As a fan of authentic Hong Kong style Chinese food, I was excited to try this place with my friends as it they had been told by their Chinese friends that it was good. I really liked the Hong Kong Deli, but have lately been turned off by their service and have noticed a recent slide in their quality of food (more greasy now), and was hoping to find a good replacement for my dim sum fix. Unfortunately, I didn't find it. Their scallion dumplings were nice on the outside, but the scallions were flavorless and kinda mushy on the inside. The beef in the lotus leaf sticky rice tasted strange- wasn't quite sure it was beef at first. The turnip cake had the consistency and flavor of reconstituted mashed potatoes, and their sweet buns were stale. I really suspect that those sweet buns, if not most of the dim sum, came from the frozen foods isle of a chinese market. I know what fresh, homemade dim sum tastes like and that is not it. The potstickers were fairly decent, not so impressed with the egg rolls. Why were they so mushy on the inside? Flour? The sauce they used for the cold Japanese-style octupus was ok, although the octupus was very tough. The duck was by far the most disappointing experience. There was no fat! NO FAT. Duck is supposed to have a generous and super delicious amount of fat floating between the skin and the meat, and it was just missing. The skin was limp, not crispy and the meat was dry. The sauce was way too salty... could not handle it. None of our party of 3 could eat that duck, and we ordered a whole one. What a waste! After that, I didn't even want to try the chicken and noodle dishes my friend ordered. The noodles reminded my of fast-food Chinese/American places. The chicken looked weird, glistening and strangely shaped. . I believe that other reviewer on here that says that he thinks they soak the meat in baking soda to fluff it up and tenderize it. Yummy house is the best I have had on the east coast and near equal to the best of the west coast. 5 stars for east coast. Worldwide rank 4 starrish. Last night a fellow Yelper and I went to get dinner at a place that neither of us had been to before and I was pretty excited to try Yummy house out since this place get's great review. I am going to say this first, I am a Chinese food snob, because I have been to China a few times, and have looked at and ate at some of the best Chinese and Chinese fusion restaurants in the United States. So I was going with a little bit lower expectations, but was pretty disappointed in this place for a few reasons which I will go into. Lets start with the pro's! 1. Pro number 1 was the service, it was fantastic, the waiter and waitresses took great care of us and made sure we had lots of refills, and any question we had was answered really quick. They did not rush us and allowed us to enjoy ourselves while eating. 2. The portion size is really big. You for sure get a large portion for your money here at this place. We ordered 3 entrees, between two people and we both took home large to go boxes for lunch the next day. 3. Price! The price here is great. You can go in and get a great lunch or dinner for the price!. Let's talk about the Con's 1. The biggest one is that they do not give you complementary rice with your meals. You do have to pay $1 for rice here, which this is the only Chinese place I have ever been to that charges for rice. This is something that is usually just included since the cost of rice is so cheap. They should not be charging for rice. 2. The Taste, I did not taste a ton of Chinese flavors in the food. We ordered three entrees like I said before. We ordered the Chicken Lo Mein, Beef and Broccoli and the Kung Pao Chicken. The Lo Mein was the best item we ordered and had some good tastes, but you can't really mess up a dish like this. The Beef and Broccoli was not very flavorful, it could have used some more salt, and could of just used more sauce and flavor. The Kung Pao Chicken was the biggest let down. I love KPC and this had no spice, no heat, no real flavor, and the veggies were soggy. I was so looking forward to this and was very let down. We did have the fried dumplings which were very good, but tasted like ones you get at Trader Joes and not homemade. I want to go back for Dim Sum because that looked good, but the flavor of the food, the charge for rice, and just a few small things is why this is just another mediocre place to get Chinese food. Really glad that when they changed locations they kept all of the quality (and quantity) I had always associated with the establishment. I love that they have a huge range of tasty treats, from widely available to more unique and authentic options. All of the