Quick and dirty summary: responsive, quick, professional, and fairly priced. Terry will definitely be the first call I make in the future if I have another plumbing issue. On a recent Saturday we had the unpleasant surprise of a fair amount of water in our basement bedroom. We thought we figured out that the source of the water was a backed up sump pump. Called Your Helpful Plumber and Terry answered on the first ring. He was professional on the phone and provided an estimate for various repairs associated with the sump pump. Terry was able to be on site within 30 minutes and quickly gave us the bad news that the issue was not a sump pump but rather a more complicated (and serious) sewage ejector pump. Terry quickly took apart the system to figure out if the pump needed to be replaced or just repaired. I appreciated their efforts to keep a dirty job as clean as possible by spreading a tarp out on their work area. Unfortunately, the pump could not be repaired and had to be replaced - but I also appreciated Terry allowing me to see for myself that the pump needed to be replaced. Terry was also very professional about providing us with an estimate for the work before he took the whole system apart. I thought the estimate was a fair price - although I did not do any comparison shopping and the work certainly had to be done. Terry quickly went to buy the replacement pump and then returned and completed the task. Terry even went through the effort of cleaning the area thoroughly when the job was finished. After the work was done, Terry also agreed to give me a discount from Yelp that I had not asked about - which was much appreciated as the repair was not inexpensive (although, again, I think the price was fair). Terry provides a four year guarantee on parts and labor and even called the next day to confirm that the system was still functioning correctly. Great service all around. The only minor blemish I'd give them is that they tracked a bit of dirt onto our carpet - but I don't think you can expect anyone to be perfect, especially with all the snow and ice outside and the need to perform such a dirty job. read more

I called Your Helpful Plumber because both of our upstairs showers were broken. There was a leak in one of the showers, which had seeped into the ceiling of my office, and the other shower had no water pressure. The plumber arrived within 90 minutes of my call (as promised), quickly identified the problems with both showers, fixed the water pressure issue within an hour. They told me the other shower simply needed to be re-caulked, which was something I was able to do myself. They didn't pressure or try to upsell me to do the caulking job, which was nice. We had emergency leak at our tenants apartment. It was midweek and after 5pm so i was really worried that i was going to have to wait for someone to come out. We found this plumber through a google search and they were willing to come out the same day. It was definitely more but again i can appreciate someone coming out the same day and he was there in an hour. Had our sump pump checked initially for possible malfunction since i had seepage issue (which never occurred since we bought the house) last Monday during the extreme heavy rain-- turned out sump pump is not working and what we heard running was the ejector pit. Gas was cut off due to a minor gas leak during winter. All in all, they got the job done & the gas was turned back on. However.... Over the phone I was quoted $4-500 - about $250 just to do a pressure test, and then the rest for repairs. The guy & his young son came out on a Sunday or Saturday afternoon. After looking at where the (4) leaks were (pipes were all easily accessed, no walls covering them), he says he needs $800 and it _has_ to be in cash. After agreeing (since we had no heat or hot water & it was 20-30 degrees outside), he says he has to run to Home Depot. He comes back 3 hours later with a couple of pipes (what plumber doesn't already have some pipe in the truck?). My guess is he & his son were probably out eating dinner. He's finished in about an hour. Problem is resolved. Gave him the cash. Said he would email a receipt. I'm sure everyone knows this story ends with him not sending a receipt after repeated requests & basically ignoring me once he had the cash. read more

