This is not regarding the service, which is friendly and excellent, nor the food itself, which was very good, tho in miniscule servings. This place will never see me again simply due to the insane price. For a straight sashimi plate with the tiniest pieces of fish I have ever seen (no soup, no salad) and a glass of water it cost $40 at LUNCHTIME! You can go to almost any decent sushi place around here and the same is at least $10-13 less at the same time of day with larger pieces of fish that are equally as fresh. Never again. The miso cod was a stand out for sure. The fish was cooked so well that it tasted like sea bass. The maki with truffle oil was incredible as well. Along with Ganga, this is some of the most fantastic and innovative sushi in Monmouth County. The rolls are not too big and all the flavors are right on point. This is one of the few sushi spots where the "special" rolls really focus on flavor and is not just a pile of ingredients pulled together for looks. One of the best favorites is the tuna sashimi pizza; it's incredible and showcases the tuna. I often find myself craving this dish. Out of the rolls, the Sea Bright one is a favorite, with yellowtail, tuna and salmon with avocado, cucumber, fish roe, Japanese mayo, and shaved bonito sprinkle. Another fun appetizer to order is the rice crispies dish or the Shuen roll, which has salmon tartar and spicy tuna that melts in your mouth. Prices are on par with New York and items are a few dollars more than those of sushi places around the area, but the quality and creativity in all of the dishes is well worth it. On Friday night, I had sushi for dinner again at another BYOB! Yumi http://yumirestaurant.com/ is an old favorite of mine, having lived only two miles away before my move to Maryland. A friend of mine and former neighbor have a standing date night to Yumi almost every time that we have dinner together. The restaurant has a trendy atmosphere, the food is delicious and they cater to her gluten free diet restrictions. We also greatly enjoy the ability to stop at the liquor store a few storefronts down, relax, talk over a bottle or two of wine and enjoy great food. I almost always order the same thing; however, I have never had anything that I did not like! Be warned, it is on the more expensive end for a sushi meal but the quality makes it worthwhile. I also factor in that we were able to bring our own wine, rather than buy each drink individually. Sea Bright is a cute town but in season, parking can be an issue. There are parking meters in front of the restaurant and a large municipal lot across the street. Even in peak season, we have always been able to find parking in the lot in the evening. For Sushi Lovers near the NJ Shore, this is a must try!! Bring a good friend, wine, and your appetite. read more

The chef is extremely creative with all the ingredients, combining various ingredients and cooking techniques to create a completely unexpectedly pleasant taste. My absolute favorites are the soft shell crabs. I still have yet to find a place that makes them half as good as Yumi in the States! Has the perfect amount of crunch on the outside and is extremely favorful without overpowering the natural seafood taste. The toro here are an absolute. They cut it in a way that completely melts in your mouth. Sooo delicious! The pork buns were also great as the porks were cooked for a long time, which extracts a the fats from the meat. This place is the real deal! I brought a friend of mine who frequents some of the top Sushi restaurants in NYC and he couldn't stop raving about the place. Some of his comments were "extremely creative" "very well executed" and "I've never had this before". Although not inexpensive, we had an Omakase dinner served by Chef Sean, while sitting at the Sushi Bar. It was a delicious and authentic dinner experience which included Kobe beef cooked on hot stones, excellent Toro and many other creative and beautifully prepared dishes. Best sushi in NJ! A favorite spot for my family and I on any occasion. Can be on the pricer end, but we always leave with our bellies full of delicious and a big smile on our face. My personal favorites are the Tuna Pizza, Sea Bright Roll, and if you feel like splurging a little I highly recommend the Wagyu grilled on a hot stone. It comes with 6 slices of strip loin, served with a hot stone so you can grill it at your table. It may not sound like much, but when you marinate it in the sauce it comes with before putting it on the grill, it is a flavor explosion and the meat just melts in your mouth. I'm a bit of a sushi snob, and