Food: The food at first looked good at a far distant. To be honest, I gave out very low rating reviews because I'm a food critic that traveled the world. The food itself was very very bad. Too much MSG. Waiter/Waitress: Friendly at first! But they will turn away after the first time you ask them for something. I dropped my fork, and my friend who also speaks their language told me that the waiter called me a "Clumsy Whinny (Cracker) White person". After I asked for a water refill, the other waitress gave me a death stare and whispered " Little F**ker". After I asked about one dish that has not arrive after the sixth time, it came. But I noticed that the food looked like one of the waiters spit into my dish. Manager: I spoke with the manager about my problem after I paid my bill. I'm a recent customer and come here for Dim Sum every week. And I should be a valued customer shown with great respect. The manager did not solve my problem of how My friends and I should be treated. Place: It was cleaned every time I went here in the past and the old location from in Newberry. The last time I came here was a week ago. This place is a disaster! There are food cums everywhere. Awful lo mein..I ordered take out so that I wouldn't have to cook but I ended up having to cook it anyways! The noodles were completely plain and undercooked, and the tofu was supposed to be fried but was instead watery, mushy and disgusting. I had to throw it on the pan at home and it still wasn't much better!!! Look at the difference between the pictures!! There were also hardly any vegetables in it. The guy at the front door that seats you has the personality of a block of wood. As first impressions do count, suggest they replace him with a real human being. Went for Dim Sum, which was hit or miss depending on what dish you picked. The steamed pork buns are very good, but the steam pork ribs were 90% fat attached to bone. The steam chai dumplings were so so, the outer wrap was way too thick. The fried shrimp balls were again very good. So again, hit or miss so try what you like and then determine for yourselves. The cart servers were friendly and the service was also very good. Will come back, and we will see if things improve. But overall, it's a suggested stop for Dim Sum. read more

First time going and I was told it was great. First the friend with me got her order and the waiter tried to give me a chicken type meal when I had ordered short beef ribs and tell me it wasn't chicken. WTH. Just not worth it. I have tried to stay loyal, in spite a steady decline in food quality and service all while increasing prices. Today was the last straw. I came in lunch and the service was terrible. Dim sum server gave me the wrong order. Ordered chicken corn soup and got crab. The fried rice special came out in less than 3 minutes. It was not fresh and obviously had been previously prepared. Then the waiter completely ignored me and had to ask dim sum server for a set up and a plate. Since I'm not Asian they must think I don't use chop sticks. When I asked for some, the waiter looked at me and said "you" want chop sticks?! The icing on the cake was I got crab soup. Yay! Finally! A Dim Sum place in Gainesville! Yummy House isn't the best dim sum I've ever had, but it definitely beats driving all the way to Orlando/Tampa to get your fix. The dim sum menu itself is decent. Plates ranging from $3-$4. I thought some things were hit and miss. Avoid the sweet chestnut cake and disappointing spare ribs. I'm glad their steamed BBQ pork buns are good! From the main menu, we tried the salt and pepper pork chop. Very tasty with lots of flavor. Don't let the beat up outside exterior fool you. Inside is nicely decorated and clean. Parking is kind of a hassle during the lunch rush hour. It looks like the restaurant was perviously a fast food establishment, so the parking lot isn't meant to hold a lot of cars. I hope they can do something about that later on, if they get more popular! Service was fast and friendly. There was a minor mix up in our order, but the kitchen was very nice to send some extra surprise plates as an apology. They're still a work in progress, but I expect great things! Went back to Yummy House to try their dinner menu and was not disappointed. Flavors were on point and server was extremely attentive. Hard to find a sit-down Cantonese restaurant around these parts that actually get it right. For example, something relatively simple and common as wonton noodle soup. You'd be amazed how most restaurants here will serve you something tasting completely what it is not supposed to taste like. But no, Yummy House gets it done. Let's put it this way. It's not the BEST Chinese ever, but if I HAD to take my parents to a Chinese restaurant in Gainesville, it'd be here. Will be back to see if the dim sum improves. FYI I ordered the black bean baby clams, wonton noodle soup, scallion oil chicken, and spicy seafood tofu pot with black bean sauce. PS their chili oil hot sauce is spicier than normal. read more