black pepper appetizers are amazing, despite such a simple seeming concept. Went on a Saturday afternoon, hoping to go later than the dim sum rush, but it was still packed. Was very impressed with the decor, white table cloths, modern setting and all. After living in SF, I usually can judge good Cantonese food. We went with 2 claypot items: Spicy seafood and another spicy one (forget the name). Both were very good! Of course these are not the cheapest items on the menu, but I would always steer someone away from ordering the cheapest. Go for the flavor. It wasn't very spicy, as can be predicted because it's Cantonese but just enough to give it more flavor. The seafood was all fresh and cooked perfectly. Yes, rice is a $1 extra, but that's pretty much the norm everywhere now. At least it was ONLY $1. I have seen $1.50 and $2 at other places! Would like to see tea served with a meal as customary in Chinese restaurants. (Talking real Chinese here. I have been to China) The one major drawback was the bathroom. It was nasty. And not just because it was a busy day; you can tell they take little care for it on a daily basis and put no effort into keeping it a clean environment. Sad, especially compared to the nice decor in the dining room. I don't take off points until I go back. If still the same, I will update. We came to Yummy House for lunch and was really happy with the food. They had lunch specials ranging from 6.99-8.99 I believe, and it comes with a drink, soda or tea. Portions were huge, we got the combo fried rice and I have to say, probably the best fried rice I've had in a while, and that says a lot since I live in LA and have Asian food everywhere. The dim sum was ok, the pork ribs could be better as well as the pork baos, but got the chicken feet and they were really good. Service was fast and staff was friendly. I have to say that they were really very different, so I would go to both for different reasons. Yummy house pros: Larger portions, familiar menu items. The sesame chicken seemed like a popular dish (hard to go wrong though with fried chicken). Everyone also had a plate of fried rice. Yummy house cons: Tea is expensive. This place is my number one Chinese restaurant in Gainesville, hands down. Yummy House has it all: from affordable lunch specials to delicious dim sum and HUGE dinner portions. The staff is super efficient, and I usually have no problems waiting for a table. I usually go for dinner with one of my roommates, and the portions are so huge that we end up splitting an entree and appetizer. Our go-to combo is the pan-fried potstickers (my favorite dumplings EVER, and I am a dumpling connoisseur) and the spicy yummy chicken. We even end up having leftovers, but then again we are small people. Yummy House makes their entree portions with the purpose of sharing, so if you go with a group of people I highly recommend ordering a bunch of entrees and then just splitting them! White rice doesn't come with it though, but it's only $1.00. The dim sum has a large variety of options as well. They have carts that come around and you just pick what you want from the carts. I love the egg tarts and the pork buns! You can't go wrong with Yummy House, AND the location is right next to Kung Fu Tea and Sweet Buns! First of all the staff is incredibly helpful and friendly. That starts your meal off well. Second, the food comes out quickly. That's a plus. Third, the food is really good. It is more traditional Chinese food so don't expect the same thing you get at the fast food style Chinese places. We tried the house fried rice, chicken and broccoli, and sesame chicken. The rice and chicken with broccoli would get 5 stars and probably a 4 stars on the sesame chicken just because it was a little too sweet for my taste. We also tried the eggrolls. Fabulous! My husband and I have been waiting for the reopening of yummy house after their move, and boy are we happy they did re open! There was a take our line when I got there and people behind me ordering and picking up orders. I visited on a Tuesday and the place was half full. Mind you it is small but still the business was incredible. I came here from a recommendation from a co-worker and I am glad I did. I like bean sprouts in my shrimp and rice and most places have excuses why they don't or just will not do that. This place was Okay no problem. Since the south garden stop offering dim sum, the newly opened yummy house becomes the only place in Gainesville, FL. Their dim sum are tasty & fresh-made, and authentic Cantonese style. The best one is the chicken feet. The thing I am not happy is the dim sum are often cold or lukewarm when they are served from the cart. They did not keep the dishes warm when on cart. Been to Yummy House quite a number of times but I am always sadden by the quality of their food each time. They were great when they first opened: their food was delicious and authentic, their staff was also very friendly. I was sure I would become a regular patron even if I did have to arrive 20 minutes before they open for dim sum or fight the five other cars to get a parking spot in the lot. Their dim sum is good depending on the day. Each time I've had their dim sum the quality changes. Some days they'll be fresh and delicious while other days you can tell they were leftover from the previous day. I wish I didn't have to play a 50/50 game each time my friends decide to get dim sum. Recently we decided to get take out instead of trying to find parking. The food was not good. The texture of the meats were so weird! As if they soaked it in corn starch and tenderizer. I've eaten here a couple of times but my brother usually gets food to go. Their food has always been very good. Their signature salt and pepper dishes are amazing. I got the salt and pepper seafood (calamari, shrimp and scallops). It was such a great choice. It does have a lot of breading for my taste but it's very tasty. They put this delicious garlic/jalapeno/green onion mixture on this dish that is out of this world. If I could, I would put that topping on all of my food. The crab soup with bamboo is very flavorful. I like to put a little hot sauce in it but it's good as it is. It's made with real crab not imitation and it has shrimp in it too. They had dim sum on Sundays for lunch so we got the duck since it was fairly cheap. It wasn't really my thing but it wasn't too bad. We also got the Japanese baby octopus which was pretty good with a little hot sauce. I was going to get a noodle dish to go but I was too full. My brother got a noodle dish that had calamari, scallops and shrimp and had a light curry flavor with a kick to it last time. You would not expect a place like Yummy House to pack such flavor in such a small space. After all, it occupies the foot print of the old KFC restaurant on Newberry rd. Parking is competitive we frequently have to park across the street, and walk. With less than 20 tables it can be a fight to get seated too. Don't worry, its worth the trouble. Yummy House has the best dim sum in town. What's dim sum you ask? Think tapas sized portions that you don't pay an arm and a leg for. Now imagine a buffet with over 20 items on it. Then imagine those dishes are on carts and they wheel them to your table for you to choose! A great way of ordering if I say so myself. We chose a few dishes that are listed below. Normally I don't like tripe, but Yummy House does it right. Lots of ginger shredded carrots, and tripe prepared and cooked just until it is tender. The bean curd skin with pork was savory, and nicely salted. The bean skin gave a nice snap, and underneath was the ground pork. Very tastey, reminded me of little sausages. Xo noodles are simple but genius. Tightly wound noodels, stir fried with a little xo sauce, red pepper flakes, and scallions. Little bits if pork belly sprinkled around them. After the noodle was gone, a glowing pepper heat remained. Gai lan is just a version of Chinese broccoli. They have longer thinner stems, and instead of a flourette on top they have long leafy greens. They were cooked until tender, and then drizzled with oyster sauce. A savory slightly salty brown sauce. If you have never had congee I recommend you do so quickly. The one we were served had all the soul warming goodness of chicken noodle soup, only in rice porridge form. Add a copius amount of ginger, and mushrooms and you have a dish that should cure what ales you. A dash of hot oil will open your sinuses right up. This just scratches the surface of Yummy Houses offerings. On top of dim sum they have a whole menu with authentic dishes to try. Yummy House does not suck. read more

Driving by, this place looks run down but as we drove in it was packed with just one table for my date and I. Service was excellent and it's a great place for a date. Grab a dish of protein and a plate of rice or noodles and the rest is history. Yummy house is a great environment with lots of great options! It's a great family style Chinese restaurant with great servers and is extremely authentic. We went for a birthday dinner and ate family style with 7 people. We got a chicken dish and some fried rice as well as a bitter melon dish, which is exactly what you would think. The bitter melon had a very distinct flavor and I would not recommend it unless you have had it before and know you like it. The other dishes tasted amazing.
