The food at this restaurant is amazing. My only complaint is that not everything is on their delivery menus. I sometimes need to use a different delivery service to get what I want. For example Fantuan delivery doesn't have Dan Dan noodles on the menu. The delivery menu from another doesn't have the Thai tea and Cheers doesn't have my absolute favorite Sansho Fungus or the tea I also love their garlic spinach. Still the food is worth the hassle. Try it you won't be disappointed, unless you want "Americanized" food. read more

Worst Meal I've Had In A Long Time. This place is a bit of a hole in the wall but I usually love that. The service here was better than expected based on the reviews here but the food was even worse than I imagined. The only thing mildly palatable was the black pepper shrimp which was closer to shrimp fajitas and had some sort of salt. The noodle soup was like a water broth and no flavor or salt. The spicy crispy duck with garlic sauce was not spicy, crispy or had much garlic. The duck was so fatty it was difficult to get down. This is my dad's restaurant so I am slightly biased, but I have been to China several times and have been to NY Chinatown/Flushing, LA, and Seattle for Chinese food because it is my favorite. It isn't the same as my favorite food stalls in the New World Mall, but it is serving a different audience in Maryland. Yu Zhou Cafe is the only Chinese restaurant in the area (don't have to drive several hours away) to find delicious Szechuan style food -- which is my favorite. My go to orders are their Cold Spicy Mung Bean Noodles appetizer (liang fen), spicy fish filet hotpot (fei teng yu), Chinese broccoli (zhong guo jie lan), and beef and okra (mi jiao niu). They have a lot of other dishes that you can't beat in the area for price or flavor and I love that they have both American Chinese food and authentic Chinese food. Haven't been here since pre-COVID and it was pretty good. Came on the weekend when they have more authentic food on the buffet. One of my continual Go-To's even though they've changed management over the years from FuShing Cafe. They have both Weekend dine-in lunch lines for small dishes or you can order off the menu for lunch/dinner for bigger dishes. Cash only gets you punch card advantages for future purchases. Orders/payment is up front to start the meal if you dine in Parking is spacious Service: They've got a great team of wait staff that I've gotten to see over the years. Usually they're pretty attentive and on point, only a couple times have I had any sort of hiccups or delays. Their takeout containers from lunch have gotten smaller which can make things annoying, however. I looked through the pictures very carefully on this listing and noticed a reoccurring theme, I needed to order the Liang Fen. There were a few people throughout the reviews and photos that commented that the Liang Fen was both authentic and delicious. So I was looking through the menu and couldn't find it anywhere. So I showed a picture on Yelp of the dish to the waiter and he instantly recognized it. "Oh yes! Liang Fen." He informed me that it was on another menu... Another Menu: Umm... why didn't I get that menu? I'm not gonna go further into the reason why I didn't get this menu... but all I'll say is: I want that menu. I'm an adventurous eater, like many of my friends, and I want to see the WHOLE menu. Please don't assume that I want to order Americanized Chinese Food. I don't. I don't want orange chicken, I don't want beef with broccoli... I wan't Chinese food when I go to a Chinese restaurant; not what American's think Chinese food should be. I mean, I'm not calling all Americanized Chinese food gross... but it's just not what I'm there for. Rant over. So I ordered the Liang Fen, Dan Dan Noodles, and Xiao Long Bao. The Liang Fen was good: a gelatinous noodle shaped b, drenched in chili oil, and seasoned conservatively. The Dan Dan Noodles: Now, I've encountered this before, and it's really not my favorite; the version of dan dan with peanut butter. This one had a thick slathering of the stuff, chili oil, and I couldn't really see nor taste any ground up pork. Definitely not close to the best version I've had of this unfortunately. The Soup Dumplings: That's where the real surprise was. I didn't even know they had soup dumplings going into this, and from what I ate, I was decently impressed. I've had some pretty poor soup dumplings, and these were not them. The broth was tasty and rich, the meat in side was good. The dumpling wrapper was a LITTLE too flimsy and a couple came to the table with holes in them, but outside of that (which I know is a bit of an issue); a pretty solid soup dumpling. Came here for a family dinner on a Saturday. Place was pretty packed but we got seated quickly. We ordered the mung bean jello, fei teng fish, stewed lamb hotpot, chili pepper beef, and stir fry pea shoots. You have to write the items down on a piece of paper yourself. Let me tell you, the spice level here is no joke. By the time we finished all of us were sweating and my brother downed 4 cups of water. We used to dine here with extended family and I just forgot all about this place during the pandemic. My family was