We have always loved the food and service but the atmosphere is not what it used to be. This is a Chinese restaurant but the music being played contained trashy graphic language: "Back that A... up" and the "F" word among other filthy language. I wonder if the owner's know the management and/or staff are even playing this trash. Even with the Corona Virus, I thought there would be more patrons. Since they moved the quality of food quality dropped significantly. I would have called this 4-5 stars easily prior to last night. Now they serve small amounts of meat in the dish, portion size overall decreased and our noodles that comes w. shrimp had 1 shrimp in it total. The Chinese broccoli that we ordered for my vegetarian grandmother was just a plate of chopped stems. The waiter tried to explain that it was their version of Chinese broccoli not to have any leafy parts, just the thick stems. I question the decision to only serve the stems on a purely vegetarian dish but the waiter was a little rude about this but quickly offered to remake the dish. That'd be like you ordering snap peas and the waiter giving you grief that the artistic direction of the kitchen was only to give you the pods, without the peas. Since they moved, the portion sizes dropped and the flavors became more bland which is quite a shame. They were one of the few locations in town that offered a large variety of authentic chinese food. The final straw for us was the water that we were served when our glasses were refilled, which was atrocious. While we liked that our food was on the saltier side, we couldn't eat when they refilled our water glass with worse than tap water. I've lived in gainesville now for 7 years. I don't mind the tap water in town and grew up on drinking plain tap water in multiple cities. This water was disgusting tasting so much so we couldn't drink it. It def was not the tap water I have in my home here and town, and was a stark difference compared to the original water in our water glass when we were initially seated which tasted pure and fresh. Once all the original water glasses were drank, we had enough and left. This place went from being one of the gems of Gainesville to cheap chinese food. I could not possibly eat it. When I complained about it, the server's excuse was that it was "fried". Fellow Yelper Ryan C. gave me the heads up about Yummy House. I'm sure glad he did! We started with the Shanghai dim-sum. Fantastic dumplings filled with pork and a light sauce. Highly reccomend. We got the Bistro lo-mein and Bistro fried rice. Both were packed with meat and delicious. Portions were huge and food quality was on point. The lo-mein is homemade and the veggies were crisp and fresh that came with it. The fried rice was also well prepared with lots of meat and shrimp. Prices are super cheap. Me and a group of friends came in from out of town for a weekend. Having been to their Tampa locations and having been to this location on a prior occasion, i knew the food was good. But on this day the service was horrible for me and my group. There was about 15 of us, so i knew the wait would be a little longer for food and our group generally just wanted Dim Sum and some other dishes which is why we came. First off, the waitress told us that she could only take 4 credit cards to pay. Which was absolutely absurd! Having been to the other locations with large groups of people, paying with multiple credit cards have never been a problem. I personally feel that the waitress was just too lazy to do the math. Second, when the dim sum cart came around, it only came to our table ONCE. Now in that one stop we did take most of the dishes in the cart (because obviously there was 15 of us, so we were going to eat a lot). But after that stop the cart never came back to our table and we saw them intentionally SKIP our table to go to the other tables in the restaurant especially the ones around us. So we really only got the one stop from the steam dim sum cart, the rest of the food we had to order off the regular menu which I'll get into next. Third goes back to our waitress. While I understand that we were a big table, we literally had to flag down another waitress for service, who just grabbed our original waitress to serve us and when she did the waitress always looked annoyed because we wanted to order something. (Uh, hello! Isn't that your job!?) After realizing that they were one intentionally skipping our table and two weren't coming around again with the steamed dim sum cart because it was almost closing time, we decided to get our check and go since we barely ate anything and had been waiting practically 30 minutes for food that we realized later wasn't coming with no notice from our waitress. If the service continues to be like this for groups of people, I won't be returning to this location any time soon. read more

My sesame chicken entree didn't come with rice and I had to pay extra for the rice on top of an already expensive entree. My experiences with this Yummy House location has always been a hit or miss. While the rating of three stars is for my general experience, I decided to write an actual review because my experience today was definitely a miss. I ordered the Basil Scallop and Shrimp off their lunch special menu and was disappointed to find that the portion of the food was extremely off. The dish was so drenched in sauce that the sauce alone would have filled 25% of the to-go box. There were barely any scallops or shrimp, but instead the dish was filled with mushrooms to make up for the lack of the protein I actually ordered. I would say a recurring problem I've noticed is the lack of consistency at Gainesville Yummy House. I hope they can fix that so diners are able to get consistent dining experiences. However, some dishes I would recommend from their menu are: Beef Chow Fun, Salt and Pepper Calamari, and Sizzling Beef Strips with Black Pepper Sauce (I've had this served to me not on the sizzling pan before so I'd clarify because it is much better on the pan. #inconsistent) read more

