This was our first time dining here, and unfortunately, it was a disappointing experience from start to finish. The sushi rolls were oversized, with an overwhelming amount of rice and noticeably low-quality ingredients. The sushi itself was dry and lacked freshness. We specifically requested that our meal be served in a certain order: soup first, then appetizers, followed by sushi and rolls. However, the staff brought the miso soup first, then jumped straight to the rolls and appetizers afterward, which disrupted the flow of the meal. When we asked to speak with the manager or owner, the server responded, "You can talk to me." I politely shared our concerns, and she simply said, "This is our standard." I mentioned that this kind of service could drive customers away and that we wouldn't be returning, to which she responded, "Our customers like it the way it is." At that point, we decided not to order anything further, paid for what we had, and left. Sadly, it confirmed what my wife noticed from the start -- it was a Friday at 1 PM, and the restaurant was nearly empty, with only two tables occupied. Yuka Sushi used to have pretty good food when they first opened. We live in Cypress and we even received the "Welcome" coupon in the mail, which is why we ended up going. This was our like 8th time there. The quality of our food this last time we visited was not good. The only thing that tasted good and fresh was the Sushi. However, the "Premium" rolls, both the Paradise roll and Cilantro Albacore roll, were tiny compared to our other visits. Also, the rice consistency was extremely sticky almost like sticky rice. However, what really got me disappointed this time was the Beef Yaki. This beef was overpowered by so much black pepper that it was hard to eat. It was way too spicy. Had the all you can eat which for most places scares me. Well, Yuko was top shelf sushi at its best. Wanted to try a different sushi restaurant with family. This place offers AYCE and a la carte options. Quite extensive menu. There may be a difference in the portions and offerings for the AYCE. About $40 per person. We did a la carte and after tax and tip came to about $60 each. Seemed like a slow dine in night, there was only one couple in another booth. However there were at least three delivery pickup drivers, so they were busy enough. Quite subdued set up and very spacious. Several tables, booths and one long banquette to one side of the building. Also bar seating. We had a rookie server who made sure she got our orders right. We did ask if a kid's chicken bowl was made with fried chicken: it did not. It was grilled chicken topped with teriyaki sauce, we asked for it to be remade with the sauce on the side. The other observation I made was there did not seem like an awareness that there is a one year old sitting at the head of the booth: food kept getting placed within the baby's reach EACH time. Maybe some more service training is in order. About the food: Black snapper carpaccio was topped with a delicious dressing and slivered onions plus masago - 10/10 White House roll had four different kinds of fish wrapped in soy paper with shiso leaf - 9/10 Fusion halibut- delicious topped with a dot of yuzu koshu - 10/10 fusion young albacore - buttered rice and topped with crispy onions -7/10 because it did not hold together Four seasons- cucumber wrapped around four different types of fish - 8/10 again for falling apart , I picked mine up with my fingers. White House roll : Fresh Tuna, salmon, cucumber, ooba, green onion, avocado and spicy crabmeat wrapped with soy paper topped with eel sauce and wasabi mayonnaise, also with shiso Leaf : 9/10 Last call is 930 pm, so I felt a little sorry for the three people who came in at 932. Came here for our anniversary dinner, was not disappointed. They have a good variety of sushi, sashimi, rolls, carpaccio, and all of the common sides. The chefs prepared everything we ordered proper, and the quality of the fish they are using is on point. They also have a good selection of beer, wine, and sake. The servers were on top of things, our cups were never empty, and it was pretty crowded so kudos to them. I really like what they've done with the decor and layout from the previous place, it's a good atmosphere that can keep parties going while also giving us a good party of two experience. Literally hidden gem. Located in a quiet, almost vacant looking plaza with California Fish Grill being their only savior. I was only able to find this place through yelp with the pictures/reviews looking promising. Such a clean and modern feel when first walking in and our server was sweet right off the bat. The menu was really straightforward and easy to navigate. I ended up choosing the Tataki Roll, Yellowtail Collar, and Yellowtail Sashimi. The Tataki Roll came out in like five minutes and then it disappeared. It disappeared because it was so good. It had spicy tuna and shrimp tempura inside I think? The outside had seared salmon and I believe a chili oil vibe type of sauce on top. We were going to order another one immediately after but practiced self control as our other dishes haven't come out yet. Yellowtail sashimi looked fresh and the portion was generous. I can't say how good it was because I don't eat yellowtail but my dad did say MMMM so I could guess it was good. Onto the main reason I'm writing this review. The yellowtail collar was the best I've ever had. Generous portion, perfectly crispy on the outside yet being perfectly soft and juicy on the inside. The paired ponzu sauce was so light, fresh, and citrusy being a perfect compliment to the collar. By itself though, the collar was just as good the sauce was just the cherry on top. The menu is creative and artfully presented to the table by an attentive staff. The food is "modern Asian fusion" which is different from traditional Japanese sushi. That's fine, especially in California. The focus seems to be on the AYCE customers. It bugs me that many Asian restaurants dilute their shoyu to the point that it becomes brown water. When I pointed it out to the staff, their excuse was so silly that I just smiled. Maybe they don't know what real shoyu is supposed to taste like, or it's just a lack of training? I grew up in Japan so I know the difference. This small detail makes me wonder what other shortcuts this place makes with their food, with the assumption the customers don't know the difference. The K-pop music is LOUD! Maybe it's not as noticeable when the place gets crowded. Or, are they trying to create a nightclub atmosphere? My husband said, "I really like their food, but I hate that music so much that I don't want to keep going back." The fish tasted stale and the octopus was the most chewy I've ever had. Almost had to spit it out because it just wouldn't break up so I could swallow it. We arrived at the tail end of happy hour & ordered a cocktail & hot sake (both 50% off) along with some snacks: salmon hand roll & sesame chicken ($4-6 i think). My family and I have been here since they've changed ownership and became Yuka. Food is pretty good, especially the Uni pasta, Kalbi plate that my daughter really likes and orders every time, miso salmon pasta that my sister in law loves, and definately the kids miso pasta for $7! My son loves it soooo much. I've also tried the AYCE sushi, not bad, definately enjoyed it. I've also previously tried the Omakase, not bad for the price. The employees are nice, the only server I've had an issue with is Chloe due to her lack of friendliness and lack of knowledge on how to pour a decent glass of wine. The manager was nice enough to give me a second glass of wine with a normal pour, thank you so much, sir. Aside from that, we will continue to dine here frequently as a Cypress local. We came to try their AYCE on a Tuesday evening and it was very empty. The interior was very clean. There were two servers a male and a female. The male server was very attentive and kind and the female server seemed new to the job. We were interested in ordering the happy hour oyster, but she kept referring to the original non-happy hour priced dinner oysters. Because of the confusion, we decided to not order oysters and to just keep to the dinner menu. We got an order of each of the limited dishes like the scallop nigiri and other specialty nigiris and they were all so delicious. No wonder they limited those sushi dishes because I definitely would've kept ordering more if they hadn't. We loved their unagi, although it was a little on the drier side, we liked how crispy it was. I was pleasantly surprised by how good the tamago sushi was. It was the perfect level of sweet and has a good level of moisture. We weren't a big fan of some of the appetizers like the jalapeno bomb, spicy tuna cracker, and the shishito peppers were too bitter.