getting together and was out running errands. Yu Zhou came to mind and I realized it would be very easy for me to swing by on my way home for takeout. I coordinated and asked my mom to call ahead for me as my Chinese is heavily accented : ) I am a Yelp fail once again! Forgot to check in when I got there and didn't take pictures of the Chinese menu or our dishes. Guess I was just too hungry! I asked my mom for two of my favorites, the sliced beef tendon appetizer that is slathered in chili oil and served with slivered green onions. Yum. I also like the dried bean curd with pork. I don't know why I love this dish so much. As simple as the ingredients are, you just can't recreate it at home without the high heat of the wok. Another favorite is the duck that you put into the little steamed buns with hoisin sauce and scallion. What else did we have- lamb with bean curd that would have been served in the hot pot, liang fen, some type of bun with filling, fish with mu er (fungus), eggplant, fresh greens I think it was snow pea greens. It really satisified a craving that I didn't realize I had. The other nice thing was that when we walked in, I started to head back as the greeter walked back to the front. We all had masks on but as he realized we were picking up, he said oh wai mai (Chinese for takeout). I laughed and was like oh yeah because he said it on point and then I realized that it was the same gentleman that had been working there for a long time. It was also nice to chat with the ladies in the back and they offered me a free tapioca milk tea drink. I love these little drinks that they serve- to me it is the original as they use the small clear pearls before the boba craze took off. I love coming here whenever we're visiting the bf's parents. Our favorite dish to order is the Fei Ting Fish, which is similar to Shui Zhu Yu or Sichuan Boiled Fish. It's sliced fish filets, bean sprouts, and cabbage cooked in chili pepper soup. Bf's mom loves the stuffed tofu dish here. We always walk away super full and satisfied. The only con I can think of is that you have to order at the counter in the back of the restaurant and if you don't speak Chinese it can be difficult to figure out what to order and how to order. The set up for ordering your food is atypical here. The hostess seats you, gives you your menu, and an index card for you to write down your order. You bring your order up to the cashier and pay. Then the food is brought out to your table. Some helpful hints regarding payment. 1) There is a minimum charge of $6.95 to use your credit card. 2) You can only use three credit cards per table if you want to split your tab. 3) If you want to receive stamp discount card you can only use cash payment with $20 minimum. (I think this is their rewards card but not sure.) With the set up of having to pay for your food up front and only having one register open, the line can take awhile. Fortunately, the kitchen is fairly fast and it doesn't take very long for the food to come out. My table ordered the following: 1) Fried Chicken Dumpling - it was ok. What you would expect at any restaurant. 2) Eggplant with Garlic Sauce - This was my favorite dish of everything we ordered. It was flavorful and tender. 3) Duck with Scallion Hot Plate - The duck was shredded or sliced thin. I thought it was going to be thicker chunks which I am generally used to how it's served at other restaurants. My friend found a bone so be careful if you order this. 4) Crispy Beef - tasted like there was more batter than beef. I would have preferred more beef. Also it was surprisingly very sweet. Was looking for a good place for Chinese food in the Gaithersburg area since we always frequent Rockville. We were glad we came here as the food prices were not as expensive as other places and the portions were still generous. We ordered the spinach and tofu soup, the shrimp balls (the winner!), three cups chicken (kids loved it but I've had better elsewhere), braised beef shank (tender meat and it comes with radish), the crispy fried squid (looks like fries but has enough salt and pepper to add that nice flavor), and the steamed fish fillet (love the soy ginger broth it is was served, fish is flaky and a much healthier alternative to the fried fish fillet). If you want a good Chinese meal within a reasonable price point, this is the place to go. The only downer is you don't get to really talk to your servers. They hand you a piece of paper for you to write down your orders and you hand it back to them. It will be hard to ask questions about the menu. read more

Visited this place on the road. Food is very good. It is something you expect from usual Chinese restaurants, but I felt it was less greasy. Also they do not hesitate using their traditional spices in certain dishes like in their appetizers. The lady who attended us was also very nice and provided good service. This is my family's go to Chinese restaurant. We've been coming here for years, even before Yu Zhou, when it was Fu Shing. My favorite dish has to be Bean Curd Schzeuan style. It's so flavorful and has the right amount of kick to it. I've noticed that a few of the wait staff have been there since my family started coming to the restaurant in 2009, so I would like to think that means that they treat their employees well. One more note - they have a separate Chinese menu. Actually, they kind of separate the whole restaurant into two sections, one for non-Chinese people and the other for Chinese people. Doesn't bother me, I actually think its pretty funny. Not sure what their menu is like but it looks good from the dishes I've seen from trying to peek over the great wall. read more