So far the service has been hit or miss, many times I get incorrect information because the staff is new and hasn't fully worked out the kinks in the system yet. As for the food, the menu items are decent. The dishes are relatively authentic to canto-chinese cuisine but pretty basic in flavor. Nothing exciting to write home about. Dim sum: I have only had the dim sum a few times and from the large variety I've tried, the dishes ok despite being a little pricey (again, nothing big to write home about). Unfortunately it is only served from 11AM-1PM (many of the staff told me it's 11-3, it's not as I found out by going at 1:30 one time). If it's super busy, good luck finding parking and a seat. If it's not busy, then many of the baked/fried dim sum items will be cold and the hot items in the steam cart will be lukewarm. Perhaps they should try steamed to order dim sum like many of the other places in Florida. So far it's the most edible dim sum in the city of Gainesville so that's somewhat exciting, right? read more

We had a great dinner here. We arrived a little after 5pm on a Saturday and were seated immediately. There were a lot of good choices on the menu, and we settled on mongolian beef, chicken lo mein, and the buddha's delight (steamed instead of stir-fried). The beef was very tasty, with a nice amount of spice. The lo mein was very good, the chicken very tender. Portions were large. Yummy House is my go to place for authentic Chinese food at a reasonable price. One of the things I love about this restaurant is they expose their customers to Chinese culture. They encourage the idea of sharing your food. Instead of ordering food for yourself, the servers encourage you order several platters to share with your family and friends. Along with the food, they do give extra plates to your table. They have definitely improved all of their shortcomings by moving to a bigger location. Before, it was hard to find parking (some of my friends got towed). However, there are more than enough parking spaces for everyone. They have also increased their seating so you don't have to wait long for a table. Also, they included a private dining area for bigger parties. If you're confused about what to order, I recommend the salt and pepper calamari for your appetizer. The fried calamari is mixed in their famous salt and pepper mix served with jalapenos. I always ask for their chili oil on the side, to give it the extra spice. Take the time to explore the menu and order different dishes. Last time, we ordered the Beef Short Ribs with Black Pepper Sauce and the Yummy House Fried Rice. It was heavenly~ On Sunday's, they do dimsum where servers walk around with a cart full of small appetizers to each table. You pick what you want and pay for what you eat. My favorites are the egg tarts, dumplings (all kinds!), and pineapple buns. The only con to Yummy House is their service (prevents me from giving the final star!). Don't get me wrong their servers are friendly and very quick. However, there have been many times where I lost track of my waiter because different servers were getting other customers food and drinks. Communication gets lost because you talk to 2-3 servers and end up waiting longer for your food. Yummy House needs to assign their servers to a table or area so customers know who to tip. Finally, they have great lunch specials where you get a lot of food for the price. Give this place a try especially if you're tired of regular Chinese take-out. read more