On Saturday May 31 we came home to a leak in our bathroom ceiling. My upstairs neighbor was not home, but we had access to his unit. I went up Sunday morning and couldn't see signs of a problem. Sunday morning we called the helpful plumber to come assess the situation. Based on my past experience I was expecting to need to cut the ceiling open, assuming it was an issue with the plumbing in between floor. When the plumber arrived (on Sunday at the time they told us) he investigate several possibility causes of the leak without making any holes. On a hunch(there was no visible water) we pulled out the fridge and found the source of the problem. He quickly made the repair and took care of a couple other minor maintenance issue we discovered along the way. We were thrilled to not have to cut the ceiling and need drywall repairs. As I was cleaning up the kitchen tonight, water started pouring out from under my kitchen sink cabinet. Everything under it was soaked. I cleaned everything up and put a giant bucket under the sink after looking up into where the faucet goes into the countertop (because when I turned the water on that's where it seemed to be coming from). I couldn't figure out exactly where the leak was, and knowing the morning routine would be a pain without a leak free faucet, I scoured Yelp for a good plumber. Your helpful plumber popped up. The reviews looked great and I gave them a call. Terry, the owner, answered. I described the issue. He told me to grab a wrench, and patiently waited for me to find one. Then he told me to pull the spray nozzle all the way out and told me to tighten the nut on the end of the nozzle. Voila, fixed. Yeah-I know. I'm am really not handy. However, less scrupulous people would have charged me $200 to come out here and tighten that nut instead of help me fix it over the phone and charge me nothing. I found this company on Yelp and I'm very glad I did! I'm a new homeowner and have not needed much work done to date. My toilet had not been flushing and then my bathroom sink had an extremely slow drain. I finally got fed up and yelped plumbers in the area. They came the same day!!! Atrocious. Our project involved installing a new gas line into our third floor unit, and was described as simple plumbing by his first plumber who did a walk through, and measured the job out in early April. I phoned them, and before the end of the day, I was talking with and walking with Steve, and he spent a good hour here promising me he was excited to get the job done, and this was his sort of work which he took pride in doing. He wanted an assistant to help on some of it, to get the job out of the way quicker and basically to hold a ladder. I routinely climb around on ladders for work, and get that. Great. We go to make our down payment to get the job going. I am told they cannot process credit cards, and will not be able to for a week. We finally relinquish to get things going and get a date back in April to finish. I forget why Steve could not actually finish. But he tried to show up. Twice. The second time, It was going to be Terry, and him doing it. Day of happens, and I have a text from Steve asking if I had heard from Terry. Two no shows, day of. I have also now set a day aside from my work to be there to give them access to the parts of the building they need open. I also find out this was Steve's last job with Terry Bateman, and his company, and I would now need a new plumber to come in to finish this. They also no show on me, and I have to reschedule, and they also no show on my partner while I am out of town. After she took a personal day. They have measured the job three times now, and have not shown up and blown off a promised eta to work four times. Again. They cannot finish the job when it comes to being assigned to do it. Even after over the several site visits, he and the people he was contracting out to do this job they insisted it would not be a problem. Two holes. A few corners to turn. A ladder to climb for some length to drop, and it would take them about a day and change to finish. Two months later. Terry was now proposing to return our deposit. We agree this is the best way to end our time. HE DID NOT ACTUALLY SEND IT. He lied. Rather than dishing about what a terrible I worked it out that Terry would finish this job personally, and that we would go on our way with my not having to divulge in what a terrible person to work with he actually is where the rubber meets the road in finishing up. We worked out what times would work, and what was going on. Terry also promised me he would personally show up on time; June 13th, 2017 to finish this job he accepted back in April, and has a down payment to finish and he is now over two hours late, and he is not answering his texts, nor his phone. I recommend you avoiding Your Helpful Plumber like a disease. read more

I've now used Your Helpful Plumber twice for work at a condo I own in Chicago. The first time, about 6 months ago, they resolved an emergency gas leak situation resulting from the incompetence of another plumber who attempted to install a new water heater (I shut of the gas to the water heater, of course). Terry was able to send someone out within an hour late in the evening, who fixed the gas leak, and resolved an issue with the electronic ignitor on the water heater. Next, just this weekend, I could not restart the pilot on the same water heater (after my wife had turned off the gas valve for about two weeks for some unknown reason). Terry talked me through the starting procedure over the phone to try to save me a trip. When that did not work, he had someone out within two hours (Saturday afternoon). After it only took them a few minutes to light the pilot, they rodded my slow-draining bathtubs at no extra cost. I'm not sure Your Helpful Plumber is the cheapest option available (although admittedly I'm not a frequent user of plumbing services), but I believe they will save me money in the long run. I appreciate the service I've received from Terry and his guys, and I hope to never have to search for another plumber again. Thank you, Terry! read more