This is mainly a lunch review. During the weekdays, they offer one of the best value lunches around. For $6.95, you stand in line, like in a cafeteria, and you get a choice of white rice, fried rice, lo mein or rice noodles, plus two heaping entree choices. It is not a buffet, as some of the Yelp reviews state. I like the white fish entree, which is served daily but in different sauces and like the shrimp and chicken dish too. Mapo tofu entree works well if you get regular white rice too. You are able to sit down anywhere and the will provide water and tea. I give a little tip when I leave, but that's optional. If you're a fan of numb/spicy food and want to take your taste buds for a trip to the heart of Sichuan, this is the place to go! I come here by myself, or with my family. We really liked our first experience in this place. AMBIANCE: simple Chinese decor, very clean, booth wasn't very comfortable for us so next time ask for a table. FOOD: The most authentic and yummy Chinese food we ate in MD (excluding dim sum). Had Duck with onion, meat baos and sesame sweet buns from the weekend hot bar, sweet rise baos with pork and 8 treasures rise dessert. Service: long line yet no one was directing seating even though there was a sign that said wait to be seated. There was plenty of tables available. The young girl cashier is dumb. She cant understand english very well and when u talk too fast in chinese or english she gets confused. She should not be taking orders or handling money. Food: the food use to be so good under the previous owner. Now its gone too poop. The dishes at the counter look like they've been sitting there awhile thus the fish in photo look like a pile of mush. The noodle had no taste because they were cheap on the sauce. Also it tasted hard like kept too long. Ordered the pan fried noodle and it wasnt even the thin wonton noodle. It was some weird noodle usually served at western restaurants. Beef was chewy even though it had a strong baking soda taste to tenderize the meat and too much corn starch for thickening the sauce that it was a glob of jello in your mouth. Everything I have gotten from their dry hot pot to their lunch specials and weekend dim sum has always been consistently good. The owner/manager works behind the cash register and is always honest and friendly with their service. I have been coming to this restaurant for over 15 years. When I was in high school, this restaurant used to be called Suzhou and had the best lunch boxes with orange chicken. I mean, I used to run miles to get here after tennis practice just to eat the orange chicken. Now the place has re-branded into Sichuan flavored cuisine. We came here on Mother's day and the place was packed. The menu is all in Chinese, which further attests to the authenticity of this place. Spicy beef tendon (cold dish) - zingy, numbing spice that's not overwhelming. Consistent texture and the oil was sweet and savory. Probably the best spicy beef tendon I have ever had. Dry hot pot with beef tendon - also quite spicy and flavorful, probably should have gotten the beef instead of the beef tendon instead. Fish with fried bean paste - so different (in a good way) compared to any other fish preparation I have had. Usually the fish filet is used for crispy fish or fish in spicy chili oil (水煮魚), but this was coated with a layer of chunky, nutty bean paste and served on a open fire hot plate. Garlicky stir-fried pea shoots - ordered this off the secret menu, cooked perfectly without any overdone parts Overall, really good experience for legit Chinese/Sichuan cuisine. Weekend mornings at 11:30am is when it begins, the cafeteria-style hot food bar serving everything from traditional Chinese donuts & soybean milk to veggies, steam buns, noodles, fried tofu, sesame cakes... So many options at a decent price point! Good for a chinese-style brunch fest if you're looking for more than just dim sum. Because this part of the restaurant is mostly self-serve (you head to the front, choose your dishes, and pay in one go), service is a bit lacking and we had to pick up our own chopsticks. Excellent choice for some wonderful Chinese food in the Gaithersburg area. Love that you write order on paper and bring up to counter option and they bring the food to you quickly. Food came out fresh, hot and tasty. One of my favorite is the Yellow Bird vegetarian dish. Not found at many places and this place does it well. They have some wonderful lunch specials and if you go with some of their chef specialties, you will definitely enjoy your meal as those are the dishes highly recommended. They have hired the famous Chef Wong from Shanghai and she makes lots of delicious eats. The hot food bar choices on the weekends from 11:30am to 2:30pm feature