recently moved away from my #1 go to spot (Sushi By Kazu). I've been traveling to it once per week for amazing sushi, but figured I should give a local spot near me a chance. Yumi has been in the "best of Monmouth County" magazine for quite a few years, and based on yelp, I figured it was worth a shot. We ordered bento boxes for lunch- the contents were pretty good. I'd say it's certainly a great value for what you're getting. Their Gyoza is good, but I've had better. The salad had an interesting vinegar/citrus-like dressing (I liked that very much), and it also came with a yakisoba-style noodle which was lacking flavor. You then pick your main- so I got a spicy tuna roll and my friend did the beef teriyaki. Beef teriyaki was cooked perfectly and very tasty. We also started with a roll that had king crab and spicy tuna in it. The sushi- Not good and 100% not worth going back for. The spicy tuna was overpowered by a mediocre spicy mayo- I tasted quite a bit of filler as well (crunchies/flying fish roe). The roll that allegedly had king crab on it tasted very fishy, and I almost cut my mouth on a large crab shell........ (accidents happen, I didn't mention this to my server as I understand how hard shelling a crab is, and it isn't her fault... but I probably should have said something) We finished with the Cheesecake tempora dessert. It was a great idea. However, I didn't love it as much as I thought I would have. I also was disappointed that it came with Chocolate Ice cream. That is not mentioned on the menu, or I would have asked for vanilla. I think if you want great fish/delicious sushi and you live in monmouth county, take the drive to Freehold and go to Sushi By Kazu. It'll blow you away. This simply isn't worth it. read more

First time at yumi! Got the scallion pancakes and the veggie egg roll! Both apps were very good, best of each I've ever had. For entrees I for the lobster tail roll, only five pieces; the flavor was good but the lobster was over cooked. My husband got the pan seared shrimp over risotto, it was HORRIBLE! The shrimp were cooked to a crisp, so over cooked , no flavor and incredibly dry. The "risotto" was white rice with a broth added, not risotto at all! For dessert we got the mochi ice cream, much to be desired, nothing special and not much flavor! Will not be going back. Meal started off great and slowly got worse! We have ordered delivery from Yumi for years and have always been satisfied. The food has been excellent and the staff very friendly and professional. Something has changed recently - e.g., there are different people answering the phone who seem unfamiliar with the menu. And certainly not as courteous - maybe new ownership or new management? Our delivery order this evening had not arrived by the time provided (was 60 minutes and was told 45 minutes), so I called to inquire. BEST sushi in central NJ! We go for sushi all over the county (and parts of northern NJ) and have yet to find fish as fresh and well presented as at Yumi. The menu is creative and the specials are fresh and interesting every time we go. I can't say enough great things about the entire menu and the attentive staff. Standout items include the trio tar tar and pork belly appetizers. Years ago, I tried to recreate Yumi's pork belly. I braised it for 10 or 12 hours just as they do and made a Japanese yam purée. Good food, maybe the best sushi between SB and Keyport area. (venue wise) Nice atmosphere, went on a Thursday night and was pretty packed but not crazy. Seating was a little uncomfortable, we were sat between two tiny tables with people about an arms length away on both sides. Have to keep convo down unless you want your neighbors knowing your biz. There is other seating there, that's just the table we were "lucky" enough to be seated at. Next time I go I'll definitely request elsewhere- like outside or at the front bar. It's BYO which is nice, too. Also it seems you can order sake from the liquor store down the street and its delivered.... Orrrr you can just stop at the liquor store before you go? I give it a 4 because the service was quite slow. We sat down and it was awhile before someone came over, then she disappeared again with our wine (nearly ten min) and came back and then said she would "be right back" and again wasn't back for another prolonged period of time. We didn't get water and it wasn't until after we finished our meal she said oh do you want some water? I also heard the people next to us ask the manager (I think) for his check because they couldn't find their server, and then I heard the couple next to them do the same.