If you want dim sum, be sure to get there as soon as they open. We got there around 1 and were told that they ran out of dim sum! What they had left was on the cart but it was cold. I don't think they anticipated this level of success or the deprivation of Gainesville for good dim sum! We also went for dinner and got the seafood tofu hot pot and it was delicious! Honestly, one of my favorite places in Gainesville. Expect to spend $10-$20 here but don't worry the portions are large. Some of my favorite dishes here are the crispy calamari (best calamari in my opinion), the honey chicken (real honey), and the beef udon with black pepper sauce. I recommend coming here with a large party and doing it family style. It is great to try a little bit of everything on the menu than to have one good dish in my opinion. I feel like it is not a normal thing in american tradition except maybe in potlucks and thanksgiving with family but I highly suggest doing family style and just split the bill in 4s, 7s or however large your party is. I come here pretty often as it has one of my favorite types of food is Asian food and my experiences here have been nothing but pleasant. My house had dinner here and it was great doing it family style. We all spent a total of $20 a person, felt full and still had two meals worth of leftovers when we left. First time here for dinner. I hovered between 3 & 4 stars before choosing 4. I think authentic Chinese restaurants - the decor, service and fare - can be daunting to the unaccustomed. The food often gets unfairly compared to mall/chain Chinese food e.g. General Tsao's Chicken versus Geoduck with Chives (i.e. apples to oranges). Often the places that do a mean Roast Duck can't turn out a good Orange Chicken to save their life. Anyway getting past my pet peeve and on to Yummy House: I think its a mixture of both. The look seems somewhat "chainy" The owners were smart from a business point of view, since the restaurant seems to suit American tastes in terms of decor and service, yet are more authentic in the menu items themselves, though I did spot Orange Chicken & Sweet n Sour Pork on there I think. Even the menu itself was nicely done graphically, not the tacky, plain ones I see at others . They'll capture a portion of American diners and first-timers that not many authentic Chinese places can. It was modern, clean, nicely decorated with friendly service...4 things that already set them apart from the places I usually go to for "real" Chinese food :) The staff were all quick, attentive & friendly. Prices are pretty good, about $9-$12 for most entrees. We ordered chicken-corn soup (it's enough for 4-5 ppl !), Braised Grouper Clay Pot (with shitake & tofu). Veggie of the Day which was Baby Bok Choy in Garlic Sauce, and Scallop & Shrimp in Black Bean sauce (with asparagus and mushrooms). We ate "family style" of course. The only issue to me was the taste of the food itself. While the flavors seemed authentic, they were very low key, possibly toned down to suit Western palates like the rest. Or maybe it was because we ordered only seafood and veggies (i.e. more delicately flavored in general) as opposed to beef or pork which usually boasts bolder flavors. Although I could taste the real black bean flavor, it was slight. I also think it could be that this is Canton style cooking, I.e. lightly seasoned, just to enhance the natural flavors. Great authentic Chinese food, more expensive than the old site by I75 but just as tasty. The food has 4-star quality and taste but the service brings the score down. Unlike other places nearby, these servers work hard and try to do what they think you want but there's a communication barrier that I've not been able to penetrate (yet). I've been here 3 times and each time has been a poor experience. They do not check if the food is good, if it's not good, you're still charged for it and not accommodated for their mistakes. Drinks will be empty and there will be an attitude when you ask for a refill. It's as if these people don't know they're in the service industry. Also, the food is not all that good. It's over priced. 9 dollars for a plate of rice. You'd be better off at going to a hole in the wall, I promise the food would be better. 2 stars because the rice is good. Any of the meat I've had is too sweet. It's as if they use the same batter and pour different sauces with very little variation and serve them as completely different disheGood luck here. But I would choose something else after 3 times of bad experiences. I went back. My girlfriend likes their food. So, upon this adventure, we were given the wrong food. You like Chinese! This is Chinese. I always see our Chinese patrons here too. Their Dim sum /dimsm/ is a style of Chinese cuisine prepared as small bite-sized portions of food served in small steamer baskets or on small plates. Dim sum dishes are usually served with tea, together form a full tea brunch. "Wikipedia" is reasonable, and a great lunch choice. Dinner is Chinese, and you better be prepared for a very large portion. It might be better to have few people order separate plates and then share these meals. A bowl of rice is a buck extra but it is more rice than you should eat in one sitting. The prices are a bit more than a brunch meal but you could take home a whole other meal. read more

Yummy House Order: Pot Stickers, Egg Rolls, House Lo Mein Price: $23 Pros: Good food, friendly staff, more authentic "Chinese" that most places you will go (at least in my opinion Cons: Menu is a bit overwhelming with easily over 200 options; the appetizers were WAY too small for what they cost. Thoughts: I'd like to start off this review with the admission that I've never been to any part of china, I don't cook Chinese food, so I'm not exactly an expert on "authentic" Chinese food. That being said, I have found that the most specific to a location a restaurant says its food is, most likely, the more authentic it is. In this case the restaurant didn't say it served Chinese, it was Cantonese. All that being said this was the most authentic Chinese food I've ever had though I did have some issues with it. We ordered the pot stickers and egg rolls as appetizers and I was honestly a little surprised as to how small the plates were. You got 4 very small egg rolls and 4 very small pot stickers, each of which could be eaten in a bite or two. This wouldn't really feel like an "issue" if each appetizer wasn't in the $6-$7 range. Given the size of each piece I just felt like it wasn't worth $1 per bite. That aside my wife and I decided to split the House Lo Mien. The noodles were cooked wonderfully being just the right firmness and with plenty of seasoning. The house lo mein came with shrimp, pork, chicken, and calamari and there was a ton of food for the price (which surprised me again given how light the appetizers were). While none of the meat was individually the best I've ever had, it came together into what has definitely been my favorite lo mein I've ever had. All in all I really like the main course at Yummy House but would probably not bother with the appetizers, its not that they were bad, just very small and overpriced. read more