authentic Chinese dishes. Got the general tso's shrimp and fried rice during the lunch special and it was super delish! It was an extra $2 charge for the fried rice but it was worth it. They gave a huge portion. Will add to the litany of folks complaining about service and rudeness of the owner and ladies serving the food upfront. I will preface this by saying that we frequent this establishment; even during the pandemic, we supported this business. The food is average but it is convenient, especially during the weekend when cafeteria style is served and you can get in and out fairly quickly. I remember when the line was pretty long, but today when I visited, there was no one in line. And after experiencing the rudeness of the owner and reading the online reviews, I understand now. The County no longer mandates masks. We were looking to get in and get out and go home. We were treated like second class citizens without masks, asking for us to back away as if we were germ filled. Today, I walked out of the restaurant and will never come back. I will tell everyone I know not to come to this establishment. You do not get to treat people the way you do without consequences. Your food is not that great and there are plenty of other chinese restaurants in the area. I hope your establishment closes up from lack of business. You do not share our community's focus on welcoming all and kindness. I hope your business shut down. And to all potential visitors... please do not visit this establishment. I have been eating from this restaurant since 1997, back when they were Fu Shing Cafe, for almost 1/4 of a century now, and they always had good food and service. Last Sunday, I ordered takeout from them. The food was prepared in a timely manner, and overall was fine. However, this time, the stir-fried string beans did not have enough flavor, the Kung Pao chicken had a little too much starch, and all the dishes had a little too much oil. Maybe this restaurant is going through hard times because of the COVID-19 pandemic, but I hope things will get better. I came on Christmas Day and when my family and I arrived at this place, it wasn't crowded, full of empty tables, BUT they couldn't seat us because majority of those tables were reserved. So we waiting quite a bit (~40 minutes) and my dad had mentioned putting two small tables together in the middle so it can fit us and they finally did. They give you menus (which has a lot of selections) and you write down what you want to order on a piece of paper and take it to the register to pay. So you pretty much order/pay first before getting your dishes. The dishes did come out nice and hot and quick. All dishes were mediocre except this one dish: Duck with Scallion Hot Plate. If you like DUCK/peking duck style, you should try this. This plate gives you meaty duck pieces, super crispy skin, little buns to put the duck in and the hoisin sauce (that you would eat with peking duck). This was my favorite dish. My dad liked the Fish Fillet with Minched Pork, but I didn't think that had much flavor to the fish. If you want vegetables - spinach with garlic was good if you like the garlicky taste. Crispy Pork was my second favorite, has the sweet orangy taste (like orange chicken) to it if you like that, very chewy. Pork chop was my nephew's favorite, it has a little salt and peppery taste, its fried. We ordered more, but I didn't try the others :) Nothing wowed me except the duck. (: read more

Terrible night here for my friend's birthday. I have to say the lady who has Taiwanese accent is unbelievably mean and hypocritical. She gave a table of 6 seats for four Americans, but rejected to offer a 5 seats table for my group of 3 (we are Chinese), and make us wait more than 1 5 mins. When we asked to add a chair to a 4 seater tablet, she said no, that it's the restaurant's policy to have that table for only 2 people. This same lady later rejected our request to add some sauce to a dish that we ordered for the first time and didn't like. Luckily her colleague was a bit more understanding and have us the sauce. I have been a customer for over 10 years but they are so pathetic in accommodating you even if you show up 30 seconds after they close, which by the way is up to them. Online they may be open until 9:30 but they can decide to shut their doors a at 8 pm with no notice. Today I took another family from our neighborhood raving about their food .. 7:47 pm they wouldn't open their doors.. I told them my kids are hungry and we drove 30 mins they didn't care ... to me such a business shouldn't be in the industry ..... needless to say their own people were being served. We've decided not to go there again! It's not the first time such has happened...we've just over loooked a lot!! The owner also will harass you for tips. My mother hosted a lunch there, and paid their servers cash tips, which the owner did not know about. She approached my mother on the table and embarrassed her in front of her guests saying she had to pay a proper tip. Beyond ridiculous!! Once we ordered delivery, and she got mad at me for giving the driver 5 dollars for a $ 80 Order. If I am not being served on a table, why do I have to pay the driver 15-20% ?!?
