodles. Of course, there was a banchan assortment which was very satisfying. The service has always been good. The tofu soup at this location is probably the tastiest AROUND THIS AREA. I'm from Orange County so the bar is pretty high for me. Soon doo boo is my favorite food in the whole word so I find myself still coming back here despite the terrible service. I only give three stars generously because I keep coming back. One time, my friend, her very well behaved toddler and I came here and must have ordered almost $100 worth of food. We weren't there that long and had just finished eating, but people were waiting so the waitress, in the midst of rushing us out and telling us to leave because people were waiting, spilled a bunch of juice from the side dishes all over the front of my shirt and started apologizing and then proceeded to try to wipe it off me, greatly invading any sense of personal space. Then after all that, she told us to leave again. I was so incredulous I didn't return for a very long time. Another time I called ahead 15 minutes to ask if there was space for about 8 of us (we live 15 min away). She said she would make space for us in the back outside. When we arrived promptly in exactly 15 minutes, she told us that actually the owner decided to invite his family and that space wasn't available. If anyone could PLEASE PLEAAAASE open a tofu soup place in this area that tastes decent and has decent service, I would be the happiest person in the world and a true regular who would bring all friends there all the time. read more

I used to be a long time customer here and have introduced many friends to this place. However my last trip here will be my last. the main woman argued with me over the number of banchan refills we got. they have a policy of two refills only. But actually another server took our banchan plates and forgot to come back with refills so the woman misinterpreted it as we got our 2nd refill. The fact that she's counting refills and came to our table to tell us no refills because we've already maxed out without giving us benefit of the doubt is just bad customer service. It's been a while since I came back to Young Dong Tofu House. It's fairly consistent. I like the variety of banchan they give - the potatoes are my favorite so I always ordered seconds. The fish banchan is unique and while I don't like fish with bones my friend was happy to have it all to himself. Service is quite good and are good about refilling the tea after you ask once. The dol sot bibimbap does not have a lot of rice other than the layer at the bottom but if you leave it alone it will crisp up which is the essential element of clay pot. We popped into Young Dong Tofu House on a cold evening, thinking it was a good spot for some soup. It's tucked away into a corner of a strip mall, it would be very easy to miss. It's definitely got the mom and pop/hole in the wall kind of vibe- nothing fancy here. But the dining room was pretty busy which is always a good thing since it is usually a good indicator the food is decent. We got the seafood pancake and japchae to share and I got soondubu for myself. The soondubu was solid, filling and warmed me up, just what I was expecting. The japchae was good as well and what I'd expect. I was a little disappointed in the seafood pancake as it seemed pretty doughy and a bit oily/greasy compared to other ones I've had. We dropped in around 6:30pm on a Sunday and it was busy. But we didn't have to wait long for a table of 4. Food came out at a good pace. But when we asked if we can get refills on some of the side dishes, the waitress was like not all of them. Geez so stingy. But we told her we only wanted certain items. Don't get why some places are stingy with the side dishes. It's not like we will waste the food and not eat it all. It's a consistent, no-frills, homey Korean restaurant that serves all of the classics. Service is kind and attentive, and the restaurant is always clean. It's also always busy, which is always a great sign. Last night, my family and I came here to celebrate a birthday, and the waitress (I didn't get her name, but she is always working!) was SO sweet. She made us feel so special, kept the birthday cake in the fridge until the end of the meal, and even sang happy birthday and took photos for us. It was the best and really made me appreciate the importance of kindness and community. Of course, the food was delicious! That goes without saying! Lunch prices for tofu soup now at $18.99. Disappointed to find only tiny morsels of frozen seafood in my soup. The frozen clams even had sand in them so watch out for your teeth. After paying as I was finishing up my rice this older Korean lady with curly hair was so rude to approach me and in a scolding tone said "we're closed." As in saying we were kicked out! I was merely finishing up food I've already paid for, not placing a new order or asking for any drinks or anything. If she wanted to clean up our table she could ask politely " May I take your dishes?" Her attitude was unacceptable especially since it was just under an hour of us being seated. I have been coming to this restaurant for years. I always order one of their Hot Stone Bowl Bibimbabs. A few days ago, I ordered the BBQ Rib Hot Stone Bowl Bibimbab. It was good; the meat was tender to eat and very flavorful. (Definitely a must!). I usually order the hot stone bibimbabs because I like the crispy crunchy rice at the bottom of the clay pot. This time, my rice didn't turn crispy, but usually it does. For the banchan, I like the number of dishes they give, and I enjoy eating all of them. My favorite banchan they serve is the potatoes in the honey. They make it the best. I haven't found another restaurant that could make it better. I'm not sure why it took me so many years to finally give this place a try and I'm I'm glad I did. I came here for lunch with my mom